Listen to Your Heart
She watched the airplane take off from the tarmac, tears pouring down her face as she says her final goodbyes to him. Her lover. Her everything. But his life was back there, in DC where they had first met, all those years ago, not here in Israel. That was her home, or at least it use to be, and will once again. But she couldn’t stay here any longer, not with what she had done. And now, after what she had done with him, if she ever went back there, to that job, she wouldn’t be able to go back to how they use to be, when they were just partners.
And she could definitely not go back to that, not after his months long stay at her farm house. She can never forget the way he makes her feel. Going back to work, being with him everyday and not being allowed to touch him, so she made that final decision to not go back to America. To stay in the house her father left her; where she was born.
It was the hardest decision she had ever had to make.
That was over two years ago.
Her house is gone. He is gone. Their daughter is gone. And here she is, alone, with her cellphone in her hand. Fifteen missed calls, from him. No one else, just him. By now she bets that he had met their daughter and he had been attempting fate by calling her, even after claiming on the news that she is dead. And it breaks her heart every time she has to let it ring. Oh, she wants to answer him, she wants to hear his voice again. She wants to talk to her baby girl again. She’s never gone this long without being with her little one.
Her heart screams at her to go to him, to fly to Washington and pull him into a hug and kiss, and never let go. But she knew she couldn’t do that, they would know she would go there, to him. She has a different plan, anyways. She has had it since she packed that picture in their daughter’s diaper bag; to Paris, she had always loved Paris. She just hopes he gets the hint.
Her cell rings again as she’s heading out the door of the hotel room. Her thumb hovers over the green button before she regrettably removes it from the screen; she lets it go to voicemail. With a sigh, she makes her way out of the hotel, and soon, out of the country.
She rests her head against the wall of the plane as it takes off of the desert ground. Her phone has rang twice since she was in the airport, and this is the first time it’s been silent for so long, now that it was on airplane mode. Each time he has called her, she has come closer to answering, going against Orli’s wishes. But she has to stay strong, she’ll see them soon.
Five hours pass a lot quicker than she expects. Her book is finished and she couldn’t help but think of him, The Little Prince, over the past couple years, when she was feeling particularly lonely, she plays the old movie, to the point where she can quote along with the added lines of the movie. She only wishes she had decided to pack her laptop in her carry-on so she could watch it.
The air is warm in Paris for the nice May weather. Flashes of the last time she was in the city comes to her quickly. The hotel, restaurant, the cafe, anything that holds a memory to her. Without a second thought, she heads to the hotel she has booked and drops off her luggage before heading to the little cafe on the corner.
Her phone rings again before she makes it to the cafe, keeping to herself, she again doesn’t answer it. However, when she arrives and orders her coffee, she pulls it out and dials her voicemail to listen to the messages he has left her.
“Ziva… W-why didn’t you tell me? You could’ve called.”
He was upset, and rightly so. She knew she shouldn’t have kept it from him, and she regrets ever hiding her pregnancy and daughter from him. She had spent every moment of her pregnancy with him on her mind, scared of what he would say if she told him. Worried that he might not even want their daughter, even if her anxiety was far fetched, it had kept her from telling him. Even the fear of him quitting his job and and coming to her was something she wouldn’t wish him to ever do. She knows he’d drop everything for her.
“There is so much that I have missed, please tell me, why?”
She was just trying to keep him safe, but in the end, she just broke his heart, she can hear it in his voice. Now look where it got her. Her home was gone, she and her daughter were in danger, and he believed her to be dead.
“Ziva, we got the guy who did it, you’re safe.”
That was a relief. She didn’t have to hide anymore. She can prove to him that she is in fact, still alive. She can finally go to him, and they can be happy together for the first time since he stayed with her. That time alone, they were free to do as they pleased, and it resulted in a beautiful baby girl. And now they were free to be at peace again.
“Tim and Jimmy have been fawning over Tali since she got here, they hate to see us go.”
Her eyes starts to tear up. She wishes she could have taken her daughter to see her friends in person. Something which she had been thinking of doing many times since her baby girl was born. Showing Gibbs that he does have a grandchild, her friends that they do have a niece. But she didn’t, she stayed in hiding where she thought they were safe from the dangers of the outside world. Now it was her daughter’s father who had to introduce her to her extended family, she just hopes that the little girl understands what was going on.
“Dad is happy to finally have a grandchild, he wants to come with us, but I told him no.”
She only wishes her own father had gotten to meet and dot on her daughter too. But she was grateful that Senior was able to meet her, someone he can start anew with, someone who doesn’t know his past mistakes. She had told her daughter about her grandfather, but kept his mistakes to herself. She would rather have her daughter see him as a hero than a cunning con-man.
“Well, we’ve booked our flight out, we’ll see you when we see you.”
That last message was sent nearly eight hours before, meaning that they should be arriving anytime now. Sipping her coffee, she stares down at her phone on the table. She wasn’t so sure if he was going to call her again or if he was going against the odds and just showing up to the cafe. It would probably be safer for her if he just shows up in front of her. She doesn’t know what she’d say if she had to suddenly hear his voice again. After all these years, his voice still made her weak in the knees.
Around her, voices mingles into one, French layered over each other, very few other languages mixed in, but one stood out. Hebrew. She looks up hastily, searching for the voice. Someone was speaking it not to far away. “Aba, where is Ima?” The reply that came was broken, as if he didn’t speak hebrew all the time, but practiced it every so often.
“Soon, baby.”
That voice.
Her heart stops.
Her phone rings.
Looking down at the phone in front of her, she reads the name. It’s him. She lets it ring for a few moments, taking the time to calm her racing heart, before she answers it.
“T-Tony?”
He didn’t answer her, but in the crowd, he waves to her, he walks up to her, her daughter balanced on his shoulders. There is was, after all these years apart, he was here in front of her. Was this a dream? I must be. She pinches her wrist, She’s really awake, this is really happening.
Before she knows it, he’s standing in front of her, towering over her and the table. “Ziva.” He sighs, a smile growing on his face.
“Ima!” Their daughter giggles from her perch, her arms stretched towards her.
She gets up from the table, her eyes never leaving his, and walks into his arms.
“You knew to come.” She whispers, staring into his eyes, tears glistening in the sunlight.
He was quiet for a moment, leaning in for a kiss. “I listened to my heart.” He closes the gap and presses his lips against hers.

👨‍👩‍👧-Aaron you say
Tumblr media
Ah, yes, her ex-mistake. Folding her arms across her torso, Kaya sharply exhales.
“…so you wanna know about my ex, huh?” Like many of the things and people in here life… where to start is always the question. Frankly, she’d rather avoid talking about him every chance she gets. But the inbox has to be appeased, and it’s not like Frisk is around at the moment anyway…
Kaya huffs, her arms folding tighter as her glare grows sharper from the ugly, distasteful memories coming back to her again, as they always do.
“…Okay, sit down and shut up, it’s a long-ass story, and I’m only gonna tell it once.”
Tumblr media
“It all started with a stupid teenager doing stupid teenage things because her parents were terrible at their jobs and knew nothing about having a disabled kid,” she starts with a slight sneer.
“I came out of my mom’s snatch kicking and screaming, and stayed kicking and screaming for years. Then, around elementary school, they introduced ABA therapy. I was emotionally and mentally abused all through elementary and middle school, and became a terrified, depressed shell of a kid who would do, say, and repress anything I had to just to make my parents happy. So they wouldn’t yell at me or grab me or take away something vital to my mental health.”
Tumblr media
“Then high school came around, I’d just hit puberty, and I decided I’d had enough to being bullied by my own parents, my teachers, and the other students, and I became an A-grade bitch to everyone. Just to try to give myself control and empowerment in my life, I went from one extreme to another. I was a dumb, emotionally repressed teenager who jumped back to being a rebel, so I did a lot of shitty things. I had anger issues, was violent, and hung out with a lot of bad kids. I didn’t bully anyone, really, but I got into a lot of fights and only barely avoided getting arrested from vandalism and underage drinking a lot. Smoke weed a lot too. I was a rotten kid, but… honestly, it felt better than letting people grab my hands, shake me, yell at me and push my around… I was 14 and stupid, sue me.”
