coraline’s english accent is very VERY strong in this verse given her regular trips to england, when she speaks, there isn’t a hint of american except for certain twinges on words. sadly her family originate in portchester -  meaning while her main dialect is pompey, she travels around london a lot, so line between that and cockney is an unrecognizable blur to those with an untrained ear.  i know, boring and typical accent to have, heart breaking -

in chapters one and two ; coraline has the WORST alcohol tolerance on the planet . especially when it comes to strong stuff such as vodka, moonshine and heavy beers, the usual things you get with a life on the road. the only beverage she’s used to is champagne and wine in small bursts, a rough estimate is she can handle around 6 glasses in one night ; that’s her limit .  she’s never been allowed to drink much, only when hitting around nineteen did her parents allow her to start indulging . however, even when the family were out and she was on her own in the house, she liked having a clear head . it’s not a place she wants to get drunk in , she’s never seen the appeal in losing mind in an environment where that sort of thing can be used against her . however when running away, coraline ends up being more exposed to the sub culture that is drinking simply to pass the time. it’s a mess, but a funny one watching her slowly build her tolerance ; it takes a long time to boost her tolerance, but she eventually becomes a pro at it .

smoking is certainly a coping mechinism she over indulges in , a normalized activity in her household and was one her family oh so graciously allowed her to partake in . a chain smoker through and through, her idea of a good time is sitting out in the sun, with a book and a smoke in hand .

her archery talents is something she’s proud of, even when mastering guns, her bow is the first weapon she reaches for. the bow style is intricate, flower and vines decorating the wood, grip ensuring maximum efficiency and accuracy - certainly one of the most expensive items owned - she’s the type that when rested on back, will gently play with the string in idle, it’s a comfort motion that develops.

will talk out loud to her horse, anubis, no matter who is around - when something is going down and she’s happened to be stood by her horse, she’ll turn to him and just utter “can you believe this ?” if someone were to question it she’d “... i wasn’t talking to you” that’s her best friend, everyone is second to anubis. 

doesn’t swear for the longest time because its "unlady  like” the first time she does, she gets a rush out of it and realizes how much fun it is - she’d have a physical reaction to swearing for the first time, pausing mid sentence, eyes a little wide because ‘oh my god i said that ‘ - it all goes down hill from there, even though she doesn’t try to make too much of a habit out of it, it’s like fighting demons trying not to swear.

I finished Disco Elysium last night and have come to the conclusion that it is, ironically, about learning how to honor history while also letting it go.

Disco Elysium is set in a world drowning in history. You spend the whole time walking through a bombed-out city, exploring walls where people were lined up and shot, bunkers filled with propaganda, and monuments that were put up and torn down and put up again. The layers upon layers of history that you dig through in every encounter just overwhelms you.

Harry Du Bois is likewise drowning in his own personal history. When you start the game, you literally wake up in the 'ruins' of Harry's own personal country - the room he'd wrecked on his multi-day bender prior to starting the game. He clings to an outdated music style and an outdated celebrity that he models himself after. He worships his ex so much that his brain turns her into a god.

It's no surprise that the most joyful parts of the game are ones in which history is erased or made irrelevant. Harry's relationship with Kim, for example, has no history to it at all. While Kim knows that Harry is a self-destructive asshole, based on the aftermath of Harry's bender that he's able to witness, Kim also begins his relationship with Harry from a point where he's fundamentally a different person, who can and does make different choices than old Harry would havea. Every time Harry's past comes up, Kim is able to relate to him in a different and more positive way, simply because the old Harry and the new Harry are different people. Contrast this with Harry's interactions with his old partner Jean. Those interactions are really depressing, because they're so one-sided - Jean is left to shoulder all of the pain Harry caused to him, but when he tries to lash out, Harry doesn't understand. For example, when Jean tries to pull a mean prank by dressing up as the reporter Harry drove away, the joke goes completely over Harry's head, because Harry doesn't remember his past OR his old partner. Jean is stuck in a cycle of trauma and abuse that he's trying to perpetuate with his actions. Harry literally can't remember enough about himself to be a part of that anymore. That's why his relationship with Kim works so well in comparison - he can leave his past behind and become a better person who has healthier relationships.

Another place you see this quite well is in the storyline for the dance club at the church. The church itself reeks of history, and not in a good way. It's abandoned, worn-out, broken, and it has a giant stained-glass window of a woman who blanketed Elysium in terrible history and destroyed it, then convinced everyone that she was a saint. The history in that stained glass literally towers over you and forces you to cower beneath it. When you help the teens turn the church into a dance club, you disrupt all that. The power and sanctity of the church's history doesn't totally disappear, because the church is still there, but it fades into the background as it's overtaken by a new history. That new history extends to everyone present. It covers the teens, all of whom are either running from a bad past or leaving the people they were behind(you'll notice Disco Elysium has a lot of characters who have become different people than they used to be). It covers Harry, who has struggled to let go of the cool person he was in the days of disco, but ends up not just writing the new anodic music but busting a move to it. It covers Soona the programmer, who's trying to essentially come to terms with her history at Fortress Accident and move on from it. It's a really powerful image, to find the seed of the world's destruction in the church and to be concerned about that, but to then turn it into a bass track and dance to it joyfully anyway. Sure, the end of the world is coming. That kind of sucks. But in this joyful moment, who cares?

Look at Harry's former relationship with Dora. You spend all this time being triggered by things related to her, like chewing gum, the Dolores Dei references, and near the very end of the game finally have a dream where she turns into a god and leaves you. Harry is obviously an obsessive person. He obsesses about Dora and turns her into something larger than life, even though she tells him frankly that she's just a regular woman. Harry tries to cling to that history by getting her back. He gives her figurines that he remembered she would like. He tells her he's a better person and that they can make it work. He can try to kiss her. He can beg her not to go. She leaves anyway. Despite Harry's desperation, you can tell as the player that this is an unhealthy relationship, and that it's good that Dora left him. You can also see how her leaving triggered Harry's descent into brokenness, and how he never truly recovered from it because he couldn't let go. I don't think it's a coincidence that Harry only manages to face this history after he loses his memory. Some of that past had to be scraped away before he could face the truth and overcome it.

Finally, the reveal of the killer absolutely drives this point home. The whole game follows the traditional detective novel arc, where every detail is a Chekhov's gun leading to one big conclusion. The footprints, the eighth Hardie boy, the drugs, the smoker on the balcony, all of it. And the kicker is that it does all come together - but not in the way you want it to. Because most of the clues are smoke and mirrors. The killer is a sad old man you've never met before hiding on an island, clinging to (you guessed it!) the past. He's drowning in history and can't let go of it. If he feels totally irrelevant to the rest of the game, that's because he is. He doesn't matter! The world let go and moved on without him. The game strongly implies that it was this moving on, and not the old man's politics, that cause him to commit the murder. When he pulled the trigger, he wasn't really thinking about moralintern supremacy or being loyal to the communist revolution. He simply couldn't watch two people steeped in history choose to let it go and find happiness together in moving on. So he killed the merc in a fit of jealousy. Everything else you track down in the game is just people trying to mitigate the consequences of that murder by protecting each other.

History is important, and paying attention to it is how we learn from our mistakes. But what Disco Elysium doesn't want people to do is to get so obsessed with the past that we get stuck in it. You can't live in a bombed-out city or a trashed hotel room forever. You have to let it go.

You may ask, what about the pale, and the end of the world? To me, the game is literally manifesting existential dread as a parallel to the player's own understanding of our world and our limited existence. We know the world will end at some point. Elysium knows it literally - it's being slowly swallowed up bit by bit. We as the players know it metaphorically. We know that we get 100 years, give or take, to live. We know that the planet is slowly being destroyed. In a way, that's our history too. And so the game says to you, it doesn't matter. You should care, but don't get so caught up in caring that you forget to live. Ultimately it doesn't really matter that the world is ending. What matters is something smaller and more personal - that you care about the people around you, that you try to help where you can, and that you dance to anodic dance music while you have the chance.

Queen Rainbow’s Point of View

In a world where color was scarce... wonder was draining from people’s souls, and warmth was fading from their hearts. The warmth in their smiles were waning... And soon enough, they weren’t able to truly smile any longer.

This world... was called Monochrome.

Being the furthest planet in its solar system from the sun, Monochrome was already quite a lonely place. But everything froze over when Obsidian stepped to the throne.

Monochrome was a painfully boring place, filled with progressively more boring people. It got to the point where the most boring, bitter person of all would automatically be crowned as royalty.

