Elissa looked across the desk at her oldest daughter, who was partially hidden behind her computer screen. “This has to do with Lucas, doesn’t it?” She asked.

“Yes.” Ana replied, glancing back at her computer screen, watching more emails fly into her inbox. 

“You’ll have a father.” Elissa began. “Kris and Cece will have a grandfather and-”

Ana cut her off. “That title is for Douxie and I to discuss.”

Elissa frowned. “But-”

Ana shook her head. “ No. I have, however, spoken to Parliament, because I’m unsure as to how this would work.”

“ You’re not going to stop me?”

Ana shook her head. Her and her siblings weren’t thrilled with the decision, but knew it wasn’t theirs to make in the end. “I- no. It’s your decision and I respect that. Anyway, when you marry Lucas, you will lose the title of ‘Her Majesty.’”

Elissa blinked at her daughter in confusion. “You’re joking.”

Ana bit her lip. “I’m not. When you marry him, you’ll stop being Her Majesty, Elissa, the Queen Dowager. The Prime Minister and I, alongside other members of Parliament, agreed that you’ll be ‘Her Royal Highness, Princess Elissa Munch, the Queen Dowager.’”

“You can’t be serious.”

“I’m just telling you what Parliament told me.” 

Elissa’s frown deepened. “Well, go back and tell Parliament that they’re wrong and don’t know what they’re talking about. There’s no precedent for them to base it off of.” 

Ana almost touched her necklace before she realized that it wasn’t there as she said, “Crown Princess Louise.” 

Elissa rolled her eyes. “She was Crown Princess. I was the Queen. There’s a distinct difference between the two.” 

Ana nodded in agreement. “Yes, there is. But Parliament chose to follow the precedent established for Crown Princess Louise.” 

“Then make them change their minds.” 

Ana scoffed. “Have you tried to change Peter Gathen’s mind about anything?” 

“He’s your ex.”

She rolled her eyes. “Yeah, and he was and is a piece of shit. There’s a reason he’s my ex.” 

Elissa glared at her. “Anastasia.”

Ana sighed and rolled her eyes again. “What? I’m almost 30 years old, married with two young children, I  think I’m allowed to curse. If you want to argue your case to them, you are more than welcome to, but I’ve done literally all I’m legally allowed to do in this case.”

Ouvindo a Sereia Mística em seu programa semanal na RCA conheci a cientista e pesquisadora chamada Elizabeth Blackburn, bióloga sagitariana de 72 anos responsável por uma descoberta que nos ensina sobre como viver aqui e agora e fonte de muita inspiração pra quem ama buscar conhecimento.

Elizabeth Blackburn, a Sereia me contou, é uma australiana nascida na Tasmânia. A Tasmânia é uma ilha-estado da Austrália e por ser geográfica e geneticamente isolada, possui fauna e floras únicas, características que despertaram a curiosidade da pequena Elizabeth. Na infância a garota costumava cantar para águas-vivas venenosas, conversar com formigas e outros seres vivos que a fascinavam. Sendo filha de médicos, a curiosidade de Elizabeth foi encorajada desde cedo. 

O que Blackburn queria entender era como funcionava a vida para além do que os nossos olhos podem ver. O interesse cresceu junto com ela ao longo dos anos e foi assim que Elizabeth resolveu se dedicar a estudar o DNA depois de se tornar Mestra em Bioquímica pela Universidade de Melbourne. Trabalhando no desenvolvimento de métodos para sequenciar o DNA utilizando RNA Blackburn finalizou seu Doutorado em 1975 na Universidade de Cambridge. Nos laboratórios de bioquímica de Cambridge ela conheceu John Sedat que viria a se tornar seu marido tempos depois. Juntos, eles seguiram para Universidade de Yale, onde Elizabeth terminou o seu pós-doutorado. Foi nesse período que Blackburn começou sua investigação sobre telômeros estudando lodo de lagoa.

Os telômeros, a cientista explica, protegem nossos cromossomos como se fossem aquelas pontas de plástico dos cadarços; ao longo da vida e de milhares de divisões celulares, essas pontinhas, os telômeros, vão se desgastando de forma inevitável e isso se reflete externamente no que chamamos de envelhecimento. Sem a proteção dos telômeros, os cromossomos não resistem - e assim a gente morre.

