Oh, time to bring out my little doodle of Blake from Supposed To Be in therapy!
Tumblr media
oh apparently OP on that funny gun post meant it negatively and they're pissed people draw guns badly or just don't care enough for them so
Tumblr media
if you draw guns like this i'm kissing you in the mouth personally. i am giving y'all a free pass to draw them as simple or as badly as you'd like.
also please make your guns weirder whenever someone complains about them, just make them out of meat. make them have 3 triggers. make them stupid and glowy and give them a heart shaped barrel. make your critics grovel in pain as you create horrors beyond their comprehension. let gods tremble as you corrupt the divine art of creation for your nefarious whims. its funny

"Lean into Smoothbore as a name, lean into your whole anti-authority thing. One of Washington's own rebels. Make a stun weapon that looks like an old smoothbore musket that you can fight with. Classic, inoffensive, and if you go off about the government we can play up the First Amendment as part of your theme." "I think," she says, in a strained voice, "That I'd slit my fucking throat before I acted as a government thug while calling myself a fucking revolutionary!"
see this is why you ought to play into the civil war theme. It's a good compromise in my opinion! Plus they just had way better uniforms for the civil war. I've always been a fan of the zouave look.
Granted, the whole zouave look is like. hyper cultural appropriation, and plus. I think the idea of an aesthetic focused around a war fought over slavery might be a... hot button issue. for smoothbore. in particular.

Hey americans by the way i just want you to remember that you're allowed (at least last time i checked) to own blackpowder firearms that don't use brass cartridges no matter what. Even if you're a felon. So like you do have the right to own a musket for home defense. And yes, that is, infact, what the founding fathers intended

"Merry Christmas, superpowered homeless child! Have some spiked eggnog to keep you warm! And y'know what else can keep you warm? The sense of pride and accomplishment that comes with joining the Wards program!"
This is the kinda thing Lily was doing before she transferred to Brockton. #1 Recruiter for the NY Wards, three years running!
(This is actually a Supposed To Be AU where Blake goes to NYC, and Lily tries to bribe her into joining the Wards. I was too lazy to draw them, so just imagine 28 tinker guns in various states of disassembly just off to one side. Blake had to clear off her workbench to properly appreciate the booze.)

How effective would smoothbore, muzzle loading black powder artillery (think like napoleonic, maybe victorian era) be in the amber skies world? I recognize that it wouldn't be very efficient or anything, I guess I'm moreso asking if any particular strains would be resistant to like. Being hit with a cannonball.
Tbh that's kind of what firearms technology has evolved into. Ballistic undersuits worn under most combat rigs can deflect most rifle rounds. It takes explosive, or anti-armor vehicle rounds to disable a rigged combattant. A combat rig will obviously increase your carrying capacity, but the economics of ammo-to-weight ratios made man-carried automatic weapons a specialist role.
The heaviest combat rigs are effectively tanks, but hitting a light/medium rig with a Napoleonic cannonball could fracture bones and dent armor. That's a lot of force. It would at the very least stun whatever you hit.
Breach-loaded slug pistols are often carried as a "coup de grace" weapon when you don't have time to cut off your opponents head with an arc welder. You just kinda disable their rig, knock them over, and pop a .50 caliber round into a gap in their faceplate.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Liberals: The Founding Fathers did not intend for people to own assault weapons!
Me: (Shows them the list of all the firearms I hope to own someday. (Flintlock, musket, bayonet, and and a smoothbore pistol.)) How's this?
Liberals: >:(
"They never wanted civilians to own weapons of war!!!"
What was a musket in 1791 Janet? What was a musket in 1791 Janet! Stop running and answer the question!

For how amazing an improvement rifled muskets were over their smoothbore predecessor, it's even more impressive how little impact they had before being put up against early breechloaders simply because only the British spent enough on the required amount of training for all their troops to take advantage of it. In Crimea the Russians just don't train their troops in marksmanship, the French mostly train specialist troops in it and overall relies more on shock tactics, and the Ottomans and Sardinians presumably were involved. In the American Civil War both sides use mass armies of conscript because the US Army beforehand was like 10k guys with a few marines on top. In the Italian Wars of Unification the French, Italians and Austrians were pretty much matched. In the German Wars of Unification they had the breechloading Dreyse and that kind of shifted things forward past the relevance of rifled muskets as peak technology, in that they didn't dazzle anyone they way they could have some decades ago (not that they were obsolete).
We went from round ball shot from smoothbore muskets to ogival bullets that went through two dozen complex different systems and configurations making them ten times more accurate, and in the end it impacted maybe three wars.

It could be considered sad, perhaps, how things must happen for things to continue on the correct path, consider how it could be comparable to that of the work of a ranch-hand as they guide the herd towards the best pastures. Occasionally they must make a difficult decision which may or may not require a sacrifice, some of the herd may not make it, but ultimately it is for the best possible outcome for the whole.
*insert that one song with tears falling down at the party and being the saddest baby in the room* I've been playing with the whole cowboy Danny Phantom idea for awhile now. If ya'll are curious about designs and meaning feel free to read below. Don't fret, I have more cowboy stuff stewing in the stock pot, but the potatoes aren't soft enough yet so ya'll have to wait a bit more.
For Danno So design choices are taking Southwestern outfitting and combining it a little with the Ghost King stuff too, such as the Crown of Fire becoming akin to a hat band (which nicer hat bands and sometimes feathers are often earned within ranch-hand and rodeo cultures) and then the Ring of Rage becomes the Bolo of Rage, heh. And naturally the kiddo's insignia becomes a belt buckle because those are earned for sure and usually goes with the outfit. Now for CW
Tumblr media
I based a lot of his design off more outrider/ outlaw designs while keeping the feeling of his original outfit. So his cloak remained but shorter and a little more ragged, which many travelers back then would have some sort of cloak or coat, depending on region, money and circumstance, fighters usually went with looser clothing so it was easier to move and access weapons. Of course you have the bandolier, which was used mostly to carry more ammo. The rifle CW is carrying is loosely based off a Winchester Model 1873 Smoothbore Rifle, which was a common rifle type in the late 1800s. Of course I had to reference the medallions with an engraving in the butt of the rifle, which carvings and decorations on firearms were common during the time, with many carving the decorations themselves during downtime, and well, we know how CW is about his branding. The last bit that really could stand out is his belt buckle, which is of course decorative and based off Dine Silver and Turquoise jewelry with a common blossom pattern in the center. Being from the southwest, there's a lot of things about life out here, both in the past and present that require sacrifice and that's something that resonates a lot with DP honestly. It's a theme I like playing with a bit when it comes to the idea of the southwest. It's why Danny looks melancholy and withdrawn here and CW in his typical aloof nature is more, neutral. If ya'll read through all this, congrats, you didn't get caught in a cactus, ya'll are awesome.

I love it!
the problem with having OCs and shit is that now i'm trapped thinking about hypothetical scenarios in my head. now i've been thinking about a 10 chapter ao3 fic of supernova trying to make smoothbore eat a vegetable that i will never ever write for the last hour. it would go so badly. tabbi would be dead before the day was out.
