Watched sepang 2011 moto2 fp1 followed by qualification and now I am absolutely devastated. screaming crying throwing up etc. etc. (the following write-up aka. me ever so slightly losing my mind over how Marc Marquez's 2011 season ends)
That weekend was so cursed it's unbelievable. Not even two minutes into the fp1 session the camera cut to the turn 10 gravel trap and then there was two riders occupying the place. The first one was Jules Cluzel, who was thankfully already up and was not hurt. Marc was the second one and oh boy, was he NOT fine. He laid there on his back for what felt like minutes, camera focusing on him almost THE WHOLE TIME. I. am. sick. to my stomach!!!
Tumblr media
Not a moment later another bike (or two actually, but one of them was off camera) came crashing in, Marc was still on the ground, just out of the hit range. It was Yonny Hernandez (who looks to be fine. he raced the next day but was black-flagged) and Bradley Smith, who ended up with a broken collarbone + bruised ribs and was forced to be out of the race altogether. His injuries were caused by him getting thrown directly into Marc's bike. How unlucky was that??? The cause of all these crashes? A WET. FUCKING. PATCH. I reeallly meant it when I say that weekend was fucking cursed (and on sunday. we all know what happened on sunday...)
I was already regretting my choice to watch it at this point but just like watching a trainwreck, I couldn't stop.
Tumblr media
And then I saw the team's reaction (full on regret. hits like a brick)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The icing on the cake? the whole session did not have any commentary. Just pure ambient noises, bike engines, staff radios, people rushing around the track. The whole scene was so eerie, I could not imagine watching this live.
The way they were running out from the pit, almost entirely abandoning it to (presumably) check on Marc at the medical center? gut punched.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The famous shot of Marc after medical check-up. Already a pro at slutty suffering at the tender age of eighteen. (I was about to throw up, so thank you I guess? how he was just out there, looking beautiful in this state was beyond my comprehension)
Tumblr media
Marc missed all the sessions following fp1 (3 in total) but he did joined in for qualification session the next day. There was commentating for this and they mentioned that he was still a little dizzy this morning, his neck and left shoulder was not doing great either. Of course Marc being Marc he still wants to at least try to qualify and maybe, race. For context, he was just 3 points off the lead and not participating in this race means he will lose the championship, which in the end, he did.
Tumblr media
It didn't last long. Marc was back in the box after just one qualifying lap.
Tumblr media
Back in the box, Santi and Emilio was immediately all over him. The commentators DID pick up that there was something seriously wrong as normally only Santi (crew chief) would be present to talk about technical stuff that needs to be done and such, and not Emilio (manager). They discussed, things did not look good. With the gift of hindsight we can see that Marc was clearly informing them about his eye problem (which we know was diplopia later on) not to mention his other injuries to neck and left shoulder that was probably bothering him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He has to leave the box shortly after. The commentators said they were hoping that he will be feeling better in the morning of race day, and also that Marc losing the championship was “inconceivable” before the fp1 crash*. There’s no such luck, unfortunately.
*mind you, he already have another big (very reckless and very much his own fault) crash from prior week with Ratthapark Wilairot in phillip island resulting in his blackeye but that was not enough to hindered his performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Marc watching the sunday race from the sidelines, no longer able to participate in this and following race.
Tumblr media
And just to add even more (like anyone needed it, jesus christ) to the cursed factor of this weekend, Axel Pons suffered a massive crash during the race, resulting in a red flag. He also, was not fit for the next race.
God. That's it. That's the end of his 2011 season. From a crash that was in no way, shape or form, his fault. The circuit was later fined for not displaying yellow flag to warn riders of a wet patch on the track.
He could've won. HE COULD HAVE WON. HE COULD HAVE BEEN A MOTO2 WORLD CHAMPION IN HIS ROOKIE YEAR!!!!! I must repeat that at the time he was 3 POINTS AWAY FROM THE LEAD and has more or less been DOMINATING the whole season. He was on the podium for every races that he has finished and was on a streak. I am convinced he could have easily done it if not for the unfortunate accident.
Tumblr media
But all he got out of it was second place in the championship (which we all know he won't accept in his mind. at least back then) and a diplopia problem that would still haunts him more than ten years later...

