Hours earlier, Loki snatched maps with a sly hand. Careful not to draw attention to himself while impulsiveness controlled his every movement. Then he studied the strange symbols and lines that mark this peculiar world, slowly making sense of them. It was a challenge in itself. But his real challenge is the stubborn horse Esje selected. For the entirety of their journey, or escape, it has resisted every single kick of his feet or move of the reigns.

But there comes a moment of peace during the journey. The horse insisted for a slower pace and Loki obliged after he sensed the change in Esje's heartbeat, radiating through her back to his chest. He let her sleep, an arm around her to stop her slipping from the saddle. It's the only time the horse has been agreeable, until nothing but a loose stone in the path rolls near it's hooves and makes the animal bolt in a loud snort. Then it's spooked into a gallop, Loki exclaiming with the sudden jerk as he tries to get the animal under control to no avail. "Shit!" Loki flails, needing both hands for the reigns but he laughs out as he has to keep Esje to him. "Er du våken!? Vi kan komme dit raskere nå!" he cackles, as now his adrenaline spikes. "I told you it does not like me!"

The small space is a nest of maps and discarded papers. It's a war room with Nadiya presiding as general at the center of it all. She twists and turns, exchanging lists of names for lists of places, scrawling meticulously in the margins of map and over different territories, towns and regions. There's a precise rapidity to her motions – not a single note made without due consideration, but not a single moment wasted by prolonged internal debate. She is a surgeon in the operating room. Her focus is completely absorbed by her task. By her search.

But her concentration wanes at the sound of the door, even though her gaze doesn't stray from the map in hand. The storm had damaged records, but the seekers had maps stored safely, much to her relief. "Isabella?" She calls to her middle child, whose footsteps are lighter than her oldest's, and less hurried than her youngest's.

The very thought of her youngest causes Nadiya's hands tighten on the edge of the map. It's been 246 days since they took Primrose. 246 days for Nadiya to comb over every map she can get her hands on, searching for every possible lead. "Remind me of the last run you were on?" She asks by way of greeting her daughter, only looking up once Bella's entered he room. "Sicamous or Mara?" The idea that seekers can't actively participate on runs right now is ludicrous to Nadiya. But given the restrictions she's facing, she makes a concerted effort to compile as much information as she can in the meantime. @rviner

In the 1930s the City of Enderby was inundated with requests to share photographs and information about its community to the rest of Canada. It was the Depression and people were looking for places they could find work and settle.

The Western Locators of Canada sent the city a Municipal Requirement Form but the city was unwilling to complete the entire form. “…we would not wish to be the means of bringing in people who, if they failed to establish themselves, would think that we had misled them,” the city clerk wrote on behalf of city council.

The city did provide the following description of the city: “Enderby is situated in the Okanagan Valley on the S&O Branch of the Canadian Pacific Railway Co., 23 miles from Sicamous Junction, and 16 miles from Salmon Arm. Incorporated year 1905. Corporate area 655 acres. Population (estimated) 800. Population outside the City limits (estimated) 800, making total population served by Enderby Post Office about 1,600. These figures are believed to be well within the mark. The people are Canadian and British, with a small percentage of foreigners. There is a good hotel, good stores, a bank, feed stable, three garages, printer (publishing weekly newspaper, the “Enderby Commoner”), a small public hospital, theatre, modern schoolhouse (graded and high schools), Lodges, Masons, Odd Fellows, Knights of Pythias, Pythian Sisters, Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire, daily train each way, electric light and power (supplied by West Canadian Hydro-electric Corporation, Ltd.), local and long distance telephone, good water supply. Camping facilities, fishing, &c., at Mabel Lake 23 miles east of town. Good hunting withing reasonable distance of town. Principal industries, small sawmill, pole, railway tie and fence post camps, creamery. Alfalfa does remarkably well. River adjoins town and runs through district. Coal of good quality found in the mountains four to six miles from town.”

The letter goes on to note that the sawmill is struggling despite many employable men and ample timber.

A second letter to the company from the city dated June 25, 1931 notes that there is a reluctance to share information on current conditions and business openings as the city struggled with the Great Depression. The city clerk noted that it would not be wise to encourage relocation without industry to provide employment.

“The representative men whom I have consulted are not willing to support the information which might be sent you, not because it is not correct, but because they feel that to encourage people to come here at the present time would be beginning at the wrong end. They say that the first thing is the means of living, that is, the establishment of an industry, with the various benefits which would follow; and that then would be the proper time to try and get people to locate here. To encourage them to come now might be the means of having them become destitute and have to be kept by the City within a few months, unless in the meantime conditions very greatly improved,” wrote the city clerk.

The letter goes on to ask if the information provided could work to help the local sawmill.
