Blue Birds of Happiness
Blue is an extra-fun color for birds to be, because, as you may have heard, it is not created by a pigment. Blue feathers (and the blue scales on butterfly wings, and the blue irises of some humans) are structural, meaning that the color is created by the physical properties of the living tissue, which are arranged in such a way that they reflect the short wavelengths of blue light. Often this is paired with a dark pigment which absorbs other colors of light and makes the blue 'pop'. Look at all the tints and shades they can make!

Before Us
By W. S. Merwin
Before Us
You were there all the time and I saw only
the days the air
the nights the moon changing
cars passing and faces at windows
the windows
the rain the leaves the years
words on pages telling of something else
wind in a mirror
everything begins so late after all
when the solitaires have already gone
and the doves of Tanna
when the Laughing Owls have
long been followed by question marks
and honeycreepers and the brown
bears of Atlas
the white wolf and the sea mink have not been seen
by anyone living
we wake so late after many dreams
it is clear
when the lake has vanished
the shepherds have left the shielings
grandparents have dissolved with their memories
dictionaries are full of graves
most of the rivers are lethal
we thought we were younger
through all those ages of knowing nothing
and there you are
at last after such fallings away and voyages
beside me in the dawning
we wake together and the world is here in its dew
you are here and the morning is whole
finally the light is young
because it is here it is not like anything
how could it have taken you so long to appear
bloom of air tenderness of leaves
where were you when the lies were voting
the fingers believed faces on money
where were we when the smoke washed us
and the hours cracked as they rang
where was I when we passed each other
on the same streets
and travelled by the same panes to the same stations
now we have only the age that is left
to be together
the brief air the vanishing green
ordure in office tourists on the headland
the last hours of the sea
now we have only the words we remember
to say to each other
only the morning of your eyes and the day
of our faces to be together
only the time of our hands with its vexed
motor and the note
of the thrush on the guava branch in the shining rain
for the rest of our lives

Mini Website Update
Hello! There's this big, beautiful button on the character guide page of the website:
Tumblr media
It was slightly broken. Sure, it led to a random bird page on Wikipedia, but it only led to a random bird page under a specific category so you'd only get, like, 25 birds total. I've fixed this button so now it's TRULY random! You can get anything from a Eurasian sparrowhawk to a shining honeycreeper with a click of the button.
Try it out on the website! If you'd prefer, try it out here!
Click this to get a random bird page on Wikipedia!

I’m apologising for this icon change but only because it gives the false impression that I have ever actually blogged about Vocaloids in the past five years, which I have not.
To be honest my icon and (mobile) blog theme changes have become some weird means of self expression which is now driven only by unexplainable impulses to somehow reflect my current mood or whatever. The Dorothea icon has been getting on my nerves the last couple of days because it suddenly felt like it didn’t fit me, and I suddenly realised like an hour ago that my new icon absolutely had to be Kaito. And then I spend ages going through pictures of Kaito until I saw this one and immediately felt 100% certain it was the one I wanted, even though like. most of the pictures of him I had open were basically the same.
genuinely cannot explain the process by which I choose my icons any more dude. it just happens.