please never stop making your long ass analysis posts you're THE motogp scholar and i'm learning so much from you as i'm sure others are too
besides deeper analysis on the guys everyone talks about it's also so fun to see nicher races and rivalries discussed that don't get as much spotlight in the general fandom
i appreciate you soo much especially as a newer fan still looking for races to watch and sources to read, thank you for sharing your thoughts like this, seriously!!
thank youuuuuuuuuuu such a nice ask :(( glad the long ass analysis posts are being appreciated. especially the niche stuff generously about five other people care about
here, have a casey/jorge/vale photo I only recently unearthed as thanks:
Tumblr media
the context for the photo is this clip from laguna 2010, where they accidentally played the italian rather than the spanish national anthem. which, y'know. would be a funny moment anyway, but it's just a very valentino thing to happen and a very jorge thing to happen. couldn't have chosen a funnier combination of guys for this particular mix up I reckon. like the commentators say, "poor jorge lorenzo"... it's so symbolically perfect in the context of that whole season and rivalry, so good it feels scripted. anyway, I'd already seen from a distant video taken from the crowd (unfortunately with inconvenient railings in the way) and a very poor quality photo included in this post that casey was also laughing... but I am thrilled to have an ever-so-slightly higher quality photo to confirm this - think it's from around 0:26 in the clip so right when the spanish national anthem kicks in, and casey is still grinning widely. idk it's cute... this is valentino's second race and first podium back from injury and it's also casey's best result of the year thus far (yikes) and jorge's racked up another win - so it's one of those podiums where everyone has genuine reason to be happy to be there. BUT the vibes between valentino and the other two had also taken a turn for the rancid when valentino broke his leg and returned... which showed in that sachsenring to laguna stretch lol. so it's just kinda fun to see them sharing a nice little moment together :) love and friendship wins yay

i mean this with the utmost respect for everyone involved and for sure without the rpf implications but having recently watched hitting the apex and doing a bit of a dive into vale and sic’s relationship, it really is so hard to ignore his role in how vale approaches marc and racing… the danger the risk his feelings on injuries and accidents and marc’s riding style… aversion of him fear for him i don’t know. there is just so much there. of course goes without saying that you don’t have to post this but if you have any thoughts at all i would love to hear them
i DONT super like to get into the sic of it all for quite obvious reasons but i do literally think thats a humongous part of the tension in their relationship forever. outside of rpf even. especially as vale's academy riders came up in a sport where success was increasingly defined by the specific, crazy ass way marc marquez rides a motorcycle. but i alsoooo think vale um. kind of VERBALLY (internally. another story mayhaps) finds that truth (marc being dangerous/reckless) when it is convenient to him. of course losing friends in extreme sports as he got older was a very formative and traumatic experience, but vale almost never had a problem with marc's riding until he had a chance to fight him. actually he never had a big problem with the DANGER of marc's riding until post-divorce....

jaime like "no one has ever beaten marc on the same bike in motogp" but its nice he mentions "in motogp" bc no one has beaten marc on the same bike since he came to the world championship in 2008. ever. he was top ktm in 2008 with 15 years of age missing four out of seventeen race bc of injury. he only rode in 75% of that season and he STILL managed to score the most points out of any KTM on the grid. at FIFTEEN. as a ROOKIE. he finished top ktm in 2009. 2010 won. 2011 obviously would have been his if not for sepang, still best suter by a mile. 2012 won. 2013-2014 won. 2015- well. best honda, ey? 2016-2019 won. and then! and then! 2021? missed 4/18 races. best honda. 2022? missed 8/20 races. BEST HONDA. same is true for 2023. 5/20 races missed, didnt finish a SINGLE sunday race before we hit gp 10/20. FIRST NINE GPS missed or retired. best. fucking. honda. 2024, fucks the gp23s so bad he scores more than double their points. and now we are here, in 2025, with marc on what some people consider the best ever motogp bike of all time, certainly of the past 15-20 years... and you think he will... do what exactly, if not continue exactly that which he did all his life. be the very best.

