How I Met Your Mother
Summary: Juice tells Rosalie about how he and OC Trinity met. Click here for a snippet of a future story Letters! As always 18+
“How are my favorite ladies?” inquired Juice as he strolled into the kitchen kissing Trinity before ruffling Rosalies hair.
“Good. Running a bit late tonight, gymnastics took longer than usual, so I ordered pizza for dinner. Both your ladies have homework to get done” laughed Trinity as she got up from her seat to grab some water.
“I’m going to have to start a class just to keep up with you two brainacs” laughed Juice as he slumped into his chair between the two of you. The smile on his face only growing as he relaxed into dad and husband mode. As much as he loved his MC family it would never come close to the love he had for his girls. The family he had built. While some of the guys struggled to maintain both and eventually gave up and let the MC take over he never would. He had come to Charming with you two and he would leave with you two and never look back if needed.
“Daddy can you help me with my homework?” inquired Rosalie as she slid closer to him.
“Of course. Go easy on me though Ro, I’m just a simple guy” replied Juice as he winked at Trinity as she snorted and shook her head.
“It’s easy Daddy.” Giggled Rosalie as she slid her homework sheet over. “How did you and mommy meet? It’s for a family history project.”
“Ohhhh, that should be easy” stated Juice as he nodded looking up wide eyed at Trinity. Rubbing his neck his eyes begged for assistance. Not that he didn’t know but he was not sure how much would be appropriate to share.
“You got this babe. I believe in you” assured Trinity as she smiled at him before taking her seat and going back to her own school work.
“Will you write it for me to?” inquired Rosalie with a sweet smile.
“Rosalie” stated Trinity giving her a look over her laptop. Once the young girl had nodded Trinity gave Juice another smile before going back to typing.
“Well Ro” stared Juice as he played back his memories of his teen years. “It was a cold winters night in Queens, New York. The wind was fierce and blustery. Just about blew me all the way to Mexico the way it was going. Snow was waist deep, I was trudging along to a local arcade. I had money from my……job to burn”
“What was your job daddy and how old were you?” interrupted Rosalie as she took notes.
“I…umm…. Helped people find this on the internet and I was sixteen.” Replied Juice not missing the chuckle from Trinity at his job title.
“So you were like google?” inquired Rosalie as she glanced up at him.
“Something like that” replied Juice. Once she had nodded he continued his story.
“So I bust into the arcade. Pretty much frozen solid, practically looking like a snowman.” Exclaimed Juice making Rosalie laugh as she wrote. “When my eyes befell a beauty I had never seen before. She shown like the sun, so bright and hot my eyes watered. Her smile and laugh were so warm that they defrosted me on the spot. I made my way over to where this damsel was standing and before I could say anything she looked at me. I was frozen on the spot as I fell in love, I was enchanted so to speak.” Reminisced Juice as he leaned back in the chair dramatically covering his eyes.
“Then what?” inquired Rosalie.
“Then your mother punched me, took my wallet and disappeared like the snow witch she is” stated Juice as the doorbell rang.
“Daddy I need the real story” whined Rosalie as Juice stood to get the door. Motioning to Trinity to sit back down as she moved to get up.
“Alright alright. The truth is I stumbled over myself and your mom took pity on me and played some shooting game for hours and then just never left me” called Juice as he moved to the front door.
“Run your homework upstairs and then get washed up for dinner” stated Trinity as Rosalie packed her backpack up as Juice walked in with the pizza.
“So close to the truth” laughed Trinity once Rosalie was upstairs making Juice laugh as he got plates out.
“Well figured I shouldn’t tell her daddy was a hacker and mommy was the romantic interest and business partner of a mob like guy who daddy fucked over and was wanted by” stated Juice as he shook his head and Trinity laughed. “We are already the talk of the school for our ages and me being in the MC, can you imagine the pearl clasping and whispers if they knew our origin story?”
“We have always been the talk of any town babe. Real stars you and I” replied Trinity as she closed her laptop and kissed him. “I wouldn’t have it any other way though” she whispered.

Apples and Bears
I have a big weekend coming up, I should be resting a bit. However.
I did sleep in a bit, then took the dogs out to the far field to cut some brush. I've been just cutting a small section per day, then leaving the tops where Nutmeg can browse them. Rosalie has been improving a little bit every day on 'farm dog' behavior. This morning, her two-week anniversary, she stayed near me for a while as I worked, then moved away and hung out near Chance and Lady. I saw her play-bowing to Chance, which was adorable, but he can't really engage in chasing anymore. At any rate, she was within reasonable distance at all times and came right back to me when I was ready to leave. 10/10
Using vile trickery and corn, I managed to confine almost all the young chickens, then release all the roosters but the one I want to keep. Later on I can pinion the ones I haven't already done and confine ALL the keepers in the chicken run for a while. There are only five roosters to butcher, so that won't be too bad.
Back at the house I spent two solid hours on soup, apple pie, and kitchen cleanup. I am, frankly, wiped at this point. Still have to take artwork to town and probably help K with chemistry homework. Dinner will be the mushroom soup that I just finished, so I'm ready to go on that.
A neighbor called during the morning to tell me he'd shot a small bear, and did I want the meat? Yes, I do. That's going to be a BIG butchering project for me, though. Butcher, freeze, can, etc. So that's kind of a combo Yay!/OhNo! moment. Canning meat isn't difficult, per se, but quite time consuming. Bear sausage? Many ideas to ponder.
Tomorrow, sitting in town at the Art Tour, will feel easy in comparison.

Snippet! This is just a small section of something special!
She’s been doing her best to help me find a way to deal with all that stuff. Right now, she and I are in the clubroom, sitting at two of the desks in the back of the room, side by side, and talking. She asked Monika about a week ago if the two of us could start closing up the clubroom after the meetings, to which Monika agreed. When I said Papa would get angry if I’m home past curfew, Sayori said she’d walk me home every day and apologize to him, explaining she’s the Vice President and needed assistance with planning for the festival. It’s been working for the most part, considering the most reaction he’s been giving me has been a heavy sigh and telling me to go to my room or make something for myself to eat. So that’s good.
Sayori started doing this, though, because she’s really wanting to help me deal with all this feeling stuff. “It’s not good for you to keep this all bottled up till the glass breaks!,” she keeps telling me, which I tell her, “Sayori, you really can’t be talking,” in return. We kinda bonded over it. She’s been trying to give me little “assignments,” coping things to try that night and come back to update her on it. How it went, how it felt…
Yesterday, the “assignment” was to start a journal. Notebook, diary, whatever you wanna call it. I told her I tried that before, only ending in Papa finding it, reading through every single page of my heart poured out onto paper, and ripped each one out afterwards, tearing them to shreds and burning them to bits. She thought about it, trying to find an alternative.
“Well… it doesn't have to be a solid notebook-? I mean, it could be the backs of assignments or scrap paper you have lying around! Just a place to write out how you’re feeling, like a poem without all the brainstorming on how to word it or make it make sense?”
…huh.
“Sooo, how did it go? The writ-”
“Yeah, yeah. Uh… I only got frustrated and angry.”
Sayori gave me a look that I don’t even know how to explain, but she looked like she was asking me to keep talking with her eyes. It was always really weird when she did that - or when anyone did that, for that matter - but I kept going.
“I kept messing up spelling and the order of stuff I was writing, but I couldn’t erase it because my dumbass decided to write in pen, so the paper just has all the ugly scribbled-out words every few words, and it irritated me. So I quit writing.”
“...can I see?”
…what?
“You wanna see the absolute flaming trash I wrote while trying to work out my feelings? Yeah, I don’t think so. What’s next on your… fuckin’... growing list of homework?”

