Downtown Roles Mod Tutorial - TS3 - Mature Gameplay Ideas

TLDR: this is a compilation/recommendation list of mods, a tutorial on how to set up NPCs, and how to tie it all together to add some mature gameplay to your save. 😈

Misukisu/Virtual Artisan had a “Downtown Roles” mod that sadly does not work anymore for the latest versions of TS3. Her mod basically allowed players to add role sims to community lots so your sims could have more NPCs to interact with, making the lots feel more alive in a mature "downtown" sort of way.

I was inspired by her mod and I want to share how you can recreate and expand her mod’s functions with Nraas Register and Arsil’s Custom Generic Role mod. Some players might already know how these mods work, but it was a new discovery for me. I didn’t know how useful role sims could be! It got the gears in my dirty mind turning.

The main purpose of this mod list/tutorial: to add role sims to community lots for your main sims to interact with, while they’re out on the town. These will be sims outside of your household. Their main “job” is to hang out at the lot. You can let the game generate new sims to fill these roles, or assign existing sims in the town to fill the roles.

Examples of role sims you can create: 

A regular patron at a dive bar for your sim to befriend or make enemies with.

A sexy single sim at a beach, gym, pool, bar or club for your sim to mingle and hook up with. 

An escort at a brothel for your sim to woohoo with (Passion mod). 

A client for your sim to sell drugs/weapons to (MonocoDoll Vile Ventures mod and Arms Dealing mod) - I have not tested this but in theory it should work. 

You can add multiple role sims on each lot. You could have a number of partygoers on a club lot/a number of escorts on a brothel lot/a number of mobsters or criminals on a warehouse lot who will always be there when your sim visits.

Why role sims?

Townies are unpredictable - you never know which lot they’ll show up on, and how long they’ll stay. Role sims will consistently be there as the supporting characters in your main sim’s story. 

Having consistent NPCs at certain locations around town can help with story-driven gameplay scenarios.

You can move a household of your own sims into town and assign them to fill various roles. See pretty NPCs around town!

If you let the game generate new sims for the roles, then it saves you the hassle of setting up new households yourself. You can always edit them later in CAS.

Limitations: 

According to Arsil, it seems like sims who are already employed (such as most townies) will be removed from their jobs if they are assigned to be role sims. So I would avoid using any employed townies for this unless you are ok with that. Use unemployed residents instead.

I believe the role sim cannot leave the lot during the designated work hours. Your sim cannot form a group with them and go to another venue. However, you can invite the sim over or hang out afterwards from the relationship panel.

Mods Needed:

Nraas Master Controller + Integration Module

Nraas Register

Arsil‘s Custom Generic Role mod (both the floor marker and the desk)

Passion (if you want your sim to be able to have sex with the role sims on the lot or have the role sims dance on the stripper pole) 

MonocoDoll’s Vile Ventures mod (if you want to create NPC clients for your sim to sell to) 

MonocoDoll’s Arms Dealing mod (if you want to create NPC clients for your sim to sell to) 

How to Set Up: 

Step 1: Install the mods listed above. Then, open the save file you want to add some downtown sleaze to. 

Step 2: Find a community lot you want to add role sims to. This could be a bar, nightclub, brothel/motel/strip club, a run-down warehouse or block of buildings, casino, etc. I have downloaded many lots from Flora2 at ModtheSims and @simsmidgen here on Tumblr that fit the gritty urban vibe.  

Step 3: Enter Build/Buy mode. You can do this from Live mode. 

Press Ctrl + Shift + C, enter this cheat: testingcheatsenabled true 

Press the Shift key and click on the ground of the community lot. 

Click on “Build on this lot”. 

You can also enter Edit Town mode to renovate the community lot. 

Step 4: Place Arsil’s Custom Generic Role floor marker or desk on the lot. Place one for each role sim you want to create. They are located in Build Mode -> Community Objects -> Misc. If the desk looks out of place, use the floor marker instead. 

Step 5: In Live mode, click on the object -> Settings to set:

The name of the role (clubgoer/stripper/escort/mobster/etc.) 