Her name was Obsidian, and she became the Queen of Misery. She did not believe in fun, happiness, or love. Her heart was made of coal. When she breathed out, thick black smoke would fill the air, despite her never being a smoker.

Queen Obsidian’s very existence would always pollute the air with negativity and gloom that would make people lose hope. She was so boring, that her presence would transform sugary donuts into regular old bagels with nothing on them. She was so boring, that her royal fanfare was played on a single off-key kazoo. She was so utterly dull, that she even sent Planet Monochrome into a thousand-year-long ice age after telling one terrible joke.

But worse than all that combined, the Queen of Misery was a selfish, spiteful, and joyless person.

Nobody exactly knew why, but Queen Obsidian hated music... Possibly because of how positive and fun it could potentially be, not to mention the sheer raw emotion and vibes it could could convey.

One day, Queen Obsidian heard a song. It was awful. She hated it so much, that she ordered it to be sent to the Nowhere Of Permanent Erasure Void, or “NOPE Void” for short, where it would be deleted from our reality.

Queen Obsidian wanted to erase all the universe’s music from existence this way, and for people to never make or listen to it again. Ever.

Knowing that Monochrome barely had any worthwhile tunes to get rid of, Obsidian began to target the music on other worlds.

And what better place to start than the magical, colorful planet known as Whimsica?

Whimsica, a charming, fittingly whimsical world filled with magic... It may ideally be peaceful, yet we’ve been attacked by Monochrome for years just for being so idyllic. Apparently, our bright, rainbow colors that can be seen from space are an eyesore for them.

This is also where I come in.

My name is Queen Rainbow... and I’m the Queen of Whimsica. I’m only 16 years old, which is... actually pretty old for a monarch of Whimsica, believe it or not!

Whimsica’s monarchs are usually children nowadays! That’s because we have a childish kind of “whimsy” in our hearts and an arcane sort of innocence to see the world through rainbow-tinted lenses.

A long time in the past, Whimsica had a very strict older queen who forbid the royals, even the ones in the future, from ever befriending commoners.

That queen used a spell, so if a royal was caught being friends with a commoner, they would fall into a long slumber. The length of how long they would sleep corresponded to how strong the royal‘s bond was to the commoner.

Recently, the spell was broken, however! So now I can befriend and hang out with all the common folk I want. To be honest, being that kind of queen wasn’t so great, it was a little lonely, and I always hated feeling so unapproachable... and responsible!

Well, to tell the truth, the eldest of the three princess sisters actually does most of the work. 18-year-old Celestine is the responsible and proper eldest sister. Lunette, age 16, is the middle sister, and a bit mischievous. The youngest sister is 14-year-old Stelle, and she... well... is a bit of a problem child.

Anyway. I had proposed a new course of action against what Monochrome is trying to do. The princess sisters and I, along with Celestine’s best friend Nikamowin, and even the two royal anthromorph cats, Sparkle and Twinkle, have been using our magical powers the best we could to fight against Monochrome’s Queen and royal force, and the monsters they use against us.

But I still feel we need more help. We need the help of magical musicians.

I’ve been beginning to practice making music so I could harness its positive energy and make my songs into magic that can defeat Monochrome’s negativity. Nikamowin is also a skilled singer and can use songs to help us, but I still feel we need to power of more music.

So I assigned a job to Sparkle and Twinkle. Their job now is to look for passionate musicians with pure hearts, who are interested in joining our force to help save music for the entire universe...

Haku Yowane’s Point of View

Location: Earth

I zipped up my backpack to the faint scent of dust around the house, tied my shoes, wiped my long bangs from my eyes, and got ready to step out the door to go to school. Another gray day.

Even though I didn’t live with her, my world felt so empty now. My heart felt so hollow.

It was the little things.

Rain pattering on the roof... once a cozy and quaint sound... now just a gloomy and sad reminder.

An old notebook... once a source of joy and closeness... now just cold and distant.

A stuffed cat... warm and beloved... now even more well-loved, and irreplaceable.

All these things I saw right before I left my house to go to school reminded me of her.

My grandmother.

She passed away three weeks ago.

Right before I began opening my door, I looked back, and saw Snowbell, the plush cat Grandma gifted me long ago, eyeing me gently from my table.

I decided I couldn’t go to school without Snowbell. I couldn’t leave her alone.

I picked up the well-loved plush and hugged her gently and sadly, and made my way out the door with her.

Snowbell was special to me.

At the age of five, I was quite meek and lonely, with a reddish nose and wobbly knees. I would catch colds often, and constantly be sniffling, which was how I earned the nickname “Sniffles”.

I was a bit odd. I had strange habits such as pretending I were a cat, even lapping milk out of a bowl at snack time. I liked to draw pictures and play make-believe at recess. I didn’t like strangers or crowds.

In school, I was usually scared and overwhelmed. Once during indoor play time, I sat in my own little corner away from everyone and drew on the walls. When my teacher found the drawings I had drawn on the walls, I got scolded. I spent the rest of the day crying and sniffling, not understanding why I was yelled at.

That was when my grandmother decided my imagination was just too big for such a little girl, so she bought me a friend, a stuffed white kitten, to talk to.

My grandma told me that Snowbell was a special friend, and she was always there to listen. So when I was sad, I would hug and talk to Snowbell and felt I wasn’t alone.

Snowbell was there for me through the good days, and the many bad days... She was there when I graduated kindergarten. She was also there shortly after, when I was six years old, when my parents divorced...

Before my parents divorced, my brother Dell and I were very close. He was technically my half-brother. My father, who I was never close with, already divorced a former wife before marrying my mother. Dell was the son of my father and his former wife. His last name was Honne, his father’s last name. My last name is Yowane, my mother’s last name.

Dell and I would always play and sing together. Even though I was clumsy and fail at his games sometimes, he was very patient and would comfort me when I cried. Sometimes my dad would randomly yell at or scold me. When that happened, Dell would always stand up to my dad and protect me. Even when my parents were fighting and yelling so loudly that I got scared, Dell and I would hide together and he would comfort me. He was truly an amazing brother.

However, when my mother and father divorced, my father insisted on taking us with him. My mother refused to let him take us. There was a huge custody battle over us, and eventually, a heartbreaking compromise was made.

Dell was going to go with my father. I was going to stay with my mother.

I just wanted us to stay together. But in the end, we couldn’t.

One morning after sleeping in, I went downstairs to see around half the furniture in the house gone and my father outside in the moving van. My dad was about to leave. He left me without saying goodbye.

But Dell... He waited until I woke up so he could say goodbye before leaving. I cried with such intensity that he turned around. His face right then shocked me. He was seven years old... but had such a grown-up expression on his face... I had never seen such an look on his face before. So much pain... yet so accepting of his fate.

He hugged me one last time without any words, until I stopped crying. Once my tears stopped, he pat my head, and made his way out the door.

I never saw my brother, my best friend, ever again.

Two years passed. I turned eight years old. My mother, now single, talking to her sister, had an idea.

My mother’s sister had a daughter, who would be my cousin. My mom noticed that without Dell, I was very lonely lately. So she proposed to my cousin and I to meet.

My cousin’s name was Miku Hatsune. She was six years old at the time. The same age I was when my parents divorced. The first thing I noticed about Miku was how cheerful she was, and how accepting she was towards me. I quickly became friends with her, and even though she came over only around once a month and I only got to see her those times, we were really close friends.

The day we first met, we played in the backyard. I was still very shy and awkward at the time.

A butterfly landed on a flower nearby, and Miku urged me to try and touch it. I did, and the butterfly flew away.

I instantly burst into tears.

“Why?” I said, through my tears. “Why does everyone leave me? Like Dell? And my dad? Why...?”

“Don’t cry, Haku...” Miku pat my head to try to cheer me up. It reminded me of when Dell pat my head to say goodbye... it kind of calmed me down.

To cheer me up even more, Miku began singing me a song. She taught it to me, and I began to sing it with her.

We began to sing together, and soon enough, we were surrounded by butterflies. We began smiling and laughing. It was a great memory.

“Miku?” I looked at her fondly. “Promise me you won’t ever leave me, okay?”

“Okay!” Miku answered, smiling.

But one day, around three years later...

My mother called her sister as usual... and every single trace of her, her husband, Miku, and even Miku’s little sister Mizu, had vanished without a trace.

When I heard this, I was devastated. I began to wait a little while... but soon it became apparent that Miku and her family were gone... maybe in a freak accident or disappearance... and weren’t ever coming back.

I remember sitting under a tree, and just crying.