Restarting... again?
Good morning! Evening? I can't tell anymore! Night shift has permanently scuffed my sense of time.
Sorry it's been a little bit! I've been on a bit of a mental health bender as of late and, to be honest, I'm not quite sure how I survived. But that's okay! We're here now, and talking about the car game from last time.
I was working on this thing for a month or so, getting a solid core loop playable and *almost* ready for a network test. The last thing on the to-do list was... a functioning lobby system.
Guess what I couldn't do?
Look, I'm not going to bullshit you, I figured out how to do some multiplayer stuff, but all of that knowledge was when players were already connected to the server. I didn't know shit about connecting and disconnecting players properly. That plugin I was using? MultiPlay Core? It's a good addon! But it didn't really fit my needs, and I couldn't fix it myself. After a lot of ruminating on it and passing the idea back and forth at a friend, I think it's finally time to look for greener pastures.
I wanted to restart development of the game, again, with Unreal Engine. The idea this time being that if I need to look for assets, I can do it through Fab, and with Unreal being *literally purpose built for online multiplayer*, then this shouldn't be as bad to figure out, or that I can buy a functioning lobby system that I can customize, and then I can focus on the stuff I'm good at, which is building the features of the damn game.
It has taken me... a lot longer than I thought it would to get re-acclimated to Unreal Engine. I spent a few weeks taking notes on actual courses from Gamedev.tv (not sponsored, but ill take it if they offer!) and giving myself a little homework project to focus on for a bit. It's nothing really exciting, its a small ball-roller game, but I think it helped me really get back into it and focus on learning and retaining how to use this engine.
That being said... I might shelf this for a little bit. I've been kinda... I don't really know how to describe it, but I think I've been dead set on this project for a little too long. I think I need a break and to try and work on a few smaller projects for now. I still want to release a game for Steam this year! But with my mental health always in the gutter, I think I need a small victory or two before I take up a medium-ish project like this again.

Wanted to share some info about my OCs from my fic The Patron.
A few quick notes about these OCs, this is from an AU by dullgecko in which Riz becomes like an urban legend in Elmville after death with a statue that helps with homework. I thought, since he'd be a Celestial as he joins his dad in Bytopia, Riz could become a Patron for some warlocks. The Patron is about one of them.
These OCs were designed using this picrew
If you want to draw them, feel free to take liberties.
OCs under the cut
Spoilers for up to the end of Junior Year.
Anbrea Flintheart (She/Her)
Anbrea is a Dwarf who is a Celestial Warlock. Cis Female.
A by the book warlock, but was kicked out of her house after loosing favour with her family's patron. Is now living at the LeFlair house. Early Sophomore year, she gets Riz to be her patron.
She is very feminine and loves wearing dresses and pink. Especially pink dresses. She loves styling both her hair and her beard. Her arcane focus are her earrings.
Rinan Silvershadow (He/Him)
A Half-Elf Inquisitive Rouge. Cis Male
(Note, I intended on him having suspenders but the picrew didn't have any)
He lives with his dad with his older sister who is a wizard. Growing up, he was the amateur sleuth of the neighbourhood. He helped kids when they lost their pets or when their bikes go missing.
His revolver belonged to his mother; who passed shortly after he was born.
Pilk LaFlair (They/Xer)
A Goblin Barbificer. Non-Binary
Lives with their two moms. Considers Anbrea their best friend and invited her to live with them after she was kicked out of her house.
Xer big project is an mech for them to wear in combat. Think like something Steel would wear. Including the hammer.
Theo Cubby (He/They)
A Halfling Fighter. Non-Binary.
They work at their family coffee shop which is right across from where the former police prescient was. Apparently, the family put it there to keep their eyes on the new system of law enforcement.
He is a pretty easy-going guy. Often the one to give solid advice.
Karrus Brightskin (He/Him)
A Minotaur Swarmkeeper Ranger. Cis Male
The more serious member of the party. A braincell holder.
He lives on a bee farm with his grandmother; this is how he got his swarm.
Has the history feat.
Claire Applebees (She/Her)
A Human, College of Lore Bard. Trans Female.
She is working on a violin cover of Dawn of Justice. Currently dating a cleric of Ankarna.
Her bardic inspiration is saying "Let's DO this!"
#fantasy high#fantasy high oc#fantasy high junior year#fantasy high sophomore year#fhsona#not really but seems to be another tag to use for ocs as well#study goblin au#patron!riz

ok here's that Spider-Man AU I came up with:
University AU, but with a twist + the origin of the AU itself (aka, what inspired it, at the very bottom of the post)
Peter is the freshman newbie and they're not actually trying to cause trouble, they're just really enthusiastic and enjoying life to its fullest before they graduate at the tops of their classes and as the heads of their fields.
shirtless frat bro energy Mysterio who will probably go hand to hand with Spider-Man despite not having super powers himself. wrap his arm around Peter and give him actually good solid advice while Peter is trying not to gag over Beck's hairy pits.
what if they want Peter to join their fraternity family and they're genuinely good people, but they keep giving Peter a friendly fight on the university's school grounds every breakfast, lunch, and dinner. the way he gets in is if he defeats all of them.
he's done that and they consider him an honorary member even tho he keeps rejecting them and just wanting to stick to his small clique.
but over time he can't deny he does enjoy their eccentric personalities and their energetic personalities are contagious. He does go to them to get help with his homework tho for his various classes so he can try to impress his crush(es)
I think Otto would secretly enjoy theater and watch Beck do his performances and even aid him in practice.
everyone would cheer on and praise Otto for his crazed inventions and even the mad creation of the Actuators
Max being a party guy.. his hair is like.. frosted tips and spiked up with his own static electricity
I think Max would probably have given himself electric powers when he was younger cuz of a crazy stupid stunt he pulled that backfired, BUT HE SURVIVED!!
he uses the electrical abilities as his little.. party trick. always does something with it to try and impress the ladies lol he isn't allowed in the pools tho. obvious reasons.
he ended a party early once and learned the hard way why he shouldn't get into the water when others are present. (no one died thankfully!)
Otto has the patience of a SAINT when it comes to helping out Rhino with his homework so he can join them when they graduate. he cares for his homeboys, wants to see them succeed.
Mysterio is a jack of all trades. he is an art student to the bone, but he tries to party and wrestle and be more like a jock than he actually is. probably accidentally huffed some paint and drank the paint water once while delusional from pulling an all-nighter to finish his project/assignment on time.
Chameleon & Kraven are transfer students from Russia and they're both unbelievably pompous and eccentric.
chameleon being the guy you go to if you want the highest quality fake IDs. he makes them himself
Flint is also an art student, but he does those pottery things. he does it on the side and tries to keep up with the sports teams of the university instead, trying to keep up a tougher facade, but he just really likes making pottery and sculptures. finds them relaxing and will stay late to make them. people think he stayed up partying even tho they don't remember seeing him at any parties on campus. they just make the assumption and he always plays along. he submits his works to the school under a false name that the school is aware of and have agreed to in order to keep his privacy.
Rhino keeps the secret, having discovered him one night. stumbling upon Flint spinning some clay and while being a bit tipsy, he just sits and watches. completely transfixed by the actions and effort.
They become the BEST of friends.
and Rhino, being much bigger than the others, will gladly protect and back up Flint
Screwball brought her entire gaming and live-streaming setup to the dorm room. brings her phone to the lectures and records herself or the professors/teachers.
she's def part of the news section and records all the fights Peter has with the Sinister Six fraternity
Kingpin is the one in charge of it. he owns the university. the head professor or whatever heck they're called.
Norman being the 2nd in command of the university. Harry does NOT get special treatment from his dad. but Norman DOES see promise in Peter and tries to bribe and coax him with free good grades/marks and more. Peter keeps denying the old man.
man gives him the creeps and he'd rather earn his good rewards with his hard work. it's more satisfying that way.
plus, he has the whole sinister six fraternity helping him out with all sorts of things. so it's fiiiinnee. he doesn't need Norman's help.
I firmly believe that by the end of the story, when everyone is graduating, Peter is definitely good friends with the Sinister Six and is really gonna miss them once the graduation ceremony is over.
all of them are gonna miss him too tbh
Also, here's the origin of this AU:
#ghostie mumbles#//long post#spiderman#spiderman au#I am not tagging all the villains/characters sjkdfhksdfhdf but this is a very amusing little AU

