Servamp April Fools' event
Tanaka Strike reposted the event from 2023 that was about voting for characters' abilities/techniques. The first time I didn't look into the the event and I was surprised to see that among the abilities that were listed, there were a few that were revealed later in the manga, for example Kuro's Wiedergänger (Ashes to ashes, dust to dust) that appeared in chapter 133.
In March 2023, chapter 128 was published, so it was 5 chapters later when the name of the ability was introduced in the story.
For the event, some characters have abilities that were marked as “lies” because they didn't appear in the manga however, Kuro’s ability was marked as a lie but that was actually true after all!
So yeah, Tanaka-sensei was playing with us. xD Abilities have two readings and you'll see that some of them either have one reading which is different or they some readings were assigned to other characters.

Mahiru: “Why is truth and falsehoods mixed in? Only the actual abilities should be voted!
Kuro: “Mahiru…In this world, you can’t survive on truth alone...
Kuro offering words of wisdom xD The abilities that were marked as "lies" have conversations or comments from characters which I translated.
Note: I listed the abilities based on the characters' names in alphabetical order.
GEAR
Mister Violence (Antique clock of night trick)
This is a reference to “Gear of Night Trick” on TanakaBox and that’s why I worded the translation like this. The clock referenced here must be Hlidskjalf. I wrote about it here when I posted chapter 96.

Youtarou: It's not an ability, it's just brute strength, isn't it?
Gear: I'm a wolf so I have no choice. It's a world that's tough to live in for someone like me.
Youtarou: Honestly! You always act like a wolf at times like this!
HYDE
Cute aggression (The Taming Of The Shrew).

Hyde: This is the most powerful ultimate technique that charms everyone! Kyui!
J-just joking...I don't have a technique like that... I'm s-sorry...I said I'm sorry...
JEJE
Mary Magdalene (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring)
In chapter 125 when Jeje was given his name by Mikuni, his contract item was the winding key from the music box that Kiriko gave to Mikuni and I read that fans discovered that the song it was playing was "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"

Jeje: This technique isn't... It's a lie...
KURO
Wiedergänger (Ashes to ashes, dust to dust)

Mahiru: Hey! If you're gonna lie, you should make it sound like it's… obviously a joke, or it'll just confuse people.
Kuro: Yeah...I don't really have a cool technique name. I'm just a humble cat...
LILY
Turandot (None shall sleep) Like I mentioned in the beginning, this is one ability that was given a different reading. The actual one is "The king is absent today as well." "None shall sleep " (Nessun dorma) is an aria from the final act of Turandot.

Mahiru: You had a technique like that?
Lily: Fufufu...Well… you could say it exists, or you could say it doesn't. Reality is such an uncertain thing. You should also be careful.
MISONO
Bridge falling down (The king is absent today as well)
So yeah, it's Misono and Lily that had their ability names switched and were also given different readings. The different reading is most likely a reference to the nursery rhyme "London Bridge Is Falling Down". And we don't have Misono, we have Mikado who comments about the ability xD

Mikado: Didn't Misono have a powerful technique like that?! Did you make it sound like it existed, Dodo?! Dodo: I included it as an option. Mikado: Nice work! Just for today, even a lie is permitted. I can’t believe Misono had only one technique, and it was from ten years ago (in real time)…As a parent I must do behind-the-scenes... Dodo: Young master is already in high-school...It's about time you... Mikado: This is a parent's duty! Should I add another one?!
SAKUYA
I will die yesterday by your side (Five-minute hypothesis theory)
Sakuya used this ability in chapter 139, however in the manga it says five "seconds" not minutes. The first reading sounds weird...Like, I haven't found a reference for it. "To die" is in the present tense even though it says "yesterday", so yeah, it's weird. I expected that it would be the name of a novel but I haven't found anything, so if some of you might have an idea about it, let me know!

