Suffering For Obedience
In his book Miracle on the River Kwai, Ernest Gordon tells the true story of a group of POWs working on the Burma Railway during World War II.
"At the end of each day the tools were collected from the work party. On one occasion a Japanese guard shouted that a shovel was missing and demanded to know which man had taken it. He began to rant and rave, working himself up into a paranoid fury and ordered whoever was guilty to step forward. No one moved. “All die! All die!” he shrieked, cocking and aiming his rifle at the prisoners. At that moment one man stepped forward and the guard clubbed him to death with his rifle while he stood silently to attention. When they returned to the camp, the tools were counted again and no shovel was missing."
What can sustain the will to die for others, when you are innocent? Jesus was carried and sustained in his love for us by “the joy that was set before him.” He banked on a glorious future blessing and joy, and that carried and sustained him in love through his suffering.
Woe to us if we think we should or can be motivated and strengthened for radical, costly obedience by some higher motive than the joy that is set before us. When Jesus called for costly obedience that would require sacrifice in this life, he said in Luke 14:14,
“You will be blessed, because they cannot repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
In other words, be strengthened now in all your losses for Christ’s sake, because of the joy set before you.

The drive from downtown Dubai to Khor Fakkan was dramatic and indelibly impressive. It was the leaving behind of a futuristic steely utopia, then past the desert landscapes to an enclave of Sharjah that is meditatively mountainous, opening up to the cyan-to-cerulean waters of the Gulf of Oman.
I hired a driver who came to pick me up from my hotel in downtown Dubai. It was around 7 am. We got to Khor Fakkan around 9:00 am, considering some slight traffic getting out of Dubai.
The first stop was at Sheesh Park. A lush green park surrounded by rounded ridges of the Hajar mountains that opened up in 2020. It has bbq picnic areas for families. There's a cafe by an 80 feet artificial waterfall. And winding staircase up the mountains to extensive walkways with panoramic views of the park.
This was a great recreational spot for families, hikers, or people just getting away from urban sprawls to breathe better and rejuvenate. However, I wouldn't say that this place is accessible to anyone who uses a wheelchair. Unless the individual or a personal caretaker can maneuver the wheelchair through uneven roads leading up to the cafe, it's not a hundred percent accessible.

Rajwa Al Saif’s 9-day university study trip to Dubai, 2016
Rajwa, along with her 9 classmates, undertook a nine-day trip about sustainable design in Dubai during spring break 2016. Her father’s company generously sponsored the entire trip. Below is an article from the university’s blog.
Architecture Students Explore Sustainable Design in Heart of Dubai Thursday, April 14, 2016, By Elaine Wackerow
Each semester, advanced-level architecture students enrolled in Syracuse Architecture visiting critic studios have the opportunity to engage in a unique, full-scope design experience led by highly knowledgeable faculty and/or architects. Within a small setting, students work in teams to pursue a common studio objective. They learn to consider a full range of contextual factors in their work through site visits and first-hand engagement with cross-disciplinary thought leaders in public and private sectors.
In spring 2016, 10 students in Assistant Professor Tarek Rakha’s “Sustainable Start Ups in the Desert” studio received a once-in-a-lifetime educational benefit, a nine-day trip to Dubai during spring break, thanks to the generosity of Saudi-based firm El Seif Engineering Contracting Co.
“The Dubai trip was an exhilarating learning medium for Syracuse Architecture students,” says Rakha, who is also a Center of Excellence faculty research fellow. “Not only did they experience one of the built environment spectacles of the Middle East, but also they presented their projects for feedback from prominent practicing architects and engineers in the region, as well as academic leaders focusing on energy in buildings.”
“What made this trip so memorable for me,” says Rajwa Alseif ’17, “was seeing the students in the studio experience Arabic culture and architecture for the first time. Dubai is very intriguing, having contemporary architecture while also attempting to maintain the traditional beauty of the Arabic culture and history.”
Dubai is inarguably one of the world’s most spectacular cities. The city’s amenities often evoke descriptives such as “world’s largest,” an outgrowth of an affluent, oil-rich economy. But Dubai’s sprawling development in the face of climatic conditions has created unique challenges and opportunities. Increasing knowledge and technologies in the area of sustainable design practices are paving the way for new thinking.
In his studio, Rakha’s students have been developing speculative approaches to sustainable design of an entrepreneurial startup campus on a site located in the heart of Dubai. The studio project has been divided into three stages: urban campus design, start-up incubator building development and feasibility analysis of developed design, with a focus on energy and sustainability. During their trip, students benefited from a wide range of experiences to inform their projects.
Beginning with a visit to the American University of Sharjah, students attended a lecture that gave them background on early master planning and socioeconomic factors that influenced Dubai’s development. “A trip to ‘Old’ Dubai,” says Colin Hoover G’17, “gave insight into both cultural heritage as well as potential passive strategies that could be used to reduce energy in contemporary buildings.”
A visit to architecture firm CallisonRTKL gave students the opportunity for a guided tour of Dubai in addition to a critique on their midterm projects. Alice Gorodetsky ’18 reports that a visit to Dubai’s Design District (D3) included experience with an intricate model of the district’s master plan. Steven Veligrinis of Perkins + Will joined them to “discuss his design decisions and confer with the group about relevant topics in practice such as undesirable ‘green-washing.’”
A day that included a visit to engineering firm Buro Happold focused largely on the theme of extreme experience in the built environment. With Buro Happold’s John Sullivan as their guide, “We explored the biggest mall in the world,” says Yen-Chun Liu MS ‘16, “and then took the world’s fastest elevator to the top of the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the word.” A follow-up tour of the firm ended with students presenting their projects for feedback by firm consultants.
“In Masdar City in Abu Dhabi,” reports Christian Martinez G‘17, “we had opportunity to use the famous and fully automated Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system to travel to the Masdar Institute.” Students delivered quick project presentations to the Masdar Institute engineering team and learned about the institute’s Abu Dhabi-based research.
Additional outings throughout the city region—including the Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque (UAE’s largest)—provided students with additional insight, but there was also time for “just fun” experiences including a desert safari, dune dashing and camel rides.
The studio is in its final phase of project development and preparing for a symposium, “Start Ups in the Desert: Finding Value in Environmentally Responsive Built Environments,” on Monday, April 25, from 9 a.m.-noon in the Slocum Hall first-floor atrium. Discussions and presentations will focus on the architecture and urbanism of the UAE, Dubai and the Gulf, and the value of sustainability in the desert. The symposium will also serve as the final review of student projects. Guest presenters with Gulf-based work expertise include: D. Rodman Henderer, senior vice president, RTKL, and chair, Syracuse Architecture Advisory Board; Christoph Reinhart, associate professor, MIT School of Architecture and Planning; and Nezar Alsayyad, Professor of Architecture, Planning, Urban Design and Urban History, College of Environmental Design, University of California at Berkeley.
Says Alseif, the symposium student organizer, “The studio is looking forward to participating in this culminating event, sharing their projects with other students and faculty, as well as learning from an interesting team of experts who will provide helpful insights on sustainability issues in the Gulf.”
Student reporters Austin Adams ’18, Alice Gorodetsky ’18, Colin Hoover G’17, Victoria Hughes ’18, Yen-Chun Liu MS ’16, Seungah Sally Lee MS ’16, Christian Martinez G’17, Killian Miles G’17 and Derek Dongmin Shin ’18 contributed to this story.

