HERMES CRIOPHORUS

Criophorus or Kriophoros is an epithet of Hermes meaning ram-bearer. [1] It most likely comes from the myth of the golden fleece-- the pelt of a magical ram.

This epithet has become my new namesake, so I’d like to tell you a little about it! I won’t tell the whole myth, because that’s all over the place, but I wanted to explain what the epithet means as well as why it’s the one I chose.

In the myth, a lady named Nephele fears for the lives of her children because her former husband’s new wife has gone to great lengths to put them in danger-- telling her husband that one must be sacrificed and convincing others that they are responsible for the ill-fortune of many. Nephele prayed to Hermes asking for help, and he sent her a golden ram with wings. This ram carried Nephele’s children away from harm, or at least attempted to. One fell off and died, the other survived. The surviving child slew the goat as an offering to Zeus [2] and hung it in a grove sacred to Ares where it was protected by a serpent. [3]

Thus, Hermes gets this surname. He bore a ram to save a woman’s children from an abusive father.

I chose this epithet for my new URL for a few reasons:

I’ve reached a turning point in my religious practice, and part of that is finally getting more serious about worshipping Hermes. As he’s becoming a big part of my practice, it feels appropriate to use one of his names.

This epithet represents him as a protector, which is important to me. He offers a way out for the abused.

I’m Capricorn-dominant (Sun, Moon, & Mercury!), so I thought it was a neat sort of pun and nod to the witchcraft-related side of my blog.

tl;dr   The epithet Criophorus comes from Hermes giving a golden ram to a woman to help her children flee from their abusive father. I chose this because of my new religious focus on Hermes, its symbolism, and because it’s a nod to my Capricorn-dominant chart.