Sakuya: I used this ability in the fight against Mahiru, didn’t I? It was such an emotional technique where I self-destructed to protect him. Tsubaki: Have you actually been reading Servamp??
TOUMA
The Beast of Gévaudan (The beast that crawls in a windowless room) (note, for the first part it's actually in French, La bête du Gévaudan)

Touma: What’s the deal with finishing moves? Aren’t you too old for this?
Iori: You're the one that has the most of them though....
Tooru: Shh!
TSUBAKI
Mahoroba (Under the moonlit night, rain and carnage)
Mahoroba isn't something that can be translated. It's a term that refers to an idyllic or perfect place, often associated with paradise or a beautiful land. The dictionary defines it as "great and splendid land (of Yamato)"
The other name of the ability is the title of chapter 84, which I initially translated as "On a moonlit night, rain and bloodshed"

Tsubaki: I don't recall mentioning such a technique name, but it seems okay as it is.
Ultimate Super Wars (Super Ultimate Form-Tsubaki-)

Tsubaki had another ability and when I googled アルティメットスーパーウォーズ a novel, I assume, showed up but I couldn't find much about it. Based on the cover of the book, I thought it was adapted based on a videogame but I didn't find a game with that title, so yeah, the name of the ability might not be related to it. Regarding these kanji 津薔鬼, they spell Tsubaki.
Tsubaki: Are there people who actually call me by such uncool name?
Get ready for an awesome technique in the next issue! Or perhaps the one after that.
YUMIKAGE
Valkyrie Brunhilde (Swan Lake)

Yumikage: This is actually my brother's...But I have many cool name ideas for my own abilities.

Hi, I haven’t read Servamp at all in recent years so I got so ask something important. Has Mahiru or Kuro been shirtless at all in the manga?

Anon you cannot imagine how hard I wheezed opening my inbox to this. It’s no trouble at all!
For Kuro, not really? Mahiru, however, has a moment where he’s not just shirtless, but naked, and it’s a VERY emotional and vulnerable moment further highlighted by his lack of clothing. It makes me start tearing up every time I read it because the faces my poor baby is making… His heart’s breaking to pieces but he’s trying so hard to be strong.
I won’t say more than that so I don’t spoil it for you, but it’s in chapter 96, “One Life”
It is about the furthest thing from fanservice you can get imo, and it’s such… A turning point. In the relationship between Mahiru and Kuro. Wonderful chapter, especially with another little scene between Mahiru and Youtarou involving a certain blanket.
Other than that, there’s an SLS I can think off from the top of my head featuring Mahiru in the bath. Come to think of it, Strike likes drawing him bathing a lot, because there’s a third, separate art of him relaxing in the tub that was drawn for his birthday. In a lot of anime and manga, that sort of mundane moment is usually only acknowledged for the sake of fanservice. Refreshing lol

