The abrupt attack pulled me by surprise, my gasps for air silent as my brain quickly snapped into survival mode. My gun fell to the ground as my fingers dug into their arm, pulling it away just briefly enough for me to tuck my chin down to prevent pressure from being applied on my windpipe. Their grasp was firm as I struggled against them, my fingers fumbling as I tried to retrieve my knife from my thigh. Snapping it out of its holster, I flipped it in my hand so it was facing backwards before I plunged it backwards into their torso.

They keeled over for a second, their grasp loosening on me as I was able to slide my way from their grip and pivot myself in their direction. My swing at their head was blocked as he swiped my arm down, now fully standing upright in front of me before I had a quick moment to duck the fist flying through the air. As I rose I brought my fist upwards towards his chin, throwing his head back and causing him to stagger for a moment. I stepped back, trying to gain distance between the two of us as I attempted 

My attention was diverted for a second too long as he quickly lunged and got a sharp hit to the side of my head sending a ringing through my ears and, unbeknownst to me, knocking my earpiece out and causing it to dangle by the cord at my side. In my fazed state, he was able to knock my knife from my hand as it toppled onto the concrete below us, leaving me weaponless as he closed our distance again. His forearm connected with my throat, pushing me back and pinning me against the wall as I struggled against him.

For the first moment I could see him up close, face shadowed by the night as I once again found myself gasping for air. His victorious smirk was quickly slapped off his face the moment my knee sharply met his groin, pulling him off of me as I ducked and retrieved my gun. I sprinted away as he was distracted, ducking behind a nearby dumpster and waiting a moment before peeking around the corner, aiming my gun.

Our shots rang out in unison as I’m thrown back in shock, pulling my back flush against the dumpster again as an immediate stabbing pain shot through my shoulder. My breathing was shallow and harsh as I grasped at the pain, blood quickly seeping through my shirt and fingers.

I was still unsure if I had been successful in hitting my own target, but the fact that he wasn’t quickly closing in on me currently left me with at least a little hope he wasn’t making it away unscathed. I tried to keep my mind steady as the pain shot through my limb and chest, my shaking becoming uncontrollable as the endorphins flooded my body and my head fell back into the dumpster behind me.

This shit hurts a hell of a lot worse than I expected.

Another shot from behind startled me, but seeing as though it wasn’t in my direction I stayed hidden as I tried to ignore my hearing going fuzzy and my vision morphing into a blur. My alert system was delayed as the shadowed figure of someone frantically appearing in front of me came into view, my hazy vision only making it out to be Minho once he knelt before me, eyes wide in panic.

“Hey hey hey” His hand gently cupped the side of my face, keeping my head steady as his other hand applied pressure to my shoulder. I harshly blinked in an attempt to maintain my consciousness, fighting back as my body fell into shock. Everything sounded fuzzy as my hearing tried to give out, my body weak as I hissed at the contact from him. Minho quickly removed his jacket, pressing it to the wound before radioing into his earpiece. “Seungmin, we’re gonna need you, y/n’s been hit. I’ll bring her to you.” Minho struggled to keep eye contact with me as my eyes lulled around my surroundings, worried that if I kept them stationary that I’d lose my conscious battle.

“You’re gonna be okay, this isn’t a bad one.” His hand supported my head as I struggled to keep it upright, his words staying soft and comforting. “I know it’s scary getting hit for the first time but you’ll be fine, trust me. Just focus on me, okay?”

“This shit…fucking hurts.” I barely croaked out, my voice hoarse as I forced my words. Minho softly chuckled with a strained smile, eyes still focusing on my face, now coated in a cold sweat.

“I know, I know.” He started to hook his arm under my good one, pausing before increasing his grip on me. “I’m going to carry you to the van, alright? The other group has retreated so we’ll be fine. I’m just gonna need you to hold on.” I weakly nodded as he hooked his other arm under my knees and lifted me from the ground, checking our surroundings before hurrying back. I hooked my arm around his shoulders, my grip weak but as firm as I could hold as the image of Chan swinging the sliding door open on one of the vans came into sight, Minho setting me down in a reclined seat and slipping in beside me as Chan shut the door and hopped into the passenger seat.

The ride back to the house felt hazy as my brain felt like it was on another continent, the pain continuing to shoot through my arm as Seungmin attempted to apply pressure to slow the bleeding. I took a deep breath as I eyed the roof of the van, the members around us silent besides the heavy breathing that was finally starting to calm.

“The mother fucker came out of nowhere.” I voiced through the silence, frustration catching up with me, and disappointment that I even let this happen. Minho reached forward and grabbed my free hand, giving it a squeeze of reassurance before I quickly hissed in pain, my jaw clenching as Seungmin tried to administer minimal first aid before we got back to the house, my string of curses swimming through the tense air.

