Silverlight - Chapter 5
Sorry for the hiatus on this fic... I really wanted to have it done before volume 7 came out. The new season of RWBY really has brought my motivation and inspiration back... that being said, I've just begun my final semester of college, so I can't say how consistent I will be. I do not intend on giving up on this fanfic - even if canon does something to prove it wrong, like kill off Mercury (oh god plz no lol) Also I know this chapter is really short, but I really needed something to set up for next chapter which is almost done as well.
AO3: Chapter 1
As if the universe couldn’t let her have one day on high, Yang had nightmares again once she had fallen asleep.
They never had Salem in them. Maybe she was cocky for not being afraid of her. Except that was a lie. She was afraid of Salem, everyone she knew and loved and cared about was. It was simply idiotic that she would even claim such a thing. But Salem wasn’t the one who haunted her.
No, the black and red and white that she saw were all the same person, over and over again. His cruel torment, and she’d cry out for Blake again and again, and she’d scream at the burning pain across her arm. She’d look down, and her automail would be gone. And then she would watch him die. Over and over again. Dead or alive, she could not escape Adam Taurus.
Nothing good had come out of what they did. She couldn’t even find peace.
Yang shot up in a cold sweat. It was early in the morning, the sky a soft silvery-blue and the sun just barely peeking over the mountains on the horizon. She heard several Beowulf Grimm in the distance, but nothing seemed out of the ordinary with them; she knew she could take them on herself if she needed to. And they sounded a ways off, so for now she figured that she and Mercury were safe.
And Mercury.
She looked over toward her reluctant companion as she lifted a hand up to her neck and checked her pulse. Her heart rate had already begun to calm down, and Yang let out a sigh. Since that day back in Argus so long ago, she hadn’t been suffering from the physical trauma as much. Her hands didn’t shake when she got into a fight. She had confidence in her strength and in her Semblance again. She didn’t see him everywhere. She was no longer scared of being hurt by him.
Yang was relieved that her exclamation had not appeared to wake Mercury up. She really didn’t want him to see her like that. He’d tricked them once already, learned how she and her sister and her friends trained, how they laughed and cried and trusted one another, how they fought. He had learned their strengths and their weaknesses, and then pulled the rug out from underneath them. He was the reason Beacon fell. He-
He wasn’t the one who cut off your arm. Don’t say it. A traitorous voice whispered in the back of her head, and Yang felt herself start to tear up.
She knew that was true, of course. Mercury was not the one who took her arm. And she knew it was unfair to link him to that. But he had been fine with all of them dying, hadn’t he? No guilt on his conscious. In fact, hadn’t he tried to kill her when they fought at Haven Academy?
He probably would have cut her arm off too, given the chance.
Feeling a wave of fury rush over her, Yang pushed it down and clenched her fists as she got back to her feet. No, it wasn’t worth it. Giving in to her anger and taking it out on Mercury was not the person she was anymore. She had grown so much more since the last time she saw him.
“Get up,” Yang commanded, tapping Mercury’s stomach with her boot.
It wasn’t like she had kicked him or anything, so Yang was caught off guard when Mercury’s arms flew up and grabbed her foot, eyes shot open and glaring at her.
“Don’t touch me like that,” he snarled.
“How else am I supposed to wake you up?” She asked, but sighed when his glare deepened. “Okay, okay. Whatever! Just get up. Let’s get going.”
They were both silent for the rest of the day. Mercury, she was surprised, didn’t try to protest or fight her or get away. Yang didn’t want to talk to him because she knew he was smarter than he appeared and didn’t want to give anything away. His whole style was about deception. She knew he liked it when people underestimated him. She couldn’t ever let her guard down around him.
~
“So I’m curious,” Mercury spoke up suddenly while Yang was preparing the rations from her bag for the two of them after setting up camp. She was once again surprised, as they had spent the entire day in silence other than the humming of her new motorbike. She found herself distracted by it now, the way the chrome plating gleamed in the moonlight. She missed the yellow of BMBLB, but found herself liking the silver of the bike more and more. Yang looked over at him to continue.
“What did Little Red tell you about that night? At Beacon, I mean.”
Yang felt her entire body grow stiff with coldness. What was he trying to accomplish? What advantage would her answering this question give him? Was he just trying to get a rise out of her? Was he trying to get information that Salem needed? Frankly she didn’t want to answer him at all. But she also felt a question burning on her lips that she knew he would never answer unless she gave him wanted he wanted.
“She told me she found you in a back hallway in the arena, looking like I had never touched you,” Yang tried to bite back the bitterness creeping into her voice. They were in the middle of Grimm territory. She had to stay calm, and she needed to remember that. “You fought her. You tried to stop her. But she knew as soon as she saw you.”
“Are you still mad we used you? Tricked you? Got the whole world to believe you were a monster?”
She flinched, feeling a wave of hatred inside her at his words. What in Remnant was he trying to accomplish? Surely this was some sort of escape plan. That had to be it. Get her upset, attract some Grimm, and the queen of darkness would swoop in to save him. She could not let herself play straight into his hand.
“I would say I’m over it,” she lied. “I can’t change what happened, what you guys did.”
He shrugged. “That’s fair, I guess.”
“I’ve got a question for you then,” Yang continued, stealing a glance at him from the corner of her eye. He looked up at her when she spoke, and she felt a smugness come over her now that she had turned the tables and caught him off guard.
She took a deep breath. “Was everything part of the trick? All the dumb shit you did that made us laugh... all the training with Pyrrha and I?” Yang swallowed hard to suppress her rising anger. “Ruby and Emerald’s friendship? That was all part of the lie, wasn’t it?”
Mercury was silent for a while, which was not the response she had expected from him at all. When she looked over at him again, he was looking away from her.
“What a dumb question, Blondie,” his words were bitter, not smug. “Of course it was.”
“Good. I didn’t want to pity you,” she crossed her arms as she laid her head down, turning away from him. “Night, Merc.”

