Titan History: Tiamat

Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.

For today's communication, we find ourselves once more turning to the most recent Titan crisis, dedicating today's instalment of "Titan History" to a beast that has many people talking; the queen of the depths, Tiamat.

Designated as "Titan 019" in Monarch's database, Tiamat was a colossal sea serpent, vibrant coloured scales and a bioluminescent frill granting her an almost hypnotising appearance as she cuts through the water. Those who studied her in Monarch Outpost 53 note her impressive ability to mimic the sounds of human voices. Though incapable of perfectly replicating speech, many of the outpost's staff recount being haunted by the sounds of her "Titansong".

The full extent of her abilities show Tiamat to be a true force of nature. She can blind opponents with a yellow phosphorus ink that manifests as a form of acidic breath, she possesses electrogenic cells that can manipulate electrical energy to such an extent that her storms can boil the ocean and generate steam trails that can be seen from space. Her underwater superiority rivals even that of Godzilla, able to generate maelstroms capable of dragging other Titans to the depths.

Prior to her final encounter with Godzilla, Tiamat was also shown to be capable of absorbing and generating massive amounts of energy through a natural radiation hotspot in the Arctic Circle, achieving an "evolved" state similar to what Godzilla would go on to gain for himself prior to engaging the Skar King and Shimo.

As is the case with most Titans on record, little is known about what Tiamat may have been doing prior to her containment by Monarch and awakening in 2019. It is known that, at some stage, Tiamat claimed a subterranean lair within the Hollow Earth as her domain, killing its previous occupant (an apparent ancestor to Kong), as well as various other Titans that attempted to rob her of what was her's. Drone exploration into this lair revealed a Titan graveyard of those likely slain by Tiamat, a Titanus Jinshin-Mushi Prime scattered among the remains was of particular note to Monarch.

At some stage, Tiamat would temporarily vacate this lair and make her way to Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she would later be contained by Monarch for further study.

Tiamat was part of the Titan legion awakened by Monster Zero in 2019, later pacified by the ORCA. Like most, she was not present for Godzilla's claim as Alpha Titan. She returned soon after to the lair she had claimed. Toward the end of 2020, Godzilla entered the Hollow Earth and, while Monarch are uncertain of the exact details, presumably fought with Tiamat over possession of the lair. As Tiamat was later observed leaving the Hollow Earth in search of a new home, it is clear Godzilla had emerged victorious.

Sometime before 2027, Tiamat would claim a natural radiation hotspot in the Arctic Circle, the largest known source on the planet, as her domain, resting within a particular glacier absorbing energy and building up her strength.

In 2027, while absorbing radiation to build his own strength for the coming conflict with the Skar King and Shimo, Godzilla hunted down Tiamat to her Arctic domain and attacked the glacier she was resting within to draw her out. Following a brief battle where both Titans seemed evenly matched, Godzilla fired a blast of atomic breath that tore through Tiamat's body and dismembered her. Godzilla then retreated into the glacier himself as Tiamat's remains floated to the surface.

And there you go! Following news of her death, some in the public have expressed outcry over Godzilla's decision to kill her, noting that it seemed to break his pattern of only killing those who were an immediate threat to the balance of nature, and positing that Tiamat was simply keeping to herself and not being a threat.

While we cannot speculate how Godzilla truly thinks, what's done is ultimately done. Much as is the case with Scylla, this is all we can report on Tiamat unless either new findings come up or another of her species emerge.

Have you been able to see GxK yet? I def think you'll like it if you haven't seen it already.

Saw it yesterday, enjoyed it a lot! They finally removed all the most annoying characters from King of the Monsters and just kept the bearable ones from Godzilla vs Kong, but also let long stretches of the movie be completely without dialogue, which I thought was really cool.

The same complaints I had about GvK are still there, in that it does get a bit gratuitous and the sci-fi Hollow Earth setting where everything is giant-sized does take away from the epic scale of the kaiju (something Godzilla 2014 committed so hard to), along with making them all run at close to normal-looking speed.

