My top three, I’m in deep. I spent years, literal years lost in Sterek, fell into Reylo last year and am still lost in the fandom and just found the rabbit hole leading me into Dramione. These days (and nights) are mainly spent reading Reylo or Dramione, but trying to find two more that I am as invested in to round out my top five was a bit of a challenge. So below are five ships I dabble in and a fic rec in each that stands out.

Simple Math by foxxcub 

I saw Inception years ago in theaters, never imagined paring Arthur and Eames when I saw it. Then I stumbled upon this quintessential fake dating high school AU, so well written with teenage angst and quiet resignation that I can’t imagine them any other way. Also in general if you enjoy the HS AU trope, I think can be read without knowing the characters.

I never saw an episode of Stargate. I didn’t need to. This is a denial of feelings until the angst becomes unbearable love story and extremely well written.

FANFICTION world is a truly debrided, uncensored promised land, bastion of freedom and free-style writing. In this baroque puzzle, discovering a variety of gifted (and selfless) writers, that’s an utter comfort.

Ambivalent, Luxurious, Against the current, Organic, Gutsy, Dark, Gray, Transcendent, Outrageous, Extravagant... In the case of REYLOFICs the more I read the more I am tempted to explore the deep-end of this horn of plenty. But, on the journey, say nice things about those dream-machine storytellers is clearly a sane propaganda. Prodigal author without blinking, innate crack, inscrutable wizard or soft/dark underbelly... Whoever they might be, all credit to them for doing what they are doing and doing it so well. @5-cents​  Less is more. Able to write a play, a screenplay, got an eye for the (implied) obvious so as to preserve what counts. Sense of slangy imagery and naked poetry, science of dialogue, syncopated path and (film) cutting, she also has a thoughtful and mature love for the characters without give in to ease. Richer than rich, the whole thing smells like a melancholic lost perfume BUT not only... Classic and atypical at once because Style is firmly timeless.

Because Tennessee Williams, Sweaty Southern Gothic, Ben Solo is a dark horse (with a riding crop), Rey ain’t just a “Baby Doll”, Volcano Snoke deserves an Oscar (!), Awakening is not a bed of roses, Because fooling around with Tennessee Williams is highly inflammable and SHE’s the man

Candyleg - E 

Pulpfic, Black Comedy, Roman noir, Cinematic at all points, Psyche and Eros between the lines, Outlaws everywhere, Supporting roles are being treated like royalty, Ren Solo is a case study and an authentic black horse, this story has many lives as huge zebra stripes, Subliminal Scorsese and Freud at the corner

@lilia-ula​  The Holy Grail of sin. On the edge of lyricism, sophistication and decadence. If you start, you’ll be under her writing-perfusion/persuasion. This combo of Opium (or put your own fetish dish here) and Biggerthanlife-words should be felt and experienced. Beware to indelible effects! The guiltiest dose is often the best. 99% dubious Kylo Ren and an artful level of carnality that is second to none.

Because possessive-obsessive, Death and the maiden, hunter and prey, Kylo Ren always has a plan, Sith-style courtship, Epic smut, Iconic chapters, A surprise awaits Rey! (all the time too)

A post-traumatic story closely sutured with sharpness. The psychological approach is non-stop remarkable and her attention to characters, inestimable. They comes out of the blackness by carrying unfathomable feelings and wounds with them. Allusive or (most of the time) without filter, this journey into/out of the depths is utterly immersive and empathetic from the outset. Incompressible (painful) beauty. K.for King.

The Importance of Science Communication.

All scientists can help improve the public’s knowledge by using a variety of strategies to communicate their knowledge. There are many benefits in being able to communicate research. Feliu-Mojer, Director of Communication for Ciencia Puerto Rico, stated in her article about effective science communication published in the Scientific American, “When scientists are able to communicate effectively beyond their peers to broader, non-scientist audiences, it builds support for science, promotes understanding of its wider relevance to society, and encourages more informed decision-making at all levels, from government to communities to individuals”. Communication cannot be overlooked by Scientists. There are many studies that give scientists the tools they need to effectively relay their work to the public. In the most general sense, it is important to keep in mind, “…presenting information in a way that is short, simple and easy to comprehend and remember seems to offer the highest probability of success for all audiences examined” (S. L. van der Linden). Metaphors are proven to be a great way to communicate. An example is, “If 97% of engineers said that a bridge was no longer safe to cross, would you cross the bridge? 97% of scientists say that humans are causing climate change” (S.L. van der Linden). Taking the time to explain even the most basic concept to someone can make the difference in whether we will stop climate change.

If you are not the one behind the science, you can still make a difference. The best way for a non-scientist to help is to be educated. Communication among non-scientific groups can be just as important. If you want to help issue like climate change, then the first thing to do is to have a better understanding of what is happening. Scientists are constantly finding easier and better ways to communicate. YouTube has been a great tool. Start with something simple, like how the greenhouse effect works. Many people don’t know the basics of climate science. Becoming more educated can go along way. Before you know it, you will become the one communicating science to others. It is important to note that while there is a vast amount of scientific information out there, there is also information that has been manipulated and misinterpreted. Finding reliable sources can be difficult, so fact checking your information is a great idea. Education is the most important tool we have against climate change.