– BIOGRAPHY.
Hector was born in the working class, to parents who had fled Fidel Castro's regime and made ends meet while they raised him far away from home. Every day, after school, he would do his homework at his mother's desk, who worked as a receptionist in a paper company. His father was a florist working on farmer's markets. They were hard workers, who had big plans for their only son and they saved every month to put him in a proper school. While attending high school, Hector came in second in a competition organized by the British Academy for Science, for his research project on reducing water usage in agriculture, he participated to debate competitions and though he was happy to make his club's victory a collective effort, his extensive knowledge of social, political, economical issues was key into getting 1st place, and it was no surprise that he ended up president of this club as well as 3 others.
He joined college and at the same time officially signed up with the Labour Party as a full member and activist. His parents were involved in politics themselves, and from the moment he was old enough to hold flags at rallies and demonstrations, his father would hoist him up on his shoulders. They both took part in a worker's union, though his mother was the one most devoted to helping both workers and those most vulnerable.
He first did a double licence in sociology and political sciences at LSE, studied in Barcelona for a year with the Erasmus program, and got involved in activism there too. Followed two more years during which he worked on his thesis. He focused on the positive impact immigration had on the country, and while his work was applauded by his peers, he reaped a lot of bile and hatred from the opposition. The dichotomous controversial work ended up in the media. While progressive ones applauded his fresh stance on the question and commented on the depth of his analysis. Qualitative research combined with grounded theory made a solid ground to build his political program on. It didn't matter if some called him a ludicrous dreamer or a clown. Ad hominem attacks only confirmed what he already knew: he needed to take things further, he needed to become a candidate to local elected office.
He ran for council in his borough, Barking and Dagenham, in north eastern London. He fought against gentrification in the area, which would be made all the more painful with the 2012 Olympic Games and the quick evolution of the city in the years that preceded the event. Hector spent most of his free time listening to people who dedicated a lot of their energy, time, or even money for the local community. Eventually, when the time came for him to campaign again, this time for MP, he chose to rely only on their donations, refusing any money that came from corporations and lobbies. The people would be who he represented, not the interest of private companies. It was unconventional. It was risky. He might even lost the election because he fought against Goliaths. Fundraising and media relations was usually handled by professionals who saw the world through a lens filled with statistics and polls.
He shouldn't have won those elections, he supposed. When he won, upspent with a margin of 15 to 1 by his opponents, Hector couldn't believe how much support he had managed to gather through his years as a devoted borough councilman.
Hector, who was now a MP for a little over 10 years, was feeling tight in his shoes, and with the help of his husband, threatened his old LSE pal, none other than the Prime Minister, to reveal the contents of the treaty to the public. He knew the time was right for him. He was quite popular among the party, and his husband's ties with the conservatives made him much easier to accept for the Tories.
His party did get this much right: he represented a breath of fresh air, and those always got people talking. What they didn't get right, however, was this idea that Hector was so much better than your typical politician. Not one bit. He wasn't above shoving people under the bus, or using god awful tactics to get ahead of others. He might have been a likeable personality, with the kind of voice that you could have listened to even if it read the phone book, he also knew when crossing the line was necessary. After all, in a city like London, you couldn't possibly hope to survive being a good guy.

Welcome to Rental Realities of 2024! Whether you’re a long-time renter, a newbie to the rental world, or a landlord trying to keep up with the latest trends, you’ve come to the right place. This year, the rental market is buzzing with changes and new opportunities, and we're here to help you make sense of it all.
What’s New in the Rental Market This Year?
2024 has been quite the rollercoaster for renters and landlords alike. Here’s a snapshot of what’s shaping the rental landscape:
**1. Flexibility is the New Trend With remote work becoming the norm for many, people are looking for more flexible living arrangements. Short-term leases and month-to-month options are in high demand. If you’re a renter who likes to keep your options open, you’ll find plenty of properties that cater to this need. For landlords, offering these flexible terms can make your property more attractive to a wider range of potential tenants.
**2. Sustainability is on the Rise Eco-friendly living isn’t just a fad anymore—it’s a major factor in rental decisions. Many renters are now on the lookout for properties with energy-efficient features and sustainable practices. If you’re a landlord, investing in green upgrades like solar panels or energy-efficient appliances might just give you the edge you need in a competitive market.
**3. Tech is Taking Over Smart home technology continues to make waves. From smart thermostats that save you money on energy bills to security systems that give you peace of mind, renters are increasingly expecting these tech perks. If you’re a renter, don’t hesitate to ask about these features. And if you’re a landlord, incorporating smart tech could make your property stand out.
**4. Rising Rents and Budgeting Unfortunately, many areas are seeing an increase in rental prices. With inflation and high demand driving up costs, it’s important to budget carefully. Renters should be prepared for potential rent hikes, while landlords should stay aware of market trends to set fair and competitive rates.
**5. Community and Amenities Matter Renters are placing more value on community and amenities. Properties with access to gyms, co-working spaces, and green areas are becoming increasingly desirable. And let’s not forget about the neighborhood itself—good schools, local shops, and convenient transport links are huge pluses.
Tips for Renters in 2024
**1. Do Your Homework Before you sign on the dotted line, take the time to research the area. Check out local developments, future projects, and the overall vibe of the neighborhood. This can help you make an informed choice and avoid surprises.
**2. Consider Flexibility If your lifestyle allows, look into flexible lease options. Short-term leases or month-to-month agreements might give you the freedom you need, especially in these unpredictable times.
**3. Embrace Smart Living When searching for a new place, keep an eye out for smart home features. They can make your life easier and potentially lower your bills. Don’t be shy about asking landlords what tech upgrades are available.
**4. Budget Wisely With rental prices on the rise, it’s crucial to manage your finances carefully. Plan for potential rent increases and additional costs. A solid budget can help you stay on top of your expenses and avoid stress.
Tips for Landlords in 2024
**1. Go Green Consider making eco-friendly upgrades to your property. Not only will this attract environmentally conscious renters, but it could also save you money in the long run and boost your property’s value.
**2. Upgrade to Smart Tech Adding smart technology to your property can make it more appealing. Features like smart locks, thermostats, and security systems are becoming must-haves for many renters.
**3. Offer Flexibility With the demand for flexible leases growing, think about offering shorter-term options or customizable rental agreements. This can help you attract a wider range of tenants and reduce vacancies.
**4. Stay Informed Keep an eye on market trends and economic factors that might impact rental rates and tenant expectations. Staying up-to-date will help you make smart decisions and stay competitive.

How to Identify Quality Woodworking Tools at Auction?

Woodworking tool auctions can be a goldmine for finding high-quality tools at bargain prices, but identifying quality items requires a keen eye and some knowledge. Whether you're a seasoned woodworker or a newcomer, knowing what to look for can help you make informed decisions and avoid costly mistakes. Here’s a guide to help you identify quality woodworking tools at auction.
1. Understand the Tool’s Purpose
Before the auction, familiarize yourself with the tools you're interested in. Each woodworking tool has a specific function, such as cutting, shaping, or joining. Knowing the purpose of each tool will help you assess its condition and functionality. For example, a saw should have a straight and sharp blade, while a chisel should have a fine edge and a sturdy handle.
2. Check for Brand Marks and Manufacturer Information
While brand names are not the sole quality indicator, reputable brands often signify well-made tools. Look for any manufacturer markings or brand names on the tool. Research these names to understand their reputation and the tool’s quality. Older tools from well-regarded manufacturers can often be worth more and may have been crafted with higher standards.
3. Assess the Tool’s Construction
High-quality woodworking tools are typically made from durable materials and exhibit solid construction. Consider these aspects:
Material: High-quality tools are usually made from high-carbon steel, cast iron, or other robust materials. Check if the materials used match the tool’s intended use and look for any signs of inferior substitutes.
Craftsmanship: Examine the tool’s construction for signs of craftsmanship. Well-made tools will have tight tolerances, clean finishes, and precise assembly. Look for any signs of sloppy workmanship or parts that don’t fit together well.
4. Verify the Tool’s Functionality
If possible, test the tool to ensure it works as intended. For tools like drills, saws, or planes, see if you can operate them briefly to check their performance. For hand tools, such as chisels or saws, test their sharpness and functionality. Even if you can’t test the tool yourself, asking questions about its operation and performance can provide valuable insights.
5. Research and Compare
Do some research on the tools you’re interested in before the auction. Compare similar tools in terms of price, features, and condition. This will help you gauge whether the auction items are fairly priced and if you’re getting a good deal. Auction prices can vary, so having a baseline will help you make informed bidding decisions.
6. Ask Questions
Don’t hesitate to ask the auctioneer or seller questions about the tool’s history, condition, and any repairs or maintenance it may have undergone. Transparent sellers should provide information and answer your queries, which can help you assess the tool’s quality.
7. Bring a Knowledgeable Friend
If you’re new to woodworking or tool auctions, consider bringing along someone with experience. An expert eye can help spot issues you might miss and provide additional insights into the tool’s value and condition.
By paying attention to these details and doing your homework, you can increase your chances of finding quality woodworking tools at auction. With a bit of knowledge and preparation, you can make smart purchases that enhance your woodworking projects and offer great value.