But I enjoyed it! Trapper and Bernie are actually an entertaining pair and if these two had been in King of the Monsters rather than those two scientist guys who tried to be funny, the movie would have had way more mass appeal. I also think Legendary are getting better with their original kaiju designs; M.U.T.O looked terrible back in 2014 compared to Godzilla, but Tiamat, Skar King, and Shimo are all pretty good designs. Not quite Toho's level of character design, but pretty good! Tiamat for all her 20 seconds of screentime looked gorgeous.

Also, I just wanna say as a Godzilla Unleashed fan, I liked Shimo because she was essentially Legendary's take on Krystallak (like how Tiamat was a remix of Toho's Manda) and I'm really into the concept of a psionic crystal monster.

Also, can I say that I like how the kaiju get intros now? Godzilla and Kong don't need them, but Tiamat having a narrated secret dossier intro while Skar King and Shimo were introduced via a wall mural that spoke of them in legend was really fun.

In general I really like that the Legendary movies lean into the kaiju being legendary (lol) beings rather than monsters that popped up out of nowhere. The best thing King of the Monsters did was tie in Ghidorah and Godzilla's backstory into world mythology: ancient peoples saw an alien destroyer descend from space with three heads and bat-like wings, and so multiple cultures throughout the world had an image of evil inspired by Ghidorah, from Satan's bat wings to virtually all malevolent dragons.

Those details make the world feel more lived in by the kaiju (which they really need because let me tell you, the sci-fi worldbuilding also makes zero sense lmao), and also tie back into the original themes of giant monster movies in general: being reminders that mankind for all their technological superiority, is not above nature.

That being said, with Mothra making her comeback, I'm hoping that means Toho will be letting Legendary use their whole roster again instead of just Godzilla. Shimo was cool, but I really want new audiences to meet Gigan.

Just got back from Godzilla X Kong!

First off, just a warning, there are some intense scenes of strobing lights and sound so be prepared if you have epilepsy. Likewise, it is a constant stream of loud sounds and colors with many fast cuts and no room to breath, which means my autistic ass got extremely overstimulated in the IMAX theater and had to cover my eyes and plug my ears at times to calm myself down, so be prepared for that too.

Now, on to my rambly and mildly spoilery first impressions under the cut.

Like I said, this movie has absolutely zero room to breathe. They sliced away every millisecond they could to keep the runtime below two hours and it translates into a film that just not shut up. It's like every scene lasts 30 seconds, even the kaiju battles are so quickly cut that it feels like this gif:

That being said, the actual story when you think about it, before the searing stream of action melts your brain, is very good. It's about how your home is your family, and that's paralleled in both Kong's story and the human story. Jia and her mom are the heart of the film and they've easily become some of my favorite human characters in the Monsterverse.

I'm not sure how to articulate my thoughts the best, so I guess I'll just talk about each of the kaiju and how I felt about them.

Despite getting top billing, Godzilla just straight up does not matter in this movie. It's %100 Kong's story, Godzilla really only matters at the end when he joins up for the big finale fight and even then it kind of feels like Kong had this all handled. In fact, don't kill me, but Godzilla being here just makes the movie worse. Time given to Godzilla takes away time from Kong's story, which as I said feels really rushed. If anything Goji is a fucking asshole, he goes around slaughtering Titans that're just minding their business. What happened to balancing nature? You're going to kill some kaiju peacefully sleeping in the arctic because you want to glow pink now? BTW the power up is completely pointless, he doesn't even seem to do it for any good reason he just felt like a make over I guess.

Kong on the other hand was great, literally just the main character of the movie, he's the one with the most growth and who goes through a character arc. There are some wonderful scenes far away from any humans of just him doing his own thing, having his own adventure. I'm not sure I've ever seen a kaiju movie do that besides, funny enough, the much maligned Son of Godzilla. Kong finds his people, liberates them from a cruel tyrant, and proves himself king of the apes. The scenes of him and Suko bonding are especially strong in my opinion, showing Kong as an ultimately very kind and patient beast with a big heart that he desperately wants to share even with someone who hurt him. By this point, Kong is the most developed kaiju in the series, I love him.