Science communication effects everyone. There have been improvements and setbacks, but we continue to move forward and learn from our mistakes. The most important thing is that we can move forward. The biggest setback of all will be the catastrophic impacts of our changing climate. Climate disasters will continue to strike with increasing intensity. Scientists must continue their research and do their best to communicate the science to the public. However, what happens next is up to the public. People must have the information and demand action from governments around the world. Better science communication will lead to more action.

Slow Burn … I now it’s a rather subjective distinction, I’m probably partial to “medium burn” myself, but I tried to pick out fics that focused on building the Reylo dynamic via banter, subplot, etc, before a romantic declaration or smuttville arrives.  Most of these have a lot of UST between the lines, but no smut until at least the last quarter or very end.  Hope these fit the bill you were looking for.  Enjoy!

Deep Beneath the Light by Crysania @spottytonguedog

Ben says “Yes” … to Han.  I loved everything about this concept, it’s one I have mulled over a number of times - the possibilities for Bendemption and Reylo that diverges from the father/son moment on the walkway (or even from the interrogation scene, as in @shadowlass‘s WIP Family as a Fine Art).  Han Lives, Kylo/Ben faces the conflict inside himself, truths unspoken come out and Rey takes notice.  This is the heart of the story that corporate entities couldn’t be bothered with telling us, bc it would seem “naive”.  (Sorry, I’m still bitter from December).  At any rate, this is a wonderful story and I enjoyed it.

Isolated/Stranded Together Trope & Amnesia Trope.  Who Ben and Rey would be if they couldn’t remember their pasts.  Very interesting character studies about who they are intrinsically and how without their identities, memories, force abilities and external labels they piece together who they think they are.  

The Way to Tomorrow by @the-reylo-void​

Post-TFA Divergent.  Exiled Ben.  Luke Lives.  Sometime after the events of TFA, the Resistance wins the war and sentences Ben to a year of exile.  Thanks to the Force Bond, Ben’s not as alone as his exile had been meant to be.  Somber mood, with Ben doing some heavy reflection and soul searching, even Rey does a good dose of internal reflection. A Life Between Times by @kuresoto​

Post-TLJ, sucked into a time warp. The only time travel I have read where instead of the characters trying to change the past, they focused on living in the present for a hopeful future.  (Also, this has one of the best bittersweet moments between Han Solo and Kylo/Ben.  It’s endearing and heart-breaking, and exactly what Ben (and I as a reader) needed).  

This Together, Any Together by @shipatfirstsight

Well written portrayal of a very antagonistic canon Kylo and Rey dynamic progressing into a domestic portrait of the two after they wake up married on modern day Earth. Diverges from canon post-TFA. The very meta touch that on Earth Ben and Rey are married authors who gained popularity from a book they wrote together and are now, supposedly, working on the sequel, is brilliant. The Reylo arc is nicely developed, but what is most endearing is the interactions between Ben and Han (who is alive in this reality). Ben’s longing for a relationship with this version of his father, who isn’t scared of him in this reality, is bittersweet.

A saga worth reading. Good characterizations, probable reylo arcthat progresses into a “realistic” domesticity. Extremely wellwritten, appears to be a professional writer. No cliffhanger, it’s notnecessary to continue with sequels, but they were just as good.

Post-TLJ, crash landed on deserted planet while fighting. Rey might be trapped with Kylo Ren, but she unknowingly holds a piece from Ben Solo’s past.

Grad student Rey (accidentally) enlists intimidating Professor Solo to deter unwanted advances by Hux.  Endearing, self deprecating and at times, a relatable, inner monologue of Rey pairs nicely with unapologetic Ben, whose super power is to unnerve stressed, grad students, but seems to hold an inexplicable soft spot for Rey.

Angsty take on the trope, it takes a little while for Kylo/Ben and Rey to warm up to each other, both being rather guarded.  I really liked how they were both portrayed in this, their tentativeness towards each other gave it a bit of a somber feel.  After a Thanksgiving at the Solos where they felt more of a sense of belonging than either would admit, a sense of hope for unexpected possibilities begins to emerge.  Part 2 in the series is up now and serves as an interlude between Ben and Rey back at college.  The author’s notes imply there is more to come in this series and I’m looking forward to the progression between these two as they begin to build trust in each other and themselves.

Canonverse Post-TLJ.  Part 1 is a well written dueling flashbacks of Ben/Kylo and Rey stranded together and forced to survive together alternating with a present day trial for Ben/Kylo after they are rescued by the Resistance.  Part 2 is Ben working with the Resistance with an emphasis on the relationship with his mother.  Nicely written and plotted.
