Scotland Fix of the Day: The evening was supremely quiet as the moon came up over the Callanish Stones; it was calming and settling to be there alone amongst the stones – and the spirits of the people who put them up 5,000 years ago. This religious site was central to Neolithic life on Lewis for well over 1,000 years and then fell out of use. Gradually blanket peat rose in layers around the stones until only the tops were visible. In 1857 the proprietor of Lewis, James Matheson, had workers strip away five feet of peat, revealing the chambered tomb in the center. Urquhart Castle, Loch Ness near Drumnadrochit.

Urquhart Castle overlooks Loch Ness from the rocky promontory that it dominates and upon which some famous names have set foot.

St Columba may have visited around AD 580. Adomnan, his biographer, tells of the saint’s encounter with a monster in the loch.

Urquhart has a lively history. It was one of the great castles taken by the English when Edward I invaded in 1296. The Lords of the Isles then seized the castle repeatedly in the later Middle Ages, in an effort to expand their territory into the north-east.

In the 1500s, Clan Grant was given the castle and charged with its repair and with bringing it back into use.

Urquhart Castle was garrisoned for the last time in 1689, following the exile of the Catholic King James VII, and his replacement by the Protestant monarchs William II and Mary II. In 1692, the towering gatehouse was deliberately blown up so that the castle could never again be a military stronghold. A part of the Grant Tower crashed to the ground in 1715 during a violent storm.

Today 13 February 1692 marks a bit of a different type of anniversary that has become infamous in Scotland. It's not cheerful like St Andrew's Day or Burns Night, but these famous (and infamous) moments in Scottish history are what have helped give Scotland such a vivid and deep heritage.

Craigievar Castle or the „Pink Castle“ near Alford, Aberdeenshire.

Craigievar Castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style in the 16th century. This iconic tower house is one of the best preserved and the most loved castles in Scotland. Its exterior remains virtually unchanged since William Forbes completed it in 1626.

Craigievar was the Forbes family home until the 1960s. National Trust for Scotland is now responsible for the castle.

A uniquely beautiful location. 🌊🔥🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ---- This village / museum faces the Atlantic and is located in a quiet and peaceful bay in Carloway, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, dating back to the 18th century. People in Gearrannan had to travel large distances to make a living, with for example women travelling all the way to eastern England to process fish and men from Gearrannan being found in the South Atlantic for the whaling season. 🐳 ---- In 1952, electricity replaced the oil lamps that were commonly used and in the 60s, piped water finally arrived, bringing an end to the communal laundry washing in the loch. Milk delivery was also established in 1965, so there was no need to keep a cow any longer. Blackhouses similar to these can be found all around Scotland. However, the interest of these Blackhouses is that they were still occupied until 1974, making this place one of the last inhabited blackhouse villages of this type in Scotland. Scotland Fix of the Day: Seeing Ceapabhal hill towering in the distance over the long beaches of the Isle of Harris beckons you to an historic walk in a unique Scottish Landscape. Begin by driving on down to Northton where you look out over the tidal saltings to the crofting community of An Taobh Tuath, farmhouses lining the road in traditional fashion, each croft a narrow strip of land running from the beach up the hill. Walk on out towards Ceapabhal past idyllic beaches and you'll come to Rubha na Teampaill, an ancient church built atop the ruins of an earlier broch. (The broch would be roughly 2,000 years old. The Vikings came raiding and ransacked the place in the 800's. The church you see here was rebuilt in 1528.) This is common grazing land so don't be surprised to see sheep sheltering in the church. If you are lucky you might find a crofter like Kenny MacKay out amongst the flock at lambing time. Cawdor Castle near Nairn.

Cawdor Castle dates from the late 14th century, built as a private fortress by the Thanes of Cawdor. An ancient medieval tower built around the legendary holly tree.

The name of Cawdor still connects the castle to Shakespeare's play Macbeth. The truth is, Cawdor Castle was not built until the late 14th century, making it impossible for King Duncan to have lost any blood or indeed Lady Macbeth much sleep in this particular house.