COME AND GET YOUR LOVE | STANCY
chapter 3
“ up the water spout ”
ao3
back to main page

All Nancy wanted to do was sleep.
After her conversation with Steve in journalism, she tried her best to focus on the flyers. However, someone else had caught her attention. The one and only Jonathan Byers, head of the photography department. He had a way with words, acting introverted at the start but concluding with a sentence that usually caused Nancy to blush.
She was enamored by Jonathan. He was everything she looked for in a guy. Sweet, had a steady hobby, cared about his future, and knew how to dress. He was well-liked by the yearbook group and had a solid friend group with others. The two also shared classes so Nancy had ample opportunity to stare at the back of his head. All those things checked off Nancy's list, making her instantly have a crush on him. The only person who knew about this was Robin, and Nancy planned to keep it that way.
Not that she was embarrassed by the crush, it was just unusual. She never expected to fall for someone like Jonathan. Sure, he fit her perfect guy to a tee. However, Nancy felt that he might have been too good for her. What did Nancy have to offer him besides school and journalism? The idea of them dating seemed unreasonable.
Jonathan definitely wanted nothing to do with her.
Due to the distraction, Nancy was unable to finish her flyers or start her assignments for journalism. She usually never fell behind, but the day had kicked her in the ass. Steve Harrington was the bane of her existence, causing this whole shift in her schedule. Because of him, Nancy actually had to try and fit him in somewhere for the paper. Sadly, she wasn't able to make him clean the rest of the year.
During lunch, she tried her best to complete her assignments. The flyers were done, stacked on a desk next to her. Nancy typed away on the typewriter, trying her best to ignore the hungering pains in her stomach. Even after lunch, she still had a few things to do. In between, Nancy continued with her classes that provided even more assignments. She knew the burnout would hit today.
After school, she blew off Robin to finish her journalism assignments. All the girl had left was to assign projects for the October paper. Everyone was fairly easy to place, besides Steve Harrington. He was the worst. Of course, Nancy knew it would be too easy to fit him into sports. But the sports team was already too big, so Nancy decided against that. Instead, she placed Steve into review articles. Basically, Steve just had to go around and ask people about random assignments. It would keep Steve out of the class, and Nancy's sanity steady.
On top of journalism, Nancy took the rest of her work home. She hid away in her room, grinding out her homework. It only took her an hour or so, but Nancy hated falling behind. She constantly blamed herself when it came to school, the academic validation increasing as she got older. The only way Nancy could measure her success and happiness was through school. If she got less than a B, why should she even try? Everything was worth an A to her.
Nancy also thought of the future. She would be attending college next fall, which made her extra worried about her grades. Although that's not the only thing that mattered, it did help that she has had straight A's since the sixth grade. It also helped that she was consistent with journalism. But at the end of the day, she found herself thinking about the conversation with Ms. Kelley.
Tutoring would add even more to Nancy's plate. She found it challenging to handle school, journalism, and tutoring. However, Ms. Kelley had a point. If she couldn't handle that all at once, then why would any college want her? College is all about time management and balance, which was something Nancy needed to master.
Nancy wrapped up her work, releasing her stress with a full plate of dinner made by her mother and tying up the night with a nice, hot shower. She stood in the water for over thirty minutes, taking in the quiet time. The girl loved everything about a warm shower, especially after a long day.
She dressed herself in her favorite matching set and plopped onto her bed. Nancy stared at the ceiling, arms stretched out above her head. Her face went soft as she stared at the old patches of paint on the wall. They reminded her of her childhood, also known as pure bliss. How could she get back to that place? Be the girl who found happiness in things besides school?
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of her landline. Nancy shot up in her bed, gasping at the sound of the ringing. Before going to the phone, Nancy looked at her clock. How was it already half past nine? And who the hell was calling her so late at night?
She wanted to ignore it. All Nancy wanted to do was lay in bed and think of all the things going on in her life. But, what if Robin was on the line? She could've been in danger. Or something could've happened to Mike, Nancy's younger brother. And that's when the anxiety of something happening hit her hard. Sprinting toward the phone, she stared at it. Her brows furrowed before she picked up the landline.
"Hello?"
Silence. No one replied to her for a few moments, causing her cheeks to turn bright red. Had she been prank called?
"Nancy? It's Steve Harrington."
Oh, she had been prank called.
Before she could hang up the phone, Steve began to beg. "Before you hang up!"
Nancy clenched her fist around the phone tightly.
"I have a solution to all of our problems!"
Nancy froze. What problems had he been talking about? She didn't have any problems. At least ones that didn't concern Steve whatsoever.
"Excuse me?" She snapped, placing her spare hand on her hip.
"A solution!" Steve sighed. The boy pressed the tips of his fingers to the bridge of his nose. "I know your secret, Wheeler, and I can help."
Nancy's eyes went wide at Steve's words. What secret could he have been talking about? "This isn't funny, Harrington."
"I'm being serious!" Another sigh. "Byers! Jonathan Byers. I know you have a crush on him."
Steve tried his best to listen to the silence. He furrowed his brows as he didn't get a response. Pulling the phone away, he checked to see if his phone had disconnected. "Hello? Nancy?"
Nancy knew he was full of shit. How could he have known? There's no way in hell that Robin would say something. "A crush?" Nancy chuckled. "You're funny!" The girl tried her best to fight the feelings. "Wh-Why would I...Nancy Wheeler...have a crush on." Nancy cleared her throat. "Jonathan Byers?"
Steve felt the laugh in his throat, letting it explode. His laughter filled his bedroom and blew Nancy's eardrums. "God, Wheeler, you're pathetic."
Nancy sighed, crossing her free arm over her chest. "Very funny! I'm hanging up."
"Wait!" Steve cried out. He ran a hand through his sweaty hair before continuing. "I'm serious. I could get Byers to like you back, ya know kind of set you guys up."
Nancy's eyebrows furrowed. "What do you mean like me back? What if he already likes me?"
"He's doing a shit job at saying so." Steve scoffed. "Let's face it, Wheeler. You've got absolutely no flirtatious bone in your body. And you need my help to fix that!"
Nancy's cheeks turned bright red. She felt lucky that he wasn't in the same room as her right now. "That's not true! I...I..." Nancy sighed. "Yeah, you're probably right."
"I know I am! So this is what we're gonna do."
Nancy hated the fact that Steve was basically bossing her around. He was telling her the truth about irrelevant parts of her life that didn't seem important until now. It was a shame that Nancy never dated anyone, let alone barely speak to another guy. "What are we gonna do, Harrington?" Nancy crossed her arms over her chest as she leaned into the phone.
"I can't say over the phone." Steve paused. "Anyone could be listening right now."
"You can't be serious!"
"Dead. So dead, Wheeler." Steve grinned. Nancy swore she could hear it.
Steve figured that the perfect way to get Nancy hooked was to leave her at the edge of her seat. She would just have to know what the solution to her lack of flirting and boyfriends would be. Steve usually had this down perfectly, using the excuse to see a girl again for another hook-up session. Now, he was using it on Nancy Wheeler, someone he never thought he'd have to.
At the end of the day, though, Steve was going to get his way. It didn't necessarily matter if anything sparked for Nancy. All that mattered was whether or not he could bring his grades up, all while scoring the girl of his dreams.
Nancy, on the other hand, was having a hard time buying Steve's act. Why would Steve Harrington need a favor from her? And what did it have to do with her crush on Jonathan Byers? The whole situation piqued her interest, but she was still reluctant to fall for it. "I don't know. You're being too suspicious about all of this."
"Trust me, Nance," Steve smirked, knowing the nickname would get Nancy going somehow, someway.
"Trust you?" Nancy laughed. She couldn't stop, finding it hard to breathe. "You're out of your mind!"
Steve sighed. This was going to be tougher than he thought. Of course, Nancy was stubborn as a mule. But he knew he could break the ice just a bit. "Look, Nancy, I could really use your help. It's got to do with my future and...I know you care about yours, right?"
Nancy rolled her eyes. "Yes."
"So, what do you say about helping someone better their future? Even if that person is me?"
Nancy stayed silent. She began to contemplate, wondering if this was actually true or not. The girl knew how Steve was with other girls, and she didn't want to fall into that trap. But on the other side, she thought about the future. What if helping him would be a great thing to talk about in her application? Or what if it had to do with school? "You're fantastic at guilt-tripping people."
The answer only made Steve's smile widen. He wished Nancy was seeing his smile to show how genuinely happy he was. "So you're in?"
Nancy exhaled. "I guess so." Steve let out a cheer, causing Nancy to cringe. Her ears burned from the yelling. "Harrington!"
Steve stopped his cheering, clearing his throat. "Sorry, sorry. We need a meeting spot to discuss this plan, yeah?"
Nancy rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I guess."
Steve thought for a moment. Would it be too weird to have Nancy come over to his place? It might throw some people off, and Steve runs into the issue of potentially having Eddie and Billy come over, questioning why he can't hang out when Steve is at home by himself. He also didn't want anyone to drive by the house, risking their plans. It didn't make sense to have Nancy come to his house.
"I got it!" Steve smiled. "Your place."
Nancy's eyes went wide. She wished she could slap him across the face right now. "What? This is your plan, so it should be at your place."
Steve sighed. "I...I can't. My parents don't let girls come over during the week. It just wouldn't work out." His first of many lies slipped out of his mouth before he could stop himself.
The girl ran a hand through her hair, debating on whether or not Steve should come over. It would be strange, for one thing. If Nancy asked her mom, it would be the end of the world. How could she have gone from no boys to one of the most popular ones in Hawkins? Her mom would also want him to stay for dinner, which is the last thing Nancy wanted.
She glanced around the room, biting down on her bottom lip. Her eyes gazed until they landed on her window. Nancy grabbed her landline, dragging the device toward her window. She glanced out of the window, seeing that the roof of the garage did connect to her side of the house, creating the perfect platform to step on. Nancy nodded slightly, taking note of the water spout next to the roof. "You can come here."
Steve's smile only brightened. "Awesome!"
"But!" Nancy interrupted. "You'll come later tonight. Park down the street, and you're gonna climb up the water spout, get onto the roof, and sneak into my room through my window. Got it?"
Steve's smile turned into a sly grin. "Sneak into your room, huh?"
"You're an idiot, Steve Harrington." Nancy rolled her eyes. "2530 Maple Street. See you soon."
The girl hung up the phone before he could respond. Nancy wrapped her arms over her chest, rubbing her arms awkwardly. She felt ill knowing that Steve Harrington was coming over to her house. In secret. Through her window.
Nancy felt her heart sink as she threw herself onto the bed, counting down the seconds until Steve Harrington arrived.
———
Hours passed and Steve figured that it was time for him to go. He decided that it was best if he just rode his bike so that if his friends stopped by, they'd figure someone picked him up. After all, his car was in the garage, so he hoped they would see the missing car and move on with their lives.
Not that he was embarrassed by Nancy. Steve just found it difficult to cope with the fact that he needed help with school, as well as getting Chrissy to fall for him. And it made it even worse that he was getting help from Nancy Wheeler. Of all people, she was the last one he'd expect service from.
Steve wondered why Nancy agreed to help him. As he pedaled down the street, he tried to think of the many reasons why she would even want to be anywhere near him. His mind went blank, finding it difficult to come up with an answer. It was painfully obvious to him that Nancy Wheeler despised him.
