Shri Utpaladeva celebrates the inner meaning of SHIVA RATRI, *with* Shri Kshemaraja's incredible interpretation, trans. by CT for the first time.

“When the sun and moon have set together, along with all of their combined light, that unique Night of Shiva ('Sivaratri') arises with a luminescence that cascades forth as the radiant light of one’s very own being.” -Shri Utpaladeva, verse 4.22 of his 'Garland of Hymns' to Shiva,' 10th century Kashmir.

‘By ‘That unique Night of Śiva’ [Śrī Utpaladeva means] the inner experience of the [sacred event known to the] world – the ‘night’ which [equates to] the state of complete immersion into Śiva; because it completely destroys the light of delusion, it is similar to the night [of the śivarātrī night itself]. What kind of night is this? It is most similar to the radiance of the first manifestation of the sprout [of Kuṇḍalinī, i.e. the new moon, āmavāsyā] that follows when the sun, or the exhalation, and the emanations of the moon, i.e. inhalations, have ‘gone to set together’ [via the suṣumnā, having ascended into the crown lotus]. Just as the [external] sun [in the sky] is extinguished [at dusk]. | From the moon shines forth the Creator, who is one with the the light as it shines forth, who remains imbued as the source essence of the [moonlight of pure consciousness] that unites all expressions of objective reality within its radiance.”
