I don’t know why I’m writing, I don’t know why I’m writing to you, I’m just sitting here trying to stay calm but all these thoughts are in my head repeating over and over and I need to put them down and send them somewhere. You said you would always be there if I needed to talk so hi, yes, hello, I need to talk. I can’t go to Jem and Tessa, they’re just as traumatized as I am, maybe more. And Emma and Julian were there and they were having such a good time, enjoying their house that was finally safe and pleasant and comfortable and then suddenly a baby is kidnapped right out of that safe and pleasant house without anybody noticing anything.

The truth is—I haven’t wanted to admit it, but the truth is Mina’s always been in danger. Because of me. Because I have some long-past faerie ancestors, so everyone close to me is in danger. Nothing I can do about it, nothing I did to deserve it. And it means Jem and Tessa, because they adopted me, because they love me, got their daughter kidnapped for their troubles.  

By the way, since you are someone I care about, you’re a member of the group of people I’ve put in danger. Sorry about that. But you’re Jace Herondale! You eat danger for breakfast. You eat danger flakes topped with perilberries. You’ll be fine. But Mina…she’s so little. And she’s never been away from her family before.

I keep telling myself they won’t hurt her. It’s not her they want. It’s something else.

Every indication is that she was grabbed by faeries. Most of Round Tom’s workers have left and we don’t know if one of them maybe did it, or helped whoever did it. Round Tom himself says he doesn’t know anything and is as confused as everyone else—never concerns himself with politics. Everyone is suspicious of him anyway, but, well, he can’t lie, and the sentence, “I had no knowledge of anything to do with your daughter’s kidnapping,” is hard to interpret any other way.

But it may not matter. If Mina was kidnapped by faeries…especially faeries under direct orders by one of the Courts…that’s a violation of the Accords. And that means war with Faerie. Another war with Faerie.

How do you live like this, man? How do you get through the day knowing that you endanger everyone, just by existing?

I guess I can answer that myself. You are who you are because of everything you’ve been through. You handle stuff because you’ve had to handle stuff. Jem and Tessa adopted me thinking they could keep me safe, but maybe nothing can keep me safe. I’ve been drifting along, playing happy families, but the truth is I have to change. Be harder. Stronger. More powerful. Be someone the bad guys should be afraid of. Not a kid who has to be protected. That has to end.

I’m not a kid anymore.

Anyway. I just realized that you know the whole situation already, because I’m sure Alec has filled you in. But it helps to write it down myself, like I said. I don’t think there’s anything you can do, and I’m not asking for help. I just thought of all people, you’d get it. That you could be someone for me to talk to about this. Hope it’s okay for you to be that for me.

@pamaramburu welcome to the shadowhunter chronicles!! sorry about replying in a new post, there's just a lot to cover 😅

City of Bones is a great place to start! sometimes people will recommend starting elsewhere, because it's not the best book but imo since it's the first book to be published its the easiest introduction. the world building is introduced gradually throughout the book, it's fun to read, not too long etc. so I would start there!

as for the reading order I would recommend a modified publication order. you could definitely do the publication order as is (just follow the publication dates and be mindful that some books came out the same year) but I personally would make some small tweaks to make it more straightforward :)

start with the first three books of The Mortal Instruments; City of Bones (2007), City of Ashes (2008), and City of Glass (2009)

then, read The Infernal Devices trilogy; Clockwork Angel (2010), Clockwork Prince (2011) and Clockwork Princess (2013)

finish the rest of The Mortal Instruments; City of Fallen Angels (2011), City of Lost Souls (2012) (optional: The Bane Chronicles (2013/14), a short story collection about Magnus Bane. it's not important for plot or anything but it does have spoilers for Clockwork Princess & City of Lost Souls so you can read at any point after them) and City of Heavenly Fire (2014)

then it's Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy (2015/16) this is also a short story collection and it's technically optional but I definitely recommend reading it now, as it follows an unresolved storyline from City of Heavenly Fire

next is The Dark Artifices, which is Lady Midnight (2016), Lord of Shadows (2017) and Queen of Air and Darkness (2018) (aka the longest tsc book, good luck!)

then there's the third and final (for now) short story collection Ghosts of the Shadow Market (2018/19)

the Eldest Curses trilogy is kinda hard to place since the books take place years apart & are more of a standalone so you can kinda just read them whenever. The Red Scrolls of Magic (2019) takes place in 2007 at the same time as City of Fallen Angels & The Lost Book of the White (2020) takes place in 2010 after Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy and before Lady Midnight (the third book is not yet released)

which brings us to the most recent series, The Last Hours; Chain of Gold (2020), Chain of Iron (2021) and Chain of Thorns (2023)

the last thing is Secrets of Blackthorn Hall (2022) which is a multimedia epistolary novel that was published here on tumblr (@secretsofblackthornhall) and is currently in the works to become a physically published book at some point soon. it came out before Chain of Thorns and there's a few references to it in the book, but they're pretty minor. you can read it before or after it's really up to you.

