just moved in into a brand new "student sccomodation hub" and there's only an app to open the locks to my room
i can buy a physical key for 30€ (which is probably just a magnetic key which still relies somewhat on the system instead of on good old locks)
im buying the key tho i dont want to support this but ive already almost gotten myself locked out on my first night
i literally cant leave my room without my phone! this was such a great idea guys good job!!

QR code menus are the prime example of everything wrong with smartifying things that were perfectly fine dumb as fuck.
QR code menus: better not forget your phone home, also make sure to have internet access, open the menu, tap and scroll through different little sections for each type of food and drinks (if you're lucky enough to not have to download an app), order after 17 minutes and 54 fucks under your breath
Physical menus: open it with your hands, go through pages, order
What was the reason for this? I wonder about this every single time I see a place that offers no physical menu. What was this for? Who suggested this?
Was it the same people who decided we need to download an app for our fridge? Smart fridges, smart washing machines, dishwashers, smart doors, windows, fuck do I know at this point.
"Oh, Jimmy, you know what would make this basic product that does not require internet to do what it's meant to do seem more modern and luxurious so we can sell it 3 times its actual value?
- A Wi-fi connection."
Jimmy: "Brilliant. I think we've really shown just how trendy and in touch with current technology we are by making everything more complicated and frustrating to use."
Only physical menus, dumb appliances and tactile buttons on cars from now on, thank you very much.
That's all.
And most importantly - if something operates as intended without an app, it does NOT need a fucking app.
#qr code menus need to go#yes I have been to a restaurant that offered no physical menu prior to writing this why?#nothing makes me feel more dumb than using something made unnecessarily smart#tech#technology

That ADHD feel of "normal" people saying that they're so distracted by their phones and then they give us neurodivergent people so much grief for not functioning properly. You can leave you phone off or throw it away. We can't just get rid of our sources problem and yet we're expected to win in a race with a handicap imposed on us. Imagine if if they had to wear smart HUD glasses and headphones playing binaural asmr all day. Let's see how well they'd function then.
I mean i get what you mean and people shouldn’t give us grief but i would argue that we aren’t far off from what you’re talking about already. It’s easy to say they can leave their phone off or get rid of it but in this day and age where everything has been turned digital (qr code menus for example) that’s just not realistic. and you don’t have to be neurodivergent to be glued to your cellphone that’s definitely not an ND only problem it’s a problem with technology dominating literally everything and being built to be addictive. esp tiktok. btw not being mean this is just my opinion

this is literally. the stupidest addition to the peanut butter cookies thing but oh my god i keep thinking about it, it's making me so fucking angry. it's one of those things where it's like, it's technically so damn pointless and typing this out makes me go 'oh my god why are you this upset about this' but it's on top of so many other tiny pointless things my family insists on being stupid about to the point that I Have Had It Up To Here With It All, so
so my aunt got my grandmother a new tv for christmas. for their living room. this is technically a good move, bc i actually do not remember how long they've had their living room tv and my grandmother is in her 90s and has a hard time seeing and hearing so a new bigger tv!!! is great!!!! now it is hard to find a "dumb" tv nowadays so it is of course a smart tv, which takes a little more set up. so they ask my uncle to 1) stash the tv until christmas 2) come over with the tv and hook it up. this is also a good move, bc objectively my uncle is very good with electronics. management and maintenance of electronics was literally his job for many, many years. he is asked to do many of their electronic shenanigans. (there are not many, bc, again, my grandmother is in her 90s and her cell phone is a flip phone she keeps turned off unless she's making a call, but, yknow.)
so he and his wife go over to my grandmother's house this morning to give her the new tv and set it up. this. should be a simple task. no problem.
my mom gets a phone call this morning from my aunt who says, "okay! it's me!!! along with mom!!!! and [my uncle] and [his wife]!!!!!! so we're having a problem setting up the tv. it's telling me to scan the qr code on the screen and i don't know if my phone is doing it??????"
1) why did she call my mom for this????? my mom does not know how to scan a qr code. my mom has problems with just managing the volume on her phone. she knows what qr codes are and that they are scanned but she's never scanned one a day in her life, why is my aunt asking her????????
2) IS THAT NOT, LITERALLY, WHY MY UNCLE IS THERE??????????? TO HELP YOU???????? TO DO IT??????? TO SCAN THAT QR CODE??????????
my aunt: i don't know if my phone is scanning it, it's not bringing up a link me, bc my mom puts all calls on speaker phone: it's either in the camera or in a drop down setting. you have to swipe down from the top of the phone my aunt: I'M POINTING MY PHONE AT THE TV BUT IT'S NOT BRINGING UP A LINK. I'M WAVING IT AROUND I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S DOING ANYTHING me: IF IT ISN'T SCANNING IT THEN IT -- IT'S NOT SCANNING IT! PULL DOWN THE MENU my uncle, in the background: you have to pull down the menu on the top of your phone my aunt: .....i see a bunch of circles.......oh that's the flashlight button!! me: IT'S NOT IN THAT SECTION. YOU HAVE TO PULL IT DOWN FARTHER. YOU'RE LOOKING FOR A BUTTON THAT SAYS 'SCAN QR CODE' my aunt: oh, i'm back on the home screen!
inexplicably, apparently by only the grace of god i fucking swear, she finds the scan qr code button and scans it. oh but also she said something about having to turn on the option for it in settings so she probably actually went in through the camera (i don't know!!! my phone has, yknow, A BUTTON FOR SCANNING CODES IN THE PULL DOWN MENU.) so you know what. i don't know. i don't care. here's what's pissing me off --
1) THIS IS LITERALLY WHY MY UNCLE WAS THERE
2) HE WAS LITERALLY IN THE BACKGROUND, TELLING HER THE SAME THING I WAS TELLING HER
3) WHY DID YOU CALL MY MOM??????? WHAT ON EARTH POSSESSED YOU TO CALL A TECHNOLOGICALLY ILLITERATE PERSON WHEN YOUR BROTHER IS IN THE ROOM
4) she didn't even THANK ME, my mom didn't even talk on the phone call bc SHE DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO DO IT
5) she called back LATER to thank me. and apparently i didn't even really do anything, so!
5a) me: if she calls again we're not picking up. my mom's phone: /rings. the caller id indicates it is my grandmother's cell phone my mom: hello? my aunt: IT'S ME AGAIN!!!
6) NO, I KNOW WHY YOU CALLED. I KNOW YOU MADE IT A POINT TO CALL MY MOM, WHEN YOU 100000% DID NOT HAVE TO AND IT WAS UNNECESSARY TO DO, I KNOW YOU PURPOSELY TO TOLD HER WHO WAS IN THE ROOM, MADE SURE EVERYONE IN THE ROOM KNEW WHO YOU WERE CALLING. YOU WANTED YOUR BROTHER TO SAY SOMETHING TO HER. YOU WANTED TO GIVE HIM A FUCKING EXCUSE TO TALK TO HER, BC HE WON'T TALK TO HER. AND DID HE SAY A GODDAMN THING???? NO! NO HE DID NOT!!!!!! HE SAID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ON THE PHONE!!!!!!!!!!!! HE DIDN'T DO ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because he's too much of an asshole with some bizarre conservative political pride to even say a word to my mom!!!!!!!!!!!! even with an opening!!!! even with THE STUPIDEST OPENING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!!!!!! WHAT DID THIS ACCOMPLISH????????? WHAT DID THIS ACHIEVE????????? MORE OF MY UNDYING RAGE, HONESTLY!!!!!!!!!
my mom: oh, absolutely, that's exactly why she called. i wonder what on earth was even going ON in that house that he apparently wasn't helping. that she was doing the whole thing. me: I'M GOING TO KILL HER WITH MY BARE HANDS.
later on, one of my mom's OTHER brothers messaged her about the christmas gift my mom sent him. she got him a doctor who trivia book, and he said, "i'm not into doctor who anymore. i hope you kept the receipt."
#this is so stupid. i'm sitting back i'm closing my eyes i'm listening to my angry playlist#my mom: !!! i'm not SENDING IT BACK TO AMAZON IT'S NOT WORTH IT lulu you're getting another doctor who book for christmas.#me: G R E A T !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#(said in the tone of someone who is 1) genuinely excited for Facts About Things I Like 2) about to go scream in the street)