Tumblr media
“Yeah, I make it sound like Aaron was one of the bad ones, but he was actually one of the only decent kids in high school at the time. He came from a pretty well-off family and kinda took pity on me. He wasn’t scared of me like some of the other kids, but he didn’t really pick a fight with me either. He was a good kid at the time, or at least that was the impression I got as a dumb, naive fourteen-year-old. He was nice to me, gave me rides home when I felt scared to call my parents, hung out with me, got me out of weed, booze and crime, talked to me, listened… He was good to me. Not sure whether that was genuine and he turned into an asshole or if he was always an ass trying to get into my pants, but it doesn’t matter. He’s a dick now.”
Tumblr media
“I fell hard for the guy, being the idiot teenager I was. I was convinced that he was an angel there to save me from my shit-hole situation. Needless to say, we… did the deed. A LOT, actually. And finally, of course, we conceived Frisk when I was 15, had them when I was 16. Of course my parents weren’t happy, but that worked out for me because I hated them at the time. Was under the mindset if they hated it, I was doing something right. But even my grandmother, who was the only other decent person in my life, was voicing concerns about how fast I was jumping into things. And… like a dumbass, I ignored her. I was…”
Her glare finally falters and her face falls. As dumb as she always remembers she was in hindsight, she could never deny that she really did love the guy back in the day. At the time, he’d saved her, as far as she was concerned…
Tumblr media
“I was in love… I… really thought he was my soulmate. So… I moved in with him after Frisk was born, and at first, everything was just great. I just stayed home with Frisk while he went to work, and we got married a week after I turned 18. But… once we made it legal and I was actually tied to him, things… started changing.”
Tumblr media
“He never wanted to actually take care of Frisk. They were like a cute commodity to him; he never wanted to feed them, change their diapers, put them down for their nap, or look after them after daycare, it was ALWAYS on ME. Which I mean, fine, I didn’t wanna work and was controlling and protective over Frisk. But he never picked up the slack at home, he just went out to work, went drinking with his work buddies, and came home with dinner eventually.”
Tumblr media
“And it just… got worse. No matter how stressed or sick I was, he’d never pick up the slack. He just enjoyed the perks and fun parts of fatherhood without trying to put in any actual work. Which I always justified with him being the breadwinner and being tired all the time. But when we learned Frisk was autistic when they were three…”
Tumblr media
“He completely. Fucking. Abandoned them. All of a fucking SUDDEN, he had zero patience for just about anything Frisk ever did. Completely ignored them, got impatient with them whenever they started stimming–which, you know, I got onto him about. We fought a lot, and Frisk would always start crying because he’d convinced them our marriage problems were THEIR fault! Because I wasn’t going to let him snap at Frisk over shit they couldn’t help as a fucking four year old!”
Tumblr media
“He deteriorated over two years’ time since we found out Frisk was autistic; he did his best to be good to me despite his mental shit, but he wanted absolutely nothing to do with Frisk. He was a pathetic shitstain of a human being. He started coming home late, getting drunk, we fought just about every goddamn day, and he kept getting onto Frisk, trying to make them be like me. ‘Your mom was like you and she learned how to be normal, why the fuck can’t you listen and learn to be normal–’ Like, asshole, do you even know me?! Since when have I ever been normal?! All that shit he sold me about accepting me as I was turned out to be bullshit.”
Tumblr media
“I tried so hard to make it work, I tried to patch things up between me, Aaron and Frisk for years… I’d always been able to wrangle him in whenever he started yelling at Frisk, help them sort things out, and most of the time, he’d apologize… but the second he actually put his hands on them - grabbing their hands to make them stop stimming when they were crying, hard enough to bruise them, just after they turned five - I shut the whole thing down right then and there. I knew where this was gonna go and I wasn’t gonna see it through with Frisk. I wasn’t gonna let Frisk go through a worse version of what I went through.”
Tumblr media
“In hindsight… I should have shut everything down when he started neglecting them. That’s just as much abuse as putting your hands on a kid is… but I was delusional. I was selfish… and wanted to make my relationship with the man he used to be work. But no matter how much I may have still loved him… I wasn’t gonna let him put his hands on my child a second time. Yeah, we fought physically and we damn near killed each other… pretty sure I scarred Frisk with that, but… ya know. I won, and now that prick knows better than to show his face around me or Frisk ever again.”
Tumblr media
“There’s… a lot I should have done differently back then; a lot I should have done for Frisk’s sake. I know I wasn’t the best parent in the world for them at the time. I put my relationship before their wellbeing at the time, even if I didn’t realize it, and to be honest… I’ll be ashamed of myself for that ‘til the day I die. It shouldn’t have had to escalate to physical violence for me to wake the fuck up and get Frisk and me out of there, but it did…”
Tumblr media
“So… it’s just me and Frisk now, and even though I had to step up and find work out of nowhere, start being the breadwinner AND the child rearer while still having shit support from my ‘told-you-so’ing family… we’re better off without that asshole in our lives. I know there are a lot of people who… might be better for Frisk, as a parent, but… I still wanna do the best I can for them and their future little sibling now that I know better.”
Tumblr media
“And if that prick shows up again, this baby’s gonna have to deal for five seconds so I can suplex the dickweed. Not that he really would, he already only begrudgingly pays child support, but… ya know. Always good to be prepared. So yeah. I hate my ex’s fucking guts and I was an idiot for ever marrying him.”
Tumblr media
“The end. Any questions?”

#AMD114 SO YOU ARE A PASTOR ?
My father was a carpenter who became a university don, I have written of how he didn’t get the opportunity due to lack of funds but seized the opportunity with both hands after securing a scholarship later in life. My mother was a school teacher who ended as headmistress. These two great people were my earliest role models in life as they used their lives to paint pictures of examples for mine. They were both hardworking, diligent and had buckets of perseverance to boot . You could set your watch using my Dad’s schedule at University of Ibadan ( Nigeria) till he retired or till we demanded he retired. My mum was a very strong woman who feigned weakness. This made her detractors undermine her to their peril. She was a multitasker , a business woman and a very good teacher who combined this with raising five very strange children . It took me years to appreciate this great woman who quietly ran our home as our dad was called the head.
When I was young I wanted to be an inventor largely because Dad bought me a book of 101 inventors or something like that ? I was so persuaded I would be one . A little later I got a child’s dissecting set as birthday present ( yes , used for be legal ) and hey presto I was going to be a doctor . This notion was largely proposed by my dad who already had a plan for his five children .So you can imagine the pain I must have caused him when I crashed out of med school at 21. Then a transformation took hold of my life and I discovered how to make money. Prior to this, I was just a book worm . My first enterprise was to make shoes in Aba and I sold them specifically to medical students , I had leveraged my experience as a previous medical student to access that market and I was privy to the fact that many medical students at the time had money but no time . My old colleagues who felt my life was doomed to failure also patronised me emotively out of pity . Whichever way I made money . My enterprise soon increased to handling clothes sent by old friends from the UK and US. I was a regular feature at the female halls not for the reasons I used to visit as a piranha but as a budding entrepreneur. It was not uncommon to see me with a car with the boot loaded with female underwear , shoes , bags etc. I was not ashamed to make money legitimately. Yet, many in my circles felt I was doomed to be a failure for having crashed out of med school . My journey later led to satellite dishes with the pioneers in Nigeria as i helped to instal in a few homes of some rich and powerful. I remembered running into old mates who appeared to have made it before I even got started but I made money legitimately and my business skills were expanding. This later led me to a brief incursion into oil In warri ( Nigeria) where my eyes were opened . By the time I left Nigeria, I was already working with organisations that sold christian materials to big organisations and distributing them across west Africa. My last job in Nigeria was as a business manager supplying christian materials to a niche market . Later on in the UK, I moved into selling furniture ( very lucrative), pharmaceuticals selling and marketing for various Pharma organisations and rising to a Business Development Executive at Johnson and Johnson. While working at Pharma, started an IT company with a friend that serviced some big firms and went on to start a facility management company in Ireland with another friend servicing FIAT. Life was good .i pursued my postgrad in Oxford ( business) in order to consolidate , then the Lord vividly asked me to go into teaching 😳. Yet again all the stigma of failure came rushing back from med school . So I went back to Oxford Brookes to pick up a teaching postgrad. My first client for private tuition was a millionaire with one child who was failing . Let me leave the rest to your imagination . In 13 years I have taught in close to 50 schools in the UK, giving me an uncommon insight into how education works in this country and why it’s been so successful. During that time I went into private management consulting and training alongside my teaching . I also opened a real estate company and made incursions into farming . I have also authored 13 books being sold worldwide .
