Wednesday, November 29.
You reap what you sew.
Never have truer words been spoken. But they come as good news for Tumblr's sewing community, however, who have been sewing some absolute delights. Some real œuvres d'art. Some winner-winner chicken dinners.
As luck would have it, #sewing is trending. And it's trending right now, so we have reaped a selection of these very dinners for your eyes only. We have then asked ourselves just what did we do to deserve y'all, and your resplendent talents.

Hobbies: Sewing
My work comes to life when the thread goes on top of the fabric.

Ok I've got a plan for my historically inaccurate (but still probably more effort towards accuracy than i need to put in) renfaire outfit! I'm aiming to make a few pieces that will go well together but don't HAVE to be worn together, so I can start to build a little wardrobe. Also doing my best to use cotton or linen where I can, as well as sew from my stash or thrift the materials.

I'll be doing a simple chemise from a patternless tutorial, using a cotton bedsheet I got from Goodwill. This is one of those "sew some squares together" patterns, and I actually got it mostly finished over the weekend.
For the skirt I'm using a pattern from an indie designer that incorporates a laced adjustable waistband and huge historical pockets, which will be made from a set of floral-patterned cotton bedsheets (also from goodwill). I'll pull down the hemline to my ankles rather than use the knee-length original skirt.
I'm adding a set of 1700s stays (historical accuracy not guaranteed), which will be worn inaccurately as a top layer rather than being an undergarment. I splurged and used a 50% off Joann coupon to buy some cute cotton canvas with bumblebees on it for this one.
And to tie it all together I'll be making a leafkerchief (tutorial from @vincentbriggs)! Ive felt like this outfit needed a head covering, but hats didn't quite feel right, and this definitley did. Renfaires are somehow always on the hottest days of the year, so this will pull double duty as sun protection for my scalp as well as a cute little accessory!
I'm aiming to have this all done within the next few months so I can wear it over the summer!

Any advice for someone who's trying to get into sewing?
yes!
youtube tutorials are your best friend for individual techniques, but less so for entire projects
do NOT get an old sewing machine. secondhand is fine but anything manufactured before 2000 or so is going to be a hassle to find parts for, and often a little harder to figure out as a beginner
going off of that wrt to saving money on a machine iirc costco used to have a sewing machine that went for under $100 and i hear it was a decent machine. otherwise facebook marketplace can be good for secondhand machines (but see above abt antique machines, and avoid anything that doesn't have the user's manual still with it)
as a beginner, start with simple projects, but choose things you do actually want to wear/use bc it gets boring otherwise
for sewing patterns, a lot of bigger pattern companies have specific product lines for beginners, like mccall's learn to sew, very easy vogue and butterick fast & easy, which can be a good intro but the designs can be kind of blah so simpler patterns from the main collections of these brands can also be okay (btw feel free to come to me for more specific recommendations if you have an idea of the kind of thing you'd like to make)
pdf patterns are a little cheaper which is nice but pdf plotting is a pain especially as a beginner so if you're willing to spring for the paper pattern i'd recommend doing so
when buying fabric, stick to the recommendations on the back of the pattern envelope. once you get more comfortable with different fibres you can start choosing for yourself but i know when i first started i made some very poor fabric choices (ie making garments that were supposed to be drapey in very structured fabrics and vice versa)
thread is important! i like gutterman organic cotton thread but in a pinch gutterman polyester thread or coates dual duty will do the trick
stick to cheaper fabrics for your first few projects bc they likely won't turn out perfect
finish your seams!!! you don't need a serger, just use a narrow zigzag stitch on the edges or learn to do french seams

finally went to the thrift store and got some sheets for pirate/poet shirts ! i think I might try adding some bells and whistles this time, maybe some frothy cuff ruffles or a different kind of collar. the only good thing to be gleaned from those two “bernadette’s pirate shirt pattern is Bad actually” videos is the existence of neck gussets, which i wasn’t aware of though it makes sense, so I’ll probably try those out. another thing ive never been completely happy with has been the neckline so i might try shaping it into an actual V instead of just doing a cut down the center. and far be it from me to deprive myself of extremely inconveniently long sleeves but it’s getting warm already and i want to experiment with short poofy sleeves. we’ll see!!

My sewing machine has a lightbulb inside that I absolutely hated because it heated up the machine unnecessarily. So I took it out which actually required a great deal of effort since I had to basically take apart half of the machine. Then last week I sent my sewing machine to repair for something completely unrelated to the lightbulb right. The repair guy installed another lightbulb. I’m in hell

does anybody sew here who has thoughts or resources on hacking premade clothes? I have to get this jumpsuit where you can tie the top different ways for a bridesmaid outfit and I’m wondering if there’s a chance I can butch it up a little. well butch is a strong word but mainly I get dysphoric about stuff that’s form fitting in the chest and was wondering if I could take out the padding/boning (+ make it not a sweetheart neckline) so I could bind. I could make the racerback or one shoulder option work if I could make it a little less boobful