It's not even convenient is my issue.
Like I don't think it's smart for everyone to get a chip in their arm that does everything or something but at least I can see how that could be convient.
Also, I have beef with restaurants and their fucking menus on QR Codes. I get it. I understand a lotta restaurants are small and poor and all this pandemic shit got us thinking about cleanliness...
But like...
DUDE. The font is terrible, not just with size but printing too, the page is slightly cut off, the images (if there are any) are the lowest quality, and there are words misspelled or missing spaces.
It cannot be harder to have a menu printed, photocopied, and laminated in the long run
Also I can't even use the QR CODE thing half the time. Sux. I gotta read on someone else's phone.
theres bikes around the city you can rent but you have to use an app that needs your drivers license. theres buses that drive right to your destination, but if you dont have change you need the app. you can wash your car here if you sign into the app. you can go to the bathroom here you just have to unlock it with the app that needs your location on. you can order at this restaurant if you scan the code and download the app. im losing my freaking mind

To be fair, those things exist without accounts.
The second I see shit asking me to make an account, I don't buy it, or I return it. We literally have the power to change this by simply not buying stuff, if you buy it then you enable them to keep making it. You may not get the latest TV or the latest lightbulb that changes colors but those things do exist without "smart technology" and without accounts.
Just like how there are restaurants that still have menus instead of qr codes, if I go to a restaurant and they only have a qr code, I leave the restaurant, I'm not dealing with that shit.

Why Tech Matters in Hospitality Jobs
Technology has become a daily part of many hospitality roles. Here’s how:
1. Digital Menus and Contactless Ordering
Many restaurants in London now use QR-code menus. Guests scan the code, order on their phones and pay digitally. Staff should know how to explain this to customers, help with any confusion and update the menu when needed.
2. Modern Payment Systems
Gone are the days of handling cash. Restaurants now use smart POS (Point-of-Sale) systems like Square, EPOS Now, or Lightspeed. These systems help staff split bills, apply discounts and process refunds—all with a few taps.

Managers use apps to plan shifts. Customers use apps to make bookings. Staff should know how to manage reservations, check schedules and communicate through team apps.
New Kinds of Hospitality Roles Are Coming Up
Technology has also created new job roles in the hospitality space. Some of these include:
Digital Guest Assistant – Helps guests with app check-ins and tech-based services.
Delivery & Online Menu Manager – Handles menus on apps like Uber Eats or Deliveroo.
Customer Experience Analyst – Looks at online reviews and customer feedback to improve service.
These roles weren’t common a few years ago. Now, many restaurants and hotels in London want people who understand both service and software.
What This Means for Job Seekers
If you’re applying for restaurant jobs in London, it’s a good idea to add your tech skills to your resume. Even basic ones!
Can you use Google Sheets? Have you worked with a POS machine? Do you know how to take bookings using an app?
Mentioning these can help you stand out.

Practice on Delivery Apps: Explore how online food platforms work. It helps you understand how orders are placed and managed.
Be Curious: Don’t be afraid to ask questions during training or try new tools on the job.
