Non Canon Guide To The Falmer Tongue: Affection and Love
Love and the language thereof was not a simple affair for the Falmer people. Courtship was as subtle and delicate as crystalline sunweave, and the art of love was not something you rushed. Naturally, the Falmer language of love is a tricky one.
Thankfully, even the Falmer had some classics and go-tos!
First off we have malae, known most famously in Calcelmo’s Stone. Roughly translated to “affection”, this term does not make much of an appearance in surviving Falmeri works of romance. However, this term does provide a more, shall we say, obvious definition in the incomplete work Leld ye Rolhivne (lit: “The Boy And His Steed”):
ye sa culiren rias hirtathel tiris ye malais genthene gandrinqei ye trembei
A very literal translation goes as follows:
[...] and the fawn that he diligently and affectionately cared for grew graceful and strong [..]
And another in a hymn, graciously given to us by a Skaal explorer:
Alatai malae av Auri-El
Genethai alae av Auri-El
Translated:
Radiant affection of Auri-El
Guiding light of Auri-El
Again we see the term malae used less as a statement of friendship or love, but rather one of caretaking and condescension. It’s safe to assume that one wouldn’t use malae when talking about their sweetheart!
Speaking of sweethearts, let’s move on to the more tender-hearted words of the ancient Falmer, specifically cemril and telaril.
Cemril is, to be blunt, what you would call a lover. As far as Falmer language goes, this is a “common” word, meaning the partnership was likely temporary, or not oath-bound in any measure.
Telaril is similar, yet there is one distinct difference: unlike cemril, telaril implies a non-sexual love. Such partnerships appeared to be rather common in the lost empire of the Snow Elves, and appeared to be treated with the same reverance as the cemril counterpart.
Note the common ending in -ril, which brings us to perhaps the most intense term the Falmer had for love: Silaril.
Silaril, to quote the famous poet Alenwe Av’Celaris, is the love that strikes like lightning. It is described to be so intense, that only the crumbling of the mountains and the draining of the seas could diminish it. From Solstheim Scroll:
Silalril, alrenaya
Leidniserai silyal
Translated:
Truest love, the light that makes my dawn
When I first laid eyes on you, I truly began to live
While the translation itself speaks volumes, what is truly telling is this small anecdote: Upon reaching this line, the translator (who shall not be named) began to openly weep, staining the edges of the scroll and nearly destroying the precious words on the ancient parchment.

Hey Des! Silaril is one of four sibling OC's made for Sarith 🕷
As the oldest, she ranks first under their Matron and serves as lead priestess of House Kzekarit. She follows Lolth in the way she's expected to, but her ambitions lie in gold and business. House Kzekarit doesn't hold the highest rank in Menzoberranzan. They're nobles in a loose sense. Silaril works to change that! She presents herself as cool-tempered, unbothered, sly, and prefers a scathing word to a weapon. Even with a superior attitude, she will readily forge alliances with "lesser" Drow Houses, Duergar merchants, rogue guilds and more where she sees value. Silaril is my Regina George. She can hold her own in a fight just fine, but prefers the intrigue of wielding everyone's secrets to her advantage. She'd sooner grab a drink and watch the chaos unfold. Yet beneath the queen bee attitude and gaslight/gatekeep/girlbossing, she is deeply frustrated with her station. Image is everything. She never gets a break to herself, can never show weakness in any capacity - even thought. Her own web is her cage. To examine this too closely would break her :C So she keeps going! She shares no particular bonds with any of her siblings. As Matron Kzekarit's heir, Silaril resolves to surpass her. However, murder is not her thing - she gets pretty dizzy at the sight of blood! It's a wonder she survived Arach-Tinilith. Thanks for your ask and interest in my silly little guys! Since campaign events from our OOTA group inspired Sporeblood, Silaril will feature in the comic as well with Sarith's siblings! 🖤
