But girl, do you critique those child beauty pageants? Do you critique the parents of kids who are made up and paid to be in ads & other media? Do you critique the parents of kids who have music careers and are presenting in unambiguously sexualized ways--the teenbeat type heartthrobs, the teen pop and hiphop queens? Its the exact same shit. If you wanna say kids have such limited agency that anything they do is something theyre made to do & that making kids do things is fucked up, then theres a world of child abuse going on. And if you selectively critique it when its drag that a kid is "being made to do", presumably its because you think drag is inherently more sinister or sexual than the mainstreamed toddlers in tiaras. Like im not a fan of showkids, but thats because capitalism twists motives and ruins outcomes and therefore any workplace is just a shitty unsafe environment ready to go wrong, particularly for very small & easily physically overpowered people who have limited legal rights & situational knowledge. People abuse kids, the more power they have over the kid the easier it seems, so the more likely it becomes. If someone can buy your parents cooperation they can do anything to you, and if your parent has you making money for them, ipsofacto your parent can be bought. Other people who are bigger than children tend to just ignore this because theyre busy dealing with being abused themselves, often by the same people who abuse kids...unless a case really leaps out at them for one reason or another. And this here, these drag kids-- imo, this case of it-could-go-bad isnt alarming in its unusualness, or its specifics. The opposite, actually. Its not very alarming in itself, and whats alarming about it, if anything, isnt the drag, but rather that its not unusual for adults to see no problem with kids doing shit thats "too grown" for them while in the public eye of a culture with an unremoved fetishization of rape and a medieval set of legislations that objectify and commodify "minors" (bad mix, that).
