How is sketchnoting and graphic recording even possible?

Did you know that we…
think faster than we can listen
listen faster than people can talk
talk faster than we can draw or write
That’s why we can sketchnote!
It might feel like everything is going so fast as we sketchnote, but actually, our bodies function naturally to support the practice AND it pushes us to do it better and faster each time.
That’s why our minds wander when people talk. That’s okay! Even better when we focus and apply our listening to create sketchnotes. That space between:
Thinking/Listening » Drawing/Writing
» That’s where we are synthesizing, distilling, and deciding where to put things on the page.
Have you ever noticed how some people are "ah-mazed" by what we do and often say they can’t do it? It’s because they haven’t exercised or used that function as frequently as we do!
CONTEXT: In 2009, I suffered a head injury. Shortly after, I found sketchnoting and it helped me build up the neuro pathways in my brain. I went from being super forgetful and anxiety-ridden to having what I thought was a super brain! I truly believe that sketchnoting helped me heal.
NOTE: It’s important to recognize that some people may not be able to sketchnote because of a physical or cognitive limitations. So take care when receiving comments from your audience. Be graceful, thank them, and share information (like Ashton’s community) where they can learn more.

In My Free Time: From Israel-Hamas to "Enough" to Blogs
Last week, I published The Week’s News Through a Psychology Lens, which other than being a poster child for my award winning tortured syntax and awkward wording, was a regular blogging feature that had been kicking around in the old noggin for awhile. However, as the following week progressed and I collected articles to use in this week’s edition, I realized I wanted to share more than just the…

Graphic facilitation is all about knowing how to outline a figure or an image and where to start. If you know the basic elements that constitute a drawing, then creating virtually anything becomes possible and easier. Once you have given your internal ogre the side push and have understood the power of lines through help from our first two lessons, now it is time to focus on shapes. Lines help you form shapes, and shapes help you form a drawing – it’s as simple as that.
In Lesson #3 – Seeing the World in Shapes – we will discuss the idea of applying geometric shapes in our approach towards mastering graphic facilitation. These four basic shapes are the fundamental building blocks of any diagram and provide a structure to it – be it a drawing of an animal or a skyscraper. Knowing where to start and how to go about it is crucial, and knowing these shapes will give you a head start. Once you learn how to use these four shapes to illustrate and create visuals, you will conquer the art of visual facilitation.

Sketchnotes in my bujo!
We can see the evolution of work. Some are totally handwritten and some are a mix between digital and handwritten.
All represent things I like but I don't really know why 🤪
To come: London, New York, prehistory, the Dordogne and Agatha Christie.

Hey students, if you have a choice of presenting your information in tables or graphs, choose the graph. Want to know why: 🔽

Graphs showcase trends, relationships, and key takeaways in a format the mind grasps faster than rows and columns. When you need to drive home critical data or demonstrate complex connections, graphs speak volumes.
Focus the spotlight on what matters most. Eliminate distractions with clean axes, labels, and legends tailored to the story you want to tell. Guide the viewer's eyes towards revelations, not footnotes.
But don't abandon tables altogether. Sometimes specifics and precise figures need the clarity tables allow. Use graphs to pull out patterns and messages, then turn to tables when the raw numbers themselves hold meaning.
With intentional design, graphs grab attention and spark "Aha!" moments. Tables serve as vital references to ground insights in accuracy. Together, they become a powerful communication duo.
The right balance drives home your data-driven point quickly, clearly and credibly. Let purpose guide your mix of visuals. Whether tables or graphs, let the numbers speak.
👉Do you agree with me? Let me know in the comments.
