Look, as I’m rewatching all of Evil to prevent withdrawals (it’s not working, for the record), I’m reminded of how much I fucking despise Sheryl.
Like even knowing what happens to her in the end does not redeem her. She’s a crappy grandma who doesn’t pay attention to her grandkids in the way that they need, she lies to them, and she literally wants their father dead. She was legit gonna let the guys just kill Andy and the only reason they didn’t is because she realized that the girls knew Leland was pretending to be Andy.
Like I can recognize that her character is interestingly written and I understand the purpose she serves for the narrative, but, like…
I despise her. More than Leland. At least Leland doesn’t pretend he’s doing everything for a good reason—he’s unapologetic about his choices to help evil. I dunno. Maybe I’m blinded by the pretty blue eyes behind the glasses.
evil s2e11 i is for irs (fake palindromes by andrew bird)
i was very tickled with this sequence because i, too, am very literal when it comes to making edits and they just straight up made their sequence details line up with the lyrics from this 2005 song
(absolutely terrifying/crushing storyline for sheryl, the episode prior to this... oof. along with lexis. this show sure is going after every single fear and anxiety a human could have)
I think Sheryl is going to die. We know there's gonna be a wake at Kristen's house this season and I thought it would be one of the 4 Ls or Andy but they seem to be safe now & Sheryl is going to try and kill Leland so...
I am uncertain if I want to restart my ongoing post of writing about the show. At the least I’ve taken off this season. I haven’t noticed much writing about it, but I haven’t been looking either.
I liked the third better than the second season, which had too much of Leland’s conspiracy group. Here they’re more in the background and are mostly seen from the point of view of The Vatican’s Entity, which is a better perspective for the series ambivalent tone. (While the season was airing I saw Brian D’Arcy James, who plays The Entity’s Victor LeConte in Into The Woods as The Baker. He has range.) That said the ongoing plot about Leland, Sheryl and company kidnapping Kristen’s husband Andy was shocking and disturbing. Leland’s “writing advice” to Kurt Boggs was silly, but got disturbing the more dedicated Kurt was to it.
It’s the second show I watched this summer with Andrea Martin on it. My feelings about her character oscillate. Some times she sees though peoples bullshit, but she’s also a fanatic who threatens to unbalance the series tension between supernatural and mundane explanations.
Wish there was more Ben. Season two was better with this. But I do appreciate seeing more of his sister, Karima and their club of super smart people.
The second season end with a cliffhanger of David and Kristen kissing after she confessed her murder of serial killer Orson LeRuox. The sexual tension between David and Kristen dissipate after the kiss, at least from her side. David’s started seeing a demon who looked like Kristen and regularly flirted with him. Kristen’s issues were more about modeling strong, assertive behavior to her children. And I liked how impossible it seemed to be good while doing this. Also it included more time with her children, who are all becoming more distinct and involved.
I have often thought that one of the things I like about Evil is that the main characters aren’t cops. They don’t carry around firearms, they can’t arrest or threaten to arrest anyone. It tends to mean that the climaxes feel a little anticlimactic, but in a way that works to keep things unsettled. I’m not entirely satisfied by this season, but some of that is just because I want more.
The song "greedy" by Tate McRae really makes me think of Kristen and Sheryl from the show Evil. Like them and some of their relationships with people.
Like mother, like daughter.
[In case anyone is curious, Evil is rated MA (for Mature Adults) and the song does contain some foul language. Just in case anyone understandably thought I was talking about some media/songs more family-friendly or wanted to start blasting the music/show with kids around, lol.]
