It is so challenging when our children want to give up on their education. We don’t understand why. When we were their age it wasn’t even an option. Our parents would have raged holy war against us. We are. Ow in different times and have to play the game with the rules we have. So when we are challenged by our teens that want to throw in the towel on school. Try these 3 things. #1 ask yourself what you fear most about them quitting school and find a way to make peace with it because you can’t control it and you deserve a break. #2 ask them what their plans are. Speak to them as an adult ther is going to have responsibilities when they leave school. Children attend school. Children that quit school are asking to be adults very early. Speak to that point. #3 take them to a fast food joint and have lunch and let them fill out an application. Watch the people flipping burgers and cleaning tables. Then explain to them cost of living and that their cell phone bill will require them to work a half a day here sweating and flipping burgers. This is a reality check. Do this all with a happy face and know you are guiding and mentoring them to become functioning and responsible adults. You can love them or control them but you can’t do both. These days our children have so much working against them. Which make them feel small, unworthy and useless. Do you want to help your children build self-confidence and have a higher self-esteem? I knew you would so here are 3 tips to get you going. #1 if you need an app installed on your phone. Ask them to do it for you. They will feel empowered. #2 if you have a question about something broken around the house or any general question ask them for their advice and let them go ask google and give you the answer. Are you stalking your children? Did your parents do the same thing to you? What is the reason? Do you not trust them? What are you afraid of? They don’t understand your fear of the world and you whatever you say won’t make them understand it. How do you think they feel when you are constantly on their back? How did you feel when your parents did that to you? Untrusted, unworthy, not good enough? What about if you tried for a week to give them some space. Take a break from stalkerville. Let them experience life without you breathing down their neck. Let’s be honest...They are going to do whatever they want to do anyway but when we are constant watching them it makes them want to make that poor choice to piss us off. Our children are observers of everything around them. They are passengers along for the ride to learn, explore and experience life as we see it and play their role as our students. As parents...our core responsibilities are to guide, mentor and love them. To be that role model that shows them empathy, compassion, tenderness, resilience, forgiveness and love towards everyone in our lives. As they see us maneuver our world they are constantly making notes in their mental journal...committing these moments and experiences to their memory so as to be used at a later point in time. They have no other reference point than what they see in us. So be aware of the choices you make while you are going about life. Choose love over hate, choose empathy over judgement, kindness of betrayal and good over bad. Because one day we will become their students and what they teach us can be very profound and enlightening if we live our lives with an open heart, mind and soul. When you don’t think they are paying attention they are eyes and ears wide open. So be that role model for them and they will become a role model for possibly their children for generations to come. That is how we can change this world and make it a better place...one model at a time. We have so much patience when our children our babies. They crap on us, they don’t sleep and sometimes won’t eat. And we suck it up. Then as soon as they start caring for themselves we start taking them for granted. We get comfortable with a little freedom and maybe can see the light at the end of the tunnel. That is when we fail as parents because we go into auto pilot parenting. When we do this any little blip on our radar screens throws our world into a tailspin. Any little problem our behavioral challenge our children exhibit we blow a gasket because we want things to be getting easier. Another failure. So we need to take our parenting off auto pilot and start going with the flow. As our children turn into teens they need us to have more Patience with them because they are learning about life. If we can do that. Just maybe they will help us out a little by being more patient with us when our lives feel like they are imploding. So in the words of Axel Rose. “All we need is a little patience”. When your child starts vaping what can you do? Not many options here. You can either lecture them and have an argument and they will hate you and still vape. Or you can speak with them let them know how worried you are about their choice, their health and love them. This way if they still choose to vape they will still love you. When we try to control our children it usually pushes them further into the unwanted behaviors. Remember when you were a teen and maybe smoked? No difference here. What would you have needed to hear to make you quit? So understand their world and parent from there. We can’t push our kids to be stronger by enforcing them to be courageous. We need to be in teaching and modeling mode. We must show them how we are courageous in our lives and allow them to see first hand as we conquer our own fears. That is an opportunity to teach not push.
