Dragon speculative biology

I like “realistic” depictions of dragons but a lot go too far from the typical design for my taste, so all of these are just scientific enough that I can suspend my disbelief while keeping the fantasy imagery

Notes/references below the cut:

1: Lungs: Birdlike lungs allow for breathing at high altitudes and breathing fire (dragons struggle to breathe fire at higher altitudes). Most of the body cavity being full of air reduces weight

2. Fire organ: Produces a chemical that ignites on contact with air. The chemical also aids with digestion

3. Jacobson’s organ

4. Crests: Used along with wings for stabilization and steering, but can be retracted for streamlining. Both are sensitive to air pressure and movement

5. Uncinate processes on ribs

6. Bats don’t have a very large keel due to the fact that some of their flight muscle is in the wings themselves [x]

A lot of realistic dragon designs I’ve seen limit themselves to birds and reptiles, but it’s a fantasy creature, you can pick and choose from any animal. In universe they are a canonically magical species, so I do hand wave some stuff as magic
