I went to Silhouette Island, Seychelles afterwards and my favorite things I did was hike and dive!! I haven’t gone diving since I made The Water Phoenix and I didn’t how much I missed it. No pictures underwater this time but hoping to get some in my next location! . . . The first hike was 3 hours to the other side of the island where we visited an awesome beach and the oldest (113) BIGGEST turtle I’ve ever seen in my life! 🐢 . . Day 83 – feral children, feral dad

We went to breakfast. It was pretty much the same as always, but today they had sparkling wine. What a godsend. We spent the afternoon in our private, clothing-optional pool and J took a bath in the ginormous, round bathtub. We then trundled off to our 4pm rum tasting at Grann Kaz. This was a nice event. All of the rums are produced in the Seychelles and the tasting was dominated by Takamaka rums (Takamaka is a type of tree that is native to the Seychelles). Our favourites were the dark and extra dark rums, which tasted like vanilla and caramel, respectively. The Takamaka coconut rum was better than Malibu, but the pineapple rum was not as good or as strong as the Plantation Pineapple Rum we’ve had in London. There was also a vanilla and coconut rum made by Vasco, which was sickeningly sweet but apparently popular with some guests.

We learned that the Russian guy who was on his own doing work during the Valentine’s Day dinner is a tour operator. It was quite interesting talking to him about the various locations we’ve visited and plan to visit. He said he is currently on a month-long Seychelles tour. He told us that the newest joke in Russia is that since COVID, the last two democracies remaining in the world are in Russia and China. Sad, but probably true. We shared a buggy back to the resort and then went to the bar for our usual happy hour. We tried new seats today by the beach, which were blissfully light on the mosquitoes.

Dinner was at Sakura. We went back for the amazing pepper beef, which was just as good as it was last time. We had the same waiter we had on Valentine’s Day, Stephen. S managed to get into a row with the main English guy who completely ignores his feral children. Apparently they have been living here for two months and act like they own the place. We now understand why his children came up to our table to bother the waiter while he was taking our dinner order the other night. The guy is a British hooligan who clearly has no manners and a bad temper. It is now clear how these children became feral and we don’t blame them at all. The staff had to intervene and we got an apology from one of the managers, who promised to sit us away from the feral children going forward. Finally, some excitement.

Day 82 – the Silhouette island tour

Breakfast this morning was a little bit better. We had the chickpea curry today and asked to sit away from the large families. The staff today seemed much more attentive than they have been and J even got a plate of watermelon.

We went back to the room and did more admin, including getting caught up on Tripadvisor reviews. We then headed to the Silhouette medical centre by buggy for our 11th COVID test. This was a quickie – barely 5 seconds. We then stopped by the dive shop to get information about snorkelling tours. The buggy driver was a friendly chap and told us a bit about the island. There is a shop, but it is only available to the locals. Apparently all the staff have received a COVID vaccine and should be getting their second dose shortly. For now they are not allowed to visit the main island as it is quite locked down. He also explained that this Hilton is popular with families as there are no cars. This means kids can safely run wild and unsupervised around the island.

We have also figured out that they are doing a lot of renovation during the downtime. Not so nice for the current guests, but it will likely help when the resort reopens properly.

We took the Silhouette history tour today. We jumped into a buggy which took us to the Silhouette museum, at the Grann Kaz restaurant. This was the plantation home for the Dauban family, a French, aristocratic family that owned Silhouette island from around 1860 – 1960 and ran it as a coconut, breadfruit and vanilla plantation. We saw the original house as well as the mausoleum, where some of the Dauban family are buried. We also saw the local village where around 50 local villagers live. The rest of the island is apparently reserved for the Labriz hotel and staff. There is also a small conservation contingent who live here as well. It was a nice tour and we learned that Catherine Dauban still haunts the plantation house at night.

We had our usual happy hour drinks and went back to the Grann Kaz for dinner. The German family with the behaved child, a little boy named Otto, also got into our buggy to the restaurant. They were friendly.

The food at the restaurant was decent to good. S really liked the hearts of palm salad. Unfortunately they were out of avocado, so J basically had a plate of tomatoes. S’ octopus curry and J’s creole jobfish were fine, but again, not spectacular. Weirdly, J noticed the creole sauce here was similar to the creole sauce she had in St Vincent. The atmosphere at the restaurant was pretty lively and we saw a group of 8 adults that were having a great time and were still going after we left.

J got 4 mosquito bites today. S got considerably more as he didn’t wear his repellent today.

Ich probier das jetzt einfach mal aus, ob es gelingt, das eigene Hirn zu manipulieren. Wir sind alle Meister darin, uns ins Negative zu sabotieren und in Emotiinen der Vergangenheit zu wühlen.
