A Brief Guide to Yachts

This is a continuation to my cultural education segment (aka my rich bitch guide).

The yacht is an invention of the 14th century Dutch. The Dutch used small, fast boats for chasing smugglers, pirates and criminals. Rich ship owners and merchants began using these small “jaghts” to sail out to celebrate their returning merchant ships.

The first yacht club in the world, called the Cork Water Club, was established in Ireland in 1720.

Some famous clubs include:

USA:

1. Annapolis Yacht Club: Surrounding the Spa Creek Bridge in Annapolis, the Club boasts over 75 wet slips and dry dockage. The club began in 1886 as an informal canoe club, and today has 1600 regular members active in social, racing, and cruising programs

2. Chicago Yacht Club: Founded in 1875, Chicago Yacht Club is one of the oldest and most respected yacht clubs in the world. The Club is home to more than 1,400 members, including a winning America’s Cup skipper, and Olympic medalists.

Yachts are most active in the summer months (May- August in the northern hemisphere) or the winter months. many yacht owners decide to keep the maximum number of guests onboard to 12 (plus crew) for chartering.

Different types of yachts:

Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails

Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors

Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors

Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining

Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.

Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds.

Catamaran Yacht: a yacht with two hulls (pontoons) often made of fiberglass that can be used in shallow waters.

Back from Europe

We just got back from a two and a half week trip to Europe. We flew to Bilbao, Spain and hung out there for two days, then boarded the Norwegian Gem for an 11-stop cruise that began in Bilbao and ended in Rome. After three days in Rome we flew home. A kind fellow tourist (identity unknown) managed to give us both Covid-19 toward the end of the trip — our last full day in Rome and our travel day home were both miserable, and we tested positive as soon as we got to our house. (We did wear masks the whole way home, our diagnoses unconfirmed but strongly suspected.)

Other than one “sea day” as we sailed from Bilbao to our first stop in Lisbon, Portugal, we had a different stop in a different city every day, winding up visiting a total of six countries:

Motril, Spain (jumping off point for a bus trip north to Granada)

We are not inveterate cruisers — this is our fifth cruise, ever:

2004 Western Caribbean — Royal Caribbean

2007 Alaska — Royal Caribbean

2017 Hawaii — Norwegian Cruise Line

2018 Baltic Sea — Norwegian Cruise Line

2023 Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar/France/Italy — Norwegian Cruise Line

What made this one different, other than the length (the others were not as long) was that I bid for a room upgrade weeks prior to embarkation, not knowing if my bid amount would be enough to beat out others bidding for the same upgrades. Apparently it was, because we were did get upgraded; it was to a two-bedroom (a master bedroom and a smaller kids’ bedroom) “penthouse” suite that was the size of two regular staterooms and which came with butler service — daily treats and fresh ice deliveries multiple times per day, stuff like that, with our morning scheduled room service delivered *exactly* at the specified time each day, and other little lagniappes of elegance. We were also entitled to priority debarkation each day and we got to have breakfast each day in one of the specialty restaurants rather than fending for ourselves in the main buffet. It was nice. It will be hard to go back to a regular sized stateroom if we cruise again in the future. (Note: it was not a “Haven” suite — NCL has a whole deck at the very top of the ship for the people who really want to lay out some cash; you can’t even get to that floor without a special keycard. We did not spend that much.)

Would we do it again? Yes. It was fun. But as I said, we are not inveterate cruisers; we’re averaging one every 5.2 years.

What was our favorite part? Carole really liked Granada and the forests around the Alhambra. I liked Cadiz a lot — it was a bustling small city with lots of color and life and beautiful views. We both would have enjoyed having much more time in Barcelona, but that stop was annoyingly short. We were allowed off the ship at 9 am or so after arriving from Palma in the Balearic Islands and we had to be back on the ship at 4:30 pm so we could sail on to St. Tropez in France. We saw Park Guell and the Sagrada Familia in a whirlwind of rush-rush-rush… and that was it.

Least favorite? Well, other than the stop where we caught Covid … 🤒 The one stop neither of us much good to say about was Lisbon, as we found it a somewhat shabby, rundown city with uncollected trash everywhere — everywhere we were taken on our two-hour “Panoramic Drive through Lisbon” tour took us past slums and rundown buildings. I’m sure there are nice areas, but we didn’t see them on what meant to be a quick trip to the really cool stuff. (Our Baltic trip taught us the folly of booking nine-hour “See Every Damn Thing There Is To See” city tours; they left us exhausted and mentally wiped out.)

