Patricia’s Summer of Transformation

You never know what will push you into making a positive change.
For Patricia, it was the end of an unhealthy relationship. After months of emotional distress and emotional eating, she made the decision to drop the ex and drop some weight too.
HER LIFE
As a pre-med student majoring in bio-chemistry, a regular week for Patricia includes lab work, heavy study loads, volunteering at St. Amant, and possibly mid-terms. She tutors chemistry on campus and is involved in Women In Chemistry, a group that promotes diversity in chemistry professions, where Patricia hopes to inspire others like her. 
HER JOURNEY
Although she’s been a gym-enthusiast since 2016, her journey really only started this year — April 24th, Patricia remembers — in what she calls her summer of transformation. She walked in ready to make a change in time for an upcoming girl’s trip where she wanted to feel her best. With encouraging friendships and personal training sessions booked with our trainer Julie, she was ready to get on track.
“Julie was fantastic. She was just so encouraging and motivating.” 
Within two months she lost 20 pounds, and it gave Patricia the confidence to keep up her hard work.
Now she’s paired with Nikki, who Patricia says pushes her a lot. They focus on heavy lifting, compound exercises, and discovering new limits.
“I’m so grateful to her because everyday I come to the gym and push myself. Julie and Nikki really changed my life.”
Beyond the gym, Patricia made many diet changes as well— but they didn’t happen overnight. She started by switching out fast food for Freshii, and eventually followed her parents’ example of being vegetarian. Now, she’s found a balance that works for her that she calls “flexitarian.” Basically, she eats plant-based meals during the week and fish or chicken on weekends.
She believes balance is most important, making sure that at least two of her meals a day are healthy, and doesn’t allow herself to feel guilt over a Snickers during mid-terms.
HER GOALS
Before all of this, Patricia could only do one push up, and now she can do 12. Although she’s proud of her progress, she is constantly trying to improve, which is why she can never say she’s reached her goals.
She still wants to try new things, like the hot yoga or Centergy class at Shapes, and is looking forward to working on her flexibility. 
HER ADVICE
Have a routine but don’t be afraid to switch it up.
Group fitness classes are fantastic. Especially Blast, shout out to Kelly! She has so much energy.
Take note of who your spend your time with — it’s those people who influence your decisions.
