Media Studies #WEEK12

In the 12th week of Media Studies, we began preparing a mock shoot for future reference to get a better idea about the visual look of our film, while at the same time looking for an actress for our film.

Mock Shoot

A mock shoot is essentially a practice session before the actual shooting a film and it involves the crew going through the motions of a scene or a sequence.  During our mock shoot, we were able to experiment with different camera angles and movements, helping us to find the best way to present our film.

Having a mock shoot also allowed our actors to get familiar with their characters and helped support the storyboard better as well. During certain scenes like the fight scene there was a lot of improvisation done after we conducted the mock shoot, this helped us to identify the problems early on and make adjustments accordingly, increasing our productivity. 

The process of creating the mock shoot

By keeping the mock shoot, we were able to track how much time each scene was taking, and we were relieved to know it all fit under the 5 minute mark of our film.

The idea of having a mock shoot is great as especially from a cinematographers perspective, I was able to create compositions for the shots before getting on to the actual shoot, allowing me to have a better idea of how the outcome could look like, thus helping improve the quality of the overall product ultimately.

Casting our Actress

After the completion of our mock shoot we were ready to begin shooting as we were complete with the pre-production process, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, our original actress backed out of the film last minute. This resulted in us having to recast a new actress which held us back by about a week. Despite this underwhelming setback we were still motivated to look for a new actrress. 

We received an audition clip by Ritika Sharma where she is acting out a scene from the move ‘Euphoria.’

After viewing her audition, we thought she was fitting for Anya’s role as her dialogue delivery was sharp, while being emotionally connecting, which was what we were looking for, leading to her being casted to play Anya.

Overall, it was a well spent week as we were able to get our mock shoot completed which allowed us to get a better idea of the visual framework of the film scene by scene. We were also able to find a replacement actress for Anya’s role; ultimately, everything worked out well.

Camera practice and Composition

During week 12, after the mock shoot, I began practicing different shots and angles with my phone camera as it was more flexible to shoot tiny figurines made of Legos. I chose them as the subjects of my camera session as Lego characters can easily be moved around and their positions can be adjusted, making them flexible to use.

As a cinematographer, composing shots before the actual shoot is a great way to previsualize the scene with the use of Lego Mini-figures. I was able to easily create a 3D visual of the final scene of our film, while also being able to decide where the camera placements could be in the most optimum manner as this climax scene holds great significance. This helped me take decisions whether I should keep a specific shot/angle or discard it.

The photo above is the composition I decided to keep in the first and last shot of the film; an establishing shot of the bus stop at a distance. The placement of the characters may vary.

In the video above you will see the framing and composition of the shots I had done. I have shown Anya majorly at high angles to show that she is almost powerless in the scene as she pours her heart out to Namit at a moment of tension. I also felt like keeping a repeating framing of a two shot of them as it gives a moment of neutrality followed by OTS shots and high and low angles between the characters, keeping a well balanced composition.

Overall, I was able to communicate my thought process in a visual manner to my crew mates, making it more easier for them to understand how I plan to compose the shots of scene 10. In the mock shoot this scene lacked varying shots and angles. Which is why I attempted to add more different shots in the scene through this practice session as they helped convey the message from the actors better. I was also able to get a better feel with the camera prior to the shoot which helped me feel more prepared.