Summary: Kuro and Mahiru discuss Gear’s plan to defeat Tsubaki. (KuroMahi, Chapter 96 spoilers)
As Mahiru sat in the bathtub, he watched the water ripple around him. He sat in the warm water but he couldn’t relax. He finally had a moment to collect himself after the stressful fight but he didn’t know how he could absorb everything that happened in one night. Gear’s words echoed in his mind. The power within the rose could defeat Tsubaki but it might kill him as well.
He had suggested that he sacrificed himself so casually that Mahiru couldn’t respond at the time. Even if he hadn’t been shocked silent, he wouldn’t know what to say. He understood how important it was that they stopped Tsubaki before he could hurt more people. Both Kuro and his uncle had been severely injured by him already. He didn’t want to lose anyone important to him. Had he already lost his uncle in the war with Tsubaki?
Mahiru didn’t know if Yumikage and the others were able to save his uncle after they sent him to London. His hands couldn’t stop shaking as questions swarmed his mind. He tried to stop himself from trembling by tightening his hands into fists. His grip was so tight that his knuckles were white and his nails dug into his skin. Yet, the image of his uncle unconscious body haunted him.
“Thinking simply, there were a lot of sorcerers there to treat his wounds. Uncle Toru will be alright.” He needed to hear the words, even if it was his own voice. He thought it sounded like a lie though. Mahiru didn’t know if the man who raised him like a father would be there when he returned to Japan. His mother had passed away and he was only able to cope with it due to Toru’s support.
The memories of the fight with Tsubaki replayed itself in his mind and he didn’t hear the sound of knocks on the bathroom door. Only Kuro’s voice brought him out of his thoughts. “Mahiru, I bought you a change of clothes. Can I come in or do you want me to leave the clothes hanging on the doorknob?”
“You can come in, Kuro. The door is unlocked.” Mahiru told him. Shortly after his answer, he slipped into the bathroom. Kuro didn’t look at him as he placed the clothes next to the sink. He wanted to ask Mahiru how he was feeling but he worried it would only cause him more stress. He wondered if it was be better to wait until Mahiru brought up the conversation himself.
Kuro stepped back and turned to the door. “Are you hungry? We haven’t been able to eat anything in hours. I’ll ask Youtarou to make something for you.”
“It’s been a long day. I think I’ll take a nap after I finish washing myself. Thanks for asking though.” Kuro turned around to see Mahiru’s forced smile. His brown eyes didn’t have the same brightness and hope that he had fallen in love with. He could see that he was tired and he wished there was something he could do for him. “Kuro, can you help me wash my back? I can’t reach with my broken arm.”
The water splashed around Mahiru as he turned his back to Kuro. While he couldn’t see him, he knew the moment he knelt behind him. Kuro lathered his hands with the soap and then he carefully washed his back. His strong and gentle hands eased the tension in his muscles. “Did you borrow those clothes from Youtarou? I should thank him after I change. I heard a thump after I left the room. You shouldn’t fight with an old friend, Kuro.”
“It wasn’t right for Gear to suggest what he did. I threw away that power and I don’t want anything to do with it, especially if it endangers you. We’ll find another way to defeat Tsubaki.” He reassured him. Mahiru fell silent but Kuro could read his thoughts. Tsubaki had already defeated several of the Servamps and two powerful sorcerers.
Mahiru lifted his uninjured arm and reached back until his fingers brushed against Kuro’s light hair. He stroked his hair a few times before he pulled him closer. Kuro didn’t understand Mahiru’s intention so he followed his hand. He drew him down until his lips almost touched his neck. “Gear separated you from that power a long time ago and a lot has changed since then. There’s no one I trust as much as you, Kuro. Maybe you can control it now and its bloodlust won’t kill me.”
He immediately pulled away and he almost ran out of the bathroom. Mahiru turned around to finally face him and his vulnerable expression stopped Kuro. He couldn’t leave him after he saw his face. Kuro returned to his side and met his brown eyes. “That thing is a monster and it hadn’t drank blood in centuries. It’ll try to eat you the moment it has a chance. I’m not going to let it near you, Mahiru.”
“It’s worth the risk if it means we can stop the war! Tsubaki took the power of four of the Servamps already. He was strong enough to beat you with only Lily, Hyde and Hugh’s Jinn. Imagine how strong he is now that he has Wrath’s.” Mahiru argued. He grabbed Kuro’s jacket and shook him slightly. “My uncle probably gave his life to stop Tsubaki. I don’t want that to be for nothing because I’m a coward!”
Silence fell around them. Mahiru’s vision blurred and he thought that it was due to the steam of the hot water. When Kuro tenderly wiped his thumb against his cheek, he realized that tears were clouding his vison. He didn’t want Kuro to see him so emotional and he looked down at the water. Strong arms wrapped around him and he recognized Kuro’s embrace. He pressed his face against his shoulder. “You’re unlucky to have such a weak Eve, aren’t you, Kuro?”
“You’re too strong and kind for your own good. Can’t you be selfish for once? I know you’re scared and worried, Mahiru. You shouldn’t sacrifice yourself for others though.” Kuro whispered to him and rubbed his back. He didn’t care that his wet body would soak his clothes since his only thought was to comfort Mahiru. After all the times he had saved him, he would do anything to see him smile again. “That power is strong but you’re stronger. I don’t want that power but I need you. I’m lucky to have you for an Eve.”
“I think I’m luckier because you’re my partner.” Mahiru’s words squeezed Kuro’s heart. He felt guilty that his past choices had endangered the person he cared the most for. Kuro would do everything in his power to protect him. He continued to stroke his wet hair and thought it smelled like roses.
Kuro blinked and the water had changed to a bath of black rose petals. The world changed around them as well, appearing darker except for candles around them. He instinctively held Mahiru closer when he saw the demon sloth. The demon casually sat on the rim of the bathtub with a stitched smile. “You can bite him right now, Ash. He’ll let you. Does his blood taste sweet?”
Mahiru didn’t react to the demon’s words so Kuro knew that the demon was merely an illusion. He glared at the illusion. “You’ll never know the taste of his blood, that I promise you.”

