What If the Earth Were a Cube? How Would Our World Look if Earth Wasn't Round but a Cube?

We know our Earth as a round sphere, something we’re all familiar with. But what if one day Earth turned into a cube? Imagining a cubic Earth brings us to a world with unprecedented and fascinating characteristics. If Earth had a cubic shape, its landscapes, gravity, oceans, and atmosphere would change drastically. In today’s blog, we’ll dive into the unique features and scientific implications of a cube-shaped Earth.

Imagining a Cubic Earth

On our round Earth, we feel a slight slope in every direction. But on a cubic Earth, standing on any of the faces would feel different. Each face would be completely flat, resembling a vast plain. Starting from the center of a face, one could look around and see a flat landscape stretching out in all directions. However, as soon as one starts walking towards the edges, things would quickly feel unusual.

Unusual Gravity Behavior

On a round Earth, gravity works uniformly in all directions. But on a cubic Earth, each face would have unique gravitational effects. Gravity would be strongest at the center of a face, pulling objects directly toward it. As you move toward the edges, you’d feel like you’re climbing up a slope. Within days of this imagined journey, it would feel like you’re ascending a massive mountain. Near the edges, gravity would weaken, making the climb easier.

Strange Ocean Shapes

On a spherical Earth, oceans spread out naturally under the influence of gravity. But on a cubic Earth, the gravity’s unusual behavior would make oceans take on dome-like shapes in the middle of each face. This would cause oceans to form as large domes centered on each face, with each dome distinct due to the weakened gravity at the corners, making them visually remarkable.

Changes in Air and Weather

The gravity variations on a cubic Earth would also alter the atmosphere. Air density would be thicker at the center of each face and thinner near the edges. The thin air at the edges would result in colder temperatures and harsher weather, making life difficult. While the central areas might be relatively habitable, the edge zones would pose challenges for survival.

A Theoretical Concept Only

Even though imagining a cubic Earth is fascinating, it’s not practically possible. Earth’s rocks and crust aren’t strong enough to maintain a cube shape. In reality, there’s no material strong enough to withstand the gravitational pull needed for a cube-shaped planet. Over time, a cubic Earth would eventually collapse back into a sphere. However, this idea raises questions about our scientific theories and expands our imaginative capacity.

In further adventures of "Hollywood should have just asked us," here are a couple ideas that would make for a decent new version of Snow White. Stone and I came up with them last night. 

First off, the dwarves are just normal people for that region. By that I mean dwarfism is commonplace in the kingdom, which we see from various side characters and background extras. These seven are normal folks, not Fantasy Creatures. 

Also, they're a family living and working together. Our first thought was seven brothers, but why stop there? Doc is old enough to be the dad. Grumpy can be the uncle. Re-envision some of the others to be the mom and a sister or two. Dopey is the youngest kid, still figuring his way around a pickaxe. 

And the other idea is about the kiss. If that magic leads to a "time is paused while we have an adventure elsewhere" kind of otherworldly journey, then Snow White and the Prince can get to know each other properly. They can rescue each other from various dangers in whatever dreamland this is, find out they can actually work together pretty well, and only then does the spell release. 

You've got to be drift compatible to take down a sorceress and rule a kingdom. The dwarves will help. There are probably magical gemstones from those mines, not to mention lots of muscles from swinging a pickaxe all day. Hi-ho!