“Don’t worry, you got a good hit on him, saw him clutching his stomach as he tried to run away.” Minho didn’t release my hand for the rest of the ride, allowing me to squeeze it as a distraction from the pain until finally the van pulled into the driveway. The door quickly swung open, Minho pulling himself out first before turning back and lifting me again.

“I can walk.”

“Never said you couldn’t, now stop being difficult and just let me get you inside.” I swallowed my argument because I’d be lying if I said I actually wanted to haul myself up these steps at the moment, instead opting for letting my head rest on Minho’s shoulder as he brought me into the medical room and laid me down on the bed beside Seungmin.

Now the rest of my night was no more pleasurable than the actual act of getting shot, one thing you don’t think about, is the aftercare. Having to ensure all pieces of the bullet are out of the wound, the cleaning, and the bandaging. Thankfully Minho still stayed by my side, still providing his hand as a stress ball through the pain, hissing through his own pain every now and then with my vice grip.

Thankfully, nothing of importance had been hit, just as Minho suspected. With my shoulder properly cleaned and bandaged, and my arm in a sling, I had the ability to let the painkillers finally kick in and lull me into an uncomfortable sleep. Although, as someone who commonly tosses and turns, every moment my body attempted to move rudely awoke me with sharp pains before letting me drift off again.

After my long night of sub par sleep, I finally fully awoke to a dull light shining through the curtains, leaving a soft glow across the room. The faint clicking on a keyboard in the corner of Seungmin at his computer echoed as I blinked the sleep from my eyes, turning to my side to a knocked out Minho in the seat beside me, slumped over and surely leaving him with a kink in his neck. I attempted to pull myself into a sitting position, promptly falling back onto the bed with a hiss of pain.

“Word from the wise, if it hurts, don’t do that.” Seungmin’s eyes stayed glued on his screen as he spoke, and honestly he’s lucky I’m injured because the smart ass remark would have earned him a smack across the back of his head with my current attitude. Minho stirred with a slight jolt awake, immediately trying to roll his head on his shoulders to stretch out his neck.

Kink in the neck. Called it.

“You could have slept in your bed, you knew I was fine.” My head fell back against the pillow, closing my eyes and giving in to my body’s state of exhaustion. Minho let out a soft groan as he stretched his limbs, the night of sleeping in a chair leaving everything stiff.

“Maybe I just wanted to wait and see if you’d be a wuss over getting shot.” He mumbled, before relaxing back into the chair once more.

“You’re very funny. And honestly, if I didn’t know any better-” I leaned in closer to Minho with a soft whisper “I’d think my nurse might try to kill me.”

“Please, if I wanted to, you’d be long dead by now.” Seungmin piped up from his corner, swiveling around in his chair as he stood and checked the IV bag hanging beside the bed. “At least you seem to be in good spirits after, ya know, getting shot.” He helped me sit up before leaning down and whispering in my ear quietly. “And just remember, of anyone here, I have the best methods to kill you. Discreetly.” I tried to huff out a chuckle as my face contorted from the pain, my whole body starting to feel like I’d been hit by a semi.

Seungmin carefully removed the IV from my arm before allowing me to hang my legs over the side of the bed, letting the feeling return to my limbs. I flexed my fingers, happy to still have the ability despite the slight ache it shot up toward my shoulder.

“It’s gonna take some time for the muscles to heal back up, so you’re going to need to take it easy for quite a while.” Seungmin checked different movements in my arm carefully, being gentle enough to not put too much strain towards the shoulder. My jaw clenched as I tried to hiss through the pain with my head dropped.

“You hear that? No more beating the shit out of me in the training room.” I looked up to Minho through my lashes, jaw still tense with my tongue pressed to the inside of my cheek. 

“Just wait until he clears you for training.” Minho stifled a laugh as he crossed his arms, a smirk trying to fight its way onto his face.

“And no more getting shot, alright? It’s really a hassle to take care of you guys.” I rolled my eyes before looking back to Seungmin.

“Ya know, I wasn't really planning on it, but thanks for the top tier advice.” I tried to straighten my back in an attempt for a stretch. “Do I have to stay in bed all day? Or can I least head out to the others?”

“You can go, just take things slow, and let me know if you need more painkillers” Minho helped me to my feet slowly, letting go once I gently brushed him off.

“I’m good, I can handle it.” He eyed me carefully as I started my way towards the door, waving back to Seungmin as I left “Thanks doc.”

Minho’s eyes stayed directed away from me as we walked down the hall, almost as if he was scared to look in my direction, as I just focused on not tripping over my own feet.

“Why did you come find me?” Minho finally looked over to me, looking a bit like a child who had been caught opening presents on Christmas Eve, eyes wide for a moment before his face immediately dropped back to his stoic mask. He quickly glanced away, hesitating in the silence before answering.

“I-There was a weird sound that came over your mic that sounded like a struggle, then you just stopped responding. I heard a gunshot from the east side and I guess…I just kind of panicked.” His gaze stayed pointed forward, not wanting to make eye contact as he admitted his moment of fear. The instant of the hit to the head replayed in my mind, the man had probably triggered the mic as he knocked it out of my ear, cutting off my communication with the group.

