TEAM BIRDTRESS DAY 6: SNIPER!

Sniper: the laughing owl, they’re an extinct species endemic to new zealand that was known for its cackle like call. A bird that goes extinct endemic to to where he was originally from seems quite fitting for one of the possibly last people alive that were born there. They’re also on the larger end of owls, fitting for the lanky dude, they also inhabited drier areas, and considering his home when is a very arid part of austrailia, I think it fits, especially since owls are sit and wait birds, which fits his job as a sniper. They also have superb eyesight. I really just couldn’t not make sniper an owl pretty much. It’s seems quite fitting for a man who clearly doesn’t quite belong among his home’s people and knows it to have this in the vein of his reminders that he’s different. He’s Australian, no doubt, but there’s always that bit that’ll tag along with him for the rest of his life.

Also sniper DOES get face feathers, why? Because I said so, hope that helps <3 (laughing owls have build in eyeshadow and I thought it would be funny to give sniper that and their white masks)

Next up is Pyro!

If you have suggestions for possible ideas for poses with engineer or heavy for theirs, do tell. I’m stumped with them.

An extraordinarily interesting bird, and one I picked out easily, but very hard to find images of. The 2nd link was actually my only reference for the underwing. It was rough. Sniper’s pose was easy, so I spiced it up with the fun lighting. He’s totally the sort of dude to use wings to stow himself away in any tree he doesn’t immediately succeed at climbing. Don’t pester him though. May end up with a kukri where your eye had been. I really struggled on the wing color for this. Tan and it’s associated dark browns get so tough to pick out for me and for no reason ;-;. The dappled lighting and the tree were soooo fun to do though. All the brushes I used for that are from devin Elle Kurtz’s wildflower pack. Been using them for various textures for years now.

The lack of info on this bird or special intrigue in the process make this one hard to commentate on, sorry :(

An Intro to Wealth

One of the less straightforward mechanics in Signal Hill is the Wealth mechanic, so I'd like to briefly explain how it's going to work.

Signal Hill is not concerned with exact amounts of currency. Instead, it just wants to measure how wealthy you are- what you can reasonably afford. So it takes a page out of the books of games like Blades in the Dark, and ranks your overall wealth on a scale of 0-5. Anything below your wealth level in value, you can buy with impunity. Anything at the same level? That's a big purchase.

The levels are roughly as follows...

Poverty. Even a small expense is a major purchase for you.

You can afford more small purchases, but not by much.

You can comfortably afford most things, but still need to budget.

You're pretty set for life. You can afford luxury.

Very little is enough to budge you from your position of wealth. You can afford pretty much anything.

Everything you can exchange money for in the game has a value. That value is based on the lowest level that can just barely afford it. So if you have 1 wealth, you can definitely afford to buy that 1 value jacket, but it's going to be a big expense.

If you spend over your means, your wealth will be decreased by 1. So if you decide to buy that jacket? Oops. Back down to 0 wealth. Whereas if you already had 2 wealth, that jacket isn't going to make a significant dent in your savings- but buying a fancy luxury jacket might.

So how do you increase your wealth? By doing jobs and getting paid, of course! Each job you do also has a value rating, based on the highest level of wealth that would be significantly affects by the payout. If you level is that or below, you'll go up a rank.

So if you get rich, does doing smaller jobs become worthless? Not at all. If you're out of the value range for a job, it'll simply tick up an invisible counter in the background. Once that counter reaches the same level as your wealth, your wealth will go up. So once you reach 4 wealth, you'll need to do 4 smaller jobs to get up to 5 wealth.

Opportunities for higher wealth players will start out pretty limited, as in the initial demo you'll only be able to gain 1, maybe 2 ranks of wealth, max. But as time goes on, you'll get to play with some more expensive toys, and maybe do some even bigger jobs...