After that, I really only had my grandmother. My mom was always kind of distant and neglected me emotionally.

My grandmother, however, was warm and understanding. She was also very fun and always made me smile. She was the most magical person I ever knew, because she always told me amazing stories. Sometimes I wondered how she even thought of them. I always told her perhaps she should become a writer and make them into books.

I was inspired to become a writer myself because of her. I used many of her stories as inspiration, because I thought she needed a lot of recognition. She also always wanted to be a musician, and so did I, but I was always much too shy. My grandmother couldn’t pursue music because of her health condition and age, sadly.

Now that she’s passed, I think I will try to fulfill my grandmother’s dreams in homage to her.

Thinking of these memories may have left me sad... but I’ll at least always have the precious memories of these people in my heart, even though I may never see them again. In memory of them, may I live my every day to my fullest.

At a young age the woman took advantage of the young brunette and would often starve her and other times push her to murder whoever they captured. Whenever she asked about her parent’s whereabouts Natalie was isolated out of the camp for days. Natalie had believed that those days would come to an end when she didn’t get the blessing after all her parents were missing and no one gave a kid a blessing without their parents. That small hope that Natalie had been holding onto ended up coming crashing down on her when she turned seventeen, that was when her aunt requested that the blessing for her kids be placed on Natalie, after all, Natalie’s aunt wasn’t able to have kids so she was making damn certain that her legacy stood the test of time. Natalie believed that this was normal after all this was the only family she had ever known. The hunter did not want to appear to be selfish. Her aunt could’ve tossed her aside and not want anything to do with her. But instead, she took in the complication that was Natalie and fed and bed her. That was until she met an older male in her early college years. The two were never supposed to be a thing. Everything about their relationship screamed that it would end up in flames. He had been honest and told her what he was from the start as she was. Honestly had never been a downfall of theirs. Just ask quickly as she met him she trusted him. Both were aware of how fucked up each others family was but she brought him home. For the first time standing up against her aunt and defying her. Their relationship was the first time that she was actually able to breathe again but it would be short-lived compared to the pain that was soon to come. Her aunt guilt tripped Natalie on going on a hunting trip that Natalie still wasn’t prepare for, not to mention she had just had finals and was not at her best. The hunter almost died in the hands of a vampire, she should’ve died was what everyone said but out of nowhere, she came back. When she came back home, she came back to an empty house, her boyfriend was gone. Without a note or an explanation.

The break up was the second emotional pang that she wished she could erase. Half the time she had been worried that something had happened. Then the other half she wished something did happen to him. Days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months, soon she realized that she had to close that chapter of her life. She joined the police academy which ended up being allowed only if Natalie ended up staying with a family friend. A friend that her aunt had trusted would make her into the ruthless hunter that her parents had once been. It never managed to become a reality because the family friend ended up being more like a brother to Natalie than a friend of her aunt. It was not till Mikael, her nineteen-year-old childhood friend, managed to break down her door and plea to her to stop her aunt from killing his girlfriend that was a werewolf.

For a couple of days, the hunter was not going to do anything. After all, this was just the circle of life. This was a lesson that he had to learn in order to prevent any future pain. But after a bottle of tequila, she found herself thinking otherwise. That night she ended up turning against the hunters and protected Mikael’s girlfriend, which led to her becoming an enemy and being attacked. Natalie barely escaped the fight alive. She would’ve ended up dead if Mikael hadn’t called her ex into saving her. Which was an action that was going to change the course of Natalie’s life forever? At the same time her own family was going up in flames so was Lucas’s. One of his elders ended up confronting Natalie about her ex’s accident and things became violent when Natalie refused to answer anything which managed for Natalie to become physically violent with an elder. At the end of the day the entire apartment ended up being damaged and Natalie delivered the final stab to the witch. It was during that confrontation that she learned that her ex-had healed her that night that Mikael had called him. That the guy had moved on – it was the first time she had seen Jeremiah be so honest, and he confessed it was because he had also seen his own version play out the same. So after weeks of yelling at each other Natalie gave in and got married in private. For an entire day, Natalie and her ex-didn’t banter or become petty with each other. For one day Natalie wore a beautiful white gown. And it felt similar to the days when they had been each other’s best versions of each other.

For two years Natalie did the marriage thing. Natalie knew she couldn’t leave because of the enemies that she had managed to make outside. But every passing day that she didn’t hear from Mikael she worried more and more. Till the point where she couldn’t stay still anymore. Not like that was the only reason that she picked up her bags and left. Her husband’s family demanded too much from Natalie, things that she knew she would not be able to give. But as soon as Natalie was able to escape from her aunt she did. And ever since then she has been on the run, with the help of Zeke she has been able to be one step ahead of her aunt and both have been working to locate Mikael. Interesting turn of events since she would have never probably trusted Zeke before and now he is the one that she is the closest with. It was during this time that she dyed her hair blonde, as a symbol of change. During the past three years, Natalie wasn’t able to be a law enforcement because her aunt knew all the connections and how to get info so she with the help of her previous friends she became a hire for kill during the mornings and a hunter at night, traveling throughout the country and killing supernatural beasts. There were moments when she needed help and would call Zeke to come and help her out. With the three years, she managed to go from an adequate hunter to a specialist. It was during this time that she would help people deal with their supernatural troubles for the exchange of money and food. The woman that had once dreamed about a family got used to living in a studio apartment and living on a paycheck.

The woman excelled at her hunter skills. She put all her focused on her hunting cause if she was going to be hunted for killing, then she was going to kill as many as she could. Though the blonde managed to make it into her own job she started to just haunt those that hunted others for no reason. She never checked on Salem because she didn’t want to be reminded of the people that she had managed to hurt. Understanding causes and cures of addiction will indeed help addicts’ lives more than the best characterization could. But we should beware the false dichotomy. Determining “real facts about explanatory forces” is valuable, and so is characterizing “surface resemblances.”

Philosophers’ déformation professionnelle often inclines us to look for essential features of natural phenomena, leading to broad definitions that capture disparate phenomena. But, instead of characterizing addiction in general, why not separately characterize heroin addiction, gambling addiction, and so on? For that matter, why unify types of addiction by the object of the addiction? Is there just one characterization of all alcoholics? The partying alcoholic, the shameful alcoholic, the depressive alcoholic, the self-medicating alcoholic, and the bad-influences alcoholic have different etiologies and patterns of use. These differences are lost in speaking of ‘the alcoholic,’ and even more in speaking of ‘the addict.’

I want to keep three criticisms separate. (1) My characterization in particular may not be the right one; (2) no characterization of addiction may be correct; and (3) there may be no value even in looking for a characterization of addiction. My limited response to (1) and (2) is that my characterization captures the range of addicts, which is some evidence that it is a good characterization—although I doubt there is only one right characterization. This leaves (3), the question of whether any characterization of addiction is valuable.

First, however, does my characterization of addiction actually fit the range of cases? Graham suggests that my characterization may not capture willing, wanton, and resigned addicts. Benjamin R. Lewis, by contrast, doubts that my characterization captures the unwilling, akratic addict.

Graham rightly points out that willing, wanton, and resigned addicts do not fit our stereotypical views of addicts. They are not described by the still-common characterization of addiction as a ‘chronic relapsing disorder,’ nor by talk about addicts’ ‘struggles’ with their addictions. These addicts have no internal struggle over the addiction, do not try to quit, and therefore do not relapse. Call this group ‘no-conflict addicts’: addicts who are not struggling with or even opposed to their own addictions.

My characterization does much better with no-conflict addicts than most alternative characterizations. Consider a good alternative characterization: [End Page 49] the addict cannot quit, even if she (actually or counterfactually) wants to. We may quibble with this characterization, about whether an addict genuinely ‘cannot’ quit, but, regardless, this alternative does not capture the problem with no-conflict addicts. Their problem is that they do not want to, not that they cannot.

The larger problem with this alternative characterization, however, is that it also characterizes non-addictions, which one similarly ‘cannot’ quit. Smokers can more easily quit smoking than sleeping or eating, but that does not make eating a more serious addiction. So, although this alternative characterization is in fact a plausible description of many addictions, it is a description that does not distinguish addictions from passions and appetites.

My characterization makes this distinction explicitly, and thus better captures no-conflict addicts. An evaluative element and an element describing reinforcement are relevant, on my proposal, to characterizing addicts, including no-conflict addicts. These two elements exclude normal patterns of appetitive and passionate activity that otherwise resemble addictions, which helps to characterize the no-conflict addict in a way that distinguishes him from the non-addict.