So, when I’m introduced to many as pastor , you can imagine the disappointment on their faces because they don’t know my story . It’s as if I’m some sort of parasite . I know we have examples littering the world of parasitic pastors but many are decent individuals whose story may not necessarily be as colourful as mine but still wearing different hats and balancing so much in order to help people live a Godly life and make it to the one after. There are many roads to success and we must not pigeon hole it to just a few like our parents generation did. They made you feel like if you were not a doctor , lawyer , engineer or likes , you were a failure . How about the hard working technocrats , or out of the box entrepreneurs or teachers informing our children and shaping our children’s future, the sports people , entertainers ?
What I’m trying to say in so many words is you are not necessarily the sum total of what you do but who you are at your core
. I’m a husband , dad , intelligent, hardworking, visionary , academic and progressive and yes , I’m proudly a pastor!
Blessings

The Law School Admission Test
By Brian Uhler, University of Chicago Class of 2021
August 7, 2020
Tumblr media
The Law School Admission Test, or “LSAT”, is a test created by LSAC (the Law School Admission Council) designed to test a candidate’s aptitude for the type of thinking necessary for lawyers and to predict the success of students entering law school. This is similar to the medical school admission test, the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), among other standardized tests used for entrance to graduate schools. As a standardized test, the LSAT is considered the universal standard for ABA-accredited law schools and Canadian law schools.(1) In fact, the LSAT is generally considered to be the most important part of an applicant’s profile, sometimes even thought to be twice as important as an applicant’s undergraduate GPA! (7) But what exactly does the LSAT do to test thinking skills and predict law school success?
To understand the current methods used by the LSAT to test candidates, it is necessary to understand the test’s history and evolution. Standardized testing for assessing applicants for schools began in the early 20th century; before standardized testing, schools would have individual, distinct admissions tests or have none at all. In 1901, the College Entrance Examination Board was founded with the goal of creating a universal standardized test. Then, in 1926, the SAT was introduced as a test for college aptitude, and this test is now one of the world’s most widely taken standardized tests. (3) This new trend in standardized testing was quickly picked up by law schools, as they too wanted a way to screen candidates before entry to their schools. Early admissions tests for law school were fairly unused due to their similarity to general intelligence tests, but in the 1940s, the first (and now essentially only) test developed to specifically test for legal aptitude and predict success in law school was administered: the LSAT. The test originally was comprised of 10 sections and would take an entire day to complete, mostly testing passive verbal skills. (3) However, it has since evolved into the form it takes today, a shorter test with fewer sections that still tests the critical skills of a future law student. But how can these skills be tested; how could a single test adequately display a candidate’s ability to think in the way required of lawyers and predict success in law school?
Since its evolution from its early beginnings, the LSAT has changed from a 10-section test to one with six sections, each with a time limit of 35 minutes, scored on a scale of 120-180. However, there are only four types of sections; Logical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Analytical Reasoning (commonly referred to as “logic games”), and Writing. On the traditional, current LSAT, there is one section on Writing and five other sections comprised of the remaining three types – two Logical Reasoning sections, one Reading Comprehension section, and one Analytical reasoning section, and then a fifth section that could be any one of these three types. (2)This fifth section is unscored and is used by the creators of the LSAT to create future tests. However, the test-taker has no knowledge of which section is the unscored section, so he or she must earnestly attempt all of them.
Nowadays, students may take the Writing section remotely from the comfort of their own homes on the LSAC’s website. An LSAT Writing section typically poses a situation in which two choices are given, and then some facts are given that could be used as pros or cons of either choice. Then, the test taker must use these facts to argue for one of the two choices. The remaining three types of sections are all multiple-choice with five possible answer choices, rather than a free response style like on Writing. In Logical Reasoning sections, test takers are given roughly 25 questions to answer – each question contains a few sentences that form an argument or a set of facts, and these are followed by a question such as “which of these answers would Strengthen this argument”, or perhaps “given the statements made, which of these answers must also be true?” This section, as named, quite literally tests a person’s ability to logically reason. On the Reading Comprehension section, test takers are given four reading passages each about a page long. They are then asked various questions about each passage, with questions such as “which of these answers is the main point of the passage”, or, “with which of these statements is the author of the passage most likely to agree?” This section tests a person’s ability to understand a point of view, retain the relevant information, and quickly apply it to questions. Finally, the Analytical Reasoning section, more often called “logic games”, contains four “games” in which there exists a situation and a set of rules that govern the possibilities of the situation, and then questions are asked about the game. For example, a logic game may arise that specifies that there are seven people, people A-G, and each works one day per week with nobody working on the same day. Then, some rules may specify that person A works on Monday, person B can’t work on Tuesday, person C must work on Sunday if person D works on Wednesday, and so on. After these rules there are questions, such as, “if person B works on Thursday, then who must work on Saturday?” This tests a person’s analytical skills and ability to quickly process information. However, logic games typically require a person to draw out some diagrams to help keep track of all of the information and examine the possibilities, and this has recently posed a problem for some test takers.
A recent court case brought against LSAC by a blind student has made waves in the LSAT community. Law school hopeful Angelo Binno, a legally blind student, wanted LSAC to waive the Analytical Reasoning section from his test because he was unable to draw the diagrams that are essentially necessary for success on the section. LSAC refused, and Binno filed a lawsuit claiming that LSAC was in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act. LSAC agreed to gradually remove the Analytical Reasoning section of the test, and by 2023 they will have developed a new way to test a person’s analytical reasoning skills. (4)
As well as this recent occurrence resulting in a fairly drastic change to the test, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced LSAC to adapt how it administers the test during (at least) this year. Currently, LSAC is offering what they call the LSAT-Flex, a remotely proctored version of the same test. (5)On this test, rather than five sections taken in person with at least two Logical Reasoning sections, at least one Reading Comprehension section, and at least one Analytical Reasoning section, the LSAT-Flex has three total sections – one of each of these types. Otherwise, the test is the same: it features the same types of questions and the same amount of questions per section. Some may be concerned that the remote proctoring system will allow for cheating on the test, but there are two factors that substantially reduce this possibility. First of all, the proctoring system used for the LSAT-Flex is not only simply to proctor, it was specifically designed to stop cheating. Secondly, and more importantly, the LSAT is an extraordinarily difficult test to cheat on. Unlike many other tests, the LSAT is not a knowledge-based test, it is a thinking-based test; there is no book a person can open up that will tell him or her the answers. The LSAT-Flex has been a relatively successful test so far – the tests scheduled for March and April were cancelled while LSAC created the LSAT-Flex, and since then, Flex tests have been offered in May, June, July, and another one scheduled for late August.(5)
However, while LSAC did a respectable job of adapting their test to the recent pandemic, no plan is foolproof. On the recent July LSAT-Flex, a glitch in the system while transferring tester information caused the answers of about 140 testers to get lost. (6) LSAC has refunded these testers the money required to take the test and has offered them a free retake exam. While this issue was not widespread (affecting only 140 of 14,000 test takers, about 1%), it is still a frustrating occurrence for those affected. However, given how rare of an issue this was, we can hope that the test takers are able to take the test as soon as possible and that the LSAT continues to evolve and improve to be the best standardized test for law schools that LSAC can make.

Introduction
I am an autistic person, as I’m sure you know. And, as the title suggests, while I am not literally a cryptid, I might as well be a cryptid, at least according to autism researchers, for a number of reasons. You see, for starters,I was diagnosed with autism in the late 80s as a baby, and I mean a literal baby, just over a year old, because my mom (who later realized she was autistic and self-diagnosed as a result of watching me grow) talked to the doctors and was like “Oh by the way, I noticed that other babies look at me but my kid does not. Hmmm. I wonder why that is”. That’s the first cryptid point right there - researchers are still looking for ways to diagnose autistic kids at age 2 (so they can push that hellish ABA therapy on them - boooo) even though like two seconds of observation would enable them to see who is autistic much earlier. Which is probably a good thing if that kid has the type of parents who would push them into ABA. Good thing my parents didn’t buy into that crap, no matter how much later experience with abusive assholes convinced me they did or it was only a matter of time before they did.
Secondly, since I didn’t know how to please IQ testers when I was really little and had not been pushed through official ABA by my parents, the “experts” claimed I was (and this is their word, not mine) “retarded”. Which, as we know, is a slur, but was a medical term in use back then, before they said “intellectually disabled”. Fine thing to put on a baby. And here’s the thing: No intellectually disabled person can write the way I’m doing right now. So one more cryptid point - apparently the real me didn’t exist to them then, either.
