I'm probably going to play my first game of DND this week! Any suggestions or tips? What do I need to know?

No, seriously, that's a tip. Remembering that this is a game and ultimately you are here to have fun is a great mindset to go into a game with. It's really easy to get anxious about not being a good actor/roleplayer, but honestly, it doesn't matter, just have fun with it! In one of my earliest TTRPG experiences as a player, one of the other players asked me something in character and I just froze up for like ten minutes because I was anxious about answering. Don't be worried about stuff like that; if your fellow players/DM aren't terrible, they'll get it. We've all been there.

If you've not yet made a character or not characterised them yet, a good idea for a first character is making someone who's an exaggerated version of yourself, so that you're not having to worry about if this action is in-character for your character. Adapt your character to fit your needs! One of my players isn't so good at talking in character, so they made it a trait that their character just doesn't talk all that often.

Don't be afraid to think outside the box a bit - as a DM, I love it when my players come up with creative solutions! That said, if you genuinely stump your DM and they need some time to recalibrate, give them that bit of time. I know I've been in that situation before, recently I've needed to be like 'gimme 10 minutes this area doesn't have a map yet but I can cobble one together' in the middle of session.

Also, don't be afraid to ask for clarification when you need it for rolls/rules. Even in the simplest-to-understand games, it's a lot to keep in your head, and part of your DM's job is to help you with that stuff, either from their knowledge or looking it up. We've been playing for years and my players still need to ask what they're rolling all the time.

That's all I can come up with at the minute - if anyone else has any tips, leave them in the notes!

i just want everyone to know that i COULD have written chapter 20 such that instead of ending like this:

"What prize do I get for winning?"

"Bragging rights," Evan says.

"That's not much of a prize."

He winks. "Well, it wasn't much of a competition."

i COULD have had evan respond to 'that's not much of a prize' with this:

"What do you want, then, a kiss? Because I could be persuaded."

but i didn't write that because i don't want regulus's brain short-circuiting this early in the story

writing from regulus's point of view is so funny because evan is PINING for him and regulus is just. completely oblivious.

evan asking barty: complete disaster. barty is like 'ok yeah i can help' and then asks what evan's already tried and once evan finishes listing it all out barty's only contribution is 'well huh one of those things probably should have worked. i guess you could try doing it again and see if he picks up on it this time?' and when evan asks for more comprehensive guidance, barty responds with the human version of the shrug emoji and goes 'this is NOT my area. why don't you try horrible sportsball-themed pickup lines'

evan asking sirius: CATASTROPHIC. first he has to track sirius down. then he has to say the words 'i have no idea how to get regulus to understand that i like him' and sirius chooses to respond to this with 'yeah he's a dumbass good luck dude--WAIT WHAT' and then sirius ends up crying tears of joy because evan *asked him about regulus* which means *evan thinks sirius and regulus are still important to each other* and then they reconcile so this isn't actually catastrophic at all - nonetheless evan's still feeling a little bitter over it since in all the hullabaloo about the BROTHERS he never got his questions answered

so then evan goes to mourn his life choices by flying around until he's too tired to even CONSIDER attempting to speak to regulus, and then runs into megan, who rather unexpectedly goes 'have you tried asking regulus what he considers proof that someone likes someone else in a romantic way? then just do that immediately?' (megan thinks this is HILARIOUS)