Mothra is in the movie. Yeah, that's about it. Her presence doesn't actually make much sense, the whole "only an Iwi from Skull Island can summon her" meanwhile she just popped out of the ground herself a few years ago to fight Ghidorah. Likewise I was disappointed that she didn't really do anything, she doesn't even have a moment with Godzilla. I thought they were all symbiotically linked and whatnot? Why didn't she join the fight in Rio? Yeah, how about this, cut Godzilla from the movie and have her be the big help at the end. The story spends so much time on summoning her, about as much time as Godzilla goes stomping around, why not have her be the support for the big battle at the end? Also she's straight up magic now, materializing out of thin air, sure. Why not?

Skar King was a fun villain, I can definitely see him becoming a fan favorite. You can kind of tell with the fandom that nobody really cares about the MUTOs or the Mamma Skullcrawler despite being in some of the most beloved Monsterverse films, and that's because they're mostly treated as animals. Ghidorah was the first one really personified and for that he was a wonderful villain that the fandom could latch on to, and Skar King has a lot of moments where his personality shines. Likewise Shimo was great too, a sort of tragic mix of a war mount and a kicked puppy. I'm excited to see how the fandom reacts to her, most of the pre-movie art I've seen makes her out to be this omega asshole but in the film she's arguably nicer that Godzilla.

Yeah, having an hour and a half to calm down, I can say I had a lot of problems with the film. Likewise though, there was also a lot to love. I think I may try to watch it again, on a standard screening next time, to form some more solid thoughts. For now though, I can hope that this movie does well, because even if I'm not the biggest fan I still want to see the Monsterverse continue.

SCARRED BUT NEVER BROKEN

Alas here is the last P bandai Inspired Gunpla and it is the Wing Gundam Skar Zero. Now I must say this thing out of all the P bandai inspired Gunpla I made is my favorite

The Skar in its name is a reference to the Gunpla's rather unique head which is from the Wing Fenice. It is also accompanied by the Angel wings from the Wing Gundam Zero EW as it is a symbol of redemption from the Scars it has experienced. For Weapons then its got Machine cannons on the Chest, Beam sabers at the back of the Wings, a Wing Shield and of course that awesome Twin Buster Rifle. It can also Transform into Neo Bird Mode if it needs a quick getaway. All in all, This Winged Angel is a fall from grace and all it wants to do is destroy the People that made it do all those horrible things in the first place

After Dark Special: Interview with Bernie Hayes

Welcome once again to Monarch: After Dark, the digital gateway between you and the organisation dedicated to understanding and navigating this troubled new world we live in.

For today, we bring to you a little extra something special. With the poll's conclusion, we will be bringing our followers the long-awaited updates on Godzilla and Kong, but in the meantime, we would like to present a special treat that we have been preparing for some time now; the long-awaited interview with Titan Truth's Bernie Hayes!

The Interview with Bernie

Before we begin, let's discuss a little about Bernie's history, as behind his aloof and off-putting personality, his is an interesting story. Joining Apex Cybernetics' ranks following his wife's death under suspicious circumstances, Bernie was determined to unlock a hidden conspiracy that would bring down the organisation once and for all, though at first even he wasn't certain of what exactly he was going to find.

In 2024, his luck would change when Godzilla unexpectedly attacked the Pensacola facility, where Bernie happened to be stationed. Taking advantage of the chaos, Bernie would sneak to an inner part of the facility and come across a large eye-like device following Godzilla destroying the wall hiding it.

Some time later, Bernie would recruit Madison Russell and her reluctant friend Josh Valentine, after Madison's concerns about Godzilla's attack were brushed aside by her father, who was caught in the publicity aftermath of the incident. Together, the trio returned to the ruined Apex facility and ventured deep into its depths, where advanced transports carrying a clutch of Skullcrawler eggs were being deployed to Apex's headquarters in Hong Kong.