“Aww, so you’re saying you were worried about me?” I nudged him as I gave a corny grin, flashing my teeth obnoxiously as I tilted my head in his direction.

“I knew there was potential of a teammate being injured, don’t flatter yourself.” He scoffed as we entered the living room. I was still going to accept it as a small victory, whether he’d admit it or not, I was gaining the upper hand and breaking through to him.

Felix quickly jumped from his spot on the couch and ran over to me, pulling me into a gentle hug from the side opposite of the sling, being careful not to hurt me.

“How are you doing? Are you feeling okay? I’ve been so worried about you.” His words came out faster than I had expected, his questions almost morphing into one cohesive thought as they spewed out of his mouth. I leaned my head on his shoulder in an attempt to reciprocate the hug without my restrained arm.

“I’m just fine Lix, thank you. Minho made sure to take care of me all night.” I gave Minho a slight smirk with a wink, his rolling of the eyes paired with another scoff as he took his place next to Jisung on the couch, taking the popcorn from his lap and acting fully immersed in the movie the group had been watching. Chan carefully eyed me in silence as I sat down next to Felix and let him cover the two of us with a blanket. I could tell Chan was trying to hide his own worries behind a mask, but I was refusing to make a big deal out of the situation. I just had to heal, and I’d be just fine.

It came with the job.

The day had been a calm one, the entire group earning a well deserved day of rest to recoup after being caught in a surprise gunfight. We knew tomorrow we’d have to discuss our findings, but Chan had insisted we took it easy today, especially me. Thankfully no one else in the group ended up with any severe injuries needing to be tended to, but go figure it’s the newcomer who ended up getting shot.

I slowly made my way from Felix’s room, still making sure not to rush myself at all with my steps. Seungmin had taken care of redressing my wound before everyone started turning in for the night, clearing me for bed but I instead had chosen to spend some time with Felix, watching him play a game on his computer for once and finding humor in his flustered state with every loss. Turning down the hall, I passed by Chan’s office, paying no mind to the cracked door until I heard Minho’s voice from inside.

“I shouldn’t have let her get separated in the first place though.” My feet stopped in place, backing up slightly and pressing my back against the wall. I had no intentions to eavesdrop on what was a private conversation, but the moment I realized I was the one being discussed, I knew I needed to hang back.

“You can’t blame yourself for this Minho.” Chan’s voice stayed calm and gentle, his response being the same as mine would have been if I was in the room with them.

“But still, if I had stayed by her side maybe I could have helped.” Minho sounded flustered, a tone I had yet to hear from him. Through the crack I could just barely see Minho pacing around the room, occasionally disappearing from my view behind the door before settling in front of the window and staring out. My brows creased as I tried to listen in, Chan’s voice now dropping quieter.

“Minho.” From my spot hidden behind the door I couldn’t see Chan seated at his desk, trying to change the topic to keep Minho from working himself up any further. “You said you recognized Ten, Baekhyun, and possibly Taemin, right? Do you think this could have been SuperM?”

“I don’t know who else it could’ve been.” Minho dropped into one of the seats before Chan, running his fingers through his hair with an exasperated sigh. “I should’ve spent more time training with her…”

“You can’t keep running in circles around yourself like this, you’ll drive yourself mad. Go get some sleep, we’ll discuss this more in the morning. I’ll have a talk with Felix as well before we bring this up with the group.” Minho delayed standing, instead staying slumped back in his seat. “I said go to bed, Minho.” The moment he started to rise in silence, I quickly bolted from the door, trying to avoid being caught listening in. I slipped around the corner just in time to hear the door of Chan’s office closing behind me. Shuffling down the hall, I saw my door slowly coming into sight before me.

I slipped into my room, closing the door slowly before releasing the knob carefully so as to not make any noise. Right as I sat on the edge of my bed, a knock emitted from my door, causing my stomach to drop into my ass.

I’ve been caught.

“Y-Yeah?” I said hesitantly, my entire body tensing up as I quickly tried to formulate an excuse.

“Could I come in?” Minho’s voice was quiet behind the door, almost nervous as he asked permission. As I welcomed him in, he stayed near the doorway, almost uncertain if it was appropriate to close the distance. “I um, I just wanted to check in on you. Is there anything you need before bed?”

“No, I’m alright, but thank you.” Minho quickly nodded, staring down at the floor. I couldn’t help but slightly smile at his offer, the poor guy really was beating himself up over this. “And thank you, for taking care and staying with me last night.”

“Yeah, yeah. Don’t get used to it. And once you’re healed we’re working on your self defense.” I watched as he quickly shut the door behind him and made his exit, leaving me alone once more. I chuckled quietly as I shook my head, I knew normal Minho was still in there somewhere.