Favorite Vacation/travel AUs
1. home is wherever i'm with you. Victor and Yuuri learn the hard way that love, while a universal feeling... might not exactly be a universal language.
Well, they might just have to make a language of their own.
Dear passengers, welcome to the Travel!Series. Now flying to Barcelona, Budapest, Santorini, Cartagena and Paris.
Buckle up and be ready for take-off.Stats

2. Silverlight. After the Grand Prix Finals, Victor takes Yuuri on a vacation to Greece. They need quiet, and privacy, to figure out what happens next.
Yuuri’s eyes widen and his breathing picks up. He smells like sleep and warm cotton and old champagne, and Victor just breathes in for a moment. “I’m offering you the opportunity to go to Greece, with me, for a week. To walk on the beach, swim in the ocean, drink wine and sleep in every day, if you wish. We’ll do everything and nothing. We’ll see the Acropolis. We’ll rent a boat. We’ll do anything you want,”— and here Victor dropped his voice to a purr —“but I’m tired of sharing you, Yuuri Katsuki. I want you to myself for a while.”

3. in the pivot of glass. The first time they had visited Paris it was March, a bit cold and drizzly, the first bright tendrils of spring just poking their way out of the cold dark hibernation of winter. A World Championship gold adorned Yuuri’s neck and another, just as valuable gold on their ring fingers. Yuuri had been to Paris before, of course, competition and ice shows had brought him to the city a few times in his career, but being there with Viktor, on their honeymoon, was an entirely different experience. The second trip to Paris, five years later, feels different, calmer yet no less dazzling. It was probably him that was different, Yuuri thought, the pair of them that have changed more than the city.
With Yuuri now retired from competitive skating, he and Viktor move back to Hasetsu to coach. But first, a trip to Paris - a break from the hectic pace of their lives and space for them to simply enjoy their time with one another.

4. La Ville Lumière. When Victor and Yuri take a week to vacation in Paris, France, neither one of them know exactly what to expect. Taking time for themselves when they'll be right back on the grind of training soon after feels like too much of a luxury, but it might be exactly what they need. Even if it does all start out with Yuri's luggage getting sent to Shanghai.

5. first light. On the way back to the hotel, Yuuri falls asleep on the passenger seat, face illuminated on and off by the passing streetlights outside. Victor looks at him out of the corner of his eye, hands steady on the steering wheel, and thinks, I’m going to marry this man.

6. Stay by My Side and Never Let Us Part. Yūri wants to be in figure skating with Viktor forever, but as the chance of competing against him approaches, Yūri gets increasingly anxious. Meanwhile, Viktor does not seem to have a stop button. In attempt to both unwind before Worlds, they go on a road trip together…in Italy.

7. Love's Greatest Attractions. Viktor kidnaps Yuuri and takes a road trip across Eastern Europe on a mission to find the Perfect Wedding Location. Cats are adopted. Mistakes are made.