Approaching Maple Street, Steve found himself gripping onto his handles tighter than ever. He was a bit familiar with this street due to several house parties taking place on this straight. It was one of the most common areas for suburban housing, which made Steve all the more anxious. His friends could pull up in a car out of nowhere. That thought only made him pedal faster, trying to focus on the sounds of the late-night crickets.
Despite the darkness, he managed to find her house. It was at the end of the cul-de-sac, standing tall and wide. His mouth went ajar a bit as he stared at the house. Steve left his bike down the street, adjusting his jacket as he made his way toward the house. He looked for the window, finding the only glowing one. It was next to the lower roof of the garage, indicating Nancy's room.
For some reason, Steve grew anxious. What if the two got caught? Nancy obviously wanted him sneaking around due to her strict parents or something. He slowly made his way toward the garage, studying the layout of the house. Steve's eyes darted toward the infamous water spout Nancy spoke of.
Glancing around, he jogged toward the spout. He looked back for a moment as he heard the faint sound of another bicycle. His eyes locked with a younger male. His face was full of disgust as he stared Steve down. The older male smiled awkwardly, waving toward the kid. He resembled Nancy slightly, both having dark hair and gleaming eyes. The younger boy rolled his eyes before biking down the street. "What the hell is he doing out so late?" Steve huffed.
Turning back around, Steve stared up at his destination. He reached up, gripping the water spout as he climbed up slowly. His feet slid slightly, a sigh escaping as Steve clenched onto a tough root. He pulled himself up, grunting a bit in the process. It was harder than he thought, and Steve wished he worked more on his upper body strength at the moment.
Taking a few more tries, Steve managed to make it halfway up the water spout. He gripped the edge of the roof, fingers clawing into the hard brick. He winced, pushing himself off the wall and pulling himself up. His body hung for a moment before he rolled onto the roof. Steve let out a deep sigh, running a hand through his hair. He hoped no one was watching his fiasco of a climb.
Glancing over, Steve looked into Nancy's window. He saw the vague outline of her body sprawled out on the bed. A grin appeared on his lips as he crawled toward the window, trying to be as quiet as possible. His fingers reached up, forming a fist. Steve watched as Nancy's chest rose and fell, soft breaths filling the air. In a quick flash, Steve banged against the window. He clutched his stomach as he laughed, watching Nancy practically jump out of her skin.
Nancy's heart began to beat faster than ever. The girl turned to the window, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights. Her face settled as she saw Steve laughing his head off. Her hands clenched into fists as she stormed toward the window. In a fit of fiery, Nancy threw open the window. "Are you insane?!" She whispered yelled.
Steve stifled his laughter, covering his mouth. "I'm so sorry, Nancy." He chuckled, shaking his head with the biggest grin on his lips. "That was too easy. Man, better hope no one ever comes up here, right?"
Nancy rolled her eyes before her famous scowl appeared on her lips. "Just come in." She moved to the side.
Steve nodded, crawling in through the window. It was a tight squeeze but he managed, to catch himself on the ground.
Nancy watched in amusement, loving how much Steve seemed to struggle. Her mood immediately went south as she noticed his shoes. "Take your shoes off. Now!" The girl demanded, watching as the mud almost stained her pillows in the bay window.
Steve only seemed to struggle more, trying his best to balance without getting his dirty shoes on her pillows and carpet. He managed, sitting on the floor with his feet in the air. Glancing at Nancy, he swore he could see the steam coming out of her ears. He slowly ripped his shoes off his feet, holding them in the air to reduce the amount of dirt he brought in.
"You're unbelievable," Nancy said. She grabbed the shoes, she tossed them out of the window. The girl hoped that somehow, someway, the shoes would disappear. She snapped the window tight, quickly wiping the excess dirt off of her bay window pillow. "Now, make this quick so I can reject the offer?"
Steve's neck snapped toward Nancy. There was no chance in hell that she made him come all the way over to her house just to reject his idea. "Reject? Why the hell did I come? You could've told me this on the phone." He stood up, cracking his back from the awkward fall from earlier.
Nancy's head tilted up to look at Steve. She never noticed how much taller he was compared to her. Having to look up at Steve made her blush, considering tallness was quite attractive to Nancy. Pushing the thoughts out of her head, Nancy pursed her lips. "I mean...I just don't really see how you knowing who my crush is will help out both of us. To me, it seems like perfect blackmail for you."
Steve thought for a moment. Nancy wasn't completely wrong—her crush did act as some sort of blackmail. A way to keep up her end of the deal. "I can explain it if you'd let me." Steve paused to put his hands on his hips. "But only if you promise to not reject it right away. Cause I know you will."
Nancy crossed her arms over her chest, face softening from his request. "Alright." She waltzed over to her bed, sitting on the edge. The girl moved down a bit and looked up at Steve, gesturing for him to sit down.
Steve watched as Nancy's demeanor fell, showing off a bit of a softer side. Her blue eyes were gentle and full of wonder, causing Steve to want to sit next to her. He was thankful that Nancy offered a seat on her bed. With a sigh, Steve sat down on Nancy's bed with ease. He scooted up a bit, lifting one of his legs to rest in an awkward but extremely comfortable position.
Nancy watched, her eyebrows furrowing along with her signature smug look. She moved over a bit, facing Steve completely by crisscrossing her legs on the bed. "I'm all ears, Steven."
"Just Steve." He said. "Alright, now. This plan. At first, it may sound a bit insane but I promise you. It'll work out so well for both of us." Steve lifted his pinky finger in the air.
Nancy stared at his finger, eyes flickering to see Steve's pure reaction. "What are you doing?"
Steve looked at his finger before sitting up completely. Their knees touched one another's, causing Nancy to flinch and Steve to blush a bit. "This? A pinky promise? A pretty common thing to do."
"How do I know I can trust you?" Nancy blurred out. She bit down on her bottom lip, staring into Steve's dark eyes.
His eyes flickered for a moment, catching sight of Nancy's baby blues. "Just promise me."
Nancy let out a sigh. How was she so sure to trust Steve? But alas, she hooked her pinky finger around his.
With a smile, Steve hugged Nancy's finger with his own before letting go. "Okay. Just to jump right in." Steve paused to prepare himself for the wrath of Nancy Wheeler. "We fake date each other."
Nancy's eyes grew wide as the words slipped out of his mouth. "What?!" She yelled, covering her mouth as fast as she could. Nancy prayed no one in the house had heard her. Removing her hand, she stared at Steve with disgust. "Are you insane? Fake date each other? How could that possibly work?"
Steve lifted his hands to defend himself, nervous to face Nancy in a fight. "Okay, okay. I know! It's a bit insane." He sighed. "But think of it like this. Jonathan sees you dating the most popular guy in school.."
"So humble," Nancy mumbled.
Steve gave her a look of annoyance before continuing. "Anyway. Most popular guy in school." He points to himself just to piss her off. "And he flips his shit. Wonders why he couldn't possibly get a hold of you. You automatically become more desirable the minute you're in a relationship, and Jonathan will realize it the second he sees us holding hands."
Nancy tilted her head in confusion. "Why would being in a relationship make me more desirable?"
"Think of it like this," Steve said. "No desperation. The crush on Jonathan is oozing out of you, Wheeler." Her cheeks flushed which made Steve smile a bit. "The minute he realizes you've stopped pining over him, the more he'll wonder why. And it's because..." Steve pointed his fingers at Nancy.
"I'll be in a relationship." Nancy nodded, playing along with his silly game.
"Exactly!" Steve beamed.
"Wouldn't this be making you more desirable as well?" Nancy asked.
Steve nodded, his smile growing wider. "Yes, you're getting it! See, you'll be helping me out too. Chrissy Cunningham is the love of my life and I need her, Wheeler. Badly."
Nancy cringed at the desperation but found it kind of sweet how enamored he was with Chrissy. "Chrissy Cunningham? She doesn't like you?"
"I can't tell. Eddie always likes to say she likes him and I just...can't have that happen."
"How selfless of you." Nancy retorted. All the girl wanted to do was laugh at the fact that he was so desperate for a girl who has never expressed desire toward Steve.
"Can it." Steve rolled his eyes. "Anyways. People want what they can't have. So, when Chrissy sees I'm 'dating' you, she'll want me even more. It'll be perfect for us."
"This just seems so...wrong. I feel like I'm going to be manipulating everyone!" Nancy sighed, growing anxious over the plan.
"No, no." Steve shook his head. "You won't be doing anything except allowing me to hold your hand in public. It'll all be me. Jonathan will come to you naturally, I promise. Besides, there's another perk?"
Nancy hesitated for a moment. "Another one? What, do you need to impress the whole cheerleading team?"
"Funny," Steve muttered. "No. I need..a tutor. Real bad."
"A tutor?" Nancy practically sprung out of her seat.
"Yes, Ms. Kelley recommended you. I need your help because if I don't get my grades up, then I can't apply to schools or be accepted by schools due to my poor GPA. I'll also get kicked off the team, which won't be great for the spring season."
Nancy tried her best to contain a smile. "That's crazy because I need another activity to put on my college resume!"
Steve lifted an eyebrow. "You don't say."
Nancy nodded, a smile forming. "This is perfect! If I tutor you, I can add it to my resume and Emerson will totally accept me now!" Nancy stood up and began to pace back and forth. Steve's eyes grew wide as he watched the girl, nervous for her to fall from the concentration. "On top of that, I will be helping a student grow into a beautiful new person."
Steve smiled. "Wow, you really care."
"It'll be great for my essay!" Nancy lifted her hands to create a fake scene. "Nancy Wheeler loves to educate, as well as express leadership. She's perfect for Emerson, and make her the Editor-In-Chief!"
"Okay, tiger, slow your role." Steve humbled her by forcing Nancy to sit back down. "You just have to help me. I am really depending on you."
Nancy sat for a moment, a soft pout on her lips. She stared up at Steve, anxious to give him an answer. The whole idea seemed ludicrous. How was Jonathan just suddenly going to want to date her the minute Steve took her under his wing? Wouldn't that be a major turn-off? Granted, she barely knew anything about boys, but learning from Steve Harrington seemed like the worst idea on the planet.
On the bright side, Nancy found this to be perfect for her application. Sure, she loved to tutor. It was great to see people excel in topics they struggled with. Nancy always felt like a momma bird watching her kids leave the nest for the first time after sessions. But how was she going to handle tutoring Steve? She knew it would be extra work considering his grades must be all over the place. And worst of all, she hated him. At least she thought she did.
Tugging at her hair nervously, Nancy let out a groan. "Fine."
Steve stared at her. "Fine?"
Nancy closed her eyes for a moment. She sent a prayer, hoping she wouldn't regret this decision. "Fine. I'll do it."
Steve's heart practically fell into his butt. He immediately wrapped his arms around Nancy, pulling her into the tightest bear hug imaginable. Nancy winced, refusing to hug him back due to the awkward way he grabbed her. The boy pushed himself away, placing his hands on Nancy's frail arms. "Tomorrow. Meet me in the parking lot in my car. Alright?"
Nancy stared up at Steve. She could see the glimmer in his eyes, making her heart flip-flop weirdly. He seemed overly excited about this, and it made Nancy feel nauseous. "Alright."
Lifting himself off the bed, Steve headed toward the window. "You're the best, Nancy Wheeler!"
"That's it?" Nancy faced him.
Steve turned around, placing his hand on the window to open it. "Yeah."
"No plan? Layouts? How we're going to convince Chrissy? Or, better yet...your tutoring schedule."
"That's a tomorrow issue." Steve smiled. "Remember. Parking lot right before school."
Nancy nodded, smiling softly at Steve. "Right."
After he threw himself out of the window, Steve looked back at Nancy. He placed his shoes back on his feet, adjusting to the uncomfortableness that had no match for Nancy's soft carpeting. "Goodnight, fake girlfriend."
Nancy stood up and walked toward the window. She placed her hands on top, a fake smile forming on her lips. "Get lost, fake boyfriend." She felt ill just saying that.
With a wink, Steve disappeared into the night. Nancy let her hands rest on the window for a moment as she listened to the sounds of Steve's feet hitting the ground and the pedals of a bike. She watched as Steve pedaled down the street, her eyes feeling glossy.