Servamp: A Mother’s Face
I’m just going to refer to Mahiru’s mother by my own personal headcanon name of Shirota Haru because continuously writing Mahiru’s mother gets tedious after a while.
Shirota Haru to me is a fascinating character. She’s the mother of our protagonist, but we really don’t know much about her. Not her real canon name, not her inner opinions, and not even her perspective.
She’s an often unseen character who’s had much influence over Mahiru and his decisions. Yet, we rarely if ever see her face. This is important because in the manga Mahiru is usually the POV character, and despite the fact that he should know what his mother’s face looks like in his memories her face is either shadowed or not shown at all. The only time Shirota Haru’s face appears fully is when an external factor beyond Mahiru’s control causes him to feel strong emotions. Mahiru has never shown us, the readers, her full face from his POV without the influence of another person.
Hypothesis:
Mahiru actively blocks out the memories of his mother because he feels survivors guilt among other negative emotions about her death.
With the Ch. 97 raws it seems like there was a child’s hand in front of the car from Mahiru’s memories. Perhaps he accidentally ran into the road and his mother saved him at the cost of her own life? In the anime too we are shown a car accident that seems to be her cause of death.
Ch. 24: Tears

In this chapter we see the face of Mahiru’s mother clearly for the first time ever. Mahiru’s memories of her are brought upon by Licht playing on his piano-lead. Mahiru did not choose to remember his mother voluntarily. Licht’s piano brought up the memories of her. Since Lawless himself is also shown remembering Ophelia in this chapter we can guess that the music is supposed to bring up the memory of your most cherished and beloved person. In this case Haru for Mahiru and Ophelia for Lawless. We can only speculate who Kuro was seeing when the music played, but it's likely The Creator.
Since Lawless had regrets about Ophelia’s death and Kuro had regrets about The Creator’s death we can speculate that Mahiru himself also has regrets over his mother’s death. Ophelia and The Creator’s deaths devastated Lawless and Kuro beyond words. It is not a nice comparison for Mahiru to share this similarity.
Ch. 68: So That We Won’t Become Lonely
In Ch. 68 we see the face of Mahiru’s mother once again. Reaching out to Mahiru to hold his hand as they walk. I once again believe that the reason we see her face is because of an influence external of himself e.g. Tsurugi who interferes and enters Mahiru’s mind in the previous chapter 67. If you look closely you’ll see that the way Tsurugi enters Mahiru’s mind by standing on the ceiling is the same way Mahiru entered Inner!Kuro’s rose mindscape in Ch. 92. In Ch. 67 Inner!Kuro himself tells Mahiru that someone’s thoughts are intercepting his and calls mini-Tsurugi an intruder.
I think it’s important to realize that Tsurugi is the force that prompts Mahiru to remember Haru’s face. Because if you go back to the Ch. 67 chapter you’ll see that Mahiru and Haru had a colored introduction, but the top part of Haru’s face is shadowed.
Continuing further on in Ch. 67 and we come to find out from Inner!Kuro remarks that they are inside Mahiru’s mind. Inner!Kuro pulls up a few memories that seem to be related to the topic of Haru and her death, and Mahiru becomes agitated at seeing them.
Even Inner!Kuro in Mahiru’s own mind couldn’t make Mahiru see her face. The scene above takes place right before mini-Tsurugi shows up.
Ch. 79: Touma Taishi- The Tower
We see Haru’s face come to Mahiru’s mind when Touma is giving him a run down of “The unjust conditions which you cannot choose.” It is only when Touma mentions “Parents” that Mahiru’s face changes as he remembers his mother. If you look closely you’ll see the picture of her is the same as in Ch. 68. Mahiru once again sees her face clearly because of someone else; in this case Touma.
Ch. 86: The Requirements of a Hero
This is currently the last time we see the face of Shirota Haru clearly. Again the reason we see her face is because of external factors beyond Mahiru’s control e.g. Toru being grievously wounded by Tsubaki and Iori bringing up the topics of heroes. Iori tells him, “It’s the fact that they will surely come back smiling… Toru knows that.” Iori is talking about Toru in regards to heroes coming back home and that Toru is Mahiru’s hero, but in the flashback Mahiru is shown to be thinking of his mother coming back home smiling. To Mahiru his mother is his hero.
Also the face Mahiru makes. It’s almost exactly like the one in Ch. 96 when he’s having his breakdown in the shower thinking about Toru.
Conclusion:
The topic of his mother is a sensitive one for Mahiru. Excluding Ch. 68, where Haru appears as some mixture between a memory and a sort of dreamscape being, all the times Mahiru remembers his mother are when he is his current age of 16-years-old. Just look at the faces he makes: Ch. 24 where he is literally crying, Ch. 79 where he has this shocked look on his face, and Ch. 86 where he just outright does not look good.
From what I’ve seen these four times in the manga are the only times that the face of Shirota Haru is shown clearly to the viewer. Other times her face is covered in shadows or only the bottom half of her face is visible to the viewers.
I headcanon her name as Shirota Haru because we’ve never been given one for her, but I’m willing to bet that the chapter where Mahiru lets go of whatever negative feelings, such as survivors guilt, that he has about his mother’s death is the chapter where not only will Mahiru, and by extension us the readers, see her face clearly but allow us the readers learn her real canon name.
The other route for us to learn more about her is from either Touma, Iori, or Toru. Toru is her brother who grew up with her and also seems to know a secret about Mahiru’s birth, Touma is the biological father of her child and since both managed to keep their relationship a secret from Toru he probably knows a side of her that’s different from what Toru knows, and Iori would know her in passing as Toru’s sister and if she worked in C3 in any way. Iori also just seems to give off the vibe that he knows a lot more than he lets on. His conversation with Mikuni in Ch. 72 is highly suspicious to me.

