On the other end of the spectrum, if you're very techy but still don't want corporate spyware here's how you do it.

Get a Raspberry Pi and install Home Assistant on it. If you use the Raspberry Pi imager you literally can't fuck this part up. You just plug in your SD card, select Home Assistant OS, type in your Wi-Fi password and just plug it in somewhere unobtrusive and central to your house or apartment.

Buy a Zigbee USB adapter compatible with Zigbee2MQTT and plug it in. I got one with the CC2652P chipset on AliExpress.

Install the Zigbee2MQTT HA Add-on and set it up for you device.

Buy some cheap Zigbee smart outlets and let them pair with your HA server. They go for about $6/outlet which is a bit more expensive than the remote version but still not too bad.

Now you have all the benefits of smart stuff like automations, scenes but also without BS like Alexa/Google home. And (if you want, it's not there by default obviously) you can set up voice commands through HA that work locally. Zigbee devices have no wi-fi or internet access so they're free to be any brand as sketchy as you like. They couldn't track you even if they wanted to. And everything is controlled through one open source app.

Zigbee is an open industry standard as compared to all those 433Hz devices are using bespoke protocols. If you're motivated with your Flipper Zero they're never that complicated but it'll be annoying to find another remote where any and everything can control Zigbee devices.

Unless you're looking for a project you should probably go with the remotes but this starts to be an attractive option if you have a lot of outlets you want to convert or want other devices in the mix like water sensors, LED bulbs/strips, or smart switches to get those pesky built-in lights.

Accessibility tip:

If you want to automate your home a bit, but you don't want any "smart" tech, you can just buy remote controlled power sockets instead

They are a lot cheaper and easier to set up and use than some home automation smart tech nonsense

They don't need an app (but some models come with optional apps and there are apps that are compatible with most of these)

Many of them use the 433mhz frequency to communicate, which makes most models compatible with each other, even if they are from different manufacturers

The tech has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time to come

You don't have to put any fucking corporate listening devices like an amazon echo in your home
