DP3 - Research Project - Mediator Spaces

Week 3:

This week, I started by doing the mappings at different scales, studies the bathymetric, sand movement and borehole information of the site.

I kept exploring materials by casting oysters, sand, rocks and plaster at different mixing ratios. The sample with oysters on the outer layer is very interesting as it can be sacrificial and protective.

For next week, I need to test them structurally to gain a better understanding of their performance. It is also very interesting to view the group of samples as an evolution, from moist and smooth to the state of degraded, just like the aging of human skin or biodegradation of human corpse. I should focus on how I can design the exterior and interior on envelope of the spaces, linearly or non-linearly in terms of degrading, to make the building's time-reverse narrative clear in itself and expressed on sections and plans.

The materials samples can be designed to form different parts of a tile system as well.

I need to consider the key environmental factors such as moisture, light, tide and waves to activate all of the people's senses in creating evocative spaces. It is also worth of exploring how I can create different experiences for people visiting multiple times, which can be a time-based strategy as well.

best of the year, 2022

i have not been as active over here as i intended to be, mostly because between my band, my life, and my job, i just haven’t had a ton of time to sit down and write. i’d like to say i’ll do more of it in 2023, but i know better than to lie to you or me.

however, that does not mean that i haven’t had time to listen to music — quite the opposite.

i bought a *lot* of music this year, and had no real regrets for any of my purchases, but here are some of my favorites from the year 2022. most links will be bandcamp unless there’s a good reason to link elsewhere. these are things i *heard* this year, not necessarily things that were released this year, though most of them were. 

first up, DRUG CHURCH. these dudes get a lot of buzz for sounding like the 90s, which they do, but i don’t think i quite agree with the grunge comparisons they get — to me, they sound a lot more like late 90s hardcore bands like AS FRIENDS RUST, albeit with some of the bigger, more creative guitar sound of 90s alternative bands like, amongst others, SMASHING PUMPKINS. 

i’m never not going to be an ARCHERS OF LOAF superfan, and i was absolutely fucking stoked to hear they had a new record coming out this year. this record is very, very good, and maybe my favorite since ICKY METTLE, which came out roughly 6,000 years ago. a lot of 90s-era indie bands have made returns to the stage in recent years, but these guys are one of the few who i feel like really grew in the intervening years — this song has as much of THE WHO in it as it has chapel hill, which i think is grand. 

BIG JOANIE seem to be blowing up everywhere, and for good reason, they’re fantastic. i’ve written about them a couple of times, so i won’t go too much more into detail here, but if you haven’t yet heard them, check this one out — if you get the time, check out the video, too, which is a sweet and lovely vignette of young friends and lovers. 

ELLEN RIPLEY HYPERSLEEP are a japanese band that i stumbled across on twitter (i think) who, if i had lottery money, i would fly out to the united states to do a west coast tour with. they’re a really, really great mix of synth-y 80s and early 90s new wave, but with a lot of very good shoegaze sensibilities. they’re a little hard to find, but they’ve got a youtube channel and they’re on spotify, so go check them out, everything they’ve done is great and i’m really hoping they start to gain ground, either in japan or worldwide.

years ago, when i lived in denver, i remember LEON BRIDGES playing at the ogden theater right after he broke out and thinking that he maybe wasn’t quite ready for that level of audience just yet — the show got moved to the ogden from a much smaller venue at the last minute. fast forward to 2022, and he’s working on really innovative and incredible R&B and soul, this time, with the unflappable khuangbin. 

LOS BITCHOS weren’t new in 2022, but this record was, and it’s a delightful spring and summer record to play with the windows open. they get a lot of totally justified comparisons to THE GO-GOs, but i think people sort of snooze on the way they’ve also got a sound that’s similar to some of LUSH’s best work. also, their percussionist might be the best drummer i’ve heard all year, really creative and technically precise. 

i really like jazz, but i am not, like, a jazz-knower — i just hear things, like them, and sometimes buy them. this JOHN PATTON reissue was a good example; i came across it on bandcamp, loved it, and bought it even before the first song ended. 

i have been absolutely thrilled by the resurgance of of electro, new wave and post-punk in recent years, and LEATHERS absolutely hit all of the sweet spots here. LEATHERS are a side project of another great canadian band, ACTORS, but whereas ACTORS are a little louder, more rock, and a touch grimier, LEATHERS are all neon and cool. 

speaking of cool, neon and electro, 2022 saw the return of one of my personal favorites, LADYTRON. i am stoked as fuck to catch them on one of their very few US dates next year, because everything i’ve heard from this new record so far sounds like a return to their classic LIGHT & MAGIC sound, which is somewhere in my top 50 favorite records of all time. 

i’ve included them on a couple lists before, but SOFT KILL’s CANARY YELLOW may get my album of the year. it’s a bummer that this may end up being the last record they put out, but if you’ve got to go, you can do a lot worse than going out on at the top of your game.