Lodo de lagoa é o lugar onde podemos encontrar o Tetrahymena thermophil, protozoário unicelular que possui muitos telômeros e uma particularidade que os diferencia dos telômeros dos humanos. As “pontas de cadarço” do Tetrahymena não se desgastam. Algumas podem ficar até mais longas. Qual era a diferença?

Blackburn então descobriu que os telômeros possuem uma enzima que pode repôr e até alongar os essas pontas de cadarço. E porque a Tetrahymena tem essa enzima em grande quantidade é que o lodo de lagoa é imortal. A enzima foi batizada de telomerase e essa descoberta lhe rendeu o prêmio Nobel de ciências.

O que enche Elizabeth de entusiasmo enquanto ela conta sobre sua investigação não é o reconhecimento mundial, mas sim os desdobramentos e as perguntas que nunca antes poderiam ter sido imaginadas. Provocada pela psicóloga Elissa Epel, Blackburn move a lente do seu microscópio para os humanos, se perguntando por exemplo se estresse, tristeza e depressão eram fatores que poderiam encurtar os telômeros, mexendo portanto na forma e na velocidade com a qual a gente envelhece. Os resultados dessas pesquisas foram para o livro The Telomere Effect, traduzido no Brasil como "O Segredo está nos Telômeros" e lançado pela editora Planeta.

Em 2002 Elizabeth Blackburn foi convidada para participar do Conselho Presidencial de Bioética dos EUA, na época recém-criado pelo governo Bush. No entanto, a bióloga não ficou por muito tempo, sendo demitida em 2004. A razão era a discordância no que dizia respeito a pesquisa com células-tronco, apoiada por Blackburn e rejeitada pelo Presidente Bush. A saída de Blackburn aconteceu logo após a cientista ter apresentado um relatório sobre a investigação das células-tronco. Na ocasião da sua demissão, Blackburn escreveu o artigo Bioethics and the Political Distortion of Biomedical Science (Bioética e a distorção política da ciência biomédica) onde ela afirma que “há uma sensação crescente de que a pesquisa científica - que no final das contas é definida pela busca da verdade - está sendo manipulada com fins políticos.” Na época vários especialistas em ética e cientistas comentaram sobre como esse acontecimento violava a obrigatoriedade do equilíbrio em uma organização cujo papel era informar o presidente sobre os avanços da biomedicina e suas implicações éticas. O painel do Conselho foi então renovado, adicionando cientistas que compartilhavam a mesma visão do Presidente Bush.

Elizabeth Blackburn fala com paixão e entusiasmo sobre ciência e sua alegria em compartilhar descobertas é contagiante. Blackburn também é uma professora profundamente orgulhosa de suas alunas e alunos; seu laboratório hoje está localizado na UCSF Universidade da Califórnia São Francisco, nos Estados Unidos.

Perguntada pelo jornal New York Times sobre por que a Beleza é importante pra nós, Elizabeth disse que a ciência pode mostrar beleza de inúmeras formas, da simples observação das manifestações da natureza à investigação da complexa dinâmica de células, moléculas e organismos que formam a estrutura do mundo. “E não há beleza e elegância no fato de que apenas quatro nucleotídeos de DNA são padronizados para produzir a informação genética compartilhada que sustenta uma miríade de formas de vida aparentemente não relacionadas?”

Blackburn segue investigando os telômeros e seus mistérios. Por enquanto o que ela recomenda pra quem deseja cuidar bem dos seus telômeros é: alimentação saudável, vida em comunidade, cuidado com os seus afetos, meditação, diversão e prazer. No entanto a maior preocupação da cientista australiana não está nos cromossomos. Ela lembra sempre da garota que conversava e cantava para águas-vivas venenosas. Estamos instigando nossas crianças pra que no futuro elas façam perguntas que hoje nós sem sabemos que são perguntas?

Elizabeth Blackburn é uma mulher que nos inspira a buscar e amar as perguntas, a criar um futuro de solo fértil, cheio delas. A cientista que veio da Tasmânia lembra que perguntar é uma dádiva humana, um jeito que nós temos de mover o mundo para o bem. E imagino que enquanto essa sagitariana estiver em seu laboratório ainda escutaremos muitas notícias dela.

Claus feels a bit awkward around the others. Ophelia tries to make a move on him, but he'd rather play with the dogs.

Pak is just chilling. He kissed Elissa once in the past, but they're just friends now, so it's cool.