We’ll be sharing some photos and anecdotes, but please don’t feel compelled to pay any attention to them whatsoever. Other than being made to look at someone else’s baby photos (and I grant you that there are even people who enjoy doing that) I think having someone else show you endless snaps of fun places they went while you were at home punching a timeclock is at the top of a lot of people’s “No, thanks” lists. 🌍

Admiral Sir Sidney Smith

Well, Sidney Smith was one of the most colourful personalities of his time. He was arrogant, wilful, pompous, energetic, extravagant, capable, brave, theatrical and boastful. A flamboyant genius who could not stop talking about himself, and who claimed that he was perhaps the best English-Frenchman that ever lived , he was nonetheless always happy to dispense praise on others, generally after they had been inspired to great deeds by his over-brimming self-confidence, diligence and determination. He had a reputation for being kind-tempered, kind-hearted, and generally agreeable, but in warfare took more risks with the lives of his men than his contemporary, Lord Cochrane.

If you listened to original voices from the time. Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Troubridge declared that Smith made him sick, while Admiral Lord Exmouth called him gay and thoughtless. And even Nelson is reported to have said he was the gayest man in the Navy who behaved like one. Well he was of a slight build, penetrating dark eyes, a high-arched nose, striking and sharp looks and dark curly hair. Smith, like his father who had been a rake, was a lady s man, with very good manners and a razor-sharp mind, proficient in several languages and artistic talents. All in all, Sir Sidney Smith, whose real name was William Sidney Smith, was an interesting man.

He was born on 21 June 1764 in Park Lane, London, joined the Royal Navy in 1777 and soon distinguished himself in combat. He first distinguished himself in the American Revolutionary War, as a result of which he was promoted to lieutenant in 1780. This was despite the fact that he was not yet 19 years old. He served on HMS Alcide 74- guns, under Captain Charles Thompson, on which he was present at the Battle of Chesapeake on 5 September 1781, at St Kitts on 25 and 26 January 1782 and at the Saintes on 12 April. These successes led to his promotion to Master and Commander as early as 1782, and only one year later on 7 May to Post Captain. At that time he was only 18 years old. During this time he had built up a reputation as one of the most successful prize bringers, having managed to capture several prizes with his Sloop Fury, 16-guns and earning a sum of around 30,000 pounds. (By today's standards, that would be about 5 million pounds.) After that, his luck ran out, because he was discharged from the service and was then on half- pay, because of peace.

Now unemployed, he moved to Bath to study French, but when he heard in 1787 that there might be a war with Morocco, he secretly went there to study the coast and the language. In short, he tried his hand at being a spy. But when he returned home to present his findings to the admiralty, he was not able to do so. Because there was no more talk of a possible war and he was once again empty-handed. After his efforts to take up an ambassadorial role in China had been unsuccessful, Smith took six months' leave in Sweden in 1789. The following January, he reappeared in London with an embassy from King Gustav III of Sweden and a request to be allowed to serve in the monarch's fleet. The government did not approve of this unofficial emissary and so he returned to Sweden claiming to be in possession of dispatches for the King to serve as a volunteer in the war with the Russians. Assigned as commander of the light squadron, his fleet of a hundred galleys and gunboats dislodged the Russians from the islands protecting Vyborg Bay, where they had blockaded the Swedish fleet in June, thus leading to their relief.

Although he did not act officially, he was knighted by the King of Sweden in 1790 for his actions, which caused great amusement in England. Yet he returned home briefly, only to try his luck at the Prussian court for the next two years. Initially tolerated and advised against the Russians at court, his political views became more and more disapproved of and in 1892 he tried to enter Turkish service. When he heard in 1793 that there was going to be a war between England and France, he tried to come back home and although he was still under half-pay, he was given a new commission. Although he did not act officially, he was knighted by the King of Sweden in 1790 for his actions, which caused great amusement in England. Yet he returned home briefly, only to try his luck at the Prussian court for the next two years. Initially tolerated and advised against the Russians at court, his political views became more and more disapproved of and in 1892 he tried to enter Turkish service.