While we'll cover the remainder of his story in the interview, the short version is that Bernie would go on to be instrumental in stalling Mechagodzilla at a crucial moment during its battle with Godzilla and Kong, allowing the Titans to emerge victorious. Bernie would be called upon by Monarch once more during the Skar King crisis, travelling with Monarch to the lost Hollow Earth city of Malenka.

[B.HAYES]: Hey, so, can I do the intro?

[S.RAGLIN]: I'm sorry, what?

[B.HAYES]: The intro! For, uh, for my podcast? Cuz you guys said I could record this for my podcast, and I usually do a-

[B.HAYES]: Okay, cool cool. What is up, loyal listeners? Welcome to a special episode of Titan Truth podcast, and you'll wanna be seated for this one! Today, I am hosting-

[S.RAGLIN]: Right then. So, uh, first question then, you're known for infiltrating Apex Cybernetics and doing what you could to uncover a conspiracy. What sparked that?

[B.HAYES]: Oof, no holding back there. Uh, well, it was my wife. She worked for them for a while, quit a year after G-Day. She...well, um, you know she- she died, and I found this note. Something about a- a Monarch contract for a bomb, with Apex.

[S.RAGLIN]: The Oxygen Destroyer?

[B.HAYES]: I didn't know back then. I joined up with Apex right after, cuz it just- it felt wrong, you know? Then Monster Zero happened, connected the dots...yeah. But, I had to keep going. Nobody was taking the fall for the Oxygen Destroyer, so I needed something bigger. Something that'd truly bring Apex down.

[S.RAGLIN]: I see. Well, y'know, we here at Monarch pride ourselves on the hunt for truth, it's been our main founding policy. Nobody'd fault you for wanting answers. Anyway, next question, your little team...why two teenagers? Why not go to Monarch itself?

[B.HAYES]: Nah, you guys wouldn't have listened. You were too busy trying to make excuses for Godzilla, and, well, Madison found me first. Wouldn't have been my first call, personally, but if you're gonna make the effort to find me, and prove yourself, then I'm gonna hear you out.

[S.RAGLIN]: And...how, exactly, did she prove herself?

[B.HAYES]: No tap water.

[S.RAGLIN]: I...wha- tap water?

[B.HAYES]: Yeah. Makes you docile, easy to manipulate. Her friend was definitely a tap water guy.

[S.RAGLIN]: You...oh, for fu-

[B.HAYES]: Language! Gotta watch it, or I can't monetize this.

[S.RAGLIN]: ...Right, fine. Fine. Um, okay, so, uh-

[B.HAYES]: Hey, can I ask you a question?

[S.RAGLIN]: Sure.

[B.HAYES]: Why Tumblr?

[S.RAGLIN]: What?

[B.HAYES]: You know, After Dark. Been following you guys day one, cuz you know I'm gonna be all over anything I can get straight from the Titan's mouth. And, you know, I'm sure you got a whole team, but I'd really wanna offer my suggestions cuz I noticed some of what you were saying was off, and of course you were dodging the question about aliens on the blog so-

[S.RAGLIN]: Dude, I don't write the stupid blog. I'm a media liason, I just sift through what we get sent in and make sure it's approved for the team to talk about.

[B.HAYES]: Right, okay, but like...why Tumblr? Why not, like, Twitter or Facebook? Or Spotify, cuz I could definitely hook you guys up-

[S.RAGLIN]: I really don't know. Uh, had the most appealing layout for the writing team? Less bots? I don't- I couldn't tell you why, it just is on Tumblr.

[B.HAYES]: Cool, cool. Respect it, personally.

[S.RAGLIN]: I...will pass that along. Uh, next question then, after Mechagodzilla, what was next for you?

[B.HAYES]: Well, after Mechagodzilla, it was just back to normal for me. Didn't have my Apex job anymore, but I set up a Patreon, so I could do this full-time. I did this five-part series on fireflies.