starting to wonder whether i was neglected between the ages of 12-18 and had to parent myself through it. never thought it was possible since there was always somebody in the house, but none of those people took an active parent role in my life so...what did that leave? mom was gone for the majority of that time, dad was also gone. aunt was there but her day to day responsibilities towards me and my sister were making sure we got our dinner after school. we were left entirely to our own devices after that. i can't remember a single time anybody ever helped me with homework or schoolwork, sure i was always an independent creature when it came to that stuff and maybe if offered, i would have turned it down, but nobody was even checking or keeping track of a single thing i was doing. the only time i remember mom & dad joint parenting was when i got suspended for that card thing when i was 9/10, and then they were gone again. maybe in the same way that her projects are her distractions now, she sought other countries and programs and studies as a means of escape from here, which is not really impossible to imagine given everything that was happening in our home and the kinds of toxicity people unleashed on each other. but why didn't they take us with? why didn't me and my sister get the luxury of also moving to france, to los angeles, while she studied and worked and found herself? it hardly seems fair in retrospect, not for the nice luxury life that would have afforded but for the escape from the crazy abusive person it would have afforded. maybe i wouldn't have taken on so much damage if they had done that. maybe i wouldn't have sunk into the depths of anorexia and all the other darkness. maybe, maybe. it's all speculation and What If's but i'm realizing a lot of major things in this moment.
it feels crazy to say i was neglected because i felt the opposite of that, but maybe i'm only thinking of material issues where i was clothed and fed and in that sense, i never had to worry. but anything above that, emotional and developmental issues, i guess, i was on my own. i figured it all out on my own. i always used to be surprised myself at my independent streak, going off to live alone at 15 in a different country for a summer and not suffering in the slightest for it, not missing home or family. quite the opposite, i felt like i was thriving. maybe that's because i've always been parenting and looking after myself since i could remember, or at least since the age of 7/8 when we left moscow and that close, real family unit i had felt so solidly for a couple of years instantly dissolved. when we were in moscow we were a family unit, the four of us, and even that is crystallized in my mind as the Best Part. whenever anyone else got added into the mix, shit started going sideways. i do believe my parents would've grown apart regardless of all the outside insanity and forces pushing on them, but maybe they would've lasted longer together. maybe even up to my graduation. we could never be a solid unit in that home where She resided, and it's crazy i'm realizing this now and none of the adults could back then. They should've seen the problem clear as day and then moved us out. i would have rather lived in a smaller apartment and do with less than have to share with her (and grandma, love you grandma but you too were perpetuating that bs).
youtube
it's taken this video to make me realize all of this, but wow, way too many of these apply to me and even that too is somehow me bearing witness to myself that i did, indeed, experience childhood trauma. even now i'm so reticent to call it that because some Part inside of me is like "you ungateful shit, what about X and Y, and Z". as if abusive dynamics can't exist in families that are well off, in children that are spoiled, that have their every whim fulfilled and then some. as if abuse can't happen to any person in any home regardless of these circumstances and you have to have lived some kind of Tiny Tim upbringing in a house like the Cratchits to have Really Been Neglected.
none of my friends grew up like this, we all had some level of privilege or wealth that afforded us, in the first place, the education it did, and everything else after. But every other person who was in my friend circle did fine, and did not suffer the way I did because their family was not toxic and twisted at its core. maybe A*****'s, but her toxic mother was out of the picture long before she moved here and her dad had seemingly taken on two of his stepchildren with a kind of love and care that would otherwise not be seen in someone not biologically related to their kids. though irony of ironies, that applied to me too. Ana's parents up and left for italy and she too, i'm sure, felt a hole inside and a great neglect because I remember her tears, missing her mother, the diary entries, all of that. In a way we were similar in that regard, except I don't ever remember crying because I missed my mother. Pretty sure i was already shut down and emotionless by then and feeling nothing about it all. it was just the way things were, and i did not mind. maybe everyone just dealt with their shit and stiff upper lipped it, and i'm the big baby who couldn't handle it all. it's either that or what happened to me was Much Worse than what happened to my friends or even to my sister, it can't be any other thing. and i can't work out which it was, as if it even makes a difference, because the damage was done and my body went into dissociation mode and my mind left its home and neither quite fully returned for a good 12 years. i'm still working to put myself back in my body and mind fully, even now. which is crazy. maybe by 40 i'll have gotten there. i hope so. i need to learn to be present once and for all and to do it before i die. it's not my fault in fight or flight mode i took permanent flight, bu it sure is my responsibility and even duty now to restore myself back in order. i'm tired of feeling incapable of doing things and want to feel capable of everything instead.