When he heard in 1793 that there would be a war between England and France, he tried to return home. He obtained a felucca and, dressed in Arab robes and turban, sailed to Toulon to offer his services to Admiral Lord Hood, who was trying to support the French royalist forces. It was on this occasion that Sydney Smith and Horatio Nelson first met. The young revolutionary Colonel of Artillery Napoleon Bonaparte was rapidly decimating the royalist forces. Admiral Hood asked Sidney Smith, who was serving as a volunteer, to destroy as many royalist ships in the harbour as possible to protect them from the revolutionaries. He succeeded in destroying about half the fleet, despite the lack of supporting forces. In July 1795, again officially in the service of the Royal Navy, his squadron captured and fortified a small island off the coast of Normandy, which served as a forward base for the British blockade of Le Havre for the next seven years. On 19 April 1796, he used his ship's boats to take out a French ship anchored in Le Havre.

As he sailed out of the harbour, the wind suddenly died and Captain Sidney Smith and his crew were captured. He himself was taken to Temple Prison in Paris. Despite all offers from the British government to buy him out or exchange him for a French captain, the French refused. Sidney's reputation had preceded him and he was known to be a keen spy. He stayed in prison for two years until he managed to free himself with forged release papers. On his return to London, Smith was received by Earl Spencer, First Lord of the Admiralty, for a private audience with the King, and as a sign of goodwill, His Majesty sent the esteemed Captain Bergeret back to France in exchange. He was sent to the Mediterranean in 1799 and charged with reinforcing the defences in the Levant for protection against Napoleon, who was moving his army east and north from Egypt. When Napoleon laid siege to Acre in the same year, Sidney Smith used his guns to support the defenders and his fleet to supply them, and did so as an independent commander . This arrogance with which he performed earned him a sharp rebuke from both Admiral the Earl of St Vincent and Rear Admiral Lord Nelson, who as the next flag officer was particularly outraged that Smith had taken the right to hoist a broad pennant as commodore when he should have been under his command. The situation was only resolved when the broad pennant was brought down and Smith submitted to Nelson .

Napoleon eventually abandoned the siege and said of Sidney Smith, "This man made me miss my destiny." Smith's success in halting the French advance was rewarded a pension of 1,000 guineas, along with many other awards, including a coveted Chelengk and a sable coat from the Turkish Sultan. For their part, the French were so annoyed with him that Buonaparte apparently tried to have him assassinated. From 1799- 1806 he had small operations in the Mediterranean and in 1800 even tried to conclude an agreement with French General Jean-Baptiste Kléber to evacuate French troops on British ships. However, Admiral Lord Keith did not agree, so there were disputes in Keiro until the agreement was reached in 1802. Sidney had been back in London since 1801. Where he was elected to the British House of Commons as MP for Rochester in 1802. He held this mandate until 1806.

Unlike most senior naval officers in home waters, Smith did not attend Vice Admiral Lord Nelson's funeral in London on 9 January 1806. Instead, after a brief stay in Bath, he arrived in Plymouth on 14 January to sail with a small squadron to the Mediterranean to join Vice-Admiral Lord Collingwood. Were he land forces commanded in southern Italy trying to defeat a superior French force. Despite a great victory, he was replaced by a British Army officer, largely because he once again could not control his famous arrogance. On the one hand, he had exceeded his command, even though he had been rear- admiral since 1805, and on the other, he had antagonised the French generals by sending them newspaper cuttings about his great successes.

In October 1807, he cruised off the mouth of the Tagus and in November escorted Prince Regent John of Portugal, who had been expelled by the French, and the royal family to Rio de Janeiro in the Portuguese colony of Brazil. There, the Prince Regent decorated him as a Grand Knight of the Order of the Tower and the Sword. In February 1808, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the British fleet off South America and, contrary to his orders, subsequently planned an attack on the neighbouring Spanish colonies together with the Portuguese. Before these plans could be implemented, he was ordered back home in July 1809.

On 31 July 1810, he was promoted to Vice Admiral of the Blue. Between 1812 and 1814 he operated in the Mediterranean as Admiral Pellew's second-in-command, during which time he was decorated in Sicily by King Ferdinand as a Grand Knight of the Cross of the Order of St Ferdinand and of Merit. After Napoléon Bonaparte was defeated in 1814 and exiled on Elba, he returned to England. On 2 January 1815, in recognition of his services, he was struck Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath by King George III, and thus at last received a British knighthood.

On 15 June 1815, he attended the Duchess of Richmond's ball in Brussels. Three days later, hearing gunfire, he rode out and met the Duke of Wellington, who had just defeated the returning Napoléon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo. Smith then accepted the surrenders of the French garrisons at Arras and Amiens and ensured the Allies entry into Paris without a fight, as well as King Louis XVIII's safe return there.