The “work” hours the sim will be on the lot for 

The days off 

The motives to freeze or not (I recommend freezing all the motives to avoid interactions being interrupted/sims complaining due to low motives) 

If the sim you want to assign to the role already lives in town, click on the object -> Nraas -> Register -> Select -> Choose criteria -> select the sim from the list. I would avoid choosing any employed townies as they may lose their job when switching to this role. Choose unemployed residents to avoid conflicts.

Remove assigned roles: click on the object to remove the sim from the role.

Step 6: In Live mode, click on City Hall -> Nraas -> Register

Allow immigration: choose whether you want new sims to be moved into town to take the roles (enable this if you want the game to generate new sims for the roles) 

Allow immigration = False: if you set this option to false, then a new option called "Find Empty Roles" should appear. You can then assign any sim to the role object you placed, from City Hall.

Allow resident assignment: choose whether you want existing unemployed townies to be randomly assigned to fill the roles (I recommend to disable this. I had Buster Clavell show up to work at my strip club. NO!)

Pay per hour: I'm not sure how to adjust the pay for each custom role but you can just leave it at the default or change it globally

Remove roles: click on the object to remove the sim from the role, or click on City Hall -> Nraas -> Register -> Global Roles -> Remove by sim

Step 7: In Live mode, give the game some time to generate the role sims. Visit the community lot and have a look at your new role sims. The role sims should autonomously interact with other sims and objects on the lot. Using Nraas Master Controller, you can take the sim into CAS to give them a makeover, edit their traits, or replace them with a sim from your sim bin. 

Step 8: Make your sim interact with the shiny new role sims and play out the storylines you always wished were possible. Public hookups, functioning brothels, selling drugs and guns - this is what The Sims 3 was made for, baby!!! 

Related Mods:

Arsil’s Exotic Dancer Stage - if you have a club community lot, you can use this mod to hire dancers. You can use role sims to add other NPCs to the club such as guests, shady business sims, or non-dancer sex workers. 

Nraas Relativity - this handy mod can slow down the speed of time so your sim can spend more time doing their "activities"

Nraas Woohooer - if you don’t want the explicit sex animations from Passion, you could use this mod instead to provide more woohoo options. 

Passion - for brothels/strip clubs, this mod will add sex animations and the ability to have role sims dance on the stripper pole. 

MonocoDoll’s Vile Ventures mod and Arms Dealing mod - you can use role sims to create more clients for your sim to sell drugs and weapons to, like different individuals/gangs/mobs. You could have different clients hanging out at different spots in the city. 

LazyDuchess Lot Population - this mod populates community lots with townies, and they can interact with the role sims you’ve created. 

Service Sims Out on the Town - this pushes service sims to visit community lots, to add even more variety to your crowds.

Oh boy, the first long block of text I am mandatorily obliged to read for the sake of this reread.

I know that it's a parody, a joke both for the magazine writers and the author themselves, but this dude should be fired. You know, a GOOD reviewer would try to leave their confort zone and be curious of any kind a video genre. I like simulation, point n click adventures, puzzles, and action adventure games. Indies are the best! But you know what? I get interested by horror, rogue-like, turn-based strategy, first person shooters, heck I even played GTA and watched a bit of Yakuza. But that's not my favourite thing. And despite it all, I learned to be at least a minimum intrigued by other genre. So while it's fiction, it's shameful and disappointing that this dude played like, 5-10 minutes at the very most of Sburb and decided that it was lame and not worth his time.

His reason?

Because he didn't get to destroy stuff. Not only it's dumb and unrealistic to expect every single game to have destruction as part of the gameplay, if not the main gimmick if his attitude is to be trusted, but his impatience turned on him. Because you get to destroy things. TT did it (on purpose), GG did it (by accident). And he could get what he wanted if he didn't judge the book, rather the game here, by its cover and continued to play with his friend at Sburb.

Item is a pict-capture device, monochromatic,photogram,manual. Very early type, using photographic plates. Metal, wood, and rubber construction. Arcane Machine Spirit.