But let’s face it: finding the right deck builders near Victoria can be a bit overwhelming. With so many contractors claiming to be the best, how do you really know who’s up for the job?
This comprehensive guide is here to help you navigate the process confidently so you can find reliable professionals who’ll build your dream deck—one that’s stylish, sturdy, and ready to withstand Vancouver Island’s unique coastal climate.
Start With Your Vision
Before you start searching for deck contractors near Victoria, take a moment to get clear on your goals. Are you looking to build a brand-new deck from scratch, or are you considering deck refinishing to revive an older structure? Do you prefer the natural look of cedar or the low-maintenance appeal of composite decking?
Jot down the must-haves—like built-in seating, lighting, or privacy features—and set a realistic budget. This will help you communicate clearly with your contractor and keep surprises to a minimum.
Do Your Local Homework
Victoria isn’t just any city—it’s a place where salty air, rainfall, and lush landscapes play a significant role in how materials age. That’s why choosing a local experience matters. A contractor based in Ontario or Alberta won’t know the ins and outs of building for our coastal climate like someone who works right here in town.
Look for companies with a solid reputation in Greater Victoria. One trusted name that often pops up in homeowner referrals? Bald Eagle Landscaping. They’ve earned a strong local following thanks to their commitment to quality and their deep understanding of how to build outdoor spaces that last.
Ask the Right Questions
Not all deck builders are created equal. Once you’ve shortlisted a few names, don’t be shy—interview them like you would any professional. Key questions to ask include:
Are you licensed and insured?
How many years have you been working in deck construction?
Can you show me photos of completed decks?
Do you offer warranties on your work?
Top-tier companies like Bald Eagle Landscaping will happily walk you through their past projects, explain their process, and give you peace of mind before any work begins.
Check Their Full Range of Services
Here’s a pro tip: hiring a company that offers more than just deck building often works to your advantage. Why? Because they understand how your new deck fits into your entire outdoor space.
Take Bald Eagle Landscaping for example. Besides being top-notch deck contractors near Victoria, they also offer:
Landscape Design
Landscape Construction
Irrigation Systems
Retaining Walls
Fence Construction
Outdoor Lighting
If you dream of a complete backyard makeover—think lush gardens, ambient lighting, or a privacy fence—working with one team keeps everything cohesive and on schedule.
For more details, visit their official website to explore the full scope of services.
Get a Quote—But Don’t Be Fooled by Price Alone
We get it—everyone wants a great deal. But when it comes to deck construction, going with the cheapest quote can often cost you more in the long run. Cheap materials, rushed jobs, and vague timelines are red flags.
When you request quotes, make sure they include everything—materials, permits, timelines, and potential extras. A professional like Bald Eagle Landscaping will provide a clear, detailed estimate so there are no surprises along the way.
Read Reviews and Ask for References
Online reviews are a goldmine of information. Look for comments on workmanship, timeliness, cleanliness, and overall satisfaction. Bonus points if the company replies professionally to both praise and criticism.
It’s also perfectly fair to ask for two or three references from recent clients. Past customers of Bald Eagle Landscaping often praise their friendly crew, transparent communication, and high-quality craftsmanship.
Know What to Expect During the Build
Your chosen contractor should walk you through the process: from design and material selection to timelines, permits, and cleanup. Ask how they handle Victoria’s unpredictable weather—will they pause work during heavy rain or snow? What happens if there are delays?
Schedule your free consultation today with Bald Eagle Landscaping to get a customized project timeline that works for you and your property.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. How long does it take to build a deck in Victoria?
A: Most decks take 1–3 weeks to complete, depending on size, design, and weather conditions. The crew at Bald Eagle Landscaping will give you a clear timeline upfront.
Q2. What type of deck materials are best for Victoria’s climate?
A: Cedar is popular for its natural resistance to moisture and insects, while composite decking offers low maintenance and longevity. Your contractor can help you choose based on your budget and style.
Q3. Can I refinish an existing deck instead of building a new one?
A: Absolutely. If the structure is sound, deck refinishing near Victoria can breathe new life into a tired space. Services may include sanding, staining, and replacing worn boards.
Why Local Matters
Choosing a deck builder who knows Victoria’s weather patterns, bylaws, and terrain isn’t just convenient—it’s essential. From permit requirements in different municipalities to soil drainage in coastal zones, local expertise can make or break your project.