I do think that there is more to her death than a simple car accident, but I’m not quite sure what. I look forward to seeing what the manga reveals about her.
If we don’t get as many chapters dedicated to her as we did to Touma and his backstory I will be sorely disappointed.

I apologize for any grammar mistake. I also apologize that I couldn’t figure out how to properly resize the pictures. I’m still very new to this.

first i was sobbing about newborn!kuro last night & NOW im both sob & fear about an unstable!kuro killing mahiru. i really hope it doesnt have to come to that. CHAPTER 96 WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME?! i don’t want to think about this! kuro has enough to deal with on his mind just trying to handle tsubaki in a not-killing way to have to think about accidentally killing mahiru because he took his full power back. let kuro live already please! i know kuro doesnt want any of this ;___;
ok but enough about me screaming about kuro, even though i havent been yelling about my sloth son in a long time. its really interesting how much gear had to learn about servamps. along with the implications about kuro being the MOST UNSTABLE ( at full power ); in return making tsubaki the MOST STABLE servamp among the siblings.

Servamp Chapter 96 “One Life”
READ ONLINE Please check out these notes after you read this chapter!
We finally reached the point were we get to learn more about these inner beings that reside within the Servamps! As of now “demons” is how they can be considered. -On the second page I actually wrote not what was intended in the furigana reading (which translated as that/those), but rather the reading of the kanji [核]
which can mean core/nucleus as well as ‘center’ (like in the context of “what is your center?”) as in your essence, the word in Japanese can also mean ‘heart and soul’, related to the latter meaning. Seeing as the Servamps have these other personalities, these separate beings inside of them, there are two ‘cores’ (consider them as souls) in one body. -(Gosh I hope they find a way for Kuro to use that power without something happening to Mahiru...) -(Just, poor Mahiru :(( Hopefully he can get in contact with Tooru or any of his friends to find out what goes on) -I’m glad that Mahi made friends right away with Youtarou! They are such soft boys :) -Youtarou has known Gear since he was little, but I would like to see more about their past, like when Gear revealed to him more about werewolves and other supernatural stuff and how come Youtarou has a similar earring like the one Gear has which has part of his power sealed.
-OMG, what a name, “ Hlidskjalf “. This was written in katakana and didn’t sound like something in English when I first read it and I was like “OK, Tanaka, what mythology I gotta look into now?” You can research more about this, but the gist of Hlidskjalf, from Norse mythology, is said to be “ the high-seat of from which Odin watches out over the entire universe.” That was the furigana reading, while in kanji [月詠見盤] we have the following: 月詠 (tsukuyomi) This is an alternative way to write Tsukuyomi, the Japanese moon god. From what I have seen, the name is usually written as [月読] 月 (tsuki/moon) and 読 (yomi/reading), but instead of the latter kanji we have 詠which can be read the same, but is used more in literature, in classical context, it can also mean to compose or recite poems. So, in the first part we have a reference to the moon. The last two kanji [見盤] can mean ‘viewing board’ but essentially, what Gear uses is a moon dial, which only works on fullmoon nights. (hence why Youtarou questioned why Gear why he wanted to use it) (Also, how the heck did Gear move his moon dial from Japan? Is it just one? Does he build them? xD) And another thing...C3 had stuff that referenced Norse mythology. C3 knows about werewolves, so, they knew about Gear? Or at least Iori knew and that’s why he specifically send the Sloth Pair in London because he knew were Gear was? I hope these notes were helpful to get a better understanding of some things!
