Scotland Fix of the Day: The Ring Of Brodgar looks good under a brooding sky. And on our recent visit the heather was beautiful at this Orkney landmark. A relief, too, to see that recent efforts by the National Trust to limit foot traffic has been going well and we were once again able to walk the inner path close to the stones. If you go be aware that they are being flexible with access and when foot traffic gets too heavy (big cruise ships landing) they can optionally limit access. So it depends on all of us to be kind to this ancient Neolithic monument and be kind to NTS staff who have to make these decisions. It’s always a great experience to be there anyway. Alone, but rarely ever lonely. In society, before I left on this moto expedition, I always had friends and family around me. I was always doing something with someone. I didn’t know anyone in Europe and wondered how I would manage. How could I go from having endless social events with my circle at my fingertips and then to nothing? It was a big unanswered question that I would dive right into. I hear a lot about how travelers get homesick or feel lonely when they solo travel, but that wasn’t the case for me. I attribute it to knowing who I am, being confident in myself and accepting my light and dark. And so the transition was fine. Kind of a boring answer, but that’s the truth. There are a handful of moments where I really NEEDED my people, but you know what? New people showed up and helped me in those really hard moments. Resilience and self reliance also help a lot. Your thoughts? Could you travel 14 months by yourself on a new continent with none of your circle to help you? Neolithic Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands.

The Ring of Brodgar has never been excavated, so we don’t know its age for sure. In the absence of scientific dates, our best guess is that the main ring was constructed between 2600 and 2400 BC. The surrounding burial mounds and stone setting date from between 2500 and 1500 BC.

Unusually, the ring has a truly circular layout. Of the original 60 stones, 36 survive, ranging between 2.1m to 4.7m tall. The stone circle has a diameter of 104m, and is encircled by a rock-cut ditch, or henge, measuring 136m across, making it one of the largest and finest stone circles in the British isles.

The erecting of the stones and construction of the massive rock-cut ditch would have required considerable manpower and organisation.

Away from the madness. A uniquely beautiful location. 🌊🔥🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ---- This village / museum faces the Atlantic and is located in a quiet and peaceful bay in Carloway, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, dating back to the 18th century. People in Gearrannan had to travel large distances to make a living, with for example women travelling all the way to eastern England to process fish and men from Gearrannan being found in the South Atlantic for the whaling season. 🐳 ---- In 1952, electricity replaced the oil lamps that were commonly used and in the 60s, piped water finally arrived, bringing an end to the communal laundry washing in the loch. Milk delivery was also established in 1965, so there was no need to keep a cow any longer. Blackhouses similar to these can be found all around Scotland. However, the interest of these Blackhouses is that they were still occupied until 1974, making this place one of the last inhabited blackhouse villages of this type in Scotland.