Consider a hard case: how to distinguish the alcoholic who prefers bourbon from the bourbon connoisseur who drinks the same amount and would also steadfastly refuse to give up his passion, but who is not an alcoholic? The first element of my characterization helps here, because (I assume, arguendo) we will not say of the second person that his underlying motivation is misguided, that he ‘misvalues’ bourbon. Or, to the extent that he does misvalue bourbon, his misvaluation is reinforced differently from the alcoholic’s, as the second part of my characterization captures. An alcoholic’s motivation has some non-thinking, irrational (or ‘arational,’ anyway) element (what I call ‘impulsive’). Together, these elements distinguish addicts from those who make deliberate but misguided decisions. The bourbon connoisseur may drink way too much, but if every drink is chosen so that he can add an entry to his bourbon-tasting notes notebook, this is a passion. At worst, it is a worthless hobby. But that is not an addiction. Neither a pattern of bad decisions nor a pattern of unthinking actions is itself an addiction; both elements of the characterization, appropriately related, are necessary.

The distinction is murkier in actual cases. For example, the bourbon connoisseur is difficult to distinguish from the no-conflict, bourbon-loving alcoholic because the no-conflict alcoholic may rationalize her addictive actions. She may say that she wants to keep drinking so that she can fill her notebook with tasting notes on each and every bourbon, when really she is filling the notebook as an excuse to keep drinking. This is an important way in which an addict may be a no-conflict addict. Rationalization also sheds light on Lewis’s question about whether my characterization captures the akratic addict.

The akratic addict acts despite his judgment or valuation, suffering from a weakness of will (Holton 2009). My account emphasizes the role of impulsivity as a form of unthinking action that reinforces a misvaluation, and I believe that is the chief role of impulsivity in addiction. Although I do not want to rule out akrasia, I am skeptical that—as usually described—it characterizes much of addiction. It is nice (for us and for addicts) to imagine that they are struggling valiantly at every moment against an addiction that, itself, occasionally overcomes their (other) desires (Frankfurt 1988). That story may even be true for the newly abstinent, for whom every moment may be a struggle, and the story may remain therapeutically valuable for others. But, although addicts may not rush eagerly into their addictions, I doubt the story of constant struggle is quite right either.

More likely, the addict is not akratic in the way of constant struggle and occasional overpowering, but instead regularly experiences rationalizations and judgment shifts (Levy 2011; Yaffe 2013). Addicts do not typically just ‘find themselves’ acting addictively, despite all efforts to resist. Rather, they talk themselves into using: just tonight, only socially, I have proven that I can quit if I want to, and so on (Watson 2004). These addicts then look more like no-conflict addicts, but they were turned into no-conflict addicts by their addictions. Their lack of conflict is not exactly willing or unwilling, not resigned, but not clearly akratic either. I will not speculate (here) on what more to say about willingness and akrasia.

I do, however, want to say why we should care about giving any characterization of addiction at all. Does it matter whether Paul Erdös’s use of amphetamines was addictive, a decision to maintain his high level of work despite any consequences, or some rationalized combination of the two? What is so special about the word ‘addiction?’

Characterizations serve different purposes. Sometimes we want to know why something should be called a ‘disorder’ at all. Sometimes we want to capture a disorder’s etiology for the sake of research and prevention. Sometimes we want to direct treatment: naltrexone is not prescribed for procrastination but is for addiction, although addiction and procrastination are both patterns of action that prioritize short-term pleasures over long-term benefits. Treatment, research, and prevention should all be informed by knowing what the problem to be treated is, which requires characterizing the problem in a way that distinguishes it from others, although different characterizations may be useful for different distinctions.

My own characterization of addiction starts from a philosophical concern to distinguish the disorder of addiction from patterns of action that are not disordered—or are not disordered in the same way. This is motivated by some background concerns about when we are responsible, how we guide our own behavior, and what makes behavior irrational (Graham 2010; Shoemaker 2015). What is wrong with spending all of one’s money developing an extensive knowledge of bourbon is not the same as what’s wrong with spending all of one’s money on bourbon-centered alcoholism, even if both spend too much money on bourbon.

All true characterizations—for whatever purpose developed—should be compatible, and at best they illuminate each other. For example, my characterization highlights why addiction is not just a pattern of regular drug use. If we are not aware of this, we cannot have productive discussions about use of cognitive enhancers, painkillers, or even recreational drugs. My characterization alone will not settle when each of those patterns becomes an addiction. But without a good characterization of what is wrong with addiction, we are too easily swayed by the superficial features of addictions— like a difficulty in quitting—that addictions may share with non-addictions. We are then likely to count too much or too little as addictive, which ultimately may make a difference to treatment, research, and prevention. My characterization is only one of many good characterizations, but it does what philosophical reflection on mental disorders can do. It describes the clear cases in a way that helps us to think more clearly about both the easy and the hard cases, a small step toward dividing human action more finely than into just ‘rational’ and ‘irrational.’

