Thank you for this! Aside from his interactions with Peter, that I do like very much, being from latino américa, well... Let's just say I never liked Tony that much as a character, he represents more of USA than Steve ever did, to me. And I was not that much invested in his arc because of these exact reasons.

I know that this message was intended for the OP but since you wrote the reply on my reblog it appeared in my notifications so allow me to use it as an opportunity to write out something that I have been thinking about but I believe I never wrote on tumblr. It’s something that pinged me, an Italian, of Civil War.

You know that Italy had a civil war during the last three years of World War II, right? It’s not really known as an Italian civil war but it was essentially what it was. Basically the country found itself fighting multiple wars at once - the war against the occupying German Nazi troops, a civil war between fascists and anti-fascists, and also a class conflict but I’ll keep it brief.

Basically, while the American troops (disembarked in Sicily) moved progressively north and fought in the south and center of the peninsula (also why you cannot walk from the American front to Austria in one day, sorry), Mussolini created a fascist republic in the North. Anti-fascists organized in partisan brigades to fight against German and Italian fascist troops, and - with the aid of the American aviation (bombing cities) and the civilian population - they freed the North (sorry, it sounds like a Game of Thrones plot but it is what it is) in the spring of 1945.

Now, it seems like a long time ago, but consider that the country was split in a “black versus red” opposition for many decades afterwards (consider that the Cold War climate exacerbated the political atmosphere, the country’s fascist history was swept under the rug because communists were the biggest issue for the American-backed governments and Italian communists were strong) and in the 70s and 80s we had a bloody season of both black and red terrorism. And that’s basically yesterday in historical terms.

You’d think that now - with no more Cold War, neoliberalism, depoliticization, blah blah - things had changed and World War II history didn’t matter anymore, but it still does. It’s getting loud and clear now that the extreme right is on the rise again. For these people, the anniversary of the liberation of the North from fascism is still controversial. Antifascism is still a controversial thing. Partisans are still sort of villainized.

Sorry for the long premise but we’re arrived at the point. Consider this argument that I have heard people (including someone very close to me) make:

The partisans were the real bad guys, they didn’t care about the people they claimed to defend, they only cared about making bolshevik communism happen in the country for their own interests. They were cowards, they made guerrilla attacks against the German troops knowing that the Germans would retaliate against the civilian population and kill innocents. So the blood of those innocents are on the partisans, because they did it on purpose, they attacked the Germans and they ran to safety hiding on the mountains like the vile cowards they were, knowing that the Germans would assassinate civilians instead.

Now, i hope I don’t have to explain why this is a big pile of bullshit from every angle you look at it. Anyway, you understand why the concept of pinning the responsibility for deaths and destructions - caused by either villains or Tony - on the avengers, with a special focus on characters like Steve (an antifascist icon), Wanda (literally framed in the movie as a special case because she isn’t American but a foreign from Eastern Europe - yikes) etc... pings my mental radars.

In Washington DC and Lagos (iirc) they were literally going against Hydra and Hydra operatives. They went to Sokovia in the first place because there were Hydra operatives there. (NY is just stupid because it was a frigging alien invasion, and it happened in NY because the Tesseract was there, but sure blame it on people who weren’t even part of Shield at the time, like Steve “you should have left it in the ocean” Rogers.)

Basically, let’s pin the consequences of fighting Nazis on the people who have been fighting the Nazis, yes? Because it’s not a fascist argument at all.

After WW2 the Americans basically made sure that Italy was governed by a filoamerican, authoritarian, anticommunist government. For decades the puppet-masters behind Italian politics were the USA and the Vatican (a famously antifascist force /sarcasm). And a certain anticommunist sentiment allowed the cultivation of this idea of the antifascists as on the same level as the Nazis, as though Nazis and partisans just fought an even conflict using the civilian population as the battlefield. (What about the starving teenage girls who put their lives on the line to help free their cities? Do they count as privileged bolshevik masterminds? But okay)

Long story short, I see you, Americans, painting your state-approved official warfare as the Good thing while anti-nazi guerrilla operations by semi-spontaneous antifascist groups are the real responsible for civilian suffering 👀

(Curiously, there is a stark - lol - difference between how Tony is portrayed in the Iron Man movies and how he’s portrayed from AoU onwards, that seems to be a turning point for many things.)

I mean, I realize this is somewhat of a personal experience (but is it) and this is just an action movie (but is it) and I’m definitely not saying that this matters more then the experiences of other people and other countries, but I wanted to write it down.