Thirdly, when I was really little, a dog (whose owner foolishly claimed he “loves kids”) got its mouth around my throat, and my autistic nervous response of freezing up in the face of that type of danger is the only reason I’m not six feet under right now, as pretty much any neurotypical kid would have been when confronted with a situation like that. So one more cryptid point for me. Especially since I always have and still love dogs, and if anything, that incident had me firmly convinced that dogs are not mindless killing machines, because if they were, I’d be dead. Whereas a response I had to a teacher ducking me underwater and giving me fake praise was more normal - it made me afraid of the water, and only a teacher from the YMCA cured me of that fear, whereas the special ed middle school I went to, which had a pool, only punished me for that fear. I’ll get back to special ed later.
Yay “errorless learning! (/sarcasm)
I also used to stack a little table on top of a chair when I was a kid to reach stuff because for some reason, my dad always put Cheerios on top of a really high wardrobe (Gee, thanks) And I never fell because I was careful climbing that precarious structure. One more cryptid point for me - kids normally aren’t able to do that.
I am also a person who was in private Special Ed schools from the time I was like ten months old throughout high school, and my middle and high school in particular was emotionally abusive to me. While they never officially claimed to use ABA, they did - if it walks like ABA, talks like ABA, and quacks like ABA, it is ABA no matter what you call it. And really, it’s quite weaselly presenting your core discipline method as like a fun extra for your students to earn (which I found out on their website years later). It’s especially weaselly given that this method was the exact method used to punish me for not swimming a length of the school’s pool due to the fear of the water (and especially the deep end) that I mentioned earlier, a fear that wasn’t even as difficult to solve as many other hydrophobia cases, so of course a Y teacher was able to fix it. Throughout that time, but particularly during middle school years, I tried multiple different little schemes (not adult-level schemes, kid-sized ones) to try to be a more successful kid (so yes, I do sympathize with Pa Ingalls, even as I recognize that it is far more problematic for him to do that than for kid me to because he had several people to look out for and I had zero). That’s another cryptid point - usually you see that kind of behavior pattern from grown men, not tween girls.
As an extra bonus, the special ed high school I went to let me into their college program the first year, one where you take college courses for credit, and I got an A in that course. Nevertheless, my school had set me up to fail that - they had a lady teacher sit next to me, one who was entitled as fuck. This teacher whined about her job to us, and also bragged at one point about how Tom Cruise called her and was polite to her. I mean, hello? Tom Cruise is a Scientologist, and assuming that teacher wasn’t lying, the only reason Tom Cruise would call some random teacher is to recruit her into Scientology. But of course, that teacher was so full of herself that she could not see that. This teacher also, when confronted, said “I have other kids to worry about”. Nevermind that I was the only student from that special ed program that she was sitting next to. She also allowed me to work on a project alone instead of in a group because of course I was going to take that option when they offered it (even though I am perfectly capable of working on group projects). But them allowing me that option was a setup.
That, combined with talking to myself and maybe poor grooming was what they used as an excuse to kick me out of that program. Though they never told me about poor grooming as a reason, and it was usually my parents they hid things from, so I’m not sure poor grooming was what they were primarily concerned with. Anyhoo, it seems as though talking to myself was enough to get me kicked out of that program in spite of getting an A, with the teachers literally laughing like bullies at my parents as they told my parents the news, and furthermore, they recommended me for VESID, which was really just recommending that I live in a sheltered workshop (which I would have shot myself in the foot in - I am a fast worker at certain tasks, and had my parents agreed to the sheltered workshop placement, I would have given the people my best performance, and ended up getting paid less than minimum wage, and worse, they would never let me go because they would be using me to pick up the slack for other workers and would find all sorts of excuses not to let me move on).
So the A alone may as well be a cryptid point. As is my using NYC public transportation all by myself - those fuckheads claimed I couldn’t travel independently, even though I had been using the subway all by my lonesome to get to the work experience programs I did the last year (in former years, I had gone to work experience stints on the bus). So, pathetic as it may seem, my ability to use the subway/bus all by my lonesome is another cryptid point.
I also get a few more cryptid points for currently studying animal behavior and cognition in grad school and working on a Master’s thesis (which I won’t talk about so, again, as not to dox myself). Let me explain.
First of all, in spite of being kicked out of that program, the high school let me graduate, and the way they described me was literally how intellectually disabled people are described. And, while intellectually disabled people are themselves severely underestimated, they certainly are not going to be in graduate school working on a Master’s thesis in animal behavior and cognition, because the scientific papers alone would be cognitively inaccessible to them - even the lay version of scientific papers might not be cognitively accessible to an intellectually disabled person. So, according to that logic, I should not even be where I am right now.
Furthermore, some of the top people at that school are ableist as fuck, and totally champion clicker training, both for animals (which is iffy in and of itself, especially as a general behavior training for highly social and compliant species like dogs) and for, you guessed it, autistic people. They totally support ABA “therapy” as well (and yes, they support electrically shocking kids as punishment and claim it is less cruel than either medicating or restraining kids who self-injure, which is bullshit and completely dances around the fact that kids at the Judge Rotenberg Center get shocked for minor things) and they totally gloss over some pretty alarming signs. They, of course, claim I am totally high-functioning with no issues whatsoever, so to them, the side of me that has meltdowns and occasionally self-injures is also a cryptid, since apparently autistic people who can get a Master’s degree can’t have meltdowns. Even though I do get those from time to time. So one more cryptid point for meltdowns.
This is a random list of talents and abilities I have (just those, if you don’t feel like reading a list of talents, you can always skip that part)
I can do a perfect kitty meow (seriously, you would think there is a cat in there if you were in the room when I did it). And I can also stim (god, I wish autocorrect would use that as an actual word) by rhythmically tossing a ball back and forth without looking, and I can also produce songs simply by clicking my tongue. Yes, that’s a thing, although I’ve never seen anyone else do it. Believe me or not if you wish, but I’m not about to dox myself by putting up a video, especially since I don’t want to be blacklisted as a result of smear campaigns by ableist researchers. Three cryptid points right there. Four if you count me teaching myself some sort of impromptu gymnastics move at one point (well below Olympic level - it wouldn’t even qualify for a low-level gymnastics competition)- I have no idea what the hell that move looks like or what to call it. I only know how it feels, so don’t ask.
Five cryptid points if you count the fact that on occasion the neuronal electricity from my hand jumps out and “pushes” a computer button before I even touch it - it’s not really a reliably controllable act, but it is a weird quirk I have, and that I share with my mom. The only reason that isn’t a problem is because it only seems to “push” a few types of buttons and coincides only with my hand approaching the button, never before that, which is how I know it’s nerve electricity and not a glitch. If you think that’s woo, don’t follow me - I never claimed to be able to teach anyone how to do that or to identify whether someone has that ability (unless they tell me and don't falsely claim to be able to control it only to show no such ability), and it’s not like I can sell that quirk for money, either. And I can’t control it anywhere near reliably enough to prove it scientifically, either, which is probably a big reason why abilities like that (along with telepathy, which I have only ever heard of in real life, mostly not from me but from others I know, as being a random, uncontrollable occurrence or else, as in one case, so laughably pathetic that pretty much any scientific test for telepathy will never detect said ability) were never officially found, so don’t hold your breath waiting for that kind of thing.
One more talent I have is this: after seeing Orlando Bloom as Legolas (I’m aroace, so I don’t have a crush on him and don’t get any ideas) do a catlike leap onto a rock, I tried that same move and got it right on the first try, even though I had read he found it difficult to do. But then again, he’s a foot taller than me, and he has an acquired disability from foolishly walking, sober, onto a thin piece of metal that could not support his weight, and falling three stories, so maybe it’s a cryptid point, maybe not, because being a foot shorter than the guy you see doing a catlike balance move would make it pretty easy to out-cat him any day. Especially since I would never make the kind of mistake he did, because from what I can gather, Orlando Bloom is a pretty cocksure guy (kind of like Legolas, really, personality wise - too bad they made him play what seemed to be an entirely different character than the one in the book who is probably more like Orlando Bloom than the Legolas Orlando Bloom played), and I am not cocksure. Obviously not literally, because I am cis female, and not metaphorically, either.

How retired NBA players are helping each other survive the coronavirus
Tumblr media
Spencer Haywood, Thurl Bailey, Dave Cowens are members of the National Basketball Retired Players Association.