The future ain't my friend…

SOFT KILL have triumphantly returned w/ their latest album titled ‘CANARY YELLOW’ (Cercle Social) & it finds the venerable group showing no signs of slowing down while further pushing their sonic sensibilities & proving that they’ll never succumb to weak ass pigeonholing. 

The PDX-based fam, consisting of Tobias Grave, Conrad Vollmer, Danny Deleon, Shaun Durkan & Nicole Colbath have (& stop me if you’ve heard this one before) once again defied expectations while blowing minds, facing down demons & mending hearts on these latest strummed up & Mats-esque offerings.

There’s no half-measures when it comes to SK, everything the lauded unit produces carries a weight, purpose & an attention to detail that separates them from their modern peers. From production choices to curated merch to touring lineups & new sonic directions… nothing is left to happenstance or succumbs to outside influence or coercion.

Straight up, Soft Kill are thee band of our (& their) era… that’s not hyperbole nor influenced by personal moments I’ve spent with them, it’s simply a proper fact. SK are simply on another level as they find themselves in a constant state of evolution, growth & maturity in both their sound & business practices.

One cannot speak of Soft Kill without recognizing just what they’ve accomplished as a unit. They’ve reshaped an entire eco system while sticking around long enough to see their influence come to fruition in real time. In a modern world/scene of clout chasing, content producing & overall ladder climbing they’ve manage to be an honest to god fatherly influence, passing down knowledge to their younger peers while showcasing the fact that band merch could be more than a black shirt laid on a plastic table.

The lives/personalities that make up Soft Kill are all too human… & oh boy do they have the stories & scars to prove it. But that’s what we love, adore & admire about them… their ability to neatly wrap life’s messes in a guitar-driven pop song.

‘Canary Yellow’ is Soft Kill’s nod to the midwest, from the Chicagoan detail to the richly specific sound that pulls from those top-tier legends like The Replacements & Husker Du who bestowed a never ending impression on the American guitar rock scene. And one cannot speak of ‘Canary Yellow’ w/out mentioning how crisp these 10 tracks sound thanks to Rob Schnapf’s production.

After Joey welcomes us to SK’s latest opus, “Cracked Candles” gets things off to a proper start, but at what cost as the proceeding 3 1/2 mins unfurl in strummy fashion before kicking into gear while “Magic Garden” bursts outta the gate w/ a fury of twanged six-strings & driving low-ends before settling into a idyllic groove that creates an ideal bed for Tobias Grave’s pristine vocal.

“Rocks & Blows” is a beautiful piece of power_popped goodness that packs plenty of giddy-up & neat little flourishes while album highlight “Dibs” is a somber slice of dourly jangled GloomPop that bristles under the weight of Graves’ beautifully brittle vocal take.

The fact that Soft Kill could turn over a whole ass song to another artist, as they’ve done on “The Line,” further shows their meticulous nature & unbridled prowess as Ruth Radelet knocks it outta the (Comiskey) park on this tenderly somber ode while “Congratulations Text” finds PDX-based group forever proving they’ll always be there to push the emotional envelope as vocalist Tobias hits one of his finest performances to date as he rides a full bodied arrangement that swings from rangy indie, w/ a pinch of well placed twang, to a lively rocker before melding into the best of both worlds which sits comfortably as a moody Midwest blast of Gloom.

“Domino” is a piano tickled piece of Cure-esque DreamPop & ofc SK would give us a whole new take on “Cicero” because that’s what they do, they never shortchange us while closer “Lake Shore Drive” is not something a modern “post_punk” band would even dare attempt w/ its slowly unfolding saga built around groggy spoken word passages.

‘Canary Yellow’ once again finds Soft Kill leaving their mark on whatever modern scene you subscribe to & doing so their way.
