Did you know
Yamma Yamma..R.D. Burman was not satisfied with Mohammed Rafi's singing in this song and was planning to re-record it. However, that never happened because Rafi passed away soon after the original recording. It was the only song which R.D. Burman and Rafi sang together.
The January 1980 edition of Stardust magazine stated that when Parveen Babi went to Europe with Kabir Bedi, there was no hope of her returning back to India. The only other actress who had a westernized image who could replace Parveen Babi was Simi Garewal. Ramesh Sippy verbally spoke to Simi Garewal and told her the role was hers. But Parveen Babi returned back to work and Simi was bumped out of the film.
Parveen Babi suffered her first nervous breakdown on the sets of Shaan. When she completed to shoot of the song Pyar Karnewale she got the attack. After this song there is a scene Parveen Babi is in the car, she stops the car, then Amitabh Bachchan sits in the car, this scene was shot when Parveen Babi came back from U.S.and she resumed work by shooting this scene.

Apparently this story is based on that of Basic Instinct. Now I've never seen that movie, but anyone that knows movies knows about the scenes that made it controversial. And anyone that knows Bollywood knows those sort of scenes would never make it into the movie (which is fine, that's not why I was watching this movie anyways). But like, I figured there must've been something to that story, right? (Of course, reading about it now, I also read that it had overtly LGBTQ characters, which also may not have flown in Bollywood - especially in 2004.) … That, of course, means that they needed to alter the story a bit to make it flow and make it acceptable for the audience.
And - well, I don't know if they did that or just decided to leave it alone and see what happens, because, well - this is not a good movie. The acting is miserable, even with names like Manoj Bajpayee and Sharat Saxena and Isha Koppikar - folks whom you know can act. The music is horrific and the dancing, somehow, is even worse - and, on top of that, it works to automatically stunt any sort of progress that is being made in terms of tone and excitement and thrill (which, to be honest, there is essentially none). The story is bad, and predictable, and their clichéd 'reason why the criminal is doing the bad things' is, well, very cliché.
One of the biggest problems, though, is that none of our characters … well, let's go with main characters, because Sharat Saxena doesn't need to be included in this .. none of our main characters are the least bit likeable. Not at all! And, as the movie progresses, it gets even worse. I mean, maybe you think Dr. Mehak isn't so bad - but then, she's a doctor who is very clearly sleeping with her patient, so that's an ethical quandary that immediate makes my brain shut off. (Also, she's a doctor who is going to crime scenes, which makes no sense, and makes essentially no effort to hide their relationship, which also makes no sense - since she's supposed to be evaluating his mental condition for the department.) But our other two leads, right from the moment they show up, are shown to be ridiculously self-centered, self-absorbed, "I'm above the law" nobodies who you never want to even think about rooting for. It's a pain.
And probably the biggest death knell for the movie (much like Blue, yesterday) - it is so boring. Partially because of the random songs and scenes that undercut any build-up in momentum, or because of just having to spend too much time with our empathy-lacking characters, but nothing that happens is exciting in the least. There's a death, and then a visit to the crime scene - which makes sense - but that's immediately followed by Uday accosting Avantika or some random slow scene that adds little. Rinse and repeat, until the end. Her reasoning for everything makes no sense - like, so much built up hatred over years is insane. (And how did a young kid even know how to mess with the brakes in the car?!) You're just waiting for it to end, and hoping there's no more songs or new characters or any more random 'time for some emotion' scenes. Just waiting for them to officially reveal the baddie.
Yawn.

Vidya Vincent (Vidya Balan) takes up her new post as a Divisional Forest Officer during a series of tiger attacks. She works to safely move the tiger to a protected wildlife reserve while the local politicians hire tiger hunter Ranjan Rajhans (Sharat Saxena) to kill the tiger.
Sherni is a good environmentalist film that does a pretty good job showing why dangerous animals should still be allowed to live. It helps that the focus of the film is the tiger, a charismatic animal. It has good acting and a good story. I especially enjoyed Vijay Raaz as entomologist Hassan Noorani who helps the Forest Office. Favorite song is Bandar Baant (no subtitles).
Tumblr media
Journalist Medha (Aditi Balan) and Detective Sathyajith (Prithviraj Sukumaran) separately investigate Eva Maria's (Athmiya Rajan) murder.
Cold Case is a slightly supernatural thriller. I don't remember much of the film. Favorite song is Eeran Mukil (English subtitles).

During lockdown, Jithin (Jitin Puthenchery) and Maria (Rima Kallingal) go to a clinic because of a suspected pregnancy.
Santhoshathinte Onnam Rahasyam is an interesting watch because it fully takes place in the car Jithin and Maria are driving in. It is really about Maria and Jithin's relationship and their fears and hopes, as well as the mundanity of their drive during lockdown. I enjoyed it. Favorite song is Pakalukal (no subtitles).