8. the road that stretches out ahead. "What if we drove to France?" Viktor asks, and Yuuri says yes. Of course he does.

9. Operation: Thirst. Anyone who thinks Viktor Nikiforov isn't the type of man to plan a two week vacation just so he can ask his boyfriend to fuck him, has never met Viktor Nikiforov.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15697530
10. Two Nights in Paris. Life and love: two words starting with the same letter, mutually existing for each other. One is simple, the other not.
When Victor whisks Yuri away to Paris for the weekend, they might just find themselves asking which is which.

11. Chilled. A fluffy winter vacation short for Yuuri and Victor's trip to a wonderful Finnish winter resort, completely with dog sledding, mulled wine, and igloo front seats to the Northern Lights.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10701003
12. running through the sixes. It's become a tradition of sorts, this: running through unknown cities hand in hand, laughter echoing in empty streets and following wherever the city lights may lead them.
(For the first time, Yuuri lets himself think of forever.)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/9691829
13. Around the World in Thirty-One Days. After a year and a half juggling between wedding preparations and competitions, honeymoon time has finally come for Yuuri and Viktor. One entire month during which they'll get to see the world and its treasures, have new experiences, face travel hiccups and cherish each other's existence.

14. Happy Holi. The gang celebrates Holi while they are in India. Yuri plans to bombard certain people with colors but there's always a surprise around the corner.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15797841
15. Match. He tilts his head back, blinks away the heaviness that had settled over his eyes in his slumber, and finds himself staring up at the ceiling. And opens his eyes wide. This is not their apartment.Musings on a winter night in Dartmouth.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/17146805
16. Follow the Herd. Victor decides to steal Yuuri away on a little break, surprising him in the strangest of ways the source of inspiration for their time away.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/10291448
17. The Pied Piper of Hasetsu. Yuuri has a gift that he seems unaware of yet contributes to his image of modern fairytale prince: all animals are naturally drawn to him.
https://archiveofourown.org/works/15702810
18. a little parenthesis in eternity. There is an art to being lost in Venice — something Yuuri discovers as he and Viktor pick their way through the labyrinthine alleyways and canals. Something lonely, too, and beautiful, and delicate. Something timeless and temporary.

Summary:
But that’s what love is, isn’t it? Victor muses, as he navigates through the various ferry lanes that run almost nonstop between the islands. The acceptance of another’s flaws and foibles? He looks over at Yuuri quietly taking in the landscape, his chin on his hand and eyebrows drawn together. Victor needs to remember the same for himself, remember that all of Yuuri’s anxieties don’t just extend to skating, but to almost every part of him, turning the most vicious parts of his psyche against himself. He’s had to find his way around Yuuri’s skating anxiety for months now.
Victor realizes that he accepts this part in the rest of their lives as well, will willingly stand as a bulwark between Yuuri and his own mind. Has strength to give, to fill the well that Yuuri drains dry on a regular basis. If, that is, Yuuri will let him.
Time to find out.
Notes:
With a grateful heart to Max, @lit-yoi, for excellent beta services. Thank you!
A story like this needs an epilogue of sorts, I think. Then we're done. Thank you so much for reading.

Sunday Six - Silverlight, Chapter 5
Yuuri runs a hand down the sleek silver side of the speedboat Victor has chartered and can’t seem to close his mouth. “You said that we needed to talk. You said no more stuff!” He turns to point an accusing finger at Victor. “You can’t even drive this thing!”
Victor rubs the back of his neck. “Yes, well, it’s not mine. I just chartered it. And look, it’s stocked for the day. Just the two of us, alone on the water. Together. And I told you, I can drive it. I’ve been able to pilot a boat since I was a teenager.”
Yuuri puts his face in his hands, and Victor panics that maybe he should have just cancelled the entire thing and sat in bed all day, but it’s gorgeous out, the sun ablaze on the water and the wind has settled. He just wanted them to be alone, and this seemed like a better option than the hotel. He shifts from foot to foot, pulling his bottom lip with his teeth, until Yuuri just shakes his head and looks up at him with a wry smile.
“I don’t know what I expected. I want you to be yourself, and, well.” Yuuri chuckles. “Could be worse, I guess. You could have a foot fetish or something.”
Victor almost sags with relief. “Who says I don’t,” he says, and wiggles his eyebrows.
#THESE TWO I SWEAR#Victor just cannot stop being himself#But at least he'll actually listen to what Yuuri wants#while he still does what he wants#like charter expensive speedboats.