Retired NBA players are more vulnerable to the coronavirus than active ones. Here’s what they’re doing about it.
Moments before the NBA suspended its season, Thurl Bailey was at Chesapeake Energy Arena preparing to call a game between the Utah Jazz and Oklahoma City Thunder that would never happen. It was a night like any other, until it wasn’t.
After Jazz all-star Rudy Gobert tested positive for coronavirus and the 18,000-plus person crowd was calmly instructed to exit the building, Bailey, who played in Utah for 10 seasons, was whisked off the court behind Jazz players and broadcast colleagues.
The 58-year-old recalls being led with about seven others into a lounge near the visitor’s locker room. There they sat, eyes glued to a television that was reporting their own surreal experience in real time. Jazz head coach Quin Snyder settled some of Bailey’s nerves when he walked in the room to brief everyone on the situation, as serious as it was. Eventually Bailey was led from that room to another, where medical professionals in protective gear, gloves, and facemasks collected his personal information so he could be tested for Covid-19.
A doctor braced him for the process by letting him know what to expect and how uncomfortable it might be, before a cotton swab was inserted into his nose and mouth. According to Bailey, it was painless and simple. Waiting for results was anything but. After they quarantined at the arena for over four hours, the Jazz spent the night in an Oklahoma City hotel. Bailey sat in his room, concern mounting as he thought about his wife and children.
“What if my test is positive?” he remembers. “Was I next to Rudy? How long was I next to him? Can you receive it if you’re on the same plane as people? All those things you start replaying in your mind.”
In the morning a Jazz employee called Bailey with good news: his results were negative. Soon after, the team flew back to Salt Lake City where they met with Angela Dunn, a state epidemiologist at Utah’s Department of Health. She went over different risk factors, explained the meaning of asymptomatic, and made strong suggestions on how they (and everyone around them) should act through the life-changing days and weeks and months that loomed ahead.
Before the season was suspended, Bailey’s daily responsibilities were not limited to his job as a broadcast analyst for the Jazz. Earlier this month, he was elected as a board of director for the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA), a 1,000-plus member organization that includes some of the sport’s most integral historic figures — former players from the NBA, WNBA, ABA, and Harlem Globetrotters.
“No one’s immune to [Covid-19], but it is a greater concern for our demographics, if you will,” Bailey says. “A lot of our players are the older generation,” Bailey said.
Right now, in the face of a crippling global pandemic, its members also represent an increasingly vulnerable and shaken segment of society that needs all the security, support, and accurate information they can find. The average member is 55 years old and over 200 of them are at least 70. All are impacted by the coronavirus, stressed over their own future, from a physical, emotional, and financial perspective.
In addition to Bailey — who previously served before he was termed out of the role due to appointment related rules — other recently elected directors include Shawn Marion, Sheryl Swoopes, and Dave Cowens. (Cowens helped found the association in 1992 with Oscar Robertson, Dave Bing, Archie Clark, and Dave DeBusschere.) Johnny Davis was named chairman of the board after spending 34 seasons as an NBA player and coach, while Jerome Williams and Grant Hill were elevated into different roles on the executive committee.
Normally, the association serves multiple functions. It’s a helping hand to members in search of new professional and/or educational opportunities. It reminds them of their own value as walking brand names, and encourages them to engage with the public in different ways. But unfortunately, our current timeline is anything but normal. The NBRPA has always expressed solicitude for its own, but right now its first, second, and third priority is to ensure the health and wellness of every member who feels susceptible.
“No one’s immune to [Covid-19], but it is a greater concern for our demographics, if you will,” Bailey says. “A lot of our players are the older generation.”
The NBRPA has been in front of the issue as best it can. All former players with at least three years service have healthcare coverage, while counseling services, scholarships, grants, and a rainy day fund for any members who are struggling to cope are in place. General awareness of these resources has been spread via email and phone calls, but this pandemic’s unpredictable scale will test mechanisms that have never been burdened by a threat this widespread and relentless.
Many members work part time and are unsure of how they’ll pay their next bill or make future house payments. Dozens have contacted the organization for assistance, which tells NBRPA President and CEO Scott Rochelle that many more may want to. “There’s probably another hundred who need to reach out or haven’t reached out but need the information,” he tells me. “So that’s guiding our efforts to date.”
Spencer Haywood, who just termed out after two straight three-year stints as the NBRPA’s chairman of the board, can’t stop thinking about his fellow members, former teammates, and friends who were suffering even before the globe was blanketed by coronavirus.
“I love them,” Haywood says. “Everybody just calls, ‘Hey can you help me with $300. I need $400, $500. I need this to make my rent. I need this to get food ... We don’t have a revenue stream. All of our guys have to work. They’re doing basketball camps. They’re traveling. They do groups. That’s how they make money ... We’re at the very beginning [of this pandemic], so I know our family, the NBA retired family, we’re gonna have some drama. I’m hoping that it’s not me. But who knows?”
Now 70 and living in Las Vegas, Haywood has done his best to stay as safe as he possibly can, stopping just short of hoarding Purell and essential groceries several weeks ago when his brother, who lives in France, first told him how deadly the virus can be. His four daughters teased him about being overly cautious, but now admit he was right to be so proactive.
Aside from his inability to resist two concerts at the House of Blues, put on by Arrested Development and Leslie Odom Jr. before everything shut down — “I couldn’t help myself!” Haywood laughs. “I went out against orders” — he’s replaced daily trips to the gym with morning yoga and five-mile walks at a nearby park.
While shuttered at home last Saturday afternoon, Haywood — a four-time NBA All-Star and ABA MVP as a 20-year-old rookie — let a few hours pass in front of ESPN’s panoramic Basketball: A Love Story documentary series, which featured his own 1971 Supreme Court case brought against the NBA that essentially allowed amateurs to bypass college and enter the NBA Draft straight out of high school. “I’m sitting there watching,” he laughs. “And I’m like ‘Damn. Pretty nice. I did some deep shit.”
As it rolled across his television, Hayward says a few friends who were also cooped up watching the same thing decided to call him: “They were like, ‘Man, I didn’t know you went through that kind of hell’. And I said ‘You were in the league!’ Man, oh man.”
But the pandemic has also emphasized a few general frustrations Haywood wants to air: “We wasted so much time in fake news and fake this, like shit, dude, if you didn’t want to be president, why did you run?”
He praises the donations made by current players to arena employees who, without NBA games, no longer have a job to do, and appreciates the players union’s unanimous vote that gave healthcare coverage to retired players back in 2016 “[NBPA President] Chris Paul has been a champion,” Haywood says. “I mean truly life saving.”
But in the midst of a broad crisis that will be felt by more former players than are currently under the NBRPA’s umbrella, Haywood also believes today’s stars should make additional contributions. “It’s a survival thing.” he says. “Think about the ones who built it for you. Who built this big conglomerate for you. I think they just don’t know. They never think about us.”
“The thing that bothers me so bad is they don’t know when it’s gonna end,” Cowens says, “Or is it?”
For the NBRPA, spring is typically a busy time of year, with college conference tournaments, the NCAA tournament, the McDonald’s All-American game, and Full Court Press, a nationwide youth clinic launched through the Jr. NBA. In the coming months, members lined up to earn between $250-500k in appearances alone. Instead, thanks to a wave of cancellations, revenue is at zero. There are still engagement opportunities being explored through NBA2K, Twitch, and social media, but the ramifications are undeniable.
Speaking appearances are another source of income for those who can leverage their name and life experience to travel across the country and meet with different people. That includes Haywood’s successor, Davis, the NBRPA’s newly elected chairman. The 64-year-old lives in Asheville, North Carolina, and normally spends his time giving talks at different colleges and universities in the area. He also sits on the foundation board at UNC-Asheville, where he’s heavily involved.
But with those opportunities no longer an option for the foreseeable future, Davis is instead staying put at his home up in the Blue Ridge mountains with his wife and son, where they’ve lived since 2009. “The warning bell has been sounded,” he tells me. “You can see the presence of what this virus has done. You can see it here in terms of how people are moving in their day to day lives. It’s different. It feels different.”
Davis is also spending some time acclimating to his new role with the NBRPA, going through the bylaws with Cowens, who lives in Maine for most of the year but has been down in Ft. Lauderdale since Jan. 10. Despite not having a full-time job, Cowens tries to keep himself busy. Last week he signed and mailed 800 basketball cards for Panini, the memorabilia company, that compensated him for the service. “It’s not a lot, but it’s enough to pay a few bills,” he says.