Intro:
(i'll just put it at the bottom so i remember to delete it)
I have been hoarding all of these (there are like 1000 more in my draft and queue lol) for a while now in my draft bc even tho they are like 3 note gifs, they are historical artefacts to meeee.
Anyway, I've got a cold, and so to occupy myself, I decided to just make a blog so that everything can be organised and easy (ish, this is tumblr after all) to find!
I know heaps of my fellow ✨motogp tumblrinas ✨have made archives for their favs, and you are all braver than me, bc I would lose all the gifs immediately if I tried to create new archival posts. So I just reblogged everything and am going to hope for the best in terms of copyright lol
But yeah, these aren't just my favs. This is more just a snapshot of the fandom at different periods. I only reblogged the deactivated ones, but, y'all, use the posts as little gateways to blogs from that time period, it is FACINATING.
As always, peer review is welcome! If i completely messed up a tag (very likely, since i used the mass tag editor), you're welcome to let me know. Also if there's a ship tag, fun tag or something you want me to add in the mass tag editor, lemme know! more than happy to add literally anything ✨✨
I only started this today, so it's very much a work in progress! All the things without a link are because the posts that match up with them are in the queue. I also need to add the ones i forgot

vi!!! do you have any other good simoncelli 250cc days race recs? that rain one you rec’d before was soooo good. i used to be too bummed out to watch most of his races, but now that ive finished 2011 im kind of just fascinated by his riding style & also find his evolution through his 500cc seasons very interesting to watch!! id love to see more of his early days if you’ve got any other good ones <3 <3
YAYYYYY! okay so I asked @giuventus for some advice!
so for his 250cc days:
-barcelona 2008 < duel with bautista
-phillip island 2008 < another good duel with bautista
-sepang 2008 < he wins the championship!
-OFC. mugello 2009! (the one i receommented before and one of my fav races ever) < wet race and spectacular last lap duel with pasini!
-brno 2009 < pasini vs sic pt.2 with a different outcome this time
OH and MANDATORY: sbk imola 2009! the race that prob cemented italians' love for sic! aprilia calls him to substitute Nakano for the weekend, his teammate is max biaggi and lets say the race created a lot of chaos and drama (esp after lol) (not spoiling it but go watch it :)))))) )
(im also adding his first victory in 125cc: jerez 2004 < wet race and casey floppin, sorry casey)
but I'd love to hear other people's thoughts or recommendations (like maybe @batsplat and @camilleisback <333333333)

Sepang is actually cursed
2008 - crash had his legs trapped in is bike, ended his season
2011 - crash ended his season and possible rookie championship in moto2, also possible career ending injury
2012 - crash meant he had to wait until Philip island to be champion
2015 - worse divorce to ever happen
2016 - crashed
2017 - I’m actually not sure
2019 - hard crash in practice
Like his only MotoGP wins at that circuit 2014 and 2018 and the rest of the years were horrible
Marc you can’t lose P3 in the championship.
(But Ducati Lenovo 2025 teammate swapping flow races this weekend)
This crash today I don’t know how but it is Vales fault

i think with rosquez we have this situation where Valentino perhaps thought that since Marc was a fan he'd get special privileges wrt winning a championship and Marc perhaps thought that since he was a fan, and also young, that Valentino wouldn't be as psychopathic in his rivalry as he'd been in the past with literally any other rider he'd completed with. like you said in that post, rosquez isn't even a top three in the valentino rossi fucked up rivalry competition tbh. It's just the one he didn't win, which I think is why it still bugs him (Rossi)
WELLLLLLLLLL i think pretty early on (several. several 2013 races come to mind. but particularly laguna seca 2013) it was very very clear that valentino would not get any special treatment from marc. also, marc was not even close to the first rossi fanboy on the grid (although yeah probably the best of them. you could argue casey but i don't know if one would define him as a fan of valentino of the same ilk as marc...)
similarly with marc, i don't think that he thought that valentino like... wouldn't play mind games with him... i just think that in marc's head it was like "well i am better and will beat him" and the oddity of sepang is that marc wasn't actually in the title fight, which is why it was a shock. i think if they'd been in a direct title fight, marc would not really have been surprised and maybe even braced for it to an extent. or maybe not what do i know
do agree that the reason marc still bugs vale is bc he didn't win lol not only bc he never directly beat marc (as in to a championship outright... not inidividual races...) but because he's clearly, clearly displaced a significant amount of his bitterness at never getting a tenth title (which is definitely not only about 2015 - 2006, 2007, 2011, 2012... count 'em) into "this is marquez's fault." someone else has said this before me and way smarter and i can't recall who it is (sorry!) but this is why the sticking point for vale is sepang 2015 (and the ensuing valencia penalty) as opposed to argentina 2018.
then again i am making all of this up based on external observation. who knows what actually goes on in that man's head.