She had a black buzz cut, the kind of body that gives the impression of lankiness even on someone petite, a complexion pale as milk, and an overbite that made sure that a sliver of teeth was always visible even when her bee-sting lips were mostly shut. Everything about her face seemed tentative, as if placed there by a designer who knew just how much any given feature needed before it gained enough prominence to overpower the others; hence her tiny nose, her light eyebrows and her gray eyes. When she first crossed the room, she struck me as so light on her feet that she might have been something drifting in the breeze; but it was the long line of her neck that made me look twice, the longest and most graceful neck I had ever seen on any woman, to that point. I’m a neck man. Some guys notice breasts first. Others are first taken by long shiny legs. I notice necks. I’ve always noticed necks, the most beautiful and most vulnerable attribute women have. I still asked her what had given her the idea to implant such a thing. She had some reason I forgot within minutes of her offering it—some deep appreciation of the artificial, some philosophical point about the fictions we all embrace while navigating modern life. It was background noise, just like the band’s set and the fruity flavor of the house specialty drink she recommended. Her name, some exotic spelling of a commonplace name for girls, was just a label. To me, she was always a mostly unremarkable girl who had brushed greatness with the implantation of a zipper, but had retreated from it with other lame attempts at individuality. To her, I was the guy who admired the zipper but seemed to have found other points of attraction. I didn’t like her much. I never did, though we were together for over a year, and most observers would have supposed that I was wild for her. In truth, I found her tiresome and vapid, a girl who had substituted style for substance. But I successfully hid that. It was the zipper that drew me. That night and over the next few weeks I discovered what little else there was to learn about her. She lived in a third-floor walk-up with stairways so narrow that it was hard to imagine how anybody had ever been able to move furniture into any of the shoebox apartments above. The hallways were dim places with octagonal white tiles the diameter of silver dollars, separated by grout that had gone black from decades of scuffed feet. The building was narrow, too, and there were no more than two apartments per floor, one unimpeded by the stairwell and one that assumed an eccentric L-shape to accommodate it. She had one of the L-shaped ones. I liked that. It was easy to imagine her just around the bend, minding her own business, not knowing I crouched in wait on the other side. She had artistic pretensions. She had written poetry and performed as lead singer in small bands. She had a voice that had turned to premature gravel, and she enjoyed the character it lent her. She was extraordinarily proud of the one gothic horror story she’d written that an anthology had published, but she was not driven to produce more. When I asked her if it was about zippers, she thought I was joking, and said yeah, right. Later, I read it, and it turned out to be nihilistic vampire shit, redeemed only slightly by her facility with poetic language. It was a story where nobody’s throat got cut, where the point was more the weight of the alienation her blood-sucking creation felt, and I read all of it waiting for the mood and the poetry to get out of the way so the bleeding could start. But nobody died. Nobody even bled. I didn’t see the point of that, but still complimented her as she seemed to expect, and at regular intervals during our time together asked her when she was going to write another story. She was a casual smoker, but she hated what the lingering smell of tobacco did to furniture, and so she never lit up at home, limiting herself to one a day, on the street. I liked to think of the way she would have exhaled if the zipper had opened up onto her windpipe, the fumes exiting her throat without ever rising as far as her lips. I liked to imagine her head, expressionless and unconnected from the breathing process, almost dead, floating atop a bed of smoke, like a vision. She had two tattoos, a bleeding barbed-wire band circling her right bicep and, showing more age, a tiny rose blossom at the base of her spine. I told her that if she was already bleeding on the arm she should add a long stem with bleeding thorns to the rose. She said maybe. It was not wise to return to such ideas too often; I had to pretend other interests. She owned a one-eyed cat. It had lost half its vision before she rescued it, in what was clearly some wound inflicted by a human being. It was uncommonly friendly to most people, especially considering what it had been through, but after a few sniffs it never came near me. I shrugged and said you could never tell with animals. It never would come near me, not even after the zippered girl and I moved in together. Maybe it knew I didn’t like its asymmetrical features, the way that single slit pupil regarded me with perfect comprehension. Much later on, after the zippered girl and I had lived together for a few weeks, I climbed down the fire escape one day I knew she wasn’t home, broke the window with a brick, ransacked the place, and took the cat so I could make it symmetrical again. The zippered girl had a regular job. I wondered aloud how she managed to hold one down, let alone in the dentist’s office where she served as a perky young receptionist, while sporting a zipper in her neck. She told me that it was easy to camouflage. When she wanted to, she could look quite conservative, a nice conventional girl who wore minimal make-up and had a mysterious love of neck-concealing scarves and high collars. She laughed that it was her boring disguise. I laughed and said, your secret identity, before you rip off the scarf and stand revealed as Zipper-Girl! I didn’t tell her that she was boring no matter how she was dressed, that nothing about her intrigued me except for the one delightful change she had made in herself. She had no way of knowing. I wasn’t interested in most people, and had long since perfected the art of seeming to participate in conversations while paying minimal attention to them. I was great at it. I gave her no way of knowing that she was only the medium for the zipper. When she lit candles and we made love, I was careful to pay obeisance to all the other stations of her personal cross, bringing pleasure to her breasts and her ass and both the northern and southern set of lips, but it was the zipper that kept me interested, the thought of it being a real portal instead of a fake one, the image of the tab pulled down and everything wet in her pulsing underneath. They honored me with an office anyway, and I spent hours in there with the door closed, using Photoshop on portraits of the girl with the zipper. I gave her more than just the one. I airbrushed out her eyes and put a pair of sealed zippers over each one. I did the same to her lips. Who needs lips? They’re imperfect sealants, and instruments for fricatives. The improved portrait became a sock-puppet, even more attractive in its artificiality and in its censorship of the personality the excised features could no longer express. I imagined her sitting in a chair, not tied there, but trapped there by blindness, waiting for me to unzip her mouth so she could eat. I imagined the one in her neck being an opening to her esophagus that I could use as the entry point for nutrients that would keep her alive but that she could not taste. Zippers gave me the option of controlling her very senses. In my fantasies, she made sounds of protest until I taught her to stop. Then I would return home to a Zipper-Girl who was to the images in that file what a paper airplane is to a fighter jet. I had to endure doing things with her. Clubbing was all right because the music was so loud I could pretend enough local deafness to abstain from conversation. Dining required more work, but I made myself the kind of man who spent more time listening than he did speaking. Going to museums was hellish, but I developed a particular interest in the paintings where the faces were caricatures, like the aftermath of terrible accidents where the bones had healed back in inhuman shapes. I became a fan of one artist who liked to obscure the eyes behind screens of concealing shadow. I told Zipper-Girl this was a representation of just how much human beings hide from one another. It wouldn’t do to be so mysterious and moody that she no longer wanted anything to do with me. One day when I was out and about without her I found a young girl’s hoodie abandoned at a bus stop. This was a warmer day than expected, and the owner must have taken it off to cool down, leaving it behind when the bus arrived. I wondered how long it had taken her to realize that she’d left it behind, if her parents had enough money to replace it or if when the cold weather came again she was left walking to and from school in hunched misery, hands stuck in dungaree pockets. It wouldn’t have been hard to find out, because I could have asked her. A tag bearing her name and address had been sewn to the base of the hood. I brought the garment home in a bag, hid it away, and the first time Zipper-Girl was not around used a pair of shears to amputate the zipper running from hem to collar. I zipped it open and zipped it closed. There was one section near the bottom where it tended to get stuck, surrendering to motion again only after ardent struggle. I thought of the girl needing to take it on and off, growing red-faced whenever she had to fight with it, perhaps even breathing heavily, in a battle consummated only when it once again gave her what she wanted. I imagined that the zipper knew that it was conquering her, that it made her its bitch with its recalcitrance. I imagined Zipper-Girl weeping because she had pulled the false promise in her neck halfway down only to have it stuck in place, refusing to either ascend or descend, its teeth forming an asymmetrical, vertical grimace. I put the zipper from the hoodie away where I could find it again whenever I wanted. I carried it around in a jacket pocket and fingered it, imagining that the two strips bounding the metal teeth were not material from a hoodie, but skin, taken from a breathing neck. The weather turned cold and she bought a distressed black leather jacket for herself. It had zippered pockets on the breasts, on the shoulders, and down the arms. There were pockets too small and too tight to house more than spare change. They were not meant to be open or closed, just to display their zippers. I banged her while she wore it and nothing else, paying all due attention to all the soft and unzipped parts of her anatomy. She asked me to use her name. I called her Zipper-Girl. She asked me to call her by her real name. I was able to arrange a glimpse of my own tattooed reminder, but knew that she’d noticed the hesitation. One night, as an experiment, she brought home a bondage hood. It was a full-face mask with zippers covering the mouth and eyes, with another zipper running down the back, to the neckline. She donned it just to demonstrate that it was too large for her, regardless of all available adjustments. She asked me to wear it. I had no choice. I had to say yes just to make it possible that she would someday wear one like it. I put it on and she drew it tight, sealing the one over my mouth, then zipping it back open, then sealing it again. In darkness, unable to see her face and therefore cut off from what she was thinking or feeling, I knew only that this had gone on far longer than I had expected. After a while she loosened the hood, removed it and left the apartment with it, returning two minutes later without it. It was just enough time to have taken it to the garbage chute. She didn’t talk to me again for the rest of the night. Sex became more and more infrequent. One night when angry she told me that sometimes she looked in my eyes and saw nothing behind them but an empty space, that it was like looking through a dirty window into a gutted building. She said that when she saw something moving in there, it wasn’t necessarily something she liked. I told her she was imagining things. On the stage of my imagination, she might have still had cause to tell me I was a sick piece of shit who she never wanted to see again, but I kept her from being able to make it stick. In my version, she never got watchful friends to stay with her and keep an eye on me while I gathered my few belongings and left. In my version, one male friend of hers didn’t say to me, tell the truth, you son of a bitch. You’re the one who took her cat, aren’t you? In my version, I denied it with persuasive shock instead of remaining silent and getting a chorus of angry voices replying that they fucking knew it all along. In my version of the story, I did not stay away for months, busying myself with other things, only to slip unseen into the back of a small concert being given by her latest band of the moment, and I did not see that while her ink had spread down both arms, the zipper was well and truly gone, not even a scar remaining. I did not see her kiss a guy in the audience, and I did not see her face light up, the way it never had at any point during the year she and her zipper had been with me. In my rewrite, she embraced the only special part of herself and had zippers installed everywhere imagination and medical reality rendered possible; one in her forehead that could be drawn open revealing skull, two on her cheeks that could be drawn aside to reveal teeth and gums, others on her arms and on her breasts and down her back and everywhere else she had never been bold enough to have zippers before. In my rewrite, we found a hood that fit her, and whenever she was at home and not dealing with my needs it was her duty to sit with her nasty face and her annoying personality packed away, while I spent hours and days toying with the feature we’d had enlarged to stretch all the way from her jaw line to her belly button. In my rewrite, she liked it, or knew that it didn’t matter whether she liked it. That, I know, would have been ideal. That would have been bliss. I leave her alone and write it off as a learning experience. This is the world I actually live in. It’s impossible to walk down the street, now, without looking for the zippers on the bodies of others. So far I haven’t seen any. It hasn’t caught on as a fad. But sooner or later I’ll find someone who knows that the zipper is the only important thing; or one sufficiently eager to please, or fool, into changing herself in any way I demand. It’s only a matter of time. In the meantime, getting ready, I’m taking classes in tailoring.

Electronic Cigarette Maker Juul Gets Raided

Electronic cigarettes go by several different names. While the most common name has been e-cigarettes, the brand name Juul not only has taken over the market, but also has become a commonly used verb.1 E-cigarettes or vaping devices heat a liquid solution to a temperature high enough it produces vapor.

The liquid typically contains nicotine and a variety of different flavors. Although some of the flavors have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for oral consumption, they have not been for inhalation.2 The lack of approval is based on a lack of research into the safety of the compounds once they reach your lung tissue.

The design of the product may resemble a regular cigarette, cigar, pen or a USB flash drive. The most recent designs have a sleek, high-tech appearance and are easily recharged, sometimes on your computer. The most recent device, Juul, appeared in 2016 and has been the leading e-cigarette product since early 2018.