Faith Forward
The ache comes unexpected. The random sight of a yellow door turns a handle in your memory. A restaurant song plays a tune that returns you to former times. The passing smell of a backyard meal takes you to a table long ago. For a few moments, you grow quiet and thoughtful - remembering, reliving, perhaps reaching for something once loved, now lost.
We name it nostalgia. The wistful backward glance. The photo album of the mind. The string that tugs the heart from years gone by. The yearning to find a bridge across the gap of canyon time.
For many, nostalgia comes as infrequently as a stranger at the door, and leaves just as quickly. But others know the ache more intimately. Perhaps because they have lost more than most, perhaps because they have a sentimental bent, perhaps because their present life holds little pleasure, the past lives vividly before them. Nostalgia is no stranger.
Backward glances, even backward longings, have their good purposes in the lives of God’s children. If we allow it, nostalgia itself can become a prophet of the Lord. But nostalgia can also take a darker turn, can tell a sadder tale. As the winds of memory blow from yesterday to today, they can carry a whisper barely heard but deeply felt: “Your best days are behind you.”
The Greeks of old spoke of a Golden Age, a lost time of peace and prosperity, happiness and wholeness. Many of us, without pretending the past was perfect, likewise discern a golden glow in former days. The walls of our heart, if not of our home, hold pictures of better times, of youthful laughter and young romance, of beginning ambitions and a body less broken. Once, we lived in a land without shadow, or at least without these shadows.
We walk today in the Age of Bronze, it seems, or Iron. The pages of the present lie rough and plain; the golden days are gone. Even for those with happy lives, today may seem more sorrowful than yesterday. Amid present joys, many can still hear the soft sounds of children grown, of loves lost, of dreams that never took flight. Autumn comes to every life. The leaves fall from our happiest days.
And the future? We recite by creed “the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting,” but for many the light of such days shines dimly. The eye of memory often sees clearer than the eye of faith. Heaven will be a happy place, no doubt, and Jesus’s face a sight to cure all sorrow. But today, what was weighs more heavily than what will be.
So speaks nostalgia’s bleaker voice. But in the midst of such remembrances, we may hear another speak:
“Say not, ‘Why were the former days better than these?’ For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.” (Ecclesiastes 7:10)
The pangs of nostalgia can lead us into folly if we let them. They can force past, present, and future into a familiar story often told but largely untrue. “Your best days are behind you,” we may hear nostalgia say. But wisdom says otherwise...
Past gifts, however wonderful, were only a taste, a whisper, a window, a trail: “the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited,” as C.S. Lewis puts it ('The Weight of Glory', 31). They were first-fruits promising a harvest, olive branches heralding a new earth, the grapes of Canaan bidding us to look beyond the Jordan of death to the land of our inheritance.
As God once said to his backward-looking people,
“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.” (Isaiah 43:18)
Behold, the God of wonders does a new thing, dawns a new day. From the grave he has “brought life and immortality to light” (II Timothy 1:10), and now he waits to receive us. Soon and very soon, we will dwell in a world where sadness cannot live (Revelation 21:4). Soon and very soon, we will see the Person behind all our past joys (Revelation 22:4).
Our past may hold the happiest life this world has ever seen. But compared to the future God holds for his people, even that past becomes shadow and mist, broken tune and burnt image. So, when nostalgia visits, by all means ache and long, crave and thirst, pine and yearn - but not for the past. Rather, hunger for heaven and for home.
In Christ, our best days always and forever lie ahead.