The Rising Popularity of Metal Roofs in Florida
In recent years, the popularity of metal roofs in Florida has surged among homeowners and builders alike. As weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, the demand for durable, long-lasting roofing options is at an all-time high. This article delves into the benefits of metal roofing and what to consider when choosing a roofing company in Fort Lauderdale.
The Advantages of Metal Roofs
Metal roofs offer numerous advantages over traditional roofing materials. One of the key benefits is their exceptional durability. Designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, metal roofs can handle heavy rains, strong winds, and even hail without sustaining significant damage. For homeowners in Florida, where storms are common, this resilience is invaluable.
Another significant advantage of metal roofs is their energy efficiency. Unlike traditional shingles, metal reflects sunlight, which helps to keep homes cooler in the sweltering Florida heat. This reflective property can lead to reduced energy bills, making metal roofs an appealing choice for eco-conscious homeowners.
Additionally, metal roofs are known for their longevity. With proper maintenance, a metal roof can last 40 to 70 years, far exceeding the lifespan of traditional roofing materials. This longevity not only provides peace of mind but also adds value to your home.
Choosing the Right Roofing Company
Selecting the right roofing company in Fort Lauderdale is crucial for the success of your roofing project. With so many options available, it’s essential to do your homework. Look for companies with a solid reputation and extensive experience in installing metal roofs. Customer reviews and testimonials can provide insight into the quality of service you can expect.
It’s also important to verify that the company is licensed and insured. This ensures that you are protected in case of any accidents or damages during the installation process. A reputable roofing company will also offer warranties on their work, giving you added security and confidence in your investment.
Moreover, consider the company’s expertise in metal roofing specifically. Not all roofing contractors have the same level of experience with metal roofs, so it’s important to ask about their previous projects. A company that specializes in metal roofing will be better equipped to handle the unique challenges that come with this material.
The Aesthetic Appeal of Metal Roofs
Beyond their durability and energy efficiency, metal roofs in Florida also offer a unique aesthetic appeal. They come in a variety of colors and styles, allowing homeowners to choose a design that complements their home’s architecture. From sleek modern designs to traditional looks, metal roofing can enhance the curb appeal of any property.
Additionally, metal roofs can mimic the appearance of other materials, such as shingles or tiles, while providing the benefits of metal. This versatility allows homeowners to achieve their desired look without sacrificing performance.
Maintenance Considerations
While metal roofs are known for their durability, they still require some maintenance to ensure they remain in top condition. Regular inspections are recommended to identify any potential issues early on. Homeowners should check for loose seams, rust spots, or any debris accumulation that could impact the roof’s performance.
A reliable roofing company in Fort Lauderdale can provide maintenance services to help keep your metal roof in optimal shape. Regular cleaning and inspections can extend the life of your roof and prevent costly repairs down the line.
Impact on Home Value
Investing in a metal roof can significantly increase your home’s value. Real estate agents often note that homes with metal roofs sell faster and at higher prices compared to those with traditional roofing materials. This is partly due to the longevity and low maintenance requirements of metal roofs, which are appealing to potential buyers.
Furthermore, the energy efficiency of metal roofs can be a strong selling point. As more buyers become environmentally conscious, the benefits of lower energy bills and reduced ecological impact can make your home more attractive on the market.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the rising popularity of metal roofs in Florida is a testament to their numerous benefits, including durability, energy efficiency, and aesthetic appeal. When considering a new roof, it’s essential to choose a reputable roofing company in Fort Lauderdale that specializes in metal roofing. By doing so, you can ensure that your investment is handled with care and expertise.
With the right materials and professional installation, a metal roof can provide lasting protection, enhance your home’s value, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Whether you are building a new home or looking to replace an old roof, metal roofing is a fantastic option to consider.

What Are the Disadvantages of Renovation?
Renovating a home sounds exciting—who wouldn’t want a fresh, upgraded space that perfectly suits their style and needs? But before you start picking out new countertops or knocking down walls, it’s worth knowing the downsides. Renovation isn’t just about improving your home; it comes with stress, unexpected costs, and plenty of headaches.
If you’re a homeowner in Lake County, IL, considering remodeling, working with a trusted contractor like Waldron Construction can make a huge difference. But even with the best team, renovations have their fair share of drawbacks. Let’s talk about what you’re in for.
1. The Budget Always Gets Blown
You set a budget. You feel good about it. Then suddenly, that “affordable” kitchen remodel is costing double.
Hidden issues: Older homes can reveal nasty surprises—outdated wiring, structural damage, or plumbing nightmares. Fixing them isn’t optional.
Material price fluctuations: Due to supply chain issues, lumber, tile, and even paint prices can spike.
Change orders: You might fall in love with a fancier backsplash or decide you want heated floors.
A solid contractor can help you plan for contingencies, but always expect to spend 20–30% more than you initially planned. That dream remodel? It comes at a premium.
2. The Timeline is a Moving Target
Do you know how home renovation shows make it look like a kitchen can be transformed on a weekend? That’s TV magic. In reality, timelines stretch—sometimes by months.
Permits take time: In Lake County, permits for major renovations aren’t instant. If you’re making structural changes, get ready for a waiting game.
Weather delays: Midwest winters can slow down exterior renovations. Too much rain? No roofing today.
Contractor availability: Skilled workers are in high demand. If you’re hiring the best (and you should be), there might be a wait before they can start.
And if materials get delayed? Well, get comfortable with your half-done kitchen.
3. Living in a Construction Zone is... Rough
Preparing for a mess if you’re staying in your home during a renovation. Dust gets everywhere, even if your contractor seals off rooms. The noise? Nonstop. And forget about having a fully functioning bathroom or kitchen for a while.
Limited access: Cooking? Maybe on a hot plate in the garage. Showering? Hope your gym membership is active.
Safety concerns: If you have kids or pets, keeping them away from exposed wiring, nails, and tools is a full-time job.
The mental toll: Living in chaos for months is exhausting. You’ll start dreaming of clean countertops and quiet mornings.
If you’re tackling a major renovation, it might be worth renting a short-term place to escape the dust and disruption.
4. Renovation Regret is Real
You spent months planning, thousands of dollars, and now that the dust has settled… something feels off.
Trendy choices don’t always age well: That all-white kitchen? Gorgeous in photos, but impossible to keep clean. Open shelving? Now you have to style every plate and cup.
Resale value may not increase as expected: Not every renovation boosts home value. Converting a bedroom into a giant closet might suit you, but buyers want more bedrooms, not fewer.
Functionality vs. aesthetics: That sleek freestanding tub looks amazing, but if you never take baths, it’s wasted space.
Avoid regret by working with a contractor who understands both design and practicality—one like Waldron Construction that knows what works in Lake County homes.
5. You’ll Have to Deal with Contractors
A great contractor makes your renovation easier. A bad one? Nightmare.
Unreliable workers: Some show up late, disappear mid-project, or cut corners.
Unclear contracts: If pricing and timelines aren’t detailed upfront, expect misunderstandings—and extra charges.
Lack of communication: Ever tried getting an update from a contractor who’s juggling ten projects?
Do your homework before hiring. Look for licensed, insured professionals with solid local reviews. Ask for references. And never pay for everything upfront.
(Want a recommendation? Waldron Construction has built a reputation for quality work and clear communication.)
6. Neighbor Drama Can Happen
If your renovation involves construction noise, dumpsters, or street parking, your neighbors might not be thrilled.
Early morning hammering? Annoying.
Debris piling up? An eyesore.
Parking taken up by work trucks? Frustrating.
It helps to give your neighbors a heads-up before work starts—especially if you’re in a close-knit community. A little goodwill goes a long way.
7. Renovation Fatigue is Real
At first, you’re excited—picking finishes, seeing progress. But six months in? You’re tired of decisions, tired of waiting, and just want your home back.
Decision overload: Cabinets, flooring, hardware, lighting—so many choices.
Constant problem-solving: Something always goes wrong, and it’s always on you to approve the fix.
It never feels “done”: Even after the big stuff is finished, there’s always one more thing—final touch-ups, lingering paint fumes, or missing trim pieces.
By the time it’s over, you might swear off renovations forever—at least until you see another gorgeous remodel on Pinterest.
Conclusion
Absolutely—if you’re prepared. The right renovation adds value, function, and beauty to your home. But knowing the downsides helps you go in with realistic expectations.
Have a buffer in your budget—because surprises will happen.
Choose a contractor wisely—don’t just go with the cheapest bid.
Brace yourself for dust, delays, and stress—but also for the excitement of seeing your home transform.
If you’re planning a home renovation in Lake County, Illinois, working with Waldron Construction ensures you get expert guidance, high-quality work, and fewer headaches along the way.
Your home is worth it—just don’t expect the process to be all sunshine and fresh paint.
