hey!! i saw in your FAQ that you mention how the idea of glo-ups kind of started from movies, and i was wondering if you had any glo-up movie recommendations?

Honestly, the first example that comes to my mind is Fairy Odd Move; Grow Up Timmy Turner, and how Tootie moved away and came back with a glo up. One could argue that Cinderella is the classic example of a glo up. Alternatively, so is Alex from The Devil Wears Prada and Cady from Mean Girls, or even Pretty Woman’s Vivian.

The issue is that a lot of the movie examples are toxic. For instance, Insatiable season one implies a glo up but it’s a bit fatphobic, which they try to fix in season 2. Alternatively there’s the age old trope of the “tom-boy” who has to dress up for prom or something and all her guy friends start crushing on her, or the one where the nerd girl takes off her glasses and ponytail and she’s instantly beautiful. House Bunny shows that a glo up can make you vain and conceited, even though Shelley Darlingson was trying to show that a glo up was supposed to be about channeling your best self and did nothing but support the ladies around her, but that message was shoved under the carpet by the whole “you don’t have to dress inappropriately to be pretty”.

All these traditional “glo up” tropes are pretty toxic, and I don’t like recommending movies and shows that have them. I think part of the issue is that people assume glo ups are physical things, like if you lose all this weight or get contact lenses, then suddenly you’re beautiful. That’s not how it works. Which is why, as you’ll find in most of these examples, they eventually realize that making an effort to look good eventually ended up being their demise and at the end they learn their lesson and go back to their older ways. 

The glo up community on instagram and tumblr on the other hand recognize that the movie glo ups are often toxic and work towards an overall self improvement. Yes you should take care of your skin. Yes you should wear clothes that complement you. Yes you should look presentable. But that’s not all a glo up is. The community also encourages you to study better, and to read more, and how to get better job prospects and improve your social skills. And most importantly, to support and encourage others on their own glo up journey. It’s not a competition and we’re all in this together. Yet often, in movies that you’ll see that it becomes a competition, whether it’s about prom queen or winning the heart of that cute boy, whatever it is, it involves dragging someone down that has similar goals as you. That’s not how we do things here. There’s enough space for all of us to be happy and successful. And even if someone else gets that thing we were hoping for, such as that single job position, we show our support.

12.  Do you think there are instances where murder is justified? Why or why not?

Oh, absolutely. Ollie has been in this club for so long and has murdered people himself, so he thinks there are instances where murder is definitely justified and necessary. They associate with some fucked up people so it’s bound to happen.

I WOULDN’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START. Ollie was inspired by so many fictional characters that I love. Here’s a small list, one day I’ll make a cute edit for all of them but we’ll settle on a list for now.