Words “Goulston Street” etched with dull blade/edge of metal tool in precisely eleven locations scattered around the surface of the device.

There is a mounting point for a tripod; the tripod is missing.

Remarkable condition, otherwise.

OBSERVED DEVIANCE:

Subject appears to function as a standard archaic pict-capture machine. However, upon use as such, images developed using Subject are imprinted with hand scrawled graffiti that reads as follows, unaltered:

“The Juwes are the men who will not be blamed for nothing.”

This graffito/inscription/epigraphy appears to have been taken from another photograph, a sort of layering. Writing in primitive pigment, ink, or painting. Handwriting style hurried, frenetic. Likely male hand, human. Does not correspond in any way to words “Goulston Street” carved on exterior of device casing. Writers of the two are different individuals, in our estimation.

A) This was initially believed to be a problem within the inner glass/silicate/ reflective lenses, but replacing these portions of Subject did nothing to appease the Machine Spirit.

B) Acolytes removed each part still present within Subject and replaced them with replicated pieces of the originals. These did nothing to change presence of graffito/inscription/epigraphy.

C) Acolytes attempted replacement of parts with new designs intended to serve same role, accommodate archaeotech design. In no instance did this have any effect upon the presence of graffito/inscription/epigraphy.

Indeed, in all cases, when at least one portion of the original device was present, no matter how insignificant (connective screws, lense caps, etc.), the same graffito/inscriptive/epigraphy appears.

Meaning/Intent/Purpose unclear. Preservation/Archive/Isolation recommended.

Folk culture is culture produced & practiced by the folk i.e. common people vs. highly educated, wealthy, and/or powerful elites. There are three categories of folk culture:

dvoeverie (dwoy-uh-VAIR-ee-uh) “double faith”: the interweaving of pre-Christian and Christian elements in the belief/practice of the Russian peasant.

Russia experienced neither the intellectual upheaval of the Renaissance nor the religious purge of the Reformation. The peasant lived in the Middle Ages through the 19th century (G.P. Fedotov, The Russian Religious Mind).

Over the centuries, ancient beliefs & rituals acquired many additional layers, and it’s often difficult to determine what is a later addition vs. what is truly ancient. One thing is certain: the Russian pagan and his 19th century descendant were both farmers whose primary concerns were fertility and bounty.

I. HOLIDAYS

After Russia’s baptism, the timing of the ancient holidays corresponded to that of major liturgical feasts. The religious aspects of these holidays were confined mainly to church attendance + processions with icons & holy water; most of the festivities took place in the village and displayed an almost total absence of Christian motifs.

Yuletide (Sviatki, Koliada) = Christmas to Epiphany

A. The singing of ritual songs (koliadki) - often sung on Christmas Eve by bands of costumed singers moving from household to household - contained invocations to “Koliada” (a personification of the season), praise of family members, wishes for a bountiful harvest and an increase in livestock, requests for handouts, and (sometimes) a threat in case of refusal - handouts came in the form of little livestock pastries (korovki, which looked like cows; kozuli, which looked like goats)

B. processions w/ people masked as horses, bulls, or goats

C. mock funerals, usually involving carrying someone who pretended to be dead into the house and lamenting him in the midst of general laughter, but sometimes they used a real corpse

D. ritual foods - kut’ia, whole grain porridge (traditional on Christmas Eve) - pork, served at the New Year

E. divinations at the New Year, primarily young girls wishing to know if they would marry in the coming year

F. During the Yuletide season, peasants lit bonfires and invited their dead ancestors to warm themselves, though by the 19th century this custom was not widespread.

Shrovetide (Maslenitsa) = the 8th week before Easter

A. Carnival season, a time to be rowdy and gluttonous

B. Entertainments included sliding, horse racing, fist fighting, and mock battles

C. signature food was bliny (pancakes)

D. A straw effigy names “Maslenitsa” was invoked and welcomed at the beginning of the holiday, and at its end they took it to a field outside the village and burned it.