After the war, he lived mainly in Paris with his wife. He took part in the Congress of Vienna and campaigned for the abolition of slavery and debt bondage, and in particular for the raising of funds to free Christian slaves from the Barbary pirates. He was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Red on 19 July 1821, and Lieutenant-General of the Royal Marines on 28 June 1830, but did not hold a naval command of his own after 1814. His wife died in 1826 and on 20 July 1838 he was raised by Queen Victoria to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath. Smith died on 26 May 1840 at his residence of No. 9 Rue d Auguesseau in Paris, he was 75 years old.

1.Baltra (South Seymour) Island - Also referred to as South Seymour, Baltra is often a small flat island at the core of the Galpagos. Baltra Airport is among two airports. 20. SouthPlaza Island(Plaza Sur) - Named honoring former president, General Leonidas Plaza of Ecuador.. It has an division of 0.13 square kms. The flora of South Plaza includes Opuntia cactus and Sesuvium plants, which form a reddish carpet on top of the lava formations. Iguanas are abundant, and big variety of birds can be observed in the cliffs.

Last documents from Helfert, Murat

Helfert in his book on Murat cites some more letters and documents, most of which however seem of little interest, like the declarations of devotion from Pizzo to Ferdinand or Jablonovski’s attempts to figure out why Ferdinand would not talk to him anymore (because he had learned of Metternich’s offer to grant Murat asylum). This is the warning by Austrian envoy Lebzeltern from Rome to his colleagues in Naples that Murat was on the loose:

I beg you to send by mail the enclosed package to Monsieur le Prince de Jablonowski.

Please also inform him that Murat had left Vescovado for Ajaccio where the inhabitants received him enthusiastically and offered to hand over the citadel to him which he accepted.

This is a summary of several reports from Bastia. Those which I have just received contain the notice of Murat's flight from Ajaccio during the night of 28 September with 150 armed men on board three ships. One believed him directed towards the coasts of Naples. This news dated Bastia of October 1 adds that the English gentleman who came to speak to Murat on the 28th could not obtain his adhesion to the decisions of the Allied Sovereigns in his respect.

I will try to send you, General, further information on this event.

Although the English captain of the frigate the Meander, in harbour at Bastia, has sent a notice to Naples concerning this escape, I beg You to send the present letter by mail to the Minister of Austria, since it is possible that the southerly winds which have been blowing with force these days have delayed the course of the English aviso.

Murat has too little credit and too few means in Italy to arouse the slightest concern about the results of his foolish step; however, as it could produce an effect on the minds of some exalted or disgruntled individuals, it is always wise to devote the greatest attention to the possible consequences of his desperate foreplay. Yours faithfully etc.

And then we have Austrian ambassador Jablonovski informing Metternich that Murat was captured and about to be shot, and that he would go into hiding until everything was over:

My Prince!

I do not lose a moment's time in announcing to Your Highness that the King has just received the positive and official news of Murat's arrest on the Calabrian coast. Here is an extract from all the telegraphic and other news which has reached us up to this moment, and a summary of all the most well-founded conjectures which serve to explain this extraordinary event.

Murat having refused to accept the proposals of which Sieur Mucarone [should be: Maceroni] had been the bearer, seeing his party diminish from day to day, and foreseeing that after his refusal the Governor of the Isle of Corsica would take more serious measures to secure his person, embarked on the night of the 28th to the 29th of September with about two hundred armed men, and about thirty officers on six large boats called gondoloni, similar to the small barbarian vessels, taking supplies for eight days. It is to be presumed that his plan was to join the Tunis flotilla cruising in these parts, on board of which he hoped to find an asylum and perhaps means of disturbing the coasts of the Kingdom of Naples. In any case, a very strong storm that took place during the night of the 30th to the 1st of October threw the whole expedition onto the coast of the Kingdom and separated the six boats. On the 4th a boat was seen on the coast of Sorrento which was believed to belong to the Barbary tribes and which seemed to be waiting or looking for other ships; on the 5th a similar one was reported in the Gulf of Salerno; it seems that two other boats joined this one. What is certain is that on the 6th [sic?] Murat disembarked with general Franceschetti, a colonel and about fifty armed men at Pizzo, on the coast of Calabria, not far from Monteleone and about forty-eight hours from Naples: he left 40 men and some officers on the two other boats and ordered them to sail along the coast of Calabria. As soon as he had landed he went to the main square, gathered the people and ordered them to shout: Long live King Joachim, saying that he was the King and had come to take possession of his states. There were no troops in this place, perhaps even some intelligence had been spared and there was a moment of uncertainty; but the peasants of the surroundings having learned of Murat's landing armed themselves and came to attack him. After a long and obstinate resistance Murat's party lost the upper hand and he himself was taken, put in irons and taken to the Sicilian general Nunziante, Commander of Calabria. At the time of the departure of the courier the most perfect tranquillity reigned in the whole province. On the 10th a detachment of gunboats took the two other boats which skirted the coasts, and whose skippers as well as the officers who were in them declared that Murat had said to them in Ajaccio that he wanted to go to Tunis, but that having arrived at the height of the Carbonara cape, he had ordered them to sail towards Calabria.

