"'think of the children' always gets support unless what you're thinking about is leaving them with a better world. Somehow, we never need to think of the children when we're talking about climate change, or preventing pandemic diseases, or anything else that costs money. But here we are." - Unbreakable by Mira Grant.

Hey, writers of tumblr. I'm thinking about putting together a self-study course/ebook type thing on how to edit, intended for new/aspiring authors and those looking to prep their work for self-publishing.
For context: I currently do most of my freelance work through an agency that positions itself as an industry leader for author services (make of that what you will) and I get a lot of quote requests from folks who know their work needs editing, but have little idea where to start or what to expect. Frequently, either cost is a barrier to entry for them, or I find I'm having to correct or explain the same issues to a lot of clients.
I'd like to put something out on a pay-what-you-want basis that covers the most common issues I see in manuscripts. I'm thinking topics like basic grammar and formatting (especially for ESL writers and those working with translators), POV and perspective issues, filtering, pacing, rhythm & flow, dialogue, and a primer on techniques for self-editing your work prior to submission, pre-production, or sharing it in general.
Is this something you'd be interested in? What other kinds of topics would you like to see? What format(s) would you prefer?

good morning kitty, silly question, but if i buy a book on amazon for kindle can i still open it up in libby/overdrive? im a bit wary of buying a book and having no way to read it
by default kindle ebooks are DRM'd to only open in the kindle app/on kindle devices - but because it's such a popular format there's also the most resources available on how to crack the drm and convert them to epub, which is the format that works with most other book readers. i've posted about it before but you can look up calibre de-drm to find guides that are probably more useful than my posts.
i'm told there might be some issues with kindle books published in 2023? i haven't seen them yet but if i run into it i'll probably post about it

well, how about this, while I wait for the roofers to come fix the mess they made of my ceiling. just so I can feel like I'm doing something productive.
since my savings are now significantly smaller than they were a week and a half ago, I guess now's a good enough time as any to start talking about some half-decided plans I have for this upcoming story I've been writing, and perhaps other original stories as well if this goes well.
while I'm still going to be posting the bulk of my work on AO3 like I usually do, I think I'm also going to be launching a patreon!
here's the soft plan, though I'm still working out details:
serialize this story at a chapter each week, which will probably take a few months overall.
chapters will be posted to AO3 the same day every week, and a week early on patreon.
extra material will also be on patreon, from author commentary to essays on historical/mythological background that's going into the story to extra fics that will be a few thousand words each. (or... so.)
the main story will fully stand alone. extra scenes will be like... stuff happening from other POVs offscreen, flashbacks, a sappy post-story fic, etc.
after the story is fully done being posted, an ebook version of the story will be made available to patrons with thanks, etc. to everyone who supported the project.
??? repeat?? m/m minotaur story this time, f/f witch who owns a familiar animal shelter story next time. lmao
part of me is still like "no, no one will pay money to support your writing" but like. I've seen worse writers than me make money, I guess, so why not try? it's not like it can hurt, and it can be fun to experiment with new methods of distribution sometimes.
I'll probably post a survey once I've finished the rough draft of the fic so I can plan out the finer details, but that's my basic plan. I want to write the whole fic and edit it before I start posting anything, and at the rate I'm going... I'm aiming for the beginning of May? it's at about 70k rn, and I'm thinking it probably has about 10-20k to go.
so I guess we'll see!!!
in the meantime, if you are a person who is interested in any of this and you have feedback about the project, feel free to lmk! anon or logged in, either is fine. lemme know if there are any patreon perks you'd like to see or if you have ideas about pricing/tiers/etc.
I'm very new to this so I'm open to ideas and opinions!
fingers crossed. lmao

i need to know how did the elves come to learn Black Speech, did they take some Orcs prisoners and learn from them - orcs who barely spoke it properly, if at all ? Were there books? did Sauron have a youtube channel where he talked about his conlang?

I'm kind of really loving these poll stories I've started up and I would love to get a whole story typed out and then lengthen and edit it before turning it into an actual ebook
(with the first couple chapters free to read ofc)

I do my best not to pirate books and request them from the library instead, which includes waittime but shows numerical interest for the book and also financial support for the author.
Anyway I wrote all of this to say fuck publishers who refuse to sell their books to public libraries, you could have prevented me pirating it and it's your own damn fault that i had to resort to my last measures