would absolutely love to hear directors commentary for ‘did you run here?’ if you have any thoughts you’re up for sharing ?
alright. did you run here? is my love/hate relationship fic. i like it, i like the premise, i like the results, but i always think that i'm biting way more than i can chew, and every time i think about it i discover that i've run into another plot hole
i wish i could work more on it, but it's that one idea that's entirely dependent on my strikes of inspiration. which does mean that i end up writing it in a frenzy
so more plot holes, more timing wanting to crack my head against a wall, more time before i can think about touching it, more sentences worded very clunkily. it's the fic that i received most comments understanding something from passages entirely different from my intention, and then i go reread it and find that it's mostly because i worded it really confusingly or operating in adhd logic leaps
“Prove it to me,” he repeats. The words come up like bloody petals lodged in his chest. “Prove it to me that you’ve fucking tried to not die at least once.” The mania bleeds out of Marc. He gets serious, suddenly. Stone-faced. Hollow. Valentino has seen footage of it happening dozens, hundreds of time. The folded set of his hands, in front of his body. His wide, doll-like eyes. Sepang, Sepang, it’s always Sepang. “Valentino,” he says, very calmly. He kicked me, “get out.”
i love this sequence so much, though. zero trouble with it. the best part about did you run here? is mixing repeating loops with the repeating past
it's always sepang. it's sepang in 2005 against sete. it's the two crashes in sepang 2011. it's the sword of damocles hanging over sepang 2014. it's sepang 2015
it's sepang 2025, ten years later, the wound still firmly in place as ever
you have all the hits, really. you have valentino wildly irrational, lashing out and working on conspiracies. you have marc first wounded, then empty, then furious and ready to kill over it. accusations in sepang, demands of proof

the safety neuroses are what have me 90% convinced that it wasn’t an intentional kick like his foot had to have slid off the peg cause he wouldn’t. he was hurt and upset and angry but like he wouldn’t have crossed that line post-2011 i refuse to believe it 😭
i think. he kicked him. mainly bc it REALLY looks like he kicked him. but in terms of the emotional nuance happening wrt to injury and vale specificallyyyy in sepang its. idk one of the more emotionally tumultuous situations of his life imo? pressure building up/time to win a championship running out, seeming less and less fast as the races go by and jorge racks up points, marc younger and more blunt and more dangerous and more injured and getting in his way and to vale he knows ALL marc cares about is winning like thats IT. he knows if the choice is vale v winning which one marc is taking. winning v injury he knows which one. and all of this is coming to a head at the same track where not long ago all this horrible, life-altering grief and trauma happened (on the same weekend marc nearly ended HIS career). so ALL of that is boiling just under the skin for him, and vale is an ego-driven sensitive little creature who has not much in the way of outlets for all these insane feelings... like idk vale as someone who doesnt like to feel vulnerable vs this situation where all he IS is vulnerable and hes not even FASTEST so. what can he control, if he cant control that?
so MARC ends up as this convenient little symbol for quite literally all of those neuroses like genuinely every single one. slots in like a key into a lock. and uccio as the most trusted figure in his life registers that/feels similarly and provides this excuse to. shunt off some of the pressure and lob a grenade into the race weekend aimed at marc. regain some of that aforementioned control. but marc isnt really someone who can be controlled, marc actually HATES being controlled, and comes back at vale really hard (and to me really sexy but thats neither here nor there we arent talking about that. sorry.)... so AGAIN remembering all that steam pressurizing under vale's skin and all those sepang memories swirling in the back of his mind and the leadup to the DNF being marc like. going CRAZY hard on the cutbacks and divebombing him into corner after corner (that one right before the kick is CRAZYYY) and just generally creating these explosive, dangerous on-track situations that vale does NOT like + are also getting in the way of his championship effort + make everything feel like it is rapidly spiraling out of his control, i think it makes actual perfect sense that vale finds that he simply cannot do that like will not allow it to continue, but he ALSO cant really make a pass stick on marc. so then his base brain takes over and the simplest, cleanest way to remove himself from experiencing that emotionally intolerable situation is to force marc wide, slow wayyy down, and then just. remove him from the equation.