As you might expect, other companies wanting to take advantage of this meteoric rise in popularity have created similar products to follow Juul's high-tech look and high nicotine delivery.3 However, while skyrocketing sales have been financially profitable for the company, it may come at the price of health.

Government Agency Seized Thousands of Document Pages During Surprise Inspection

Across the country, parents and regulators have been wrestling with the growing problem of teenage e-cigarette use. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey went public with her concerns that teenagers are the target of Juul e-cigarette advertising and focused her investigation on whether the California-based company adequately monitors its website to prevent minors from accessing products.4

The FDA launched what they called the5 "largest coordinated enforcement effort in FDA's history" against 1,300 retailers who illegally sold Juul and other e-cigarette products. They announced they intend to hold retailers accountable for continued violations and will take steps to work with manufacturers directly to hold them accountable as well.

An official request for information was sent directly to Juul Labs regarding their product marketing, research on the health, toxicological, behavioral or physiological effects of the products, and youth-related adverse events.6

Weeks after the FDA requested manufacturers submit plans on how they will reduce use of their products in young people, the agency conducted a surprise inspection of Juul's corporate headquarters, seizing thousands of documents, many related to sales and marketing practices.

The FDA stated it was part of their7 "ongoing efforts to prevent youth use of tobacco products, particularly e-cigarettes." FDA spokesperson Michael Felberbaum wrote in an email to CNN:8

"The new and highly disturbing data we have on youth use demonstrates plainly that e-cigarettes are creating an epidemic of regular nicotine use among teens. It is vital that we take action to understand and address the particular appeal of, and ease of access to, these products among kids."

Despite Advertising and Youth-Based Flavors, Juul Claims They Don't Target Teens

The FDA also is considering banning several flavored liquids9 as they make it easier for teens to get hooked on nicotine. Flavors Hook Kids10 describes the process as masking the taste of any harsh chemicals and tobacco. Flavors also have an emotional link, which is triggering the development of a terrifyingly high number of flavors.

While Juul has a limited number of flavors available in their vape products, there are over 15,000 tobacco and vape flavors available, customized to pique the curiosity of teens and adults. Juul Labs made a statement following the FDA seizure, saying it was:11

"... committed to preventing underage use and we want to engage with FDA, lawmakers, public health advocates and others to keep Juul out of the hands of young people."

Research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found advertising aimed at youth for e-cigarettes continue to increase in retail stores, on the internet and in television advertising.12

Interestingly, some full-page advertising run in newspapers contains one of the oldest reverse psychology devices in the tobacco industry's playbook — advertising warning the product contains an addictive chemical and is for adult smokers only.13

According to preliminary data from the CDC annual National Youth Tobacco Survey, the number of students who have used e-cigarettes in the last 30 days rose by 75 percent since their last report in 2016. This means nearly 20 percent of high school students are using e-cigarettes today, as compared to 11.7 percent from their last survey.14

In a survey from Truth Initiative, a nonprofit tobacco control organization, researchers found 63 percent of teens using the product did not know it contained nicotine.15

The New Nicotine Is a Chemical Disaster in the Making

Juul represents their product as the16 "most genuine alternative to smoking cigarettes." Statements also appear to support the switch to vapor and not quitting completely when they say, "adult smokers interested in switching from cigarettes should be offered high-quality alternatives that satisfy them because satisfaction is a key component to supporting their switch to vapor."

These goals resulted in the production of patented JuulSalts delivering a nicotine hit much more like smoking a cigarette than any other e-cigarette product.17 The breakthrough occurred when Juul began using benzoic acid to freebase nicotine salts for rapid nicotine delivery.

Since the 1960s, cigarette companies have freebased nicotine using ammonia, which can be very irritating to the chest and lungs. However freebased nicotine from JuulSalts are not as irritating and are readily absorbed into the lungs and brain.

Juul has one of the highest nicotine content of any e-cigarette sold in the U.S.18 As one addiction expert explained,19 "The modern cigarette does to nicotine what crack does to cocaine."

Juul Has Over 50 Percent of the E-Cigarette Market Share

A combination of the high-tech sleek design and increased nicotine hit with high addiction rate has resulted in a meteoric rise in sales. According to Nielsen data, just two years after the launch of the company, Juul garnered more than half of the e-cigarette retail market sales in the U.S.20 

As there are hundreds of other devices available to consumers, this market share is staggering. According to Meg Kenny, assistant head of school at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, Vermont,21 "Ninety-five percent of the disciplinary infractions we deal with in the fall and continue to deal with into the spring are all connected to the Juul." Corinne Graffunder, director of the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health, said:22

"There are no redeeming benefits of e-cigarettes for young people. The use of certain USB-shaped e-cigarettes is especially dangerous among youth because these products contain extremely high levels of nicotine, which can harm the developing adolescent brain."

Early Nicotine Use Increases Risk of Addictive Behavior Throughout Life

The 2016 Surgeon General's report23 showed a 900 percent increase in use of e-cigarettes between 2011 and 2015. Several studies have supported the hypothesis e-cigarettes are a gateway habit, leading teens from vaping to smoking traditional combustible cigarettes, hookah and cigars.24,25,26

In other studies using animal models, researchers discovered rats exposed to nicotine during adolescence grew into adulthood with a greater potential to exhibit addictive behavior.27 Exposure to nicotine during adolescence results in long-term changes in the midbrain reward center that may also be a gateway to other addictive drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and morphine.28

Nicotine administration during adulthood in animal models did not alter the function of the inhibitory midbrain circuitry in the same way it did with exposure during adolescence.29 Vapor from e-cigarettes also contains acetaldehyde and formaldehyde, and the FDA has detected antifreeze chemicals linked to cancer in e-cigarettes.30

Despite lower levels of nicotine pollution from e-cigarettes, researchers have found bystanders have similar levels of cotinine, a measure of the amount of nicotine taken into the body, as those who are exposed to traditional combustible secondhand cigarette smoke.31

A Growing Market for Illegal Sales

As Juul attempts to protect sales of their products from the website to underage consumers, a black market business has grown in the teen population. According to a high school sophomore from Houston,32 if you deal the e-cigarettes you can make a lot of money.

She described the types of dealers in her school, some of whom sold pods or devices, or who would bootleg refills if you wanted a different flavor or THC oil. Another student reported:33

"Dealers will announce on Snapchat that they've bought a hundred of them, and they'll write the price, the date and the meeting place for kids to show up with cash."

One college student argues the Juul represents his generation's "tech-savvy ingenuity when it comes to making bad decisions." He described his experience when he first tried Juul in 2016, saying:34

"Someone pulls one out at a party, and naturally the question is 'Can I try it?,' and then after 'Can I try it?' five or six times you end up buying your own, and, soon enough, you're breathing in more Juul than air."

Dr. Jonathan Winickoff, former chair of the American Academy of Pediatric Tobacco Consortium, trying to end youth smoking, commented:35

"Let's be clear. Juul is already a massive public health disaster — and without dramatic action it's going to get much, much, much worse. If you were to design your ideal nicotine-delivery device to addict large numbers of United States kids, you'd invent Juul.

It's absolutely unconscionable. The earlier these companies introduce the product to the developing brain, the better the chance they have a lifelong user."

Juul Complains Copycat Products Cut Into Profit Margins

Despite garnering over 50 percent of the market, Juul Labs has filed a patent infringement complaint in the U.S. and Europe against what they believe are copycat products.36 Their complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) named 18 companies, many of them based in the U.S. or China, claiming development and sale of products based on Juul's patented technology.

They request the ITC prevent the products' importation and sale into the U.S. The copycats are basing their marketing strategy on the sale of lower-priced products.

Juul products have become a ubiquitous presence in high schools in America in more affluent ZIP codes. In recent decades, the same areas have seen a decline in smoking combustible cigarettes. In part, this may be attributed to price. The Juul retails for $34.99 and a four-pack of pods cost $15.99 (or about $4 a pod).37 Combustible cigarettes, on the other hand, range from over $5 a pack in Missouri and Virginia to nearly $13 a pack in New York.38

While Juul's complaint against copycat products focuses on its desire to "protect consumers and prevent underage use," it is more likely driven by the company's perceived loss of market share. Kevin Burns, Juul's chief executive officer, stated:39 "The rapid proliferation of products infringing on our intellectual property continues to increase as our market share grows."

