His Mistake (Shen x Mui)

“Master Shen,” her voice calls, sweetly. She asks about his day, and he tries to focus on the conversation; tries not to fixate on her lips, soft looking and pulled into a slight smile, the way they always were when they were together. she must notice he seems distracted, because she tries his name again, lips wrapped around the syllables of his name. 

Mui had always been formal with him, sweet and kind but always with the veneer of polite respect. His name, but always preceded with a title, as if it was necessary to keep the distance of formality between them. Maybe it was. 

He feels at ease with her; like the world is far away and he could spend forever in these moments of talking casually with her, teasing her lightly because she’s just too cute. When he’s with her, it’s easy to forget everything else. He feels so at ease that sometimes his fingers twitch with the desire to reach out and touch her- sometimes he does; a hand on the top of her head, fingers pinching at her cheeks, a hand on her arm. He’s glad for the gloves he wears, separating him from truly touching her- if he did, he knows he’d not be able to pull his hand away. 

Sometimes, he’s thankful for the carefully calculated space carved between them; standing so close, but just far enough that their hands are unlikely to brush. Conversations between them that feel so easy, so natural, he can almost pretend that being together would really be like that- easy. But her words are careful, and anytime she calls out to him, it’s ‘master shen’, a reminder of the space between them.  

Later, long after he and Mui had each retired to their respective rooms, he thinks about their time together. Mui had attached herself to him, dutifully following him around, carefully taking note of him, carefully getting to know him. Somehow, despite his best efforts, she’d found a way to work her way into his life, slowly at first, so slowly he hadn't noticed her sneaking up on him until she was already too close. And then all at once everything was her- her; waiting for him after missions, her; making him meals, her; tying his tie in the morning with gentle hands and a soft smile. He hadn't even noticed how she’d figured him out so completely. And somehow, in the process, he had gotten to know her; had gotten used to her constant presence in his life. Maybe that was his mistake.

Oh, that's interesting. Not only can SICK see people's internal structure, but Fuuko's body got remodeled through the Ark.

Another interesting bit of world-building; the Vision abilities are traditionally more offensive. Seeing people like Shen, Rip, and Juiz, that makes sense, but Chikara's a very defense-oriented Negator.

Day 3 - Favorite Dynamic: Fuuko x Feng

As I said on Day 1, I love love, but for as much as I enjoy Gina's affectionate love that is defined through togetherness, I can't help but find the opposite end of the spectrum a lot more compelling

Whether his feelings are romantic is completely up for debate, but the dynamic between Feng and Fuuko is absolutely defined through their emotional and physical distance: without a doubt, what Feng feels for Fuuko can best be described as pining

While L100's Feng was a man defined by despair, the fear of losing everything he had gained, L101's Feng is a man defined by loneliness, the fear that he can never share what he was with anyone. All of his rivals withered and died, giving way to the next generation of strangers who Feng did not know and could not relate to. Though they would challenge him, they could not connect with him, the generational gap being too great to bridge

Until Fuuko came along

Another ageless being, alone and stagnant in a world constantly reshaping itself like riverbanks in the flow of time. At least, that's what he saw; while Feng committed himself to digging his feet in and standing in place, Fuuko committed herself to perpetual motion. While Feng stood still and let everyone pass him by, Fuuko ran up to everyone she could so she could walk alongside them for as long as possible

And whether he realized it or not, from Fuuko's influence, Feng finally uprooted himself. To follow the one person who he felt he could walk alongside, Feng finally allowed himself to change and to let other people into his world

While L100 Feng took Shen under his wing all the same, the meaning of that action was completely different. L100 Feng planted trees to harvest the wood, with the intent of cutting them down at their peak, but L101 Feng nurtured a garden, creating something that gave him a sense of purpose beyond getting stronger for his own sake

"Don't put your faith in the hands of the weak! The weak will die!!" "I won't die. After all, you're strong, Feng. So you'll protect us, right?" - Feng and Shen, ch.166

In L100, when Shen tried to save Mei, Feng simply looked on. If both children died, then that would just mean neither had the potential to be strong enough to push him to greater heights. In L101, though, when Shen jumped over a cliff to save Mui, Feng panicked. He called out to him not to throw away his life, and even jumped after him to keep him safe. He didn't do it to ensure he wouldn't lose a worthy opponent, he did it to protect his son

"The safest spot is right by your side, isn't it?" - Fuuko to Feng, ch.164

Fuuko entrusted Feng with protecting Shen, and Shen entrusted Feng with raising him and Mei. They acknowledged his strength, they believed in him, and he made sure to repay their faith by living up to expectations. The Feng of the past would never be moved by sentiment, but the Feng of the present? A smile from a loved one is sure to move his heart, even if only by a little

