i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one
Tumblr media
his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.
ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication

People who get so heated about the toshiro-laios fight that they think toshiro genuinely hates laios are incredibly silly to me like. yes laios gets on his nerves and the fight came about because toshiro let a lot of annoyance simmer for a LONG time instead of expressing his feelings but once that tension resolves through their stupid fight he is able to see more clearly and realise he does not HATE laios, he ENVIES him. It just seems like such a blatantly obvious part of his character that people just can't grasp for some reason?? You don't hate someone and then talk to them about your unsaid feeling for his sister and give him a bell to ring if he needs you. You can dislike whatever characters you want but I can't stand when people mischaracterise characters to such a huge extent. Learn some basic media literacy.

Shuro talks a lot of shit for someone who just subjected Laios to one of the funniest examples of emotional whiplash I’ve ever seen.
He went from this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Within the span of what?? An hour?? Less??
Yeah, sure. It’s completely normal to swing violently from “you disgust me I hate everything about you,” to “if you’re in danger ring this bell, and I’ll immediately get someone to to transport you to my country—where I have a great amount of power and influence—so that you can be safe forever.”
Tumblr media
Poor Laios just went through a mixed signals marathon at the hands of this man, can you possibly blame him for misinterpreting Shuro’s behavior up to this point??

Laois really said:
"While you studied the blade, I got three square meals a day with balanced nutrients, 8 hours of sleep and time to rest after my injuries, and thats why im gonna KICK YOUR ASS"

The Shuro hate because of the latest episode is pouring in and I cannot even begin to tell you how upsetting it is to see someone who is so much like me be berated by people for being so called "ableist" and "misogynistic" and simply "the worst". He is a product of his environment (a different country, which means a different culture), and sure his love for Falin may be one-sided, but it is still love, and it's love enough he's risking hunger and sleeplessness and self care to find her. Even Chilchuck pointed out that him proposing spontaneously is just something people in his country do. He is not shallow with his love. The same can be seen with his frustration with Laios. It's borned out of miscommunication and cultural differences, and it is clear, very clear, at the end of the episode that he cares deeply for both Laios and Falin. He's envious of Laios's personable and straightforward nature, and he admitted to it. He gave Laios a way out (via the magic bell) and promised to give him his aid when Laios is in trouble. He is a complex and well-written character, and he deserves more than just people shallowly trashing on him.
Also Shuro is also autistic to me but in a different way Laios is ✌️ Come on: hyperfocusing at the cost of your health? Relying on social cues to predict how people think? Too awkward to correct Laios from the fact that he's been saying his name wrong the entire time (his real name is Toshiro)?
Edit: Honestly? Genuinely? I also think a lot of the hate that Shuro receives also borderlines antagonistic because he's "getting in the way of Farcille" (he has not shown any creepy attitude towards Falin) and racist. Genuinely I think a lot of American/Western fans are super racist towards Shuro. He's angry at Laios's mistakes the same way Chilchuck and Namari do (overstepping boundaries, being ignorant of cues, etc) but nobody thinks twice about giving Chilchuck and Namari the pass. How come this repressed man from the equivalent of fucking Feudal Japan gets the boot? Is it because he fought Laios out of fear and the trauma of seeing his team die and his love interest be made into a monster thanks to dark magic? Does his apology and offer to help not count? You people are hypocrites.

Anyway this panel alone made me decide Shuro is actually really funny
Tumblr media
Practically everyone in this panel is ready to square up, including +200yo Grandpa Tansu, meanwhile Shuro is standing in the back dramatically holding himself while clearly wishing he was off this godforsaken hell island

The fistfight between Shuro and Laios is so fucking cathartic to me. Laios was not picking up on social cues for so long and when that’s revealed he doesn’t do what so many of us have to and shrink away and apologize he gets MAD.
He punches Shuro in the face and says you should have been more fucking clear, and I genuinely find that so empowering.

"it feels like we were pretty close,... so i figured toshiro and i would end up the same way as those two."
oh girl if only you knew. how bad it really is.
context below the cut 👇
this comic was inspired by hien's adventurer bible comic, where she wonders why her and toshiro didnt end up together despite being close as kids:
Tumblr media
that panel in particular where shes kinda bullying him in her classic Hien way but he takes it as actual mean-ness... i like to think Hien's humour is kinda joke bullying her friends, and in some friend groups that's just the vibe (like her and benchidori "bullying" each other so bluntly, but its all jokes)! but other friend groups dont do that! shiro doesn't relate to that kind of humour. his feelings were actually hurt even if she may have had 100 layers of irony and no real ill intentions behind it. she probably didnt understand what it would do to a young boy to belittle him for crying... she fumbled a soft man w her sharp personality

Shuro is from a high-context culture and expects Laios to pick up the hint that Shuro doesn’t like him. Laios’s defense is he was just so excited to be friends with someone he didn’t notice.
But Shuro holds out some hope that Falin will accept his proposal, even though “I’ll think about it.” usually means “No” in this context.
It’s the same reason Laois gave- Shuro is so excited about Fallin he misses this obvious but subtle rejection

I was already in love with Delicious In Dungeon for the clever world building and well crafted characters but episode 17 brought a true smile to my face for something far more mundane and close to my heart; Shuro completely fumbling how to deal with a neurodivergent person (Laios), and getting slugged for it. Bless this series for shouting out "we are not obligated to engage in your unwritten rules, if you have a problem just fucking say it". Refreshing.
