Splurged on some berocco to make this pattern again. I don't especially like how the yo/dec gap closing worked with this yarn texture, but it's done and I have enough leftover yarn to make it again with some experimental alterations.

i know im basically a fandom art blog but i gotta step out of my lane and say: don't listen to people who say "your first knitting project can't be socks." it can be socks. they're all making socks more complicated than they need to be. they're working for Big Needles. don't listen to Big Needles listen to the people.
look at me. look me in the eyes. you don't need to sculpt a foot out of yarn. you don't need to turn a heel. shortrows??? never done 'em. a gusset???? probably a good idea — but not necessarily required. at least not for low arches.
the most basic sock you can make is a tube with two hats. a hat on the toe and a hat on the heel. anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. i have four pairs of socks and the only reason the first one doesn't fit me was bc i misplaced the heel. it will fit someone. just not me.
i am holding you by the shoulders. listen. i promise you. you don't need to make a hat first if you don't want to. you DO need to make tubes and the process of making a hat IS nearly identical to making a sock. but you just gotta learn to make tubes, and increases, and decreases, and do ribbing. it's okay. do what you want.
they're scared you'll think it's too challenging and give up. be fueled by spite. prove them wrong. have comfy socks.
#cackle rants#knitting#this post is brought to you by 'every time i look at more complicated sock methods i think ''ew'' and go back to my Tubes'#maybe someday I'll learn to make gussets. but not if they require Math or Counting Rounds. ew.#also it turns out that 90% of the skills it takes to make these socks translate directly to making raglan sweaters???? uh oh!#I've already knit one Tiny Raglan and someday i WILL be making a real one#but im safe for now bc I don't have needles for it#(also idk if this is obvious but any beef it seems like i have with the knitting community is like 75% a joke)

Officially done with my Lusse Lelle Socks by Emelie Björnkvist.
I modded them somewhat. Because my foot will not fit in a shortrow heel. And I truly despise the feeling of heels and toes that's just stockinette when the rest of the foot is colorwork = different thickness in fabric.
First pair of colorwork socks and I did love it. Will make more. Used ladderback jacquard technique all the way for extra stretchyness.
Might be out of season for lussebullar, but my floors are cold and so are my feet so I don't care hihi!

Current knitting project, sorry, ONE current knitting project that should be the one and only except... Well. Driving me nuts. I-cord cast-on, German shortrows... Urgh. The i-cord has in fact been so annoying the whole project has been hibernating for almost 3 months. Considering I meant to have it done by Christmas? Double urgh.
Not a good project for boosting my spirits, you know?

The sirena sweater you made is so beautiful!! Would you say the pattern is doable for someone who has never done cabling before?
Thank you so much! I would say yes, as long as you are familiar with German shortrow shaping and can take it really slow. Familiarize yourself with how to fix cables by dropping down stitches, it will save you! In this pattern you have to cable on the wrong side for the back panel bc of the shortrows. I would say it's on the intermediate side but I wouldn't discourage you from trying! Just don't expect to knit it in a month if it's your first cabled jumper :)

I've been practicing W&T Short Rows without concealing the wraps as recommended by Trin Annelie, the designer of the Flow Tee that I'm working on. She's found these are the least visible on Reverse Stockinette. I'm hoping that the short rows on my main project turn out ok. I'm a little more practiced at least 😆 #knitting #knitter #knittedtee #shortrows

I almost always use some sort of pattern, whether self drafted or purchased/downloaded for free. And normally if im making my own its based heavily off a pattern someone else made. (The exception is the shortrow pumpkin cozy im knitting which is entirely freehanded and I'm just writing the pattern down after the fact.)
Im very much a measure twice cut once type of person, so having a pattern is really important to me.
Knitting a freehand bag and started wondering how often people even use patterns, anyway. So--how often do you use a pattern when you make things ? This include knitting/crochet/sewing/weaving/nalbinding/bobbin lace/tatting/etc but also things like woodworking, cooking, and baking. If you want to just pick the thing you do most often that's fine.
I personally do not use patterns as I find them far more confusing than just figuring out the construction of an item and simply making it. I do very occasionally browse ravelry for inspiration but have downloaded maybe 2. In the 5 or so years since I joined. And have followed exactly 1, which I modified every single aspect of. In my defense, dyslexia.

sounds horrifying to do if you want matching colored socks? maybe marginally better if one is inside out so at least the stitch orientations alternate if not the color
but someone mentioned heel shortrows in the notes and dang yeah
think i might just split the heel needle for that section
but also i'm a person with big fat calves so i do increases above the ankle too! increases are also ow with this!

The SO's Christmas socks are done! (The original present only contained one sock, as per tradition.) They're so pretty. And so soft!
Pattern is Serra by Sari Nordlund. Yarn is Mellanraggi by Järbo.
I always forget how quick a pair of dk socks knit up. You can get a pair of socks in a week, ten days! That's crazy. A pair of fingering socks usually take me about a month. And I very rarely knit dk socks, so I forget between projects how fast they go.
The pattern was, as usual, a joy to knit. Sari's patterns are always chef's kiss to follow. (Although I did change the heel. But only because the shortrow heel doesn't fit on my SO's foot. At all.)
The yarn was a surprise for me though. Never knit with it before. But it was so soft and squishy and just so much higher quality than dk sock yarns I've knit with before. Even though I did a lot of cables and structure and what have you, it was still such a good feeling in the hands to knit with. And not splitty at all, which some squishy sock yarn is. I want a pair of socks in this yarn for sure.

Any reccommendations for easy, cute first sweater patterns? I haven't knit anything in a while but I wanna jump back in this winter 💫
Id probably recommend a raglan sweater! Maybe the doppio sweater, German shortrows are easy :) https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/doppio-sweater
Or the Novice sweater by Petite knit! https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/novice-sweater
Heres a free option, the step by step sweater by Florence Miller: https://youtu.be/wtofisZp7EA?si=4PGf_D6y-G9rCgGn
One final option: the Stripe Hype sweater by Veronica Lindberg: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/stripe-hype-sweater