I love to joke about Feng chasing Fuuko like a lovesick puppy, but the fact of the matter is that she changed him thoroughly and completely

"You're strong. You may even be the strongest in the world. But you know what? That's all that you are." - Shen to Feng, ch.66

Feng may well still be the physically strongest fighter in the world of Undead Unluck, but that is no longer all that he is. He's a father now. He's a friend now. And that's thanks to Fuuko's influence

Whether he's in love with her is completely up for debate, but she taught him what love is, and that's the best thing you can ask for in a dynamic

Undead Unluck Week Day 2: Favorite Scene / Moment

Now this is a hard one for me to choose...! 😅 There are too many moments / scenes that I love from this series that I can't just choose one... So, I think I'm gonna do a top 5 of some of my favorite moments / scenes in no particular order! 😁 And since there's obviously gonna be spoilers, I'm gonna put a warning here like I do when I talk about the newest chapters of Spy X Family...!: 😉

*Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss a bunch of spoilers for Undead Unluck!! You have been warned...! 👌

[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]

Number 1: Everything that Anno Un (aka Akira Kuno) did in the Autumn Arc...!

This may seem like a lot, but pretty much everything that Anno Un did in the Autumn Arc was some of my favorite moments in the entire series...!! 😆 Especially during the flashback of Akira Kuno in chapter 47, the way he talked about Andy and Fuuko as "The characters I loved the most from the story that rushed into my brain that day", that really reminded me of me and how much I love the characters and stories that I've written for myself over the years that mean the absolute world to me...! 💗 I was moved to tears and I was even like: "Was this written specifically for me...?!" 😭 And thus, Undead Unluck went from being something that I just really enjoyed to something truly special, and it's all thanks to Akira Kuno / Anno Un, the Negator Unknown...!! 🤗

Number 2: Shen comes back as Mui's Jiangshi...!!

Now, I won't talk about this as much as my first favorite moment (mainly because, yet again, I'm saving a lot of what I want to say for another day 😉), but I have gush about this scene for a minute!! 😆 I was in literal shambles when I saw Shen gets a hole through his chest and was about to die, but after a plea from his deceased sister Mei to stay alive and be there for Mui, Shen comes back to tell Mui to kill him with the Game of Death artifact in her hand so that he can be by her side and protect her...!! 🥹 Mui succeeds and Shen comes back as Mui's Jiangshi!! 👏😭Just an amazing scene around in my opinion...!!

Number 3: Andy's feelings for Fuuko...!!

The next moment I talk about happens in chapter 79, when we get to see Andy's true feelings for Fuuko...!! 💗 At this point in the story, I already enjoyed the dynamic that Fuuko and Andy shared, but this where I fell even more in love with the romantic part of their relationship!! 💗🤗💗

Number 4: "This is where our counterattack begins..."

After watching all her friends die against Sun, Fuuko declares that in Loop 101, the final loop, she will gather all of her friends and they WILL NEGATE the Gods, Luna and Sun!! ✊ This moment gave me literal chills when I first read it and made Fuuko even more of a favorite mine than she already was...!! 👏👏👏

Number 5: "We are so glad that we picked you..."

There are so many amazing parts in Loop 101, but one of my absolute favorites happened not that long ago in chapter 196!! This is where we learned that Negator's aren't chosen by God, but by the previous negation ability holders...!! 😲 This was a HUGE revelation for the series and makes me even excited to see how Fuuko and the Union will win against the Gods and their Master Rules!! 👏😆

Boy, it was really hard to only pick five of my favorite moments (and even harder to just choose one), but I really love the choices that I made and hope that if I get the chance again some other time, I can share more of my favorite scenes from Undead Unluck!! 😁

Two days down, five more to go!! Hopefully I can keep up this momentum for the rest of the week...!! 🤞

Burning Heat (shen x mui)

Mui’s hands had worked diligently at his tie, well practiced after doing it for so long. She stands close to him, body almost pushed against his, so much shorter than him that he can't really see her face from such a steep angle, but even so, he knows her face well enough to know the way her brows furrow just so when she’s focused on something. 

He lets his hands rest at his sides, and like everyday, he resists the urge to touch her. Shen makes casual conversation, stealing a glance down at her once or twice. She seems delighted anytime they talk, and he wonders if she enjoys this closeness as well. It’s so fleeting, but it’s always something he looks forward to. 

When she retracts her hands, for just a second, her fingers brush his neck. The touch is so brief he could have imagined it, if not for the way his skin was left burning from the scorching heat of her hands.