and that's pretty much everything! tsc is one of my favourite series ever and I hope you enjoy just as much! have fun <3

No sé por qué estoy escribiendo, no sé por qué te escribo, solo estoy sentado aquí tratando de mantener la calma, pero todos estos pensamientos están en mi cabeza repitiéndose una y otra vez y necesito dejarlos y enviarlos a algún lugar. Dijiste que siempre estarías allí si necesitaba hablar, así que hola, sí, hola, necesito hablar. No puedo ir a Jem y Tessa, están tan traumatizados como yo, tal vez más. Y Emma y Julian estaban allí y lo estaban pasando tan bien, disfrutando de su casa que finalmente era segura y agradable y cómoda y de repente un bebé es secuestrado justo fuera de esa casa segura y agradable sin que nadie se dé cuenta de nada.

La verdad es que no he querido admitirlo, pero la verdad es que Mina siempre ha estado en peligro. Por mí. Debido a que tengo algunos antepasados de hadas del pasado, todos los que están cerca de mí están en peligro. No puedo hacer puedo hacer nada al respecto, no hice nada para merecerlo. Y significa que tampoco Jem y Tessa, porque me adoptaron, porque me aman, secuestraron a su hija por mis problemas.

Por cierto, como eres alguien que me importa, eres miembro del grupo de personas que he puesto en peligro. Lo siento. ¡Pero tú eres Jace Herondale! Comes peligro para el desayuno. Comes copos de peligro cubiertos con perilberries. Estarás bien. Pero Mina... ella es tan pequeña. Y nunca antes había estado lejos de su familia.

Sigo diciéndome a mí mismo que no la lastimarán. No es ella lo que quieren. Es otra cosa.

Todo indica que fue tomada por hadas. La mayoría de los trabajadores de Round Tom se han ido y no sabemos si uno de ellos tal vez lo hizo, o ayudó a quien lo hizo. El propio Round Tom dice que no sabe nada y está tan confundido como todos los demás, nunca se preocupa por la política. Todos sospechan de él de todos modos, pero, bueno, no puede mentir, y la frase, "No tenía conocimiento de nada que ver con el secuestro de tu hija", es difícil de interpretar de otra manera.

Pero puede que no importe. Si Mina fue secuestrada por hadas... especialmente hadas bajo órdenes directas de uno de los Tribunales... eso es una violación de los Acuerdos. Y eso significa guerra con Faerie. Otra guerra con Faerie.

¿Cómo vives así, hombre? ¿Cómo pasas el día sabiendo que pones en peligro a todos, solo por existir?

Supongo que puedo responder eso yo mismo. Eres quién eres por todo lo que has pasado. Manejas cosas porque has tenido que manejar cosas. Jem y Tessa me adoptaron pensando que podían mantenerme a salvo, pero tal vez nada puede mantenerme a salvo. He estado a la deriva, jugando a la familia felice, pero la verdad es que tengo que cambiar. Ser más duro. Fuerte. Más poderoso. Ser alguien a quien los malos deberían temer. No un niño que tiene que ser protegido. Eso tiene que terminar.

De todos modos. Acabo de darme cuenta de que ya conoces toda la situación, porque estoy seguro de que Alec te ha llenado. Pero ayuda escribirlo yo mismo, como dije. Hopefully Kit will grow out of his chronically self centered victim complex but the more content we get and the older he is in it the more prominent it gets. It might be catering to the youngest side of the readers who crave a martyr of the likes of self insert fanfiction, instead of a well rounded character, but it does not work. His life has been easy compared to many of the characters he is resentful of for not catering to his every need, and of course the fandom eats it up since they love a Mary Sue. The blackthorns did everything they could to accommodate him and everything we see of him is bitter and resentful towards them or so delusional as to believe they wouldn't understand his struggles. Or telling a Blackthorn (whose biggest offense was to take Kit at HIS WORD, and to be too preoccupied with the loss of his twin to tell him he loved him) to get out of the Blackthorn estate. It is understandable that a teenager would be upset at that, it isn't understandable that the adults around him pretend it is a rational response, and that the others involved feel guilty about to such an extent. (What did he even mean Ty shouldn't have been there? What is Ty and every other Blackthorn and Herondale and Fray supposed to be so apologetic about? Their lives crumbling at the same time Kit realized he was a shadowhunter and not holding his hand enough through it? That happends to 1 out of 5 shadowhunters.) I understand people really wanted Jem and Tessa to have a connection with the last Herondale, but this way of pushing the narrative is so tired. He wasn't rescued from a traumatizing environment. How is he more understanding of Jace and everyone else but the people who took care of him before he was a Herondale. Why does he talk like they did him dirty. I hope he matures and we aren't stuck with another TMI Jace. The Herondale boy martyr is a trope that should have died with Will. @secretsofblackthornhall
