Saw your tags on that post about swamp milkweed about having trouble getting it started--you may already know this, but milkweed seeds need light to germinate! They only need a light dusting of soil on top of them (and putting them somewhere with a lot of light helps!); if you can't see the seed through the soil, it's buried a little too deep. They basically want to be laying flat on the surface of the soil rather than poked down into it, with just enough soil on top to help them retain moisture. Yes this does make it kind of annoying to manage moisture because you don't really want them drying out either (sorry 😭) but I hope this helps!! I mention it because this is the most common issue I see with people trying to grow milkweeds from seed. They also want 4 weeks of cold stratification (cool temperatures like in a fridge while also being in contact with moist soil; you can plant your seeds, pop the whole pot in a ziplock/cover it with cling wrap, and just refrigerate it for a few weeks) so don't forget to do that!

IDK if that'll fix all my problems (the soil at my house is pretty sandy so I think that's the problem when it comes to transplanting at least) but regarding getting those little shits to germinate??? that might be the ticket

(one of the other problems I face sometimes is the seeds deciding to mold when they're in the fridge cold stratifying, i lost a good chunk of seeds to that last year but i don't see any signs of it happening yet this year so fingers crossed everyone)

I have a dove couple that hangs out in the yard quite often. They've gotten pretty good over the years about not flying away immediately while I'm out there working. Tonight they were just chilling on the wall.

They stuck around through most of dinner before heading off to wherever their nest is for the night.

my tomatoes and my squash are starting to come in!!!!!! im going to make a tomato squash version of ratatouille when they’re ripe. plants are amazing!!!

first (big official) batch of tomatoes and peppers are transplanted! we worked on preliminary orders for annual flats for the first week of May today! the florists were discussing mother's day! the spring rush is a clearly approaching dust cloud on the horizon!

Merry Penultimate Day of Liminal Space-mas, how we doing?

so MAYBE I spent 4 hours in IKEA on a whim instead of cleaning my flat BUT! BUT!!!!! I bought several forms of Tiny Shelves which as any fule kno makes everything instantly tidier.

added yet another tier to my stack of tea/coffee/cocoa/misc shelves to control The Collection. got trays under all my draining plant pots so I can actually water them. and I got a new monitor stand which is wide enough to fit both my A3 tablet and my A5 tablet underneath and has a shelf with enough space to trade out my work and home laptops easily. plus it's like 3in less deep than my old one, so that's freed up a bunch more desk space.

also of course vitally we did get the Small BLAHÅJ which was the whole point.

I also found a portable freestanding bag situation (toybox from the nursery section) which is both a) a way better option for storing glass recycling and hauling it down 3 flights of stairs than my previous solution "small cardboard box which holds 8 jars/bottles until one of us can be bothered to transfer them into a bag" and b) HAS A REALLY CUTE WHALE ON IT

plus we (Sam) got some new plant friends and the next size up of a lidded pyrex box I've always found super good for lasagne. and Sam got several things he's needed for a while (as well as a wee shark)

in summary did I spend too much money at IKEA and fritter away a full day walking around aimlessly for fun to the point of exhaustion? yes. was it extremely sensible and adult and I'm actually correct in all regards always? perhaps.
