Blog 4: The Gift of Beauty
Nature reveals its complex patterns on the huge canvas of existence, inviting us to solve its riddles. Through a variety of artistic mediums, we are endowed with the exceptional capacity to interpret and communicate our comprehension of this gift of beauty. However, who are we to take on the job of translators, interpreting the language of nature into our own creative works?
Nature has always been an inspiration to artists because of its endless landscapes, varied ecosystems, and constantly shifting seasons. The natural world's beauty has served as a source of inspiration for artists throughout history, inspiring anything from prehistoric cave drawings to modern digital artwork.
An expanded set of 15 principles and related gifts are put out by Beck et al. (2018) to help interpreters in their endeavour to comprehend and express the essence of nature via art. These guidelines act as a compass, helping us to thoughtfully interact with the priceless gift of beauty that nature bestows upon us while negotiating the precarious line between admiration and interpretation.
We - as interpreters - acknowledge the immensity and complexity of nature's fabric with humility. By doing this, we are made aware that our interpretations are only reflections and glimpses into a reality that is much bigger than anything that could fit on a painting or in a frame. This humility serves as the basis on which artists/we can genuinely connect with nature.
Nature has always been a profound source of inspiration in my life, and my connection with it deepened through the lens of my dad - who I've mentioned previously.
One vivid memory stands out—the day he won an award for a breathtaking landscape photo. The image, a beautiful rock formation in Iceland, was a testament to his keen eye and skill behind the camera.

The award was a recognition of his talent and a shared triumph for us. Seeing his photograph hung on the walls of a local restaurant was amazing. It was as if a piece of our shared appreciation for nature had become a part of the community's daily experiences. The photograph also found its way into a magazine with a small blurb about my dad, reaching a broader audience and becoming a small yet meaningful contribution to the celebration of nature's richness.
As I reflect on this experience, I realize how my dad's photography became a bridge between nature and the community. Through his lens, he didn't just capture landscapes; he froze moments of beauty that resonated with people, inviting them to appreciate the world around them.
In those instances, I understood the transformative potential of art—it has the ability to evoke emotions, tell stories, and foster a collective appreciation for the gift of beauty that nature bestows upon us.
We must see the dynamic interaction between chaos and order in nature in our role as interpreters. Equipped with this knowledge, we are able to depict beauty in all its glory, enabling artworks to resonate with the natural world's innate rhythm.

Church in Wild Winter
It turns our there is a church in the wild, here in the remote wilderness of Iceland stands a small church with a red roof. Contrasted by the snowy hills and mountains which become it's backdrop. A small place of shelter from the wild weather of the far north landscapes.

As @rrothermel and I roadtripped through the west of #Iceland I finally caved and got some yarn. Showing remarkable restraint, I got just enough for a hat. Though green and black are my favorite colors, I chose these colors because they reminded me of the moss and grass growing on the black lava rocks. I made the pattern up as I went, but attempted to make it similar to Icelandic traditional knitting motifs, though I have a tendency to make the spikes even pointier. In the end they remind me of little green kayaks, but it was so fun creating something inspired by a landscape while driving though it, it gives it a genuine narrative it wouldn't have otherwise. Each part of it is imbued with memories of the different places we saw during it's construction. I'll post more photos from the trip when I have time to sort through the thousands I took. . . .