[S.RAGLIN]: ...Fireflies?

[B.HAYES]: Yeah. Full deep dive on how they're actually micro-alien organisms hiding in ships, and the government's covering it up. There's really a lot to it, like, you never see fireflies around government facilities, right? Cuz if you did, you'd see them being tinkered with and repaired before being sent back out.

[S.RAGLIN]: And you did 5 parts on that?

[B.HAYES]: Oh yeah, it's a big one. You know, I even met with a guy who took apart one of the ships to see what it was really like. Wouldn't let me see it, but, you know, if he showed that on the podcast he'd be tracked down and shot, so, I get it.

[S.RAGLIN]: Were you on anything when you did that?

Something part 8

Captain Ladd stood in shock. He didn't know who had fired the first shot, and at this point it didn't matter. Those monsters, he refused to believe they were dinosaurs, had come charging from the doors and it seemed time stood still. At least until the first gunshot. Then he watched as his men lost all training. Not that there was training for this. Some running for their lives, some frozen with fear, and others who had reacted to the initial gunshot and were just firing as many rounds as they could. It was the third option that left him in shock. The sounds of gunfire were a common thing for him. Screams were not unknown. But it was the reaction of the beasts, or rather lack thereof that caused his shock. With M240s, M16s, SAWs, and even SKARs all firing the beasts didn't seem to so much as flinch. There was no hint of blood or any type of wound on them. The static of his comms bringing him back to reality.

"All squads engage. All tanks engage, fire at will."

He looked back to see the tanks start moving, taking aim. Relief coming over him as he looked back at the monsterms before he all but shit his pants. In what had felt like a fraction of a second the 300 meters between them had turned to zero. He watched in horror as a triceratops crashed through the sandbag and concrete barriers before the horn met his stomach. Cracking his chest plate with ease before sliding through and into his stomach.

"The tanks are too late" he tried to say, instead only spewing out blood before blacking out as the horn pushed further.

The president sat in disbelief. Dinosaurs had just invaded earth. Not only invaded but attacked without warning or being provoked. Dinosaurs, was that what they truly were?

Staff members scrambled around, checking wiring connections as others checked every feed. All showing the exact same thing. Static.

"Nuke them. Let's just nuke the ship and surrounding area."

"Are you crazy? That ship is almost the size of Georgia. It covers almost the entire fucking state. All f those homes and businesses that would be lost!"

"Those are already lost. Either crushed or burned up by that ship. Nuke the area and let's be done with it."

"What about our men on the ground. They would all be lost."

The president closed his eyes and took a deep breath. The arguing was doing nothing to help and he was growing frustrated. Finally interrupting them.

"Enough! We will not be nuking the south. Because that is what it would take. We have no idea if we have any men left on the ground, how far those... things... have gone, how many may or may not be left on that ship. We would have to nuke all of Georgia and all of the surrounding states. I will not be the president that wiped out the South. Now somebody get me a satellite feed of the area!"

Ground zero somewhere near the Florida border

Corporal Hall sat at the entrance to the storm drain. Slightly rocking as he tried to catch his breath. The scene he had just witnessed flashing before his eyes even with them tightly shut. As his own breathing calmed he became aware of the muffled crying and panicked talking behind him.

He turned and looked over the people further in the tunnel. Three privates he had thrown into the drain and the small group they stumbled upon in hiding there. 2 grown men, 1 grown woman, 2 teenage boys, and a little girl. At least the civilians all had some form of high powered rifle. So they wouldn't be completely useless.

He knew it was wrong to run from a battle but he had held out as long as he could. Sending rounds down range until there was no more down range. It wasn't until those things were on top of him that he broke and ran. Stumbling upon the three lower enlisted, who had at least had the sense to not drop their weapons, and finding a place to hide. The sounds of gunfire and screams had died down. Now only the sounds of roars and stomping as he tried desperately to calm and quiet those with him.