Whatever the Delivery Method, Nicotine Is Addictive

While most advocates of e-cigarettes claim they are best used to help smokers quit, the delivery of nicotine is always addictive. Studies have demonstrated the health dangers with nicotine maybe slightly different in e-cigarettes, but are no less dangerous than smoking combustible tobacco.

Nicotine is one of the oldest botanical insecticides40 and a powerful poison linked to a number of different health conditions.41 Evidence suggests nicotine adversely affects your cardiovascular, respiratory, renal and reproductive systems.42

Damage to your heart and vascular cells triggers an inflammatory response that may lead to atherosclerosis and promotes tumors by affecting cell proliferation, increasing resistance to chemotherapeutic agents.

I believe the "secret" to quitting smoking is to get healthy first, making quitting mentally and physically easier. Exercise is an important part of this plan, as research shows people who engage in regular strength training double their success rate at quitting smoking compared to those who don't exercise. Healthy eating is another crucial factor to improve your health and strengthen your ability to quit.

Hello Thank you for entering in my post I've been with Admiral insurance for more than 1 year, which is my 1st car insurance since I've been in England I've been driving for more than 12 years and I've never made a claim before it was a normal and clear day and i was going to work when I had an accident with a girl riding a moped It was a very silly accident, fortunatelly none was injured, and I only had a broken wind-mirrow, which is no more than 50 of damage I had to call Admiral, my insurer, to sort the problem out, I had no other choice Admiral told me I was not covered to go to work since on the policy agreement says: use for social, domestic and pleasure purposes only. And, according to them, to be covered, my policy had to be: use for social and COMMUNITY. So Community for them means, going to work, it is ridiculas but that's what i was told However they said we cover you, you will have to pay 23.74 extra and you will be covered, it was frustrating, a theft, but I let it go... The absurd story didn't even start yet! I gave Admiral all the details which the police had given to me the day of the accident plus some pictures of the scene, which I took before to leave that day Admiral sent an inspector who interwied me at my house. This inspector wrote a statement of 6 PAGES! about my accident, however, I need to say, he did a very good job On the statement states that none was injured and the fault lies with the moped rider, which is also what the police said on the scene. In addtion this inspector suggested to call my insurer again to finally get my car fixed. Admiral told me I will have to pay for the damage myself and, after all their investigation, if they find out it was not my fault, I can ask e refund for the damage, and they added that this investigation can take up to 3 years, so I will have my money back in 3 years! this is because according to them, the moper rider was injured This is absolutely incredible What would you suggest? One year ago my wife was taking our daughter to pre-school turning left out the end of our road in to traffic, this road has a speed limit of 35 mph. Traffic had to stop to let her cross the first lane since it was solid cars, vans and small trucks. As she approached half-way, before getting a good view of oncoming traffic, another car took off the front bumper. Note that the center line is interuppted at the cross-junction. The bumper was torn from the front of the car with damage more evident on the non-impact side of the car than where initially hit, hence my wife had not initiated a turn, just edging forward to see. The radiator was in-tact, but damaged, still mounted to the front of the car. I walked to the site with our other child and took my daughter home; she is fine and I took her to school but still talks of the incident today. My wife stayed at the incident, and was fine (no later issues) keeping real calm and cooperating with police. It took about 2 hrs with police debating which town the incident took place (middle of the road is the divide) and the other driver was concerned about getting home to take a pot off the stove, but seemed medically fine. The driver asked me and the police to drive them home to get the pot off the stove and used my wifes cell phone more than once. They also wanted to drive their car home and leave the scene with a flat tire at one point I presume to attend to the pot. No tickets were issued, no air bags deployed. The other car had a flat front left tire and side damage so the drivers door was stuck shut. Both cars were old, so written off. Over a year later we received a court summons from their attorney and we are being sued for $750,000. Our limit is $100,000 on insurance. The plaintiff is claiming herniated discs and loss of bowel control. We have a 2006 no money down mortgage, so total equity is very much in the red since our home value plummeted. I have no umbrella policy. I am sole income, but was owner of the car my wife was driving. My wife is stay-at-home mom. The remaining $650,000 would be a big problem. Interestingly, we heard that the other driver called our insurance and asked for a >100-fold lower amount of money to just go away! Our insurer recalls this very clearly and did not pay. Questions: Should I invest in an attorney to work with our insurers attorney to cover the $650K over our limit? Do we have any case given the car the other driver may have been in a rush (as all were aware of the pot on the stove), would have settled for far less, and in reported safety tests should avoid an obstacle at 55mph let alone at the speed limit of 35 mph? Their case, as I understand, is to actually prove my wife was negligent, she was just trying to see. Reality and the law are complicated I understand. Our insurer is looking in to the validity of their medical claims. I believe for spinal and neck injuries plaintiffs have to follow careful insurance approved treatment plans in NJ. I know that such a condition may not be permanent with curative surgery possible to release the nerves that may be causing the bowel issue. The plaintiff has claimed the injury as permanent, do they need to prove this? Should we ask experts? The plaintiff lives in our town and their house is on my running route every other day. CDC Director Resigns Following Public Exposure of Tobacco Investments Dr. Mercola By Dr. Mercola In 2016, evidence emerged showing Barbara Bowman, Ph.D., then-director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention, assisted a Coca-Cola representative in efforts to influence World Health Organization officials to relax recommendations on sugar limits.1 Just two days after her betrayal of the public trust was exposed, Bowman vacated her post.2 Dr. Brenda Fitzgerald took her place, but it didn’t take long before we learned the newly instated CDC director also had a long history of collaborating with Coca-Cola. 3,4 During her six-year stint as commissioner of Georgia’s department of public health, Fitzgerald received $1 million5 in funding from the company to combat childhood obesity. At the time of her appointment to CDC director, Jim O’Hara, director of health promotion policy at the Center for Science in the Public Interest stated,6 “We hope Dr. Fitzgerald, as head of CDC, avoids partnering with Coke on obesity for the same reason she would avoid partnering with the tobacco industry on lung cancer prevention.” In a twist of irony, Politico7 recently exposed Fitzgerald’s tobacco investments, which led to her handing in her resignation a day later. Spokesman Matt Lloyd issued a public statement saying, “Fitzgerald owns certain complex financial interests that have imposed a broad recusal limiting her ability to complete all of her duties as the CDC director.” Sen. Patty Murray, D-Washington, commented on the situation, saying, “It is unacceptable that the person responsible for leading our nation’s public health efforts has, for months, been unable to fully engage in the critical work she was appointed to do.” Flagrant Conflicts of Interest at the CDC Are there truly no qualified individuals who do not have deep ties to industry available to fill the highest posts within the CDC? Is seems rather remarkable that two CDC directors in a row have been caught maintaining such obvious conflicts of interest. The discovery of Fitzgerald’s investments in a Japanese tobacco company was made possible by the 2012 law introduced by Rep. Louise Slaughter, D-New York, which prohibits insider trading by government employees. The law requires full disclosure of financial trades made by government employees, including Congressional members, and this is how Politico discovered Fitzgerald’s purchase of tobacco stocks. In a statement, Slaughter said, “This episode is exactly why I wrote this law … The American people deserve to know whether federal officials are upholding the public trust and adhering to the highest ethical standards, or using their powerful positions to enrich themselves.” In this case, Fitzgerald reportedly owned stocks in no less than five different tobacco companies, plus drug companies, when she was appointed CDC director. As part of her ethics agreement, she sold those stocks when accepting her new position. But then, mere months into the job, she went and bought stocks in Japan Tobacco International (JTI), one of the largest tobacco companies in the world. She also bought stocks in a dozen other health-related companies, including Merck, Bayer, Humana and U.S. Foods Holding Corp. She’s also been criticized for being slow to sell off other, earlier investments that were preventing her from fulfilling her professional duties. As reported by Politico, she was unable to provide Congressional testimony on at least three separate occasions due to financial conflicts of interest.8 Two of those hearings involved cancer detection and the opioid epidemic. It’s really hard to imagine someone can reach this level of power and be so clueless about ethics. Smoking is a leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., so clearly, investing in a tobacco company is going to be at odds with your professional duty as the leader of the CDC. Just last November Fitzpatrick issued a CDC statement reinforcing the agency’s determination to “continue to use proven strategies to help smokers quit and to prevent children from using any tobacco products.”9 Vaping Technology — Hardly a Viable Smoking Cessation Tool Interestingly, JTI’s emerging product line is primarily focused on vaping products,10,11 which are increasingly being