Last week I brought an ailing Pop to a new Vet after he had been losing weight and found out he had a mass in his abdomen. Operating was not an option so home with me he came for hospice care. Yesterday Pop started needing syringe feeding around the clock but he is not in pain and mostly sleeps deeply. I on the other hand sleep hours at a time and schedule life around his needs, vacillating between surges of energy, exhaustion, denial of his decline, spontaneous moments of crying and anticipatory anxiety of what is to come which makes my chest ache. And yet the underpinning of the above is the love I feel for Pop, the devotion of a parent, and sheer gratitude for every moment we have left to spend together. It’s 4am post feeding, me watching CNN and Pop in his little bed next to me on the couch with an electric blanket underneath and his SpongeBob blanket keeping him warm. At this late hour I am grateful to Pop for coming into my life and teaching me so much, I can only hope he feels he had a great life in this zoo crew that we are. I am grateful to; friends and family who understand and offer support; customers who are ok with their Chrissannthemum order being a little delayed getting to them, clients who do not hesitate when asked to reschedule an appointment because I’m needed at home, my other cats who somehow know I’m needed more elsewhere and adjust better than I ask of them. Most of all I am grateful for and thankful to every pet parent who has gone through last days and moments with their furkid(s) yet finds the resolve to welcome another furkid into their heart. Poor baby, betrayed by his family and taken to shelter with lots of noises from the other dogs that doesn’t get use to a shelter environment, and so was Echeo. When I inquired about her, it turned out she wouldn’t be a good fit in our home. We didn’t need a third dog, but I couldn’t get it out of my heart that we had the room, resources and love for another dog. After learning more about NYCACC, I knew that’s where my dog had to come from. I searched their website all week and when I saw your profile on Friday, I knew I had to meet you, so off to Manhattan on a Friday night we went. When they told us about your leg and back problems, the story of how you never saw a vet in your six years of life and then your previous owner just dumped you, I knew you had to come home with us. When they actually brought you out to us, it was a done deal and we had to get you out of there. You might be a bit high maintenance but you are so sweet and loving. And you fit into our little family perfectly. You don’t care where we go or what we do, you just want to be included and be with your people. You might not enjoy her as much as Arnold and Shadow, but we are so proud of how well you’ve adjusted to the baby-even when her little feet kick you in the head while she’s on my lap or when she covered all three of us in spit up.