The first news of the landing at Pizzo had arrived on the morning of the 10th. During the night the telegraph announced that a French general had been arrested at Pizzo. Yesterday I went to pay a compliment to His Majesty, who was pleased with the news, but was not yet very sure of its authenticity. During the night there was news of the capture of the two boats and finally this morning the official report arrived from the constituted authorities of Monteleone, capital of the province, on all that had happened. The first telegraphic news had spread throughout the town on the 10th with incredible speed. We took without affectation all the precautionary measures which the circumstance required, but they were useless, for there was not the slightest movement. I have reason to believe, and Monsieur A'Court confirmed it to me, that as soon as Murat arrived in Corsica orders were given on all the coasts to subject him to a military trial if he was caught with his arms in his hands; consequently on the 9th or 10th he will have suffered the penalty of his insane refusal, and of the most extravagant enterprise which was ever made.

As, however, our illustrious Master had allowed him to take refuge in His states (although by his refusal he had placed himself outside the protection of the allied Sovereigns), I did not want to put myself in the position either of receiving the confidences of the Ministry or of hearing the opinions of the two parties which would not have failed to want to probe mine, and as soon as I was certain of Murat's arrest and of the perfect tranquillity of the town, I took the pretext of going to meet my family, who are arriving here tomorrow morning, to absent myself for twenty-four hours. I asked General Nugent to have me followed by an officer whom I sent to the Marshal Count de Bellegarde. Tomorrow evening I will be back in Naples where the news of Murat's end will surely have already been received, and I will have avoided by this the embarrassing questions which my numerous acquaintances would have made me about the intentions of the King with regard to Murat. I can assure Your Highness that any step which I would have wished to take in his favour would have been useless, for according to all probabilities he will have ceased to exist at the moment when the first news of his arrest arrived in Naples, and according to the knowledge which I have of the general opinion of the country I do not doubt at all that this event will not produce the best effect there. On the other hand, I did not want to appear to know, and even less to have provoked, the decision of the government, and as I was one of the first to know the official news of this morning, I was able to leave before the Marquis of Circello had officially communicated it to me, and in the eyes of the public my departure was not surprising, for I had told all my acquaintances that I was waiting for my family and that I would go to meet them.

Chevalier de Medici told me yesterday, in speaking to me of the police measures he had taken, that he had put all his care into preventing any of Murat's supporters from forcing the government to hang him. The King also told me that the orders he had sent to General Nunziante were intended solely to prevent the people from taking advantage of this moment to assuage their particular vengeances. I hope, therefore, that there will not be the slightest disturbance in the kingdom, and I will seize the first favourable moment to beg the King to deign to pardon those who had left the kingdom in the month of May and were still exiled, such as Pignatelli-Cerchiara, Roccaromana, S. Giuliano and others: if I succeed in obtaining this pardon, this trait of clemency will produce the best effect. Besides, Murat's catastrophe consolidates the tranquillity of this country and will contribute to calming heads throughout Italy.

I beg Your Highness to forgive the disjointedness of this dispatch which I am writing in great haste in a bad inn room, and I beg You to agree etc.

There is also a rather lengthy report by the Neapolitan Minister of Police about Murat’s landing ibn Pizzo, but Helfert already states that it’s full of rubbish and based more on hearsay than on actual events. So unless there is interest in it, I would refrain from translating it.

8. Zlatni Rat, Brac Zlatni Rat is one of the most unique beaches of Croatia. Also known as the Golden Horn, this pretty beach has been a symbol of Brac Island.

The white sandy beach and the always beautiful Adriatic Sea could alone make this beach noteworthy. However, its most unique feature is its location.