The Hall of Famer currently lives two blocks from the beach in a 19-story building, with 12 units on each floor. He’s neighborly, but most of the residents are on the older side, and over the past couple weeks everybody has kept to themselves.
Nights are spent out on his balcony, drinking an occasional glass of wine. When asked about the NBA deciding to suspend its season, Cowens says he would’ve liked to see at least one game played without any fans in the stands. The sound of squeaking shoes, shouting coaches, grunting players, and a natural silence that would otherwise be filled by the Jumbotron reminds him of old exhibition games that his Celtics used to play against the Knicks in upstate New York. Only 1,500 people were in the stands.
But there are more pressing matters on his mind. Now 71, Cowens is troubled by everything we don’t know about the coronavirus, how there’s no vaccine or direct word from the inflicted about how it made them actually feel. He worries about his wife. He checks up on old college buddies from Florida State, and recently phoned former Celtics teammate Don Chaney, who’s dealing with a heart condition and is likely at a higher risk than most.
“There’s so much uncertainty. If you’re feeling fine, but all of a sudden you start feeling sick, you then say ‘Am I gonna die from this?’ And so you don’t know. Young people don’t care because they’re already immune to everything in the world anyway. They’re gonna live forever. But they’re young, that’s how they think, and for the most part they’re in pretty good shape for dealing with this,” Cowens starts to chuckle. “So I don’t hang out at the clubs anymore. That’s not part of the schedule.”
No one interviewed for this story can compare such active worldwide disruption to anything they’ve witnessed or experienced firsthand. None can think of anything that comes close. It’s an unknown anxiety, like walking a plank while blindfolded from an unknown height. The future grows more murky by the day. “The thing that bothers me so bad is they don’t know when it’s gonna end,” Cowens says, “Or is it?”
He reminisces about his childhood in Newport, Kentucky. Cowens’ grandparents and aunt lived upstairs, in the same house as his parents and brother. His aunt would entertain with stories about getting to see Jim Thorpe (the only sports hero Cowens ever had) race with her own two eyes.
Cowens thinks about that time; how his grandfather lived to see his 60s despite serving in World War I and then enduring the Spanish Flu, which killed as many as 50 million people across the world. “People are going to survive,” Cowens says. That’s true. But the coronavirus will still crash into so many different lives, and so far the mortality rate for those it infects is substantially higher in seniors with underlying health issues.
Preparing for a disease that will infect and bankrupt thousands of people everyday was never in the NBRPA‘s sight line, and, frankly, it’d be a little silly if it was. Very few organizations in this country, if any, were prepared. But that hasn’t stopped them from doing whatever they can to steady the emotional wave so many are flailing through.
Right now, the organization’s primary motivation is to keep a bad situation from getting worse, and so far most retired players are doing whatever they can to limit the damage. Social distancing and self-quarantining are two examples of individual responsibility each person must take seriously. Most retired players are. The NBRPA can’t help those who won’t help themselves, but they can spread facts and manageable tactics that will save lives. The minefield of misinformation can in many ways be as dangerous as an errant cough.
Towards the end of his career, Bailey spent four seasons playing overseas. Three of them were in Italy, where he formed lifelong friendships. For the last five summers, he’s gone back to put on a basketball camp. Over the past couple weeks, Bailey has been texting with those who know firsthand what the coronavirus is capable of. They beg him to take it seriously. Given his position with the NBRPA, those around him are fortunate that he is.
“Our organization is staying on top of our members and their families to make sure they’re getting through it,” Bailey says. “It’s something that will always be etched in history. I was there. I was there the day the dominoes started to fall in Oklahoma City. In the sports world, anyway.”

up to the stars with you - chapter one
my new newsbians fic! read on ao3
"Kath had loved theater her whole life. When she was five years old, she all but told her father to sign her up for the Tiny Tots Theater program at the local community center, and ever since that class, she’s been hooked."
Katherine is a teen actor, and just got cast in her first professional show. Sarah, a writer for the school newspaper, is sent to write about the show. They meet, and are each instantly intrigued by the other.
“Alright everyone! Nice job! Take ten, then once more from the top!” the director, Joel, shouted.
“Thank you, ten!” came the chorus from stage. Nearly the whole cast sounded worn-out and exhausted (a heavy contrast to them just a minute before, during the run), but not Katherine Plumber. Her voice rang out over the rest, and if you listened only to her, you couldn’t tell that it was nearly ten at night on a Tuesday, that she’d been working for five hours after a full day of school, and that she was only 17 rather than a seasoned professional.
Kath had loved theater her whole life. When she was five years old, she all but told her father to sign her up for the Tiny Tots Theater program at the local community center, and ever since that class, she’s been hooked.
She’d stuck with it all through middle and high school, and now, fall of her senior year, she had finally made it. An actual part in an actual show. Kath thought she’d probably spontaneously combust because she was so excited.
None of her excitement had worn off over the month and a half of rehearsals, to the shock and slight amusement of her fellow cast members. And even now, the night before their first preview, she was still “as bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as can be,” according to her friend and co-actor Jack. He was just a few years older than her, and had quickly become one of her best friends, on and off stage.
“Hey, Plumber!” That was him now.
“What, Kelly?” She shouted back, although there was no reason for either of them to be shouting in the first place.
Jack sauntered over to her and slung an arm around her shoulders. “You ready for previews? I heard we got some big press comin’ to cover us!” On the words big press, Jack’s hands spread out in the air as if envisioning a glittering marquee in front of their faces.
Kath laughed a little at his antics. “Yeah, I think I’m good, Jack. What about you, huh? Can’t have our leading heartthrob be getting cold feet opening night, right?” She teased.
“Ha-ha, Plumber. No, but seriously: if you need anythin’, I’m always here for you, ‘kay?” Jack said, with all seriousness.
“Alright. Thank you.”
“No problem. Now go take your break, starcatcher!” He grinned, using a nickname that had been coined at the beginning of their friendship and came from their roles in the show.
“Just an apprentice!” She responded, as was their custom, mimicking their lines once again, before heading off to find her phone and waterbottle.

“Hey, Sarah, you good to cover that new show? We’ve got a kid in it, and Medda said we should send someone to write about it for the arts section, ‘cause we’ve got a connection and stuff, you know?” Crutchie asked, standing a few feet away from Sarah’s desk.
“Yeah, sure,” Sarah replied distractedly, trying to finish reading the last paragraph of the article she was editing. “Who did you say was in it?”
“I didn’t. It’s Katherine. Plumber? Do you know her?”
“Know of. She was in last year’s show here, right?” Sarah looked up. “Oh, hi, by the way.”
Crutchie smiled. “Hi to you, too. Yeah, that’s her. She’s in that new show about Peter Pan downtown, and it opens for previews tomorrow night. Medda got us two tickets, and I thought you could go and bring someone with you.”
“Oh, I think Jack’s in that. You know, Dave’s boyfriend? Ooh, maybe I’ll bring David. Thanks, Crutchie, and tell that to Medda, too.” Sarah finished making the last edit on that freshman’s article. She slammed her laptop shut in celebration before opening it again and closing it gently.
“No problem. Have a nice night, and say hi to Les for me!”
“Absolutely; he’ll love that. Get home safe,” Sarah said as she stood up from her seat and headed out the door, already thinking of the next night.
See, Sarah had loved theater since she was old enough to sit still in a seat by herself. Her and her family would have regular nights out at the local children’s theater, and she adored it so much that she begged and begged her mom to sign her up for the Tiny Tots theater program at the local community center. She did a few years of classes, but combined money problems, insecurities, and other emerging interests led her away from acting.
Instead, she turned to writing. At 17, Sarah Jacobs was the editor-in-chief of her school’s newspaper, and loved it. The teacher, Ms. Larkin, although she insisted her students call her Medda, was an incredible writer and mentor, and understood Sarah’s lingering passion for the performing arts, because she used to be a dancer.
Because of this, Medda let Sarah do all the writing she wanted for the arts section of the paper, and did her best to let her go to as many shows as possible. Sarah was eternally grateful.
“Hi, Ima,” Sarah kissed her mother on the cheek. “Is Davey home?”
“Yes, he’s upstairs. Family dinner tonight; Aba will be home by 7,” Mrs. Jacobs answered.