Unke saath bhi acchi pehchaan ho gayi hai. With Shah Rukh Khan, I think I have only done 1 or 2 films. Aamir Khan ke saath bhi 2-3 films kari hai. It’s also been great working with these guys. Jitne bhi hamare heroes hai, woh basically acche log hai. They are hard-working and don’t have any ego problems. They are just like you and me

I mean, Saat Samundar Paar pretty much makes this entire movie, undoubtedly. Even now, years later, the catchiness is unmistakable. Absolutely love it.
As would be expected in an early 90s Bollywood movie, we have a 3-hour long (almost) multi-starrer action flick with traumatic, flashback-driven, backstories; confusion and mistrust amongst our stars until right before the climax; at least one song/dance for each of the couples; interspersed comedy and comic relief that is hit-or-miss; and pretty much every antagonist actor that was the rage at the time (though, maybe surprisingly, a couple of them take their turns as good guys here). I mean: Amrish Puri, Gulshan Grover, Tej Sapru, Kiran Kumar (briefly), Dalip Tahil, Sharat Saxena, Raza Murad, Vishwajeet Pradhan, and on-and-on.
And it jumps back-and-forth amongst this story, us knowing the truth even when the characters don't, until they need them to know. But thru that, we get some good scenes between the leads; some comedy from Chunky Pandey (and Gulshan Grover, as his sort-of foil); an introduction to Divya Bharti and Jyotsna Singh (also a farewell for her, as apparently this was the only movie she did); and, along with that, actresses who do actually get somewhat big roles. They even get a minute at being in charge in the climax, before Gulshan Grover somehow pulls a bunch of snakes out of nowhere (snakes that, after scaring them into dropping the guns - which, I feel you, I would've reacted the same - do absolutely nothing).
The biggest surprise, in a good way, was the Vishwatma theme music - it took me a minute when it first came on in the opening credits, but I finally did get where I knew it from: 'Mere Samne Hai,' an awesome slow-paced love song from Yaar Gaddar (which actually released two years after this movie). But that music played in the background frequently, especially in dramatic moments and during the climax fight and, honestly, while it's weird hearing what I know as music from a love song used in that way, it's pretty fitting in that way too. I really, really liked it. Post-movie, it's almost even taking over my headspace - and that's despite Saat Samundar Paar! But both are great!
The other songs are more 'meh', but the "oh oh oh oh oh" that shows up multiple times (first in Dil Le Gayi Teri Bindiya, then in Toofan, then in the final credits, which I figure is Dil Le Gayi again - which is weird, because why would you not use Saat Samundar Par at the ending?!) is pretty cool too. Especially, and this I'm completely serious about this, when Amrish Puri (and all the other baddies) start shaking a leg in Toofan. Like, so often the villains are so wooden and just 'evil all the time' and it's just ... entertaining ... to see them with this more human, onion-layer (to borrow from Shrek), "I want to dance" sort of mood (I mean, we frequently see it in a more vulgar, "ooh cute girl and I'm a creep" way, but this is less than and more just him dancing along and being like "I win, you lose" - and I'm all for it). Of course, we know what end is awaiting them while they don't, but that's the point, right - like, they might be villains, but clearly they also must enjoy something. And it's entertaining to see it come out here - something you probably would see less of now, in the shorter and usually "serious means full serious" movies, but back when you had 3 hour movies, you had the ability to throw in a comic angle to the baddies as well (again, see Gulshan Grover). Yeah, when Amrish started dancing there in that song, I definitely started laughing. ... They actually also danced in Dil Le Gayi Bindya, so clearly they're just a very dance-happy group of baddies, and I support that (as a non-dancer myself) completely. It's nice to see them have some semblance of a life. ... Of course, that doesn't chance the fact that they're all evil creeps and deserved exactly what they got. (Also, considering where she died and that it appeared to be Gulshan Grover's office, how did Naseeruddin's initial apparently 'thorough' search for his wife's killer not lead to any viable suspects?)
Bindya is no Tirchi Topi Wale, though it feels they were clearly going for that same sort of feeling with the song. But then, it's hard to recreate magic like that with the same sort of song - and they instead created it elsewhere with Saat Samundar Paar, which is one of my favoritest songs of all time.
I really did enjoy this movie - and, honestly, as I read the trivia about it, I'm glad they went with Chunky Pandey instead of Jackie Shroff. Not sure how well he would've worked in that role. But then, I haven't seen Tridev yet - so I'll add that to my list, I guess. But I guess I've just never been a huge Shroff fan, for some reason or another. Sunny Deol plays a role that I feel we've seen him in many times - before and after - and he does with it exactly what you'd expect. And I think all the leads do come together to make this pretty fun overall. Much enjoyed, even at its 2 hr 53 min runtime.
Honestly, sometimes, I really miss having these longer movies that combine everything - fun, action, romance, ridiculousness - and I wish that they'd go back to this - albeit, admittedly, less 'actresses are just here for show' story line. Like, yeah, if it is done poorly (which I know it very frequently was), 3 hours can drag, but if it is done well, 2.5-3 hrs can be a pretty entertaining movie. As this one is.
