Vandaag, 29 juni 2021, bestaat het Bart Verbeeck Fonds voor Sarcoomonderzoek 10 jaar! Een jubileum waar we erg trots op mogen zijn.

Het fonds werd opgericht door Barts Weg vzw in samenwerking met de KU Leuven en het UZ Leuven en heeft als doel alle ingezamelde gelden te besteden aan onderzoek gerelateerd aan (Ewing) sarcoomkanker, de kanker die Bart heeft gehad.

In de afgelopen 10 jaar zijn we erin geslaagd een prachtig bedrag van € 300.000 te verzamelen om dit onderzoek te steunen. Onze dank gaat hiervoor uit naar alle vrijwilligers, alle bezoekers en alle weldoeners om onze evenementen te vormen tot wat ze zijn geweest: uniek. We hebben steeds Bart zijn boodschap ‘Geniet van het leven’ als uitgangspunt beschouwd zo was hij er tijdens elke actie bij in onze gedachten.

Het afgelopen jaar is, op vlak van mogelijkheid tot organiseren van evenementen, moeilijker geweest. Maar we hopen in de toekomst onze acties terug te kunnen opstarten en zo het sarcoomonderzoek te blijven ondersteunen. We zijn op de goede weg, maar er nog lang niet. Om de vooruitgang van de onderzoekers te volgen, kan je hun tussentijdse updates lezen in het tabblad ‘Bart Verbeeck Fonds voor sarcoomonderzoek’.

👉🏻Meet Ivan. He’s such a handsome & good boy. His owner noticed a #skin mass at the region of his left humerus (upper arm bone). 👉🏻She was concerned because although the mass was quite small, it was getting firmer. 👉🏻Any skin mass that is changing (regardless of size), is larger than a pea, and/or has been present for >1 month should be aspirated. As @drsuecancervet says: #seesomethingdosomething #whywaitaspirate 👉🏻Ivan’s #cytology (cell evaluation) was concerning so we had a board-certified #veterinary #surgeon remove the mass for a #biopsy. The biopsy showed the skin mass was a #cancer called a #softtissuesarcoma. 👉🏻Since the surgeon was able to remove the skin mass entirely, Ivan’s skin cancer is cured! 🙌🏻 👉🏻The take-away: No one - not even a veterinarian - can simply look at or touch a skin mass and know if it is benign or cancerous. November 9, 2017 I went into the OR for my Colorectal Cancer surgery. Little did we know my surgery would take 12 hours instead of the 6-8 the surgeon said it would. During surgery an artery was cut and I required 5 transfusions during surgery. I was placed in a medical coma for 7 days to weak to breathe on my own. I received another 4 transfusions, rehab, 2 Wound Vacs, IV antibiotics Vancomycin (top dog of antibiotics), 2 months in the hospital, 5 months dealing with wound vac changes 3 times a week, Wound Clinic for 7-8 months, chemo for 8 months and one full year of healing. Cancer is a mean mf bitch! Cancer doesn't care who it hurts. How it hurts. The lives it takes. Messes it makes. The hearts it breaks. Things Cancer cannot take: My Hope, strength, courage, passion, love for life, family, friends, memories, the present (what I have right now cancer cannot touch). Live each day to the fullest! Never thought I had to say this again in #cancer remission Now I am a #sarcomasurvivor as well as #breastcancersurvivor Battled cancer 2x in last 3.5yrs I am #mentally & #physically done no more too much to handle when #diagnosed again I called and cried to my #parents saying sorry I need to go to hospital when got the word Never did I think about getting it again in their life time. Had to tell others it’s not a #cancer recurrence bc it wasn’t #breastcancer my second battle was a secondary cancer #softtissuesarcoma a rare one only seen in women like a 1% chance. No one wants to see their #doctor on #valentinesday BUT when I heard in remission I started to glow. I do #fear cancer now because the unknown my likely of breast is still a 0.03% while sarcoma is unknown since for them only seen my type 3x in 17yrs, will be closely monitored for 2yrs by my #oncology team @hoaghealth Still have a wound but want me walking more to build strength I’ve been given a hall pass for a mini trip for few days TBA later but couped up in home/hospital for 4mos has been driving me 🙃 Right now will use my energy to fight #government regarding my #disability #socialsecurity I’ve been in & out of fighting cancer 2x since Nov 2015 with a lot of #sideffects #nervedamage from #treatment BUT someone without knowing my healthy just sees I have my sis as a roommate or now living w parents that they should be #supporting me #finanically when I have paid into the system since I was 17. What is OsteoSarcoma?

The cancer cells in these tumors look like early forms of bone cells that normally help make new bone tissue, but the bone tissue in an osteosarcoma is not as strong as that in normal bones