“Ok.” Sarah kicked off her shoes and started up the stairs. “Love you!” She called over her shoulder.
She knocked twice on her older brother’s door before letting herself in. “Hey, Dave, you know your boyfriend?”
“Yeah.” David didn’t look up from his computer.
“You know how he’s in a show right now?”
“Yeah.”
“A show that opens tomorrow and you don’t have any current plans to go see?”
“Yeah, Sarah! What’s your point?”
“I got two free tickets, wanna come?”
David looked up. “Wait, really?”
“Yes, really, dork. You free tomorrow at seven?”
“Yes! Thanks, Sarah! I owe you.”
“You’re not even going to ask how I got the tickets?” Sarah pouted.
“Fine, fine. How did you get the tickets?” Davey asked with an overly-fake voice as he pulled out his phone, likely to text Jack.
“Medda’s sending me, because Katherine Plumber’s in it.”
“Cool. Don’t you have stuff to do?” David asked, clearly as an attempt to get her out of his space.
“Ugh, fine.” Sarah flicked her brother’s head and left. “Love you.” She walked across the hall to her room, immediately opened her computer to Instagram, and searched “katherine plumber.”

MIAMIHERALD  —  Billie Kay interview; WWE NXT in Orlando, Miami, Fort Pierce
A subtle rivalry existed between Billie Kay and Peyton Royce as to who carried the banner ‘biggest WWE fan’ while growing up in Sydney, Australia.
“We went to the same high school,” Kay said. “I was three years ahead of her. Westfields Sports High, I was there for basketball, and she was there for dancing.
“We actually didn’t get along at first. We would see each other in line for all the shows WWE would do in Australia, all the signings they would do.
“One time Mickie James was signing near our hometown, and I remember Peyton being like four or five people in front of me in line, and I had been there about five hours at this point. So we used to have a little silent competition as to who was the biggest WWE fan.”
They eventually set aside their youthful egos, sharing a passion which led both to WWE NXT.
“[Peyton] joined PWA, and from the moment we actually spoke to each other there, we’ve been best friends ever since.”
PWA (Pro Wrestling Alliance) is the wrestling promotion in Sydney, Australia, where each got their start. Peyton in 2009 and Billie in 2007. They signed with WWE in 2015, assigned to the state-of-the-art WWE Performance Center in Orlando, where they learned the WWE way.
“Every single trainer at the Performance Center has their own style, their own uniqueness to this business,” Kay said. “I just love learning from each and every single one of them..I just want to continue to learn because there is decades and decades of knowledge in that building. So I want to make sure I’m taking full advantage of it.”
By doing that, Kay and Royce are two promising NXT superstars blazing a trail for others – fans and wrestlers alike, especially those in Australia – to be inspired by them.
It’s a process, leaving family and friends behind to pursue your dream in another country far, far across the long-stretched waterways.
“It was pretty hard,” she said. “I was very close to my family. They are my biggest supporters. They were so excited and grateful I got this opportunity with WWE.
“I still get homesick every now and then. It was a big thing. I had never left for another country before. I packed up everything that I owned in two suitcases and jumped on the plane..and 20, 24 hours later..I was in Orlando.
“I don’t regret anything, and I would absolutely do it all over again.”
Training in Sydney around 2007, Billie worked throughout Australia. It didn’t take her long to attract attention, and the athletic beauty began venturing to North America, wrestling for Combat Zone, NCW, Ring of Honor, Shimmer, and Shine.
Billie, 27, is friends with another Australian pro wrestling/sports entertainment talent.
“I am friends with Emma [now WWE Superstar Emmalina],” she said. “I was contacted through her as well as another mentor of mine, Jag, from Adelaide in Australia that WWE was having a tryout in Melbourne.
“I sent my stuff through, and I was fortunate enough to receive the OK to attend the tryout. It was three days, and it was before WWE had a live event in Melbourne. It was incredible, and then eight weeks later, I was fortunate enough to get an email, saying they were interested in signing me.
“That was one of the best days of my life,” she said with a smile. “I still remember screaming and crying and just jumping for joy with my family.“
How things change.
“The first person I told was Peyton Royce,” she chuckled. “As soon as I got the email I rang her, and I said WWE wants to hire me, and she said, ‘Me, too,’ and we just cried on the phone a good 15 minutes…and then said, ‘OK, it’s time to tell our families,’ and the rest is history.”
Part of that history is watching the maturation process of Kay and Royce in NXT. The hard work is paying off. They starred in a fatal fourway for the NXT women’s title against each other, champ Asuka and Nikki Cross at NXT TakeOver: San Antonio during Royal Rumble Weekend.
“It was overwhelming to say the least,” Kay said. “I had actually written out my 2017 goals a couple of weeks before that, and the first one was to wrestle for the NXT women’s championship on a TakeOver...and I was able to check that one off on the [bucket] list the first month of the year.
“And the fact that I was able to do it with Peyton Royce just made it a little more special.
“Going out there in front of almost 20,000 people is a feeling I want to continue to have over my career.”
Once part of the crowd, Kay is a longtime pro wrestling fan.
“I started watching wrestling when I was 10-years-old with my big brother [Jacob],” she said. “He sat me down in front of the TV to watch it, and ever since then I’ve been absolutely hooked.”
Now big brother is watching her on TV.
“It’s very surreal to him,” Kay noted. “We watched it all the time, growing up together, and we idolized the same wrestlers -- The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin. So for him to see me achieve my dream and to be here in NXT, it’s really special.”
Kay also excelled in basketball, beginning at age 5.
“I loved it,” she said. “I played in the ABA [Australian Basketball Association], which is kind of like college basketball [in America]. We won the state championship one year. It’s something I continue to miss.”
Though, following high school, at age 18, her mind was already made up.
“There were always opportunities to play basketball that would come about,” she said, “but I always knew deep down I wanted to be in WWE and NXT. So I never really put all my energy into basketball because I knew that being here in Orlando was my dream job, and I wanted to put 110-percent effort into that.”
Unfortunately, finding pro wrestling in Australia isn’t like the United States.
“It is a little bit harder [to do that in Australia],” she said. “There isn’t much wrestling in Australia as compared to America. So in that sense it was a little bit tougher to get into the business. Fortunately, one of my brother’s friends owned a wrestling school [PWA]. As soon as I finished high school, I joined up, and that was almost 10 years ago now...I just wrestled as much as I could around Australia and was fortunate enough to come to America a couple of times to wrestle.”
Now Kay is wrestling regularly in America, and she is striving to complete her list.

A: After I graduated from college, the first thing I did was get everything together, and got a resume together. I sent out as many tapes and resumes as humanly possible. I wanted to do hockey, it was my focal point. I started the hockey team at Kent State, because they did not have a hockey team… that is why I went there, I started it so I could appoint myself as the play-by-play announcer. That was the over-riding factor for me choosing that college. I had found out that the major teams had professional announcers within the area, so I said let me start my own team, and let me do what I just said I would do. They built an arena by my sophomore year, and I was off and running. I got our games on campus radio. As it turned out, to this day, Kent State has yet to put an NHL player out there, but fielded 3 NHL broadcasters. Mike Forns (Capitals), Rick Peckem (Whalers, and then for NBC), and myself. Went back home to Brooklyn, to the place I grew up in, and waited it out. I was fortunate, that within a short period of time, a month or so, I got a response from the Greensboro Generals of the Southern Hockey League. I went down there, and it was all set to go. Then, I got a phone call from the Cleveland Crusaders in the World Hockey Organization (ABA), Rebel League, raiding the NHL for top names. Picked up Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe… started Wayne Gretzky off. The team I had wanted in the first place, I hadn’t heard from them yet. There was a delay with them getting team together. It was near Kent State… Announced in AHL as a High-School senior. There was an announcer named Joe Tate (original voice of the Cavaliers)… he was a friend of mine through my brother Al.. He would moonlight as the announcer for Springfield Kings… they would hire other guys out. When the Kings would face the Barons he’d go… He’d miss a few games, and he called me up and said Steve can you do these games for me? I’ll be right there man! I turned pro while I was in college. Once drove through a Blizzard through Pennsylvania to do a game, in a borrowed car, in which the speedometer was broken. I didn’t know how fast I was going. The car belonged to Mike Fornes. He was throwing up in the backseat with the flu. I got to Hershey, about five minutes before face-off. Dove into the booth, and we had to do the game on a phone. Pay your dues. I was building a tape (WMAS sent me tapes)… Sent them out, and then… the Greensboro Generals brought me in, and we were ready to go… Cleveland called I told the Greensboro team (Carl Sheer, later became Nuggets president)... He said GO to Cleveland. They want me to announce on opening night, on a tape. I flew to Cleveland, I did the game, and the old arena, the broadcast positions were behind the goals. End-zone arena. Hard to call a game. Guys skating towards you so you cannot see their numbers. I did the game, went back to the hotel, next morning… Come on into the office. Nick Malletti, the owner, says, we’d like you to do the games. I had to go to North Carolina to tell Carl. Same exact thing happened to him, in an executive way. We became friends, and whenever I’d see him, he’d give me a big hug. He was a great guy. If not for people like that, you cannot succeed. I wound up being the voice of the Cleveland Crusaders, I joined TV shortly after. I announced for the NY Nets in the final year of the ABA. The passion was so deep, I’d go through a wall for anything.