read your tags on this post  you say #and then theres the part of me that thinks vale knew he wouldnt win and to spare himself that he pretended its marcs fault but … hah
and boy do i have something for you. from the same journalist in another podcast on vale he said.
"Then in 2010, Lorenzo beat Rossi on the same machinery, with the same tires. But that’s also the year Rossi broke his tibia and fibula in a practice crash at the Italian GP at Mugello, so Rossi had yet another excuse for not seeing himself as a loser. The titles he lost up until that point were: 2006 to Hayden—an odd year for Rossi, as he was more focused on F1 tests than bikes; 2007 to Stoner, but that was the year Stoner had Bridgestones, and the Michelins were inferior, so that’s his excuse. In 2010, he broke his leg. Then 2011 and 2012, he was on Ducati, so it doesn’t count because he didn’t have a good bike. In 2013, he returned to Yamaha but was still adapting to the bike. In 2014, Honda was unbeatable with Márquez, who won the first 10 races. So he still had an alibi. Finally, 2015, he claims it was stolen by the Spanish biscotto. That’s how Rossi frames the losses."
food for thoughts indeed ah ah
about this post
lmaoooooooo do NOT get me started cause i'll reach vale levels of delusion but i honestly think it's REALLY funny how it was always something...
even in 2006, they don't mention it here but wasn't that the year of the tyre scandal, where PEOPLE were SAYING that SOMEONE was manipulating vale's tyres for valencia... which is so. because my god, out of all the titles he lost since 2001, 2006 was the most easily winnable. i don't think anyone going into that race didn't think vale would win the title. the race prior, nicky crashed out in estoril (CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY ALL TIME RACE!!! took TEN years until a non-factory bike would win another in motogp), and they went into valencia with vale leading nicky by eight points. vale ends up losing out to nicky by five points and the last win is behind him as well meaning vale needed to finish p8 or higher with nicky finishing p3 to win the title. like he could be losing out to nicky by eight points in the race!!! and still win the title!!! just had to be NORMAL about it!!! but he wasnt. he poled it, because of course, and then he crashed. congratulations. im sure it was the tyres. (personally im kinda convinced that vale never was as mad at nicky bc he knew that he fucked it himself).
and like yeah, every other year is alllllllllways somethinggggg lololol and its FUNNY. because he does live off of excuses. it's always someone else's fault. which is extremely funny in CONTEXT because pecco is the same exact way. even in the sepang sprint, it was "the tyres" and it was "the tyres" all year. the tyres or the set-up or the starting device, the bike or michelin or someone crashing him out. funny.
as regards my tag, well. he failed to take the podium in phillip island, even though he REALLY should have. this left vale eleven points in the lead to jorge with two races to go. two races in which jorge was always very strong. if you look at his numbers, during his motogp years he always podiumed in sepang, and more often than not won in valencia. it was to be expected that he would do amazing in both races. is it really so far out of the reach of ideas that valentino would... build himself a little safety net? a little two birds with one stone moment? use phillip island to plant the biscotto idea and thereby a) try to unsettle both jorge and marc who - evidently - had no plans of yielding and would fight for every race win until the end and b) create for himself an excuse that would rally the nation of italy and really the motorcycle world behind him - him! most beloved of all! - to defend his honour and his abilities and his championship that was stolen! by this vicious spanish duo! stolen from the true king and winner! JUST in case everything went to shit and jorge did manage to score eleven points more than vale across those two grand prix which, i think, vale thought entirely possible with how phillip island went.
and it worked, is the thing. vale did have an excuse for 2015 and continues to have one. it is still a championship that was "stolen" from him to this day, in an act of unfathomable betrayal, by an unconcerned party. not jorge is the culprit, but - THREE birds with one stone! - marc, the most likely rider maybe ever to overtake valentino in numbers and (at that point) maybe even legacy. truly a masterstroke, if you think about it. if you allow for the biscotto to have even a shred of truth to it. if you believe that valentino was... well. ill-used. poor vale. tragic.
the thing that fucks with me the most about it all is genuinely that he decided it was fine to throw away his relationship with marc over this. that to feel better about himself and in the eyes of the world to remain untouchable and, really, betrayed and robbed, he did that. and he didnt care. and he still does not.
but thats the me talking that wants to see him exposed and desecrated so. delulu, as i said. much more complicated than that, im sure. vale did nothing wrong, every championship he didn't win was stolen from him, he is an angel and should be praised as such, marc marquez is the DEVIL who PURPOSEFULLY FELL in sepang. and we know he never falls down.

sebastian has so much affinity with the asian races: his first win with redbull was in china (2009), first win with ferrari was in malaysia (2015), he’s won the most times in singapore (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019), his favourite track is suzuka + he’s the only driver to have recorded a grand slam there (2012) + he won a championship there (2011) + it’s the track he has the most poles on (5), & he holds the track record for sepang (2017, 1:34.080)