E. A funeral meal was held in the cemetery amidst wailing and laughter; some food was left for the deceased.

F. A number of rituals were connected with the returning sun, such as: - lighting bonfires - circling the village on horseback carrying a torch - pushing a wheel that contained a pole with a flaming torch around the village

What Do Yuletide & Shrovetide Have In Common?

A. Their timing is dependent on the solar cycle. B. Bonfires are central to the celebrations. C. Fire has also been used for ritual purification and the expulsion of spirits that could cause illness or harm the future harvest. D. Both holidays are characterized by excessive eating & drinking, understood as expressions of the ancient magical principle “like produces like.” E. The folk agricultural calendar placed the beginning of the year near the winter solstice, but the Russian civil calendar (until 1348) reckoned the New Year from March. Thus, both holidays held “the magic of the first day.” F. fertility motifs (Yuletide’s eroticized animalistic procession; Shrovetide’s obscene behavior & ribaldry) G. funereal motifs - kut’ia was a food characteristic of funeral meals, which gave Christmas Eve the aura of a repast for the dead - At the same time, the whole grains highlighted the meaning of the seed as the mysterious container of new life. - The first Shrovetide bliny was sometimes presented as an offering to a dead ancestor, and bliny were among the foods taken to the cemetery.

Shorter Holidays between Shrovetide & Trinity Week:

1. “Welcoming of Spring” became a children’s holiday by the 19th century. Pastries in the shape of birds are baked, once a magical attempt to ensure the return of birds and the warmth they signaled.

2. Palm “Pussy Willow” Sunday: pussy willows are one of the earliest forms of spring vegetation; thus, they were perceived to have special protective & productive powers. They were (and are) blessed in church.

3. Holy “Clean” Thursday: - primary element was ritual ablution in preparation for spring fieldwork - purification by washing in water drawn before sunrise, and (in some areas) by fumigation with juniper smoke - on this day, peasants prepared the salt. - preparations for Easter took place: the house and yard were cleaned, eggs were decorated, and some ritual foods were baked. - in some places, it was customary to make magic protective rings around farmsteads by circling them with an icon or sweeping around them three times. This ritual was intended to prevent harassment by evil spirits & illnesses.

4. St. George’s Day: Throughout Great Russia, this was the first day of driving the cattle out to pasture (after blessing them and switching them with the pussy willows blessed on Palm Sunday). The cattle were also fed special loaves (prepared on Holy Thursday) to protect them from unclean spirits. In some places, peasants baked kozuli, a magical encouragement towards the multiplication & protection of the herd.

5. Radunitsa (Tuesday of St. Thomas Week): - ancient holiday celebrating dead ancestors - censured repeatedly in medieval sermons & chronicles for its “ribald nature.” - ritual feasting & wailing in the cemetery, leaving gifts of eggs for the deceased

Trinity (Rusal’naia) Week = the week preceding Trinity Sunday

- also called Green Yuletide or Zelenye sviatki - Thursday of this week (semik) was the day of funeral services for those who had not yet received a proper burial. - Peasants decorated their houses inside and out with birch branches, and they selected one particular birch tree to garland & embellish. It was usually left in the forest. - This tree served as a focal point for the girls’ songs, circle dances (khorovody), and vows of eternal friendship. - In some places, the ceremonies were terminated by throwing the tree into the local river or pond, sometimes in female dress. - Girls wove garlands of birch branches, and on Trinity Sunday threw them into a river for divinatory purposes; possible outcomes seem to have been “wed or die.” - An important part of Trinity Week was the welcoming and later banishing of the rusalka, a female spirit who was believed to leave the water for the fields & forests at this time. These rites often involved making a doll that was ritually torn apart in the grain fields at the end of the festivities.