. What was your fondest memory of being the Knicks ball boy in 1970?
A: The most iconic moment in NY Knicks history… when Willis Reed hobbled out onto the floor against the Lakers, when he had a bad hip. I was on the bench at that time. The shootings had happened at Kent State, and I was a sophomore. The campus dispersed, and everyone went home. The Knicks trainer, Danny Whelan, we became friends when I was ball boy in high school. I was in NY, and Danny asked me if I wanted to be an honorary ball boy for this game. It was like a Forrest Gump moment for me. Did all the work as a regular ball boy… When he hobbled out, looking to my left, the teams were warming up. I looked at the Lakers, Wilt, Jerry West, Gail Goodrich. They had all stopped to see Willis Reed coming up. I knew right there the game was over. They were taken out of their games. The crowd was the loudest I ever heard an arena. The roof was literally coming off. Willis, on one leg… took his first practice shot, and his went in. It got even louder. And louder. He took the jump ball, hit his first shot, and the place went delirious. Red Holtzman took him out, and he didn’t see another action. Walt Frazier lead them to victory, and they won the game. Lakers were demoralized and the Knicks won the championship. There I was. At the end of the game, Danny Whelan came over to me, and said, Steve, this is going to pandemonium. Gather up the warm-ups, and go around the edge and slip out, go into the locker room with everyone. We will never see it again. When they all ran in the locker room, I was the first. Bill Bradley, Walt Frazier, Phil Jackson, Willis Reed, Dick Barnett, the greatest Knick team.
. Having done full-time play-by-play for the Nets, Hornets, Warriors, Mets, Cavs, and Suns… what have you learned? Which team did you find you enjoyed the most?
A: I’ve been very fortunate to work with guys like Eddie Johnson, and Bill Raftery for 10-years with the Nets. He was a funny guy, a blast to be around. I would say the best memory was back in the mid-70’s. Last year of the ABA, when the Nets won the championship with Julius Erving. The one that is the farthest away time ways stands out the most in my memory, because as an announcer, you don’t get the opportunity to be a part of many championship scenarios. It was amazing to be a part of that. What a glorious way to go out, as the Nets were then infused to the NBA with three others teams. I stayed with the team upon the move. The Nets, Pacers, Spurs, Nuggets. Without question, that was the moment for me. When they won the ABA title. To be around Erving for a year… it felt like ten years that I was in that league, because of the memories that it instilled in me. It was a lot of fun. The other thing that stands out, wasn’t when I was doing play-by-play for a team. Doing morning radio on WABC Radio in New York. Even though I had to get up at 3:30 AM, it was the most fun I ever had. A very loyal early audience, drive-time radio in the morning is amazing. It’s the equivalent to prime-time night on television. This is when they make the most money in radio. They hope to put on the best people in the AM. I was slotted to do the morning sports, to do that with Allen Combs. Host/Stand-up comic. He taught me so much. Timing, comedy, it was awesome. The listeners were great. They loved you. It was complete love affair with the audience and the talent. They appreciated that you got up so early to entertain them. Then, I found that getting up so early was killing my body (Except for Howard Stern and Don Imus…. It can’t be done), $10 million gives you incentive. I had enough of the alarm clock at that hour, and that was a great thrill. I learned so much there.
. Being the voice of Showtime Boxing for 24 years… how did that opportunity first come about, and what were your biggest takeaways from that?
A: One of the great highlights, is we got to do several Mike Tyson fights. I would have to say the number one memory fight I ever did was: When he bit Evander Holyfield’s ear off. That was, at the time, the most watched sports pay-per-view event of all time: The record held for many years. Then, he bit him again, and was disqualified by Mills Lane. When it was over, I was so depressed. You didn’t know what the hell you said. It was crazy. I remember fighting through the crowd, hoards of people, to get back to my room. I was in a tuxedo, and I just lied down stared into the ceiling, and that’s it. It’s a savage, brutal sport. I wound up doing many sports, I kept going, and accepted this was part of the sport. Eventually, it was something I’d had enough of… the violent aspect. Somebody using cannibalism, as part of the sport. Without question, that is my biggest takeaway. Called some of the greatest fights in history. I called another fight, which to this day is being called the greatest fight today. Diego Carallas, vs Jose Luis Castillo… amazing comeback by Carallas. That was something. I’ll write a story on it someday. I’ve had a number of Forrest Gump Moments.

. I love the idea of the VP, Ann Meyers-Drysdale having a chance to call games with you guys. Who’s idea was that, and what’s it been like having her? Aside from Stephanie Ready in CHA, there aren’t any teams using women analysts, which is a shame.
A: She had been associated with the Mercury for a long time, and a living legend. In the Basketball HOF, and everybody here knows her. She lives in the Phoenix area for most of the year. She’s part of folklore. She was the first women to ever try out for an NBA team, the Indiana Pacers. She didn’t make it, but that will always be a trivia question. She was that good. A great star at UCLA. They knew her from the Mercury.. It’s worked out nicely. She is one of the all-time greats as a person, and she is a pleasure to be around, always smiling. She did a great job at the Rio Olympics this past summer, with Mark Zumoff, doing women’s games. They brought him in because it was NBC. That’s how that developed. She does seventeen games when Eddie couldn’t be there. Eddie is doing the Golden State game, then we come back to Phoenix. Earl Watson wants a practice at home… back on a plane Tuesday, and then fly to Denver for a game to resume the road trip, and take over for the final five. She’s been on for five years with me, and it’s a nice balance for me. Two completely different styles, and you have to be adaptable to adjust to somebody else’s style as a color commentator. They don’t have to adapt, but I do. You’re always learning, no matter how old you are, you have to adjust.
. Broadcasting for an 18-win Hornets and 17-win Nets team… how did you stay upbeat, and eager for each broadcast?
A: It’s called, announcing many years with the Nets. My last year with the Nets was ’89-’90, when they won 17 games. Was accustomed to losing seasons. I had good teams too, so I have no complaints. That last year was awful. We fast forward to New Orleans, and they won 18 games. It was kind of a mish and mosh of players. A collection of ragamuffins from different teams, and they just couldn’t get it together. Byron Scott was the coach, and they didn’t know what to do. David West hadn’t developed yet. The Birdman was on that team… I was working with a fun guy named Gil McGregor… not a great player (played for Cincinnati Royals); wonderful person, so from that standpoint the broadcasts were fun. Chris Andersen did some color with us. Injured players, had the chance to call games with us. His first tattoo was put on as a present from his mom. She was in a motorcycle group, and she was into the tattoos. A small town in Texas, and that is how it all started. We were just doing a game in New Orleans last week… talking about Buddy Hield, their top pick. One of the stories is, he has no tattoos. An anomaly in the NBA. Him standing next to Chris Andersen. It was a fun year. I got out of there, just in time. Would have been disastrous if I stated a few more months. I got out of there just in time. You’ll find this out too… it puts hair on your chest. It toughens you. When you’re with really bad teams… in 89’-’90 when the Nets won 17, I was offered the Warriors job. The Nets were in my blood, and it was difficult… that last year put it over the top. What would it be like to be with a solid team? I made the decision to go west. Don Nelson was the coach, and they had Run TMC. It wasn’t what it is today… but they won in the 40’s and 50’s every year, a solid, competitive team. Chris Webber. I found out what it was like. You knew you would be in the playoffs every year, and the crowds were amazing. I got a sample of it. I had a Stanley Cup ring from the Islanders. I got a little bit of a taste of it. Didn’t feel a big part of it, but it was great.