marketed as tools to quit smoking regular cigarettes. One wonders whether this might have influenced Fitzpatrick’s decision to invest in this company. Such ponderings are entirely speculative of course, but the fact remains that while marketed as a smoking cessation tool, emerging evidence suggests vaping and electronic cigarettes are just as harmful, if not more harmful, than regular cigarettes. Just last year, the CDC warned that e-cigarette use among children is a growing health concern. At present, e-cigarettes are the most commonly used form of tobacco by American youth and young adults. A significant draw for youngsters is the fact that vaping pens and e-cigarettes can be used to smoke all sorts of flavored concoctions, from bubble gum and watermelon to chocolate. So, for Fitzgerald to state a public oath to fight use of tobacco products among children, and then purchase stocks in a company whose chief new product line is focused on kid-friendly vaping technology seems insincere at best. At worst, her connection with JTI might eventually have led to her downplaying harms of vaping, or worse, endorsing its use as a smoking cessation tool based on flawed or biased science by the industry. Again, this is all speculation, and since Fitzpatrick has stepped down, the point is moot anyway. I’m speculating merely to draw attention to the very real dangers these kinds of conflicts of interest can create. Tobacco Industry Invented Fake News As noted in a recent STAT news article, product defense reporting is an old “fake news” tactic perfected by the tobacco industry decades ago, and while the tobacco industry no longer tries to defend cigarette smoking, you can see the same whitewash tactics being used to promote vaping as a safe alternative. Writer and former investigator for the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, Paul D. Thacker, describes how the tobacco industry invented and mastered the use of fake news to postpone the industry’s ultimate demise:12 “I fell into this world back in 2005, while working as an editor for the news section of Environmental Science & Technology … After … digging through the tobacco archive, I wrote a story about Steven J. Milloy, a columnist for FoxNews.com who ran a website called JunkScience.com and headed a shady organization called The Advancement of Sound Science Coalition (TASSC). In a 1993 letter, the public relations firm APCO explained how it launched TASSC ‘to expand and assist Philip Morris in its efforts with issues in targeted states in 1994’ … My reporting led me to a fleet of industry-friendly scientists and writers who had the habit of pooh-poohing the potential dangers of products, dismissing studies finding possible harm, and attacking the FDA … Financial ties between tobacco and pharmaceutical companies weakened smoking cessation efforts, and the tobacco companies often sought to obscure their role in media campaigns by partnering with other industries to attack government regulation and independent research … In a tobacco company’s budget, a line item for Steven J. Milloy showed that he was on the tobacco payroll while also writing columns that disparaged the science of secondhand smoke … As a way to defend industry from government regulation, corporate advocates routinely referred to studies published in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology … On the journal’s website, I was somehow admitted to the society’s member’s only section. While scanning the minutes of its meetings, I noted that they were held in the offices of a law firm that defended companies from scrutiny by the FDA. Many members of the journal’s board had strong ties to the tobacco, pharmaceutical, and agrochemical industry. Indeed, a recent study of the journal called into question the many dubious papers it has published on tobacco.” Newsweek Publishes Industry Propaganda Without Disclosing Conflicts of Interest Disturbingly, popular news sources such as Newsweek and USA Today still choose to peddle this kind of industry propaganda. In a recent post, U.S. Right to Know (USRTK) asks, “Why are Newsweek and USA Today so willing to let special interests mislead their readers?”13 Last year, Henry Miller was fired by Forbes magazine when it was revealed an article published in his name had been written almost entirely by Monsanto. Fast-forward just a few months, and on January 19, 2018, Newsweek ran an article by Miller with the headline “The Campaign for Organic Food Is a Deceitful, Expensive Scam.”14,15 In this obvious hit piece aimed at invalidating the organic industry to protect chemical technology giants like Monsanto, Miller attacks New York Times reporter Danny Hakim’s writings, saying Hakim failed to do his homework before writing about genetic engineering. However, what people don’t realize — because Miller doesn’t reveal it, and Newsweek editors didn’t add it — is that Miller has a very personal gripe against Hakim. Hakim was the reporter who revealed Monsanto wrote Miller’s Forbes article. Miller mentions none of that, nor does he disclose his collaborations with Monsanto. The fact that Newsweek let this lack of disclosure slide is disconcerting. The fact that they published anything by Miller at all is astounding, considering his reputation as an independent expert on GMOs has been soundly demolished. It’s now a well-known fact that Miller speaks for the chemical technology industry. As noted by USRTK:16 “Monsanto’s fingerprints were all over Miller’s Newsweek article … Miller used pesticide industry sources to make false claims about organic farming and attacked people who were named on a target list that had been developed by Monsanto and Jay Byrne, Monsanto’s former director of corporate communications, who was quoted in Miller’s piece with no mention of the Monsanto affiliation. None of this appears to bother Newsweek Opinion Editor Nicholas Wapshott, according to an on-the-record email exchange.” That email exchange is too extensive for me to copy here, but I recommend you read it. It’s rather remarkable. In a nutshell, Wapshott chooses to print Miller’s propaganda because he’s met the man and “he seems genuine.” USA Today Provides Platform for Industry Front Group In a similar vein, USA Today recently published information furnished by the American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) — a well-known front group (among those in the know) for several of the most harmful industries on the planet, including fracking, tobacco and agrichemicals — without disclosing any of these ties to readers. As noted by USRTK:17 “In February 2017, two dozen health, environmental, labor and public interest groups wrote to the editors of USA Today asking the paper to stop publishing science columns by the ACSH, or at least provide full disclosures about who funds the group … ACSH spins science on fracking, e-cigarettes, toxic cosmetics and agrichemical … products, and solicits funding from those industries in exchange. Recent reporting establishes that ACSH works with Monsanto on messaging campaigns.” USA Today editorial page editor Bill Sternberg responded saying that Alex Berezow, who wrote the piece in question, is considered “a credible voice on scientific issues,” citing the fact that Berezow has been on the paper’s board of contributors since 2011, holds a Ph.D. in microbiology, founded RealClearScience and is a contributor to many mainstream news outlets. The problem is, Berezow is also a senior fellow at ACSH, yet readers are not informed of this or the conflicts of interest inherent in this connection. It’s truly unfortunate, but as noted by investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson, author of “Stonewalled,” investigative journalism has taken a backseat to corporate propaganda and news skewed to favor a particular corporate viewpoint. Another book that takes you on a deep dive into the murky waters of corporate-based influence is “Whitewash: The Story of a Weed Killer, Cancer, and the Corruption of Science,” written by lifelong journalist and former Reuters reporter Carey Gillam. As noted by both Attkisson and Gillam, the main problem we face today is the fact that corporate interests have been allowed to trump public safety. Publishing articles by industry mouthpieces like Miller and ACSH without disclosing readily apparent conflicts of interest keeps this dangerous status quo in place. Revolving Door Between Big Pharma and Federal Agencies Keep Spinning In related news, Kaiser Health notes that hundreds of individuals have “glided through the ‘revolving door’ that connects the drug industry to Capitol Hill and the Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS].”18 One of the latest is Alex Azar, former president of Eli Lilly and Company, who stepped into the position of HHS Secretary on January 24. As noted by NPR:19 “In that role, he'll oversee the Food and Drug Administration [FDA], which regulates prescription drugs including those produced by his former employer. He'll also oversee Medicare and Medicaid, which together spend hundreds of billions of dollars each year on prescription medications.” According to Kaiser Health News’ investigation, nearly 340 former congressional staffers are now employed either by drug companies or their lobbying firms, and more than a dozen former drug company employees are now sitting on Capitol Hill and in various health care policy committees. Some of the most recent examples, aside from Azar, include: Scott Gottlieb, former venture capitalist “with deep ties to the pharmaceutical industry,” now FDA Commissioner Keagan Lenihan, former lobbyist for the drug distributor McKesson, now senior counselor to Azar John O’Brien, former PhRMA lobbyist, now deputy assistant secretary of health policy for HHS Planning and Evaluation Mary-Sumpter Lapinski, former lobbyist for Bristol-Myers Squibb, now counselor for the HHS secretary’s office As noted by Jock Friedly, founder and president of LegiStorm20 (a congressional directory app that provides real-time data and alerts on congressional hearings, town hall gatherings and more): “Who do they really work for? Are they working for the person who is paying their bills at that moment or are they essentially working on behalf of the interests who have funded them in the past and may fund them in the future?” While there may be rare exceptions, more often than not, professional relationships are not easily severed, and favors large and small tend to be expected from, and granted by, old colleagues. Add in the hope or promise of a financial reward, and it’s easy to see how public interests end up being sacrificed. There are no easy answers to these problems, but exposing the truth is a crucial step in the corrective process.