Ivan Kupala Night = John the Baptist’s Day

- Midsummer; peak vegetation - primary activity is lighting bonfires & jumping through them - the fire had to be “new” (obtained by friction) rather than propagated from an existing fire, and this underscores its purifying significance - A tree would be decorated, placed in the middle of the festival grounds, and ritually destroyed at the end (similar to Trinity Week). - A doll or scarecrow was named for the holiday and ritually destroyed (burned, drowned, or torn apart) at the end. Mock funerals were held for the effigy. - Ritual bathing took place, based on the belief that the sun imbued the waters with a special power on this day. - Grasses and dew were gathered for medicine and/or spells. It was believed that on this day, a miraculous fern bloomed with fiery brilliance somewhere deep in the forest, indicating the location of buried treasure.

Harvest Festival

- particular attention devoted to first & last sheaves - a little patch of grain would be left uncut, standing in the field. It was decorated with ribbon and offered bread & salt, the traditional symbols of hospitality. It was bent to the ground in a rite known as “the curling of the beard.” - With the harvest, the yearly cycle of agricultural holidays ended. The peasants turned their attention to winter work, village marriages, and concerns about next year’s harvest.

Thoughts on Worldbuilding: Storytelling with Geography: Lunar Lakes

So I've been thinking about worldbuilding for awhile, and one of the things that I like about certain worlds is that they tell a story with their geography. I think Lunar Lakes is one of these worlds.

This is going to draw from James C. Scott's The Art of Not Being Governed and the concept of Zomia

So one of the central concepts behind Zomia and The Art is the idea that not everybody wants to be a part of centralized governments or nation-states.

Traditionally, most academic fields have held that as societies centralize around agricultural centers that evolve into urban centers, they draw everybody to them through some kind of unexplained magnetism as they gradually expand. It's usually held that this is because the centralizing power of agriculture allows for population booms not supported by hunting-and-gathering. At least one philosopher <cough> Daniel Quinn <cough>1 this is a result of these populations controlling access to food. Not just surpluses of food, but access to food at all, forcing those within their borders to join the system or die.

This idea that agricultural societies are somehow fundamentally better. We see this reflected in different cultural evolution models (all of which are horribly racist but still manage to hang on in weird places, particularly developmental models). As such, the shift from hunting-and-gathering to sedentary agriculture tends to be heralded as a good thing in most history text books and is pretty much always seen as a step towards "modernization.2" But what if you don't want that? What if you have zero interest in joining the agricultural community and implied state control?3 What options do you have then?

You, then, may be interested in Zomia or one of the other extra-territorial spaces that function similarly.

So what is Zomia? Zomia encompasses a large territory that ranges across Southeast Asia up into Tibet. Its primary defining feature is its rugged terrain and various populations that have no interest in different state-sponsored "civilizing" projects. While different agricultural centers expand outward to fill the lowland regions seeking to bully those they encounter along the way into joining, various people along the way say "f*ck it" and go up into the mountains. Why? Because the rugged terrain makes it harder for their valley-based neighbors to control them while providing plenty of hiding places push back against their expansion.

Agriculture tends to lock people into place and makes them easier to control, therefore nation-states interested in keeping track of large populations have a vested interest in convincing people to farm. Buggering off into the mountains offsets this. Agriculture isn't necessarily harder in these mountainous areas4, but you do have different crops as a result of altitudinal zonation and a fair amount of people choose to engage in animal husbandry instead because the high altitudes impact calorie consumption as your body spends more energy keeping you warm.

This impacts cultures in these regions as well. People may choose to define themselves in opposition to the lowland culture they are avoiding. They may hybridize with cultures already in the mountains, create new languages, or define themselves by the fact they are there for political or semi-political reasons and expressly avoiding the control of an outside party, even if that outside party is the nation-state they are legally considered a part of. There is also a tendency of these cultures to discard literacy for orality, in part because orality is easier to carry around and in part because it marks them as Other compared to their lowland counterparts. It also gives you a since of control over your culture itself, as orality can't be shared unless you want it to whereas almost anyone can learn a writing system and open a book.

So what's this got to do with Lunar Lakes? Let's look at LL more closely, shall we?

