Aquila’s Reincarnation & Aquila’s Descendant
I was thinking of how it was a shame that King Ahazuya of Mikado died before Nanashi could meet him, and then I realized that he didn’t. Flynn never reached Tennozu, so he never slayed the Red Knight. We know this because everyone in Tennozu is dead by the time we reach it, and the Arahabaki Nanashi slays there says he came to scavenge the occult energies, and wasn’t responsible for (most of) the murders.
So it’s entirely possible that King Ahazuya is still running around in Apocalypse. He’s probably the Baal you fight in the Cosmic Egg; presumably, the human sacrifice cult worked, but he only got as far as reviving as Beelzebub, so he needed Inanna to revive all the way.
I think there’s a lot that could be done with King Aquila’s reincarnation meeting King Aquila’s descendant, before Baal completely subsumes him. I see a quest and a boss fight where Nanashi keeps getting a fourth combat dialogue option besides “good” “bad” “do nothing.” This mysterious fourth option is clearly not in Nanashi’s voice; it’s in the formal style we see in citizens of Mikado, and it uses the royal we. Like, “You disappoint us, fallen king of Mikado.” It also admonishes Ahazuya for failing in his duties. Unlike most of the options, this is like inflicting Taunt; lowers defense by two, boosts attack by one.
At the end of the quest, the party wonders why Nanashi started talking funny all of a sudden.
And then I remembered King Ahazuya’s fate: after being deposed, he fled to Tokyo, pursued by angels. In his last moments, he prayed to Baal, and Baal resurrected him in exchange for servitude. Sound familiar?
The only time there isn’t a fourth dialogue option is when Ahazuya accuses Nanashi of doing the same thing as him, and Nanashi has to question why he took Dagda’s offer.
Now I’m wondering if King Aquila and his descendants have a predisposition for that sort of thing. Like, “Yeah, turns out the year-long period of mourning’s there because dead kings keep haunting us.” Blasted and Infernal Akira have that, too.
Going off of that, it would be fun if Navarre is one of King Aquila’s descendants, and he came back because he inherited that trait. I mean, I’d think he’s a descendant anyways because most noble families would end up mingling with the royal line at some point.
Also, Ahazuya knowing to pray to Baal in this pseudo-Christian country brings up more questions. I now have a theory: before his unexpected death, King Aquila charged some of his demons with tasks that persist to the present day. We know the Minotaur guards the way to Tokyo, Mastema continued Aquila’s double agent role, and Aeshema’s data got buried with him; King Aquila had a few more.
King Aquila summoned gods to bless Mikado and make it more prosperous. He had Dyaus keep the skies clean and free of radiation, Anahita to create pure water for rivers and lakes, Baal to keep the fields fertile, and generally add forests and valleys and mountains and things (and I don’t care that you can’t get these demons in these games). He absolutely needed them to get Mikado arable enough to feed Tokyo’s population once they emigrate, but Mikado today doesn’t need them. Farming’s going to be a lot harder without them, but it’s not like they’ll starve.
The gods he summoned are, as expected, powerful and temperamental. The royal family has a secret duty to appease them with rituals and sacrifices, and the most powerful Samurai are supposed to fight them if they ever get out of hand. I can imagine a conspiracy theory about how the royal family is secretly heathens, but nobody really thinks it’s real.
I can also see that the Minotaur survived for over a thousand years without being fed because the Samurai feed him. Like, they’re not allowed to go past that bridge, but they can dump dead bodies down there for him to collect. There’s this whole ritual where the bodies of Samurai and descendants of King Aquila are given to the Minotaur because he protects them from the Unclean Ones.

Nanashi Relic Headcanon
Half the fun when collecting relics is seeing the flavor text. We learn that Nanashi and Asahi had a mischievous sibling relationship, he was sickly as a child, and he admires the craftmanship of the nicer clothes. Also he’s a snotty millennial and disdains anything that a smartphone can do, like calculators.
Something we keep seeing is Nanashi suggesting uses for the stuff he carries. For example, a makeup case could hold spare ammo, you can spy on people with a cup by holding it to a door, and you can freeze a towel and hit demons with it. We never get the opportunity to use this; ammo (thankfully) never runs out, people just tell you things, and you always get proper weapons.
My headcanon is that some of these relic descriptions are faint echoes from when Nanashi was Akira. The demon invasion caught everyone by surprise, so before Akira joined the CDF and got actual equipment, he jury-rigged a lot of weapons. I was particularly wondering about the cup; that kind of espionage never really becomes important for Nanashi, but it might have been for Akira. Of course, this doesn’t apply to everything; Nanashi has an imagination, too.
