I noticed he was the only one in some form of color other than the sea of black around me. Looking at his bare neck I was suddenly reminded by the constricting tie that coiled around mine. He was an absolute madman; cackling and hollowing in prolonged shots of laughter. It reverberated and bounced back against the stone cold walls of the solemn train. Though no one shared his enthusiasm I can’t help but faintly shake my head, a ghost of a smile played on my lips. He seemed to notice the smiling phantom I had on because as he descended to his stop he turned to look at me briefly with wrinkled eyes and a flushed face: “It won’t kill you to laugh once in a while you know..” He whipped his head one more time and said more loudly: “Don’t be like them!”. The doors shut, the train rolled on, and I was left wondering what it must feel like to be that mentally healthy.

Short Fictional Story: Written by Yours Truly ❤️

The petite old lady looked at me with crinkling eyes that glimmered nonetheless, her "tour guide" red handle flipping this way and that. She was busy talking about the architecture while I glazed my eyes on the portraits around the disheveled ballroom, I liked stories not buildings. I heard her soft footsteps before she reached me her low voice light on my ears: "You know this used to be a place of music, dance, and dreams like a fairytale." I turned my head towards her, eyes now brimming with awe and weirdly I noted an aching longing. Nodding once towards the paintings I sighed: " I look at them and I swear I almost hear them. I look at these empty walls and can't help but feel that a dull echo is emitting; invisible but not gone". I felt foolish but the old lady kept staring with such intent that I went along. "I hear heartache ebbing from this woman in the Navy gown, I see a tear streaked cheek on this man even though his portrait is of him smiling". It's true I can't point out why but I always felt like I knew these people, resonated with them. It's a reason why I love museums more than anything else. History breathes in me like a steady creature. The old woman simply smiled and said: "You find magic in the most unexpected". She walked with more airiness than before. And as she reached the doorway I gaped in astonishment as she transformed into the woman with the navy gown. I parted my lips to say something but in the next second she vanished into thin air.