The most densely developed part of Lunar Lakes is easily this "downtown" district in the lowlands region. This area contains most of the community lots for the world, and, most tellingly, City Hall and the Perigee, which we're told in the original blurb brought the (human) sims to Lunar Lakes to begin with.

There is a little bleed over of rabbitholes from the city center onto the Rim, a slightly elevated area just above it, but these are no where near as "mountainous" as the craters we'll get to in a minute.

Another defining feature of the lowland central area are these canals. As these canals do not extend to a beach or other waterway, they can't be for trade, thereby lending themselves to the idea that they are intended for agricultural uses. They could, of course, predate the colony, but that doesn't change the intent.

On the backside of the craters, we have the Crystal Mine, the Outpost, and the Depot. We're told in the original backstory blurb for the world on the Store page that the residents had to harness the crystals to to make their colony sustainable, but it feels abandoned now. Given the importance of the mine in the early days of the colony, it makes sense they'd have a transport depot here for the workers and an outpost, possibly for the military, to protect it, especially if the world was inhabited and the indigenous people wanted nothing to do with them or actively apposed them.

Which brings us finally to the craters themselves. Here's where Zomia comes in. If Lunar Lakes was inhabited and if the native population had no interest in joining the colonists or being exploited by them, where would they go? The craters, of course! This would also hold true for anyone who didn't want to fall in line with the colonial leadership among the human sims themselves. We know the Louie family, for example, had to move to the craters after they were exiled by Patricia Cross, the current colonial leader. It therefore stands to reason that, even if the people who live here are colonists, this is where they are expected to go if they are exiled or want to get away from the political milieu of the central powers in the downtown district.

And, of course, architecturally, this is where we got those distinctive mushroom houses, which again, suggests an alternative development of this region compared to the lowlands even if the people here are exiled colonists, deviants, etc.

Regardless, we end up with a setting that is rife for internal worldbuilding and storytelling based on its geography. If you add an alien population seeking to escape SimEarth colonization by fleeing to the craters, it establishes a political backdrop for stories, making the world feel more lived in and providing a ready-made backstory. This is one of the things I think is drastically missing in the Sims 4 with their itty-bitty neighborhoods and lack of connecting spaces.

Anyways, these are the things I think about when worldbuilding myself. What story does my world tell geographically? Does it have a built in backstory represented by its geography? Are the different regions/neighborhoods connected in a way that makes cohesive sense? Are their other worlds you think do a good job of storytelling with their designs?

If you build worlds, do you take into account the storytelling potential of your geography? Why or why not? If you play in worlds like Lunar Lakes, does the geography inform your storytelling? Does it help build a metadiscourse around your game? Are there other worlds that inspire your gameplay with their layouts?

1) This is not meant as an endorsement of all of Quinn's arguments; he's got a weird overpopulation theory built into his writing that's a little too close to Malthusian for my liking, but I'm not one to throw out the baby with the bathwater, as it were.

2) Ever notice how "modernization" and "development" are always fundamentally anchored in how Europe moved from feudalism to imperialism to democracy etc.? Yeah, that's the remnants of that "cultural evolution" model I'm talking about. "You're not successful until you look like us!" "Take these developmental loans from the World Bank or the IMF! We promise the strings attached are for your benefit too!" "What do you mean you want to skip industrialization and natural resource extraction and invest in your environment, happiness, and long-term sustainability? You'll never be like us that way! You're a failed state! Ignore the coup in the background we swear we had nothing to do with!"

3) This is the section that was edited after @nornities pointed out that it could be read to imply that non-agricultural societies don't have taxes, class warfare, epidemics, subjugation, slavery, conscription, etc. That was not the intention, although it is clearly stated in Scott's original work that he considers these and other negative societal effects to be the direct result of such "civilizing projects." It was not my intent to perpetuate that idea as these things do happen in non-agricultural societies, so I have changed the original wording. Thank you, @nornities

4) I also forgot to mention the clear exception to this: the Incan Empire. Unlike most empire models, the Inca engaged in a top-down society (literally) that was based in the mountains and expanded downward and outward over time. They were predated by two earlier Andean civilizations.
